Why do we not exercisegreater faith in theDivine Physician?

As He worked for the man withthe palsy, so He will work todayfor those who come to Him forhealing. We have great need ofmore faith. I am alarmed as I seethe lack of faith among our people. We need to come right into the

presence of Christ, believing thatHe will heal our physical andspiritual inrmities.

We are too faithless. Oh, how Iwish that I could lead our peopleto have faith in God! They neednot feel that in order to exercisefaith they must be wrought up intoa high state of excitement. All theyhave to do is to believe Gods Word,

just as they believe one anothersword. He hath said it, and He will

perform His Word. Calmly rely onHis promise, because He means allthat He says. Say, He has spokento me in His Word, and He willfulll every promise that He hasmade. Do not become restless. Betrustful. Gods Word is true. Actas if your heavenly Father couldbe trusted. . . . 1SM 83.

Remember the story of theparalytic? Mark 2:2-5: Andstraightway many were gatheredtogether, insomuch that there was

no room to receive them, no, notso much as about the door: and hepreached the word unto them. Andthey come unto him, bringing onesick of the palsy, which was borneof four. And when they could notcome nigh unto him for the press, they uncovered the roof where hewas: and when they had broken itup, they let down the bed whereinthe sick of the palsy lay. When

Jesus saw their faith, he said untothe sick of the palsy, Son, thy sinsbe forgiven thee.

We are told that it is ourprivilege to exercise faith

in Gods promises. It is theprivilege of every soul to exercisefaith in our Lord Jesus Christ.Reecting Christ, 130. A privilegeis something that we are entitled

to. Websters denes privilege as aspecial advantage or immunity or benet not enjoyed by all, and/ora right reserved exclusively by aparticular person or group.

As children of the heavenlyKing, we have certain privileges, one of them being able to exercisefaith in our Father. We are able,as Paul says, to come boldly untothe throne of grace. Hebrews 4:16:

Let us therefore come boldly unto

the throne of grace, that we mayobtain mercy, and nd grace tohelp in time of need.

Now, the Lord recognizes thateven though it is a privilege, someare so despondent, things are sodark, that they cant see throughthe clouds of despair. It is hard forthem to exercise their faith. It isin times like these that I especiallylike this quote from God throughSister White:

If you cannot rely upon your

own faith, rely upon the faith ofothers. We believe and hope foryou. God accepts our faith in yourbehalf. 2T 319.

Can you imagine the grace ofGod, to allow others to exercisetheir faith in your behalf? WhenI consider these aributes ofour heavenly Father, I beginto understand how and whythe heavenly intelligences are

constantly praising His name!Who can you serve that is morepitiful and merciful than our God?It reminds me of Psalm 103:14:

For he knoweth our frame; heremembereth that we are dust.

And again, what God saysin the book of Isaiah: For mythoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,

saith the LORD. For as the heavensare higher than the earth, so are myways higher than your ways, andmy thoughts than your thoughts.Isaiah 55:8-9.

The Lord is so good, so merciful, and so kind to us, that if we endup not turning to Him, it will becompletely our own faults. We willthen be asked the question:

And now, O inhabitants ofJerusalem, and men of Judah, judge,

I pray you, betwixt me and myvineyard. What could have beendone more to my vineyard, that Ihave not done in it? Isaiah 5:3-4.

Can you see why Sister Whitewas almost agonizing over the factthat we do not trust our heavenlyFather, that we dont utilize ourprivilege to exercise faith? Canyou also see why it is so importantfor us individually to exercise ourfaith? It may not be for us; it may be for our children, our spouses,

our church friends and others.Let us act as if we believe that we

are royalty, that we are indeed . . .children of the heavenly King!

n our last issue, we connectedClovis adoption of the Breviary

as the law code of his reign tothe establishment of a Nationalreligionthat of Catholicism. Inthe Breviary, an extract from theTheodosian code that upheld the

one and true Catholic faith gaveClovis the necessary legal vehicleto impose the orthodox faith on hissubjects and eliminate the Arianand any other creeds.

    Daniel 11:31 and 12:11 Analysis

Having now a rm foundationof the historical events, documents, and policies related to A.D. 508, thatunderstanding must be appliedand understood in the context ofDaniel 11:31 and 12:11. Well beginwith Daniel 11:31:

And arms shall stand on hispart, and they shall pollute thesanctuary of strength, and shalltake away the daily sacrice , and

they shall place the abominationthat maketh desolate. And arms shall stand on his part.

