Holy Father’s Prayer Intention

For November, 2014

Universal: That all who suffer

loneliness may experience the closeness

of God and the support of others.

For Evangelization: That young

seminarians and religious may have

wise and well-formed mentors.

The Dedication of the Lateran Basilica

November 8 & 9, 2014

Ezekial 47:1-2.8-9, 12 Water flows through

the temple.

Psalm 46 “The waters of the river

gladden the city of God,

the Holy dwelling of the

Most High!:

1 Corinthians 3:9c-11 We are God’s building.

16-17

John 2:13-22 Jesus will raise the temple

in three days.

Up until Jesus’ time, worship of God was associated with a place, the

temple in Jerusalem. In today’s Gospel, Jesus identifies Himself as the

temple, thus shifting the focus of our worship from a place to a person. It

is well to remember this in a time of shifting demographics and

reconfiguring parishes. As precious as our church buildings are to us, the

Church is more than bricks and mortar.

33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time

November 15 & 16, 2014

Intercession for Life

For all people throughout the world:

That they might recognize and treat each person

As a masterpiece of God’s creation;

We pray to the Lord:

Today’s feast celebrates the “home” church of the Pope (the

Lateran Basilica, NOT St. Peter’s) and yet our Gospel has Jesus

talking about destroying temples. What gives??

First, the Basilica. One criticism of the Catholic Church can also

be considered its greatest strength: it is an institution. It is (by

far) the largest organization in the world and, at 2000 years, is also

one of the oldest. We honor church buildings not because of the

architecture (fine though they may be). We honor them because

they are a concrete, tangible link to our past, to our faith, to

brothers and sisters from literally thousands of years ago. It is like

the rosary that belonged to my grandmother that I now pray with.

But, the building is NOT our faith. We need church buildings so

we may gather, offer praise and worship of our God and to

prepare ourselves to go out and serve one another. But, Jesus

reminds us that the Church is not a building at all. It is you and I,

the People of God. Destroy us? OK. But, through Jesus, we too

will rise again

The Solemnity of Christ the King is “the final Sunday of the

Liturgical Year.” It is a feast day that focuses on the authority of

Christ. While the problem our world faces today differ from the

particular events that inspired Pope Pius XI to establish this feast in

the 1920’s. His message and call to honor Christ the King in a

society that denies the authority of Our Lord is no less pertinent now

than it was then.
