The bringing of a professional guest director to the St. Edward' s University Theatre is a very important and necessary expansion of the guest artist aspect of our program. It is our belief guest directors can provide our students with special links to the professional theatre that cannot be provided by the use of other guests. By their work with noted guest directors, our students will not only be increasing their knowledge of their art/craft; but also, their chances for successful employment in the theatre. We further believe, guest directors can better aid theatre faculty in teaching and stressing the importance of theatre process over theatre product. A successful production, though important, is of little lasting or long term benefit to the student who does not understand how that success was achieved. The expansion of the guest artist program in this manner coupled with the continuation of bringing talented and dedicated guest actors and actresses into production, offers our students a unique opportunity and experience found in very few undergraduate theatre programs. To provide students with positive role models is a fundamental tool of teaching . Working with Mr. Richard Ramos has been both a great pleasure and privilege for the University Theatre students and faculty. We hope you will share in the excitement of this new aspect of our program by your continued patronage and support.

PHONOTHON RINGS UP SUCCESS Over 5,000 telephone numbers were dialed during the St. Edward's

fifth annual Phonothon Oct. 17-19, ringing up pledges of over $120,000 to the university.

During the Phonothon, each graduate of the university is contacted by a volunteer by phone to pledge a gift to St. Edward's this year. Over 150 volunteers, including alumni, students and St. Edward's staff and friends, manned the telephone lines.

John Lucas, director of the annual fund, said, "The Phonothon not only provides the university with funds, but serves as a bond between our alums. It's possible that we all receive a great deal of satisfaction knowing that each contribution has indeed made a difference in the quality of education offered at St . Edward's."

The annual fund drive supports the operating budget of the university. This includes student scholarships, athletic equipment and scholarships, library acquisitions, campus beautification and new program development. These Phonothon gifts will help make up for the difference be- · tween the cost to each student in tuition and the actual cost to St . Edward's of providing quality, independent education.

Volunteer chairman for the event was Dick Stone, '67. Other alumni volunteers on the Phonothon Steering Committee included Fred McNair, '67, M . Emmett "Shag" O'Shaughnessy, '28, Fred Scott, '79. Doris Constantine, '81, Priscilla Hubenak, '74, Pete Holland, '73, Lisa Delaney, '82, and Shaun O'Brien, '59. Student chairmen were John Cernohaus, Tony Cutaia and Eva Muno z.

THE AUTHOR

All of William Inge's first four successful plays are set in the mid, west area, and that is his place of origin. He was the youngest of five children of a traveling salesman whose home was in Independence, Kansas. Inge took a B.A. degree in speech and drama at the University of Kansas. His first job was as a teacher of English in a high, school at Columbus, Kansas. His urge for drama drove him to become a newscaster on station KFH, at Witchita, Kansas. Then from 1938 to 1943 he taught at Stephens College, Columbia, MO.

In 194 3 his first big break came. He became a waHime replacement for a dramatic and music critic on the St. Louis Star,Times, which brought him closer to big, time Theatre than he had ever been before . And meanwhile he was drafting plays.

He showed one of these to Tennessee Williams it was an early draft of "Come Back, Little Sheba". Williams gave him a strong encouragementparticularly valued by Inge since he had revived his interest in writing plays as a result of being enormously moved by a performance of Williams' "The Glass Menagerie".

Stimulated by Williams' encouragement, Inge completed his first play, "Farther Off from Heaven". "The Dark at The Top Of The Stairs" is an altered version of this play.

From 1950 to 1957 Inge's playwrighting career triumphed with "Come Back Little Sheba", "Picnic", "Bus Stop", and "The Dark At The Top Of The Stairs".