With condence we can say that itwas the arms of Clovis, the statesmilitary and political strength, thatallied itself with Catholicism. Andthey (Clovis and Catholicism)

shall pollute (symbiosis of churchand state) the sanctuary of strength.

Of strength should read theRock (masculine singular futuretense), as it is rightly translated in

the Hebrew. The Rock, of course,is none other than Jesus Christ, sothe phrase sanctuary of strengthcan be interpreted the sanctuaryof Christ. And shall take awaythe daily. (Sacrice is a suppliedword and does not belong in thetext.)

Thus far, three of the foursegments of Daniel 11:31 havebeen documented and interpreted

historically. The fourth part now becomes our focus, as a biblical,

historical, and inspired basis issought for a correct understandingof the abomination thatmaketh desolate. Note that the

abomination of desolation is notonly placed in Daniel 11:31, but

set up in Daniel 12:11:And they shall place the

abomination that maketh desolate. And they [Clovis and

Catholicism] shall place [or set up,Daniel 12:11] the abomination.

    Abomination, by its very

nature, is sin. It is abhorrent to God,disgusting to Him, espec. idolatryor (concr.) an idol. (See Strongs#8251, #8441.) In this case, as will be shown, the sin is idolatry, manifested in spiritual adultery.

Te Meaning o Abomination:Synonym or Idolatry

Due to the ominous role of

the abomination, it is prudent toexamine that word closely for fullunderstanding. Abomination, when used prophetically, appliesto both pagan and papal Rome. Itis employed three times in thebook of Daniel:

1Daniel 9:27 And for theoverspreading of abominationshe shall make it desolate, evenuntil the consummation, and thatdetermined shall be poured upon

the desolate. This refers to thepagan Romans with their idolatrousstandards in the siege, capture anddestruction of Jerusalem. This isthe Old Testament source to which

    Jesus referred in Mahew 24:15.

2Daniel 11:31 And they shallplace the abomination thatmaketh desolate. This refers topapal Rome.

3Daniel 12:11 And theabomination that makethdesolate set up. This is a repetitionand enlargement of Daniel 11:31,and also refers to papal Rome.

Each usage in Daniel is #8251in concordances and lexicons. Itis dened as something that is

abhorrent or blasphemous, oreven a blasphemous activity. . . .Most oen it is used as a synonymfor an idol or idolatry. WarrenBaker and Eugene Carpenter, TheComplete Word Study Dictionary:

    Old Testament , s.v. abomination(Chaanooga: AMG Publishers,2003), 1193.

Before applying that meaningto pagan and papal Rome, however, abominations six usesin the New Testament should beconsidered in conjunction with itsOld Testament usage.

1Mahew 24:15. Whenye therefore shall see theabomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place. . . . The

abomination spoken of hererefers to the pagan Roman armiessurrounding Jerusalem withtheir idolatrous standards. EllenWhite, in commenting on this, connects abomination withRomes idolatry:

When the idolatrous standardsof the Romans should be set up inthe holy ground which extended

some furlongs outside of the citywalls, then the followers of Christwere to nd safety in ight.Great Controversy, 26.

2Mark 13:14. But when yeshall see the abomination ofdesolation, spoken of by Danielthe prophet, standing where itought not, (let him that readethunderstand). . . . This is applied to

the same action by the same poweras in Mahew 24:15.

3Luke 16:15. Ye are they which justify yourselves beforemen; but God knoweth yourhearts: for that which is highly

esteemed among men isabomination in the sight ofGod. This refers to thingsmen permit or seek thatare in competition withtheir loyalty and homageto Godthings that Godtherefore hates. It indirectlyrefers to idolatry.

4Revelation 17:4. Andthe woman was arrayedin purple and scarlet colour,

and decked with gold andprecious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her handfull of abominations and lthinessof her fornication. This applies topapal Rome.

5Revelation 17:5. And upon herforehead was a name wrien,MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT,THE MOTHER OF HARLOTSAND ABOMINATIONS OF THE

EARTH. This again is applied topapal Rome.

6Revelation 21:27. And thereshall in no wise enter into itany thing that deleth, neitherwhatsoever worketh abomination,or maketh a lie. . . . This is appliedto all idolaters.

Thus twice in the NewTestament, abomination isspecically applied to pagan Rome

and twice to papal Rome. In eachcase, its meaning is dened assomething detestable--specically,as idolatry or idolatrous worship(Strongs #946).

And in the book of Daniel, thatsame meaning is once appliedto pagan Rome and twice topapal Rome. Idolatry is rejectionof God, defection from His lawand His principles, a preference

for another ruler--even self--whose inuence and values arepreferred above Gods. This is thesignicance and application of theterm abomination, the particular

sin referred to in these propheticScriptures.

