Dear Delany community, A missed school day is a lost opportunity for students to learn. Research is unequivocal on this matter stating regular absences and/or large periods of absences for explained or unexplained leave has a detrimental impact on learning development. Consequently, I implore all parents to carefully consider all circumstances when deciding if your son/daughter is absent from school. In cases of severe medical conditions, one has no choice but if the condition is mild and the child is managing the symptoms I would ask you to lean towards sending your son/daughter to school. In particular, I would also ask parents to, when possible to organise overseas trips during school holidays. We have had students take excessively long periods of time away during school impacting on their submission of class work and significant assessments. If you are unsure of any of the points I have raised please contact your child’s Stage Leader for more details. MULTICULTURAL DAY The Delany Multicultural Day was held in the second last week of last term. This event was a celebration of the rich and diverse cultures that comprise our community. Students participated in the cultures of learning, sport, fashion, food and entertainment. We were lucky to have four people speak to students about their various experiences and reflections of their cultural and ethnic backgrounds: Br Charles; a parent, Mr Richard Zadar; and two young adults, Maria and Cosi Tembo (sisters of Thorie). The day would not have been successful without the contribution of many parents.

Continued from page 1 They had cooked, or were cooking on the afternoon, a huge variety of food for visitors, staff and students to purchase and “get a taste” of the flavours of other cultures. Without the generosity of these parents the day would not have been as successful (or tasty). Finally, there would have been no celebration without the enthusiastic organisation and support of our Delany students. Special mention must go to Year 12 student Rachel Tuala who was the quiet but determined driving force behind this day. It was also a joy to watch the many students who performed during the afternoon - most times in their cultural dress and performing traditional dances from their countries of origin.

THE PATRICIAN COMMUNITY DELANY DAY On the final Wednesday of last term we welcomed almost 50 year 10 students from our Patrician school network. This is an annual event that brings together the future leaders of our schools for an opportunity to meet each other, reflect on their Patrician journey so far, and to plan for the final two years at school. The day was a great success led by our Religious Education Coordinator Mrs Karina Stow. Mr Muscat and I will be attending an overnight retreat next week with the Patrician Brothers which will provide us with the opportunity to also deepen our understanding of the gentle and generous spirit of Daniel Delany.

THE ACADEMIC COMMUNITY The twin pillars of spiritual formation and academic achievement are at the core of all Catholic schools. The conclusion of last term provided the opportunity for parents of students in years 7 to 11 to meet and talk with our teaching staff. Many who attended learned about the work, achievements and effort of their child and also the changing way in which schooling is conducted in 2016. There are a number of school reports that have not been collected by families. I strongly encourage you to contact your child’s Stage Leader and arrange meetings with teaching staff if needed, or at least the delivery of school reports. These reports will not be handed out to students until contact has been made by a parent of carer.

Finally our prayers and thoughts are with the Year 12 HSC class as they approach their Trial HSC examinations. This period, and then of course the HSC in term 4, are the points of greatest stress (for many). It is sometimes argued that these exams apply unnecessary pressure on students and that the results measure only a snapshot of a student’s learning throughout two years of senior school. Remember, however, that post-school options of all sorts - professions, trade, university - are always available at some point in a person’s career. A common expectation of students who leave school in 2016 is that they are likely to have 10 different careers (and many more different jobs) throughout their working life. With this perspective in mind the HSC is an important step...but one of many. Good luck to and God Bless all of our Year 12 students. St Patrick, pray for us. Mr Anthony Blomfield Assistant Principal

CURRICULUM Over the last few weeks Yr8 to 10 have started to make some choices about the subjects they will study next year. The most important thing to consider when making these choices is to pick the subjects that you like. Too many students pick subjects based on what their friends pick or who is teaching the subject. I can understand the reasoning behind this but things change, friends change schools and teachers sometimes will not necessarily be teaching the same subjects. You will always do better at something that you enjoy then

something that you don’t. If you need some more information

during this time please contact the College.

Mr Mark Robinson Director of Teaching and Learning

ATHLETICS CARNIVAL The annual athletics carnival was held at Holroyd Sportsground. Although it rained at the start of the day, the carnival was very successful with students competing in a number of competitive track and field events, as well as novelty events to help their house win on the day.

Congratulations to the winning house, Chisholm!