Idolatry Maniested in Churchin Her Preerence

    or Power o the State

Exactly how this idolatrymanifested itself in the

abomination of prophecy, withinthe documented historical contextof a counterfeit worship systemand the growing symbiosis of

church and state, can be seen in aninvestigation of a related term ofequal signicancethat of spiritualfornication or spiritual adultery. Achurch can be guilty of the sin ofspiritual fornication or spiritualadultery in three ways.

1By the worship of idolatrousimages, which is spiritualunfaithfulness to Christ.

Thou has made to thyselfimages of men [idols] and did

commit whoredom [fornication]with them. Ezekiel 16:17.

By worshiping images, ancientIsrael was unfaithful to God. Shecommied adultery with sticksand stones. Jeremiah 3:6, 9.

2By the church becomingfriendly with the degenerateworld. Ye adulterers andadulteresses, know ye not that the

friendship of the world is enmitywith God? James 4:4.

3By the union of church andstate. Render therefore toall their dues: tribute to whomtribute is due; custom to whom

custom; fear to whom fear;honour to whom honour.Romans 13:7.

By illicit or forbiddenunion, the church commitsspiritual adultery. InScripture, the spiritualhusband of the church is

Jesus Christ. If a churchunites with or receivesfavors of one who is nother husband, she commits

    spiritual adultery orspiritual fornication. That

unlawful union occurs when thekings, rulers or civil powers of thestate unite with the church and/orsupport the churchs interests andaims. It occurs when the churchforsakes its dependence upondivine grace and power, preferringinstead earthly power, usually asexpressed in legislative decrees. She thus devotes her energies and

priorities to a mutual relationshipwith someone or somethingother than the One who deservessuch aention. It is spiritualunfaithfulness, spiritual adultery,in the sight of God. Her unlawfulact is a form of idolatry. (PastorAustin P. Cooke, with many thanksfor his portions of information)

Abomination in Daniel isUnion o Church and State

In sum, the abomination orsin of idolatry that is spoken of inDaniel 11:31 and 12:11 refers to theamalgamation or union of churchand state. That is the specic sinreferred to in those verses of Danielsprophetic vision. The church hadcommied spiritual adultery andhad married one other than herspiritual husband, Jesus Christ. In

this study of abomination in theOld Testament and the New, in thecontext being addressed, Romesrole in prophetic history is thusrmly established. Rejecting Christ, the Church of Rome had transferredher dependence, welcomed the

inuence of, and given her undueaection and allegiance to thestate, thereby crossing a forbiddenline into idolatry. It can now besummarized that the abominationthat desolates = idolatry = spiritualadultery = alliance of church andstate = Rome.

wo Swords Teory:Church Sword More Powerul

This idolatrous developmentand the seing-up process in 508came about from church policyunder Pope Gelasius I:

A.D. 492 Gelasius I became thenew pope on March 3, 492, and diedon November 21, 496, thus endinghis ponticate of only four years, eight months and eighteen days.During this short time, however,he established the two swordstheory, which set forth the churchs

foundational understanding ofchurch and state relationship.A.D. 494 Pope Gelasius I wrote

to Emperor Anastasius, declaringthe theory of the two swords, ortwo powers, governing the world.

There are two . . . by which theworld is chiey ruled: the sacredauthority (auctoritas) of bishopsand the royal power (potestas). Ofthose the responsibility of bishopsis more weighty insofar as they willanswer also for the kings of men

themselves at divine judgment. The popes did not claim to wieldthe temporal sword but to direct itsproper use. . . . Gelasius conceivedchurch governance as analogous tothat exercised by temporal rulers. This juridical understanding of thepapacy guided papal theory andpractice in subsequent centuries. The two swords theory maintainedthat secular leaders were subject

to the popes spiritual authority.J. Michael Miller, The Shepherd andthe Rock: Origins, Development, and

Mission of the Papacy (Huntington,IN: Our Sunday Visitor Publishing,1995), 94-5. Imprimatur.

    The two swords

    theory maintained

    that secular leaders

    were subject to

    the popes spiritual

    authority.

A.D. 495 Pope Gelasius I wasthe rst pope at a Roman synodto be saluted as Vicar of Christ.Ibid., 101.

A.D. 501 (Pope Symmachus,A.D. 498-514) The church councilin Rome pronounced sentence onOctober 23, 501, that no humancourt could judge the pope; Godalone could do that. Thus the popewas ocially exalted above every

other man. Thus it was that menacknowledged that they had nopower to judge the Pope. St. Avitus,Bishop of Vienne, had declared before the opening of the council:To question the authority of thePope of Rome is to overthrow notone bishop alone, but the wholeEpiscopate. Fernand Hayward,

A History of The Popes (New York:Duon, 1931), 76. Trans. from theFrench by monks of St. Augustines

Abbey, Ramsgate. See alsoArchibald Bower, The History of thePopes (London: 1750), 2:261-2.

    rue Church Made Desolate

In developing the identity ofthe abomination, Daniel 11:31describes its distinctive action:

    . . . that maketh desolate. When

church and state amalgamate, thefruit of that union will always beone of force. To conrm this, all onehas to do is read the four verses aerDaniel 11:31. All too well, historyconrms that Rome physicallydesolated Christs true church

for nearly 1260 long years. By theacts of Clovis and Catholicism, theunion of church and state had beenconceivedin A.D. 508.

The mingling of church craand statecra is represented bythe iron and the clay. This unionis weakening all the power ofthe churches. This investing thechurch with the power of the statewill bring evil results. Men havealmost passed the point of Godsforbearance. They have invested

    their strength in politics, and haveunited with the papacy. But the timewill come when God will punishthose who have made void His law,and their evil work will recoil uponthemselves. Manuscript 63, 1899;

Manuscript Releases, Vol. 1, 12-13.Once again Ellen White rightly

directs us to the foundational issue, the uniting of church and stateaer the passing of A.D. 476. Thebride of Christ (the church) cannot

unite with the state in any degree, for to do so is to practice idolatryand commit spiritual adultery, andthus the church separates herselffrom Christ.

    Desolation Began in AD 508

The facts have revealed thatthe abomination (or sin) that

desolates was set up (Daniel12:11). What had taken place was theamalgamation or union of church

and state. The two swords theoryproposed by Pope Gelasius I had become accepted church and statepolicy, which in turn brought literaldesolation to the Christian church.Simultaneously, the daily was

taken away (Daniel 12:11) when thefalse gospel of the papal mediatorialsystem was established as the oneand true Catholic faith. Clyde Pharr,The Theodosian Code and Novels and theSirmondian Constitutions (Clark, New Jersey: Lawbook Exchange, 2001),

    476. Clyde Pharr lists the Breviary ofAlaric law codes in his footnotes fortitle 11 on pg. 476. See also pg. 600.

It is important to note that thosefrom whom understanding ofChrists heavenly mediation was

taken away were the true peopleof God, spiritual Israel. They werewaiting by faith for the Lords return, but when the false mediatorialsystem was imposed, free exercise ofnon-Catholic faiths was proscribedand compulsion of Sunday worship

instituted. As error and superstitiongrew dominant, confusion increasedin Gods faithful waiting ones. Overtime they became so completelyoblivious to the ongoing work in theheavenly sanctuary that, by 1844,Gods people actually believed thesanctuary to be cleansed was theearth! They simply had no awarenessof Jesus priestly ministry in theheavenly sanctuary until speciclight was given to reestablish thatunderstanding. To say, then, that

the daily, meaning Christsrst-apartment mediation, wasnot intentionally removed, takenaway or obscured from humanmindfulness is a denial of some ofthe most obvious facts of history.

The one and true Catholicfaith having been legislativelyestablished, then, it was enforced bythe state as the law of the land. Allother faiths were prohibited.

    Thus Satan succeeded in turning

the people away from Christ(heavenward) to man (earthward),nay, more, to the prince of darknesshimself, which indeed broughtspiritual desolation to millions oftrue Christians. Now it can be seenthat the one was being taken awayat the same time that the other onewas being set up. Both nd theirprophetic commencement in A.D.508 (Daniel 11:31; 12:11 and 8:11).

The warning that Paul had giventhe church in II Thessalonians 2:3-

12 regarding the mystery of iniquitythen began to take on real meaning. And in reference to spiritualdevastation, Ellen White adds thisparticular:

This degrading confession ofman to man is the secret springfrom which has owed much of theevil that is deling the world anding it for the nal destruction.Great Controversy, 567.

Te Host is Part o Desolation

It is of interest to mention thatPope Symmachus (A.D. 498-514),the bishop of Rome who reignedthrough the time period of 508,has been recognized by Catholic

historians for one of his great feats.During his ponticate, throughordination, he created one hundredand seventeen bishops, ninety-twopriests, and sixteen deacons, TheChevalier Artaud De Montor, PopeSymmachus [A.D. 498-514], TheLives and Times of the Popes (n.p.:Catholic Publication Society, 1911),1:150. Imprimatur.