I would like to commend the Year 7 girls for the grit, determination and enthusiasm that they showed when doing their Rock and Water activities, particularly when it came to their punching pad and glove combinations. Another activity that they liked was the intuition exercise in which they had to guess or intuit where two of their fellow students were whilst they had their eyes closed. Mr Warren Johnson

VINNIES VAN I would like to thank Ms Rannia Katrib , and students of Year 12 & 11 (Tawanda, Krystal, Jayden, Carissa, Divashna and Fouad) for working the Vinnies Van last night . Year 9 and 10 students had donated food and toiletry items as part of their project, Faith in Action. We have distributed them to the homeless people last night. A big thank you to the teachers and students for their generosity.

DOOR KNOCK APPEAL The appeal is on Saturday 20th August. Your support is much appreciated on that day. May God bless you all. Mr Thomas

MULTICULTURAL DAY On 22nd Wednesday June, the Hospitality Portfolio held a Multicultural day that ran from lunch to 5pm. It was a huge success and the day involved guest speakers including our very own school captain's sisters, Maria and Cosi Tembo, Chloe's dad and our own most respected Brother Charles. Thank you to all who contributed food items and time out of their busy lives to help run the day smoothly. The amount raised was $1,200. This is all thanks to the help, support and contribution of foods from parents, teachers and students. The day was a huge success, thank you once again. Hospitality portfolio

SCHOOL OPAL CARD REMINDER One of the more significant changes created by the recent introduction of the School Opal card is the need for students to tap on and off when they travel to and from school. Opal data gathered by tapping on and off is used to determine demand for bus services. If students don’t tap on and tap off, services may be cancelled due the lack of recorded patronage. Please remember to tap on at the beginning and off at the end of each trip. This is one of the conditions of using a School Opal card.

SYDNEY PACIFICA On Friday 22nd July a group of our students combined with boys from Patrician Brothers Fairfield to perform in Sydney Pacifica 2016 at the Liverpool Whitlam Centre. Pacifica is Australia’s largest high school cultural festival for Pacific, NZ Maori and Aboriginal Indigenous students. It aims to reconnect the students to their cultural heritage and learn the importance of traditions, customs and values that have evolved through time and generations to create their identity and who they are today.

Endless hours of hard work and practice culminated in an amazing 15 minute performance combining song and dance to showcase Indigenous and Islander culture. Thanks to the efforts of our supportive parents the team looked amazing and the students did themselves, their families and the college proud with a performance that wowed the crowd.

The Monsignor McGovern Art Prize, for students in years 5 and 6 attending our local primary catholic schools, was established by Delany College in 2002. The award is named after the Holy Trinity Parish Priest Monsignor Joseph McGovern who first invited the Patrician Brothers to come to Granville and open primary and secondary schools. This years' award ceremony and exhibition was held on Tuesday 26th July in one of Delany Colleges' new learning spaces. Noted Australian Pop artist Mr Johnny Romeo, our Delany College artist in residence found it quite difficult to determine the winners as he said "the students have created technically and conceptually sophisticated self portraits in various media". After a welcome from our Principal Mr Robert Muscat, certificates for highly commended entries and first place prizes were awarded. Students were extremely excited to have their photographs taken and openly discuss their concepts with the enthusiastic audience of students, parents, teachers and special visitors. Entries were received from St Oliver's, Harris Park, Holy Trinity, Granville and St Margaret Mary’s, Merrylands. The winning entries were: Vatsal Sharma Yr 6 Winner "Reality" St Margaret Mary’s Anger Akot Yr 5 Winner "Snap Shot" Holy Trinity

YEAR 11 VISUAL ARTS INSTALLATION On Thursday 23rd June a small group of 8 Year 11 Visual Arts students attended Holroyd Gardens to construct Installation works made using frozen orbs made from freezing balloons. The intention was to construct works and photograph them using techniques made famous by British artist Andy Goldsworthy. The planning and organisation for the project took some time as we needed to freeze our balloons full of water and ensure they didn't lose shape during the process. Of course, we also needed frozen balloons to make the installation effective. We spent about a week perfecting our technique. It was decided that in order to keep the balloons in shape each one would have to be frozen in a small bowl to make sure the base did not flatten out. Then we needed to make sure the centre of each orb was completely frozen solid. In all we had about 100 frozen orbs which were frozen in the hospitality, canteen and home freezers. Here are some of our works. At some stage soon we will get a photo book printed to exhibit our work in the same fashion as other Land/Earth and Installation artists do.