It was a number that no previouspope had matched up to the reignof Pope Symmachus. A. T. Jones

rightfully declared. It was byreason of transgression, that is, byreason of sin, that this power gainedthe host that was used to cast downthe truth to the ground, to shutaway from the church and the worldChrists priesthood, His ministry, and His sanctuary; and to cast itall down to the ground and treadit underfoot. Indeed, a host wasgiven him. The Consecrated Way toChristian Perfection, Chapter 13.

    Prophecy Fulflled Ater AD 476

It is now appropriate to address acommon error that church and statehad already merged prior to A.D.508, a view that would invalidatethe prophetic interpretation herepresented and supported. Thosewho advocate that historicalunderstanding have done so bywalking away from the text into

private interpretation. In Daniel7:24-25, one can observe that theissues involved in this prophecy donot come about until aer the tendivisions of the Western RomanEmpire have come onto the stage ofaction. That means that antichristand all its prophetic issues do notcome into focus until sometimeaer A.D. 476. Anything prior to thisin connection to this prophecy is

immaterial. We must look for churchand state issues aer this time.

    Defning ake Away

In our May issue we said that,

in regard to the terms take awayor taken away in Daniel 11:31and 12:11, we would return to thisHebrew word rum7311 in Daniel8:11 to consider the possibility thatDaniel wanted to convey the ideaof exalt or take away or both, incontrast to the Hebrew word sur.5493Now that it has been documentedwhat really took place in 508,we can address this issue withcondence. The research of BrotherGerhard Pfandl, Associate Director

of the Biblical Research Institute,General Conference of Seventh-dayAdventists, will sele the maermost eectively. We quote from hisndings about rums meaning:

Peters . . . argues that in Daniel8:11 it should also be translatedlied up (see above). However, there is a reason for this exceptionin Daniel 8:11. The verbal root rumin Hiphil/Hophal, the basic meaningof which is bring alo, raise up, li

up (HALOT, 3:1204), takes on aspecic meaning in clauses with thepreposition min (from) and a director prepositional object. Proebstlehas made a study of the twenty-three passages where rum appearswith the preposition min and director prepositional objects (Lev 2:9; 4:8,10, 19; 6:8; Num 17:2; 18:26, 28, 29, 30,

    32; 31:28, 52; 1 Sam 2:8; 1 Kgs 14:7;16:2; Isa 14:13; 57:14; Ezek 45:1; Ps 75:7;89:20; 113:7; Dan 8:11; all referencesare according to the Hebrew Bible)and has come to the followingconclusions:

    1. If the object is not personal,

i.e., a physical object or part of a(dead) animal, rum designates theactivity of removing or seing asidesomething from a larger group ofwhich that object was a part (See Lev2:9; 4:8, 10, 19; 6:8; Num 17:2; 18:26, 28,29, 30, 32; 31:28, 52; Isa 14:13; 57:14;Ezek 45:1). To illustrate this point Iwill quote a few texts:

Lev 2:9 the priest shall take [rum]from [min] the grain oering

Num 17:2 Tell Eleazar . . . to pickup [rum] the censers out of [min]

the blazeEzek 45:1 when you divide the

land by lot into inheritance, youshall set apart [rum] a district forthe LORD, a holy section of [min]the land

    2. If the object is a person, theactivity of separation or removalexpressed by rum takes on theadditional notion of exaltation. Aperson is separated from a groupto a higher status, usually by God

    Himself (See 1 Sam 2:8; 1 Kgs 14:7;16:2; Ps 75:7; 89:20; 113:7).1 Sam 2:8 [God] lis [rum] the

beggar from [min] the ash heap, Toset them among princes

Ps 113:7 I have exalted [rum] onechosen from [min] the people.

In other words, in a cultic context[Ed.: in a context of a system of religious

worship] rum in Hiphil/Hophalmeans to set aside or to remove, whereas when the context refersto social status it means to exalt.Parallel expressions to rum, e. g., surremove (Lev 4:9, 31, 35; Ezek 21:31;45:9) and badal in Niphal separate

[oneself] (Num 8:14; 16:21) provideclear support for the conclusion thatrum in a cultic context always meansto set apart, remove.

Applying what we have justlearned to Daniel 8:11 b we come tothe following conclusions:

    1. In Daniel 8:11, in a culticcontext, the object is impersonal. The word rum, therefore, designatesthe activity of removing or seingaside the tamid.

    2. The preposition min indicates

from whom the tamid is removed. And as indicated above, the personfrom whom the tamid is removed isthe Prince of the Host and not the lilehorn. Gerhard Pfandl, Evaluation of

time. It was aer the man of sinhad thought to change times andthe laws that the Bible says he wasthen to begin his reign to practiceand to prosper for a time andtimes and the dividing of time. That is, for 1260 long years, whichbegan in AD 538.

If it can be documented that theRoman Catholic Church decreeda Sunday law in A.D. 538, therebycompelling the conscience, history

and prophecy will have a perfectt with far-reaching implications.Hefeles History of the ChurchCouncils provides key information.

    HIRD SYNOD AORLEANS, A.D. 538.

The third Synod of Orleans, like the second, was not merely aprovincial Synod, since bishopsof several ecclesiastical provinces

took part in it. The presidentwas the Metropolitan Lupusof Lyons, although the city anddiocese of Orleans did not belongto his province, but to that ofSens. Besides him were presentthe Metropolitans Pantagathusof Vienne, Leo of Sens, Arcadiusof Bourges, and Flavius of Rouen. The Archbishop of Tours, Injurious, was represented by a priest. The

Acts were subscribed by nineteen bishops, and seven priests asrepresentatives of absentees. In thesubscription of Archbishop Lupus, the time of the holding of the Synodis given as Die Nonarum mensistertii, quarto post consulatum paulini

junioris V.C.anno 27 regni DominiChildebertiRegis. This indicates theyear 538 , and probably the 7th ofMay, since in ancient times it wascommon to begin the year withthe 25th of March. The assembledbishops declare their aim to be thereestablishment of the old lawsof the church and the passing ofnew ones. This they accomplishedin thirty-three canons, many of

which contain several ordinances.Charles Joseph Hefele,A History ofthe Councils of the Church(Edinburgh:T. and T., 1895), 4:204-9.

It is signicant that the third

synod of Orleans, France, in A.D.538, was not merely a provincialsynod, meaning a local one, narrowor limited in scope. The bishopsassembled on that date for thespecic purpose of reestablishingthe old laws and the passingof new ones. They producedthirty-three canons at this synod.Hefele paraphrases the twenty-eighth canon of the new lawsof the church with lile justice

to the original Latin.28. It is a Jewish superstition

that it is unlawful to ride or driveon Sunday, or do anything for thedecoration of house or person. Buteld labors are forbidden, so thatpeople may be able to come to

church and worship. If anyone actsotherwise, he is to be punished, not by the laity, but by the bishop.Ibid., 208-9.

The original wording of thetwenty-eighth canon, as it istranslated from the original Latindocument into uent English, reads thus:

    28. Whereas the people arepersuaded that they ought not to

travel on the Lords day with thehorses, or oxen and carriages, orto prepare anything for food, orto do anything conducive to thecleanliness of houses or men, things

which belong to Jewish rather thanChristian observances; we haveordained that on the Lords daywhat was before lawful to be donemay still be done. But from ruralwork, i.e., plowing, cultivatingvines, reaping, mowing, thrashing, clearing away thorns or hedging,we judge it beer to abstain, thatthe people may the more readilycome to the churches and haveleisure for prayers. In this church law [of AD 538]there is irrefutable evidence of the

    Prophetic Signifcanceo Sunday Law

In this primary source documentof church law there is irrefutableevidence of the compelling of theconscience by the church. Thephrase we have ordained is ofparticular signicance. Reasoningfrom the denition in WebstersDictionary , ordained is to decree, order, establish, enact or to appointSunday in direct opposition to the

fourth commandment of the Lawof God. Rural work was prohibitedfor the rst time, thus perfectlyfullling the prediction of theprophet: And he shall speak [bylegislation] great words against themost High. Daniel 7:25.

As we shall see from the penof Ellen White and foretold byprophecy, the papal power castdown the truth to the ground (a

direct quote from Daniel 8:12). Thelaw of God was to be cast down andtrampled in the dust at a specictime in earths history.

Among the leading causes thathad led to the separationof the true church from

Rome was the hatred ofthe laer toward the BibleSabbath. As foretold byprophecy, the papal powercast down the truth to theground. The law of God wastrampled in the dust, whilethe traditions and customsof men were exalted. Thechurches that were underthe rule of the papacy wereearly compelled to honor

the Sunday as a holy day. Amid the

    prevailing error and superstition,

many, even of the true people of God, became so bewildered that whilethey observed the Sabbath, they refrained from laboralso on the Sunday. But thisdid not satisfy the papalleaders. They demandednot only that Sunday behallowed, but that theSabbath be profaned; and

they denounced in thestrongest language thosewho dared to show it honor. It was only by eeing fromthe power of Rome thatany could obey Gods lawin peace. Great Controversy, 65.

Here is the phenomenal statementthat fully conrms our applicationand interpretation of Daniel 8:12and the prophetic event that heaven

declared commenced the beginningof the 1260 year prophecy:

The change in the fourthcommandment exactly fullls theprophecy. For this the only authorityclaimed is that of the church. Herethe papal power openly sets itself

above God. Great Controversy, 446.(See Source Book for all additionaldocumentation, including theuprooting of the three horns.)

    Hefele paraphrases canon thirty-three thus:

No bishop may transgress thesecanons. Charles Joseph Hefele, AHistory of the Councils of the Church(Edinburgh: T. and T., 1895), 4:209.See also Joannes DominicusMansi, Sacrorum Conciliorum novaet amplissima collection. (A facsimile

    reproduction of the Florence editionof 1759; reprinted, rearranged,Catholic Church Councils,1901-1927), 9:20 (1902).

The parallel is ironic. Godwrote His Ten Commandmentsin stone; and the church,in this council, wrote herSunday sabbath in gurativestone when she aested toits implacable intention. The year was A.D. 538.

    Man o Sin at Work

In A.D. 538 we now have a perfect

application of 2 Thessalonians 2:4.The archdeceiver had not

completed his work. He was resolvedto gather the Christian worldunder his banner and to exercise

his power through his vicegerent, the proud ponti who claimedto be the representative of Christ.Through half-converted pagans, ambitious prelates, and world-loving churchmen he accomplishedhis purpose. Vast councils were

held from time to time, in whichthe dignitaries of the church wereconvened from all the world. Innearly every council the Sabbathwhich God had instituted waspressed down a lile lower, whilethe Sunday was correspondinglyexalted. Thus the pagan festivalcame nally to be honored as adivine institution, while the BibleSabbath was pronounced a relicof Judaism, and its observerswere declared to be accursed. The

great apostate had succeeded inexalting himself above all that iscalled God, or that is worshiped. 2Thessalonians 2:4. He had daredto change the only precept of thedivine law that unmistakably pointsall mankind to the true and livingGod. In the fourth commandment,God is revealed as the Creator of theheavens and the earth, and is therebydistinguished from all false gods. Itwas as a memorial of the work of

creation that the seventh day wassanctied as a rest day for man. Itwas designed to keep the living Godever before the minds of men as thesource of being and the object ofreverence and worship. Satan strivesto turn men from their allegianceto God, and from renderingobedience to His law; thereforehe directs his eorts especiallyagainst that commandment which

points to God as the Creator.Great Controversy, 53-4.

The very foundation of our faithis involved in this understanding. We will examine to see if the Bible

I n all the details of life,Christians are to follow theprinciples of strict integrity. These are not the principles thatgovern the world; for there Satan ismaster, and his principles of decep-tion and oppression bear sway. ButChristians serve under a dierentmaster, and their actions must bewrought in God. They must putaside all desire for selsh gain.

To some, deviation from perfectfairness in business deal may looklike a small thing, but our Saviourdoes not thus regard it. His wordson this point are plain and explicit:

He that is faithful in that which isleast is faithful also in much; andhe that is unjust in the least is un-

just also in much. A man who willoverreach in a small maer willoverreach in a large maer if thetemptation comes to him.

    Christs followers are obliged

to be more or less connected withthe world in business maers. InHis prayer for them the Savioursays, I pray not that thou shouldsttake them out of the world, but thatthou shouldst keep them from theevil. Christians are to buy andsell with the realization that theeye of God is upon them. Neverare they to use false balancesor deceitful weights. God says:--

Thou shalt not have in thy bagdivers weights, a great and a small.. . . But thou shalt have a perfectand just weight, a perfect and justmeasure shalt thou have; that thydays may be lengthened in theland which the Lord thy God giv-

eth thee. For all that do such things, and all that do unrighteously, arean abomination unto the Lord thyGod. Thou shalt not oppressan hired servant that is poor andneedy, whether he be of thy breth-ren, or of thy strangers that are inthy land within thy gates; at his daythou shalt give him his hire, nei-

    ther shall the sun go down upon it;for he is poor, and seeth his heartupon it; lest he cry against theeunto the Lord, and it be sin untothee. . . . Thou shalt not pervert thejudgment of the stranger nor of thefatherless; nor take a widows rai-ment to pledge. . . . When thou cut-test down thine harvest in thy eld,and hast forgot a sheaf in the eld,thou shalt not go again to fetch it;

it shall be for the stranger, for thefatherless, and for the widow; thatthe Lord thy God may bless thee inall the work of thine hands. Whenthou beatest thine olive tree, thoushalt not go over the boughs again;it shall be for the stranger, for

the fatherless, and for the widow. When thou gatherest the grapes ofthy vineyard, thou shalt not gleanit aerward; it shall be for thestranger, for the fatherless, and forthe widow.

In every action of life the trueChristian is just what he desiresthose around him to think he is. He

is guided by truth and uprightness. He does not scheme; therefore hehas nothing to gloss over. He maybe criticized, he may be tested; butthrough all, his unbending integ-rity shines out like pure gold. He isa friend and benefactor to all con-nected with him; and his fellow-men place condence in him; forhe is trustworthy. Does he employlaborers to gather in his harvest?

He does not keep back their hard-earned money. Has he means forwhich he has no immediate use?He relieves the necessities of hisless fortunate brother. He does notseek to enlarge his possessions bytaking advantage of the untowardcircumstances of his neighbor. He

accepts only a fair price for thatwhich he sells. If there are defectsin the articles sold, he frankly tellsthe buyer, even tho by so doing hemay seem to work against his ownpecuniary interests.

A man may not have a pleasantexterior; but if he has a reputationfor straightforward, honest deal-ing, he is respected. Stern integritycovers many unpleasant traits ofcharacter. A man who steadfastlyadheres to the truth wins the con-

dence of all. Not only do Christianstrust him; worldlings are con-strained to acknowledge the worthof his character.

Satan knows full well what apower for good is the life of a manof unbending integrity, and he putsforth zealous eorts to prevent menfrom living such lives. He comesto them with alluring temptations, promising them wealth, position, worldly honor, if they will but

yield the principles of righteous-ness. And he has much success.Thousands yield to his bribery. Thedesire for wealth, for fame, for po-sition, is too powerful for them toresist. Forgeing God, they with-draw their aection from Him, andworship mammon.

From the sad history of manywho have failed we learn the dan-ger of prosperity. It is not those whohave lost their property who are ingreatest danger, but those who have

obtained a fortune. Adversity maydepress, but prosperity frequentlyelevates to presumption. Prayer isoen requested for men and womenin aiction; and this is right. Butthose in prosperity are more in needof the prayers of Gods servants; forthey are in greater danger of losingsalvation. In the valley of humilia-tion men walk securely while theyreverence God and make Him their

trust. On the loy pinnacle, wherepraise is heard, they need the helpof special power from above.

True religion . . . isan actual imitation

    o Christ.

Seeing the fearful danger of loveof gain, Paul writes: They that will be rich fall into temptation and asnare, and into many foolish andhurtful lusts, which drown menin destruction and perdition. Forthe love of money is the root of allevil; which while some coveted af-ter, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through

with many sorrows. But thou, Oman of God, ee these things; andfollow aer righteousness, godli-ness, faith, love, patience, meekness.. . . Charge them that are rich in thisworld, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, butin the living God, who giveth usrichly all things to enjoy; that theydo good, that they be rich in goodworks, ready to distribute, willingto communicate; laying up in store

for themselves a good foundationagainst the time to come, that theymay lay hold on eternal life.

The temptation comes to a manto pursue a wrong course for thesake of gaining money. He yields, and commits himself to that whichthe Lord can not indorse. And dailythe spiritual life of that man growsweaker. Daily he wanders fartherfrom true happiness.

The sad history of Judas is a les-son for all. Judas was blessed with

wonderful opportunities. He waswith Christ during the entire pe-riod of the Saviours ministry. Day by day for three years he listenedto His instruction and witnessedHis marvelous works. Had he beenwilling to renounce all selshness, the Lord would have used him toadvance His kingdom. But Judasloved gain. He was a speculator. Hethought that he could manage the

nances of the church, and so makemoney. Stronger and stronger grewhis covetousness, till at last he soldhis Master for thirty pieces of silver.

How many today are like Judas betraying their Lord! How manyare sacricing principle for thesake of worldly gain! Thus they

crucify Christ afresh, and putHim to open shame.

Those in prosperityare . . . in greaterdanger o losing

    salvation.

In the smallest as well as the

largest aairs of life the rst ques-tion should be, What is Gods will?

To obey is beer than sacrice, andto hearken than the fat of rams.Christ calls upon His children torid themselves of all selshness, allcovetousness, all impurity. Comeunto Me, He says, and I will giveyou rest. Yield yourselves to Mytraining. Submit your will to Mywill, your way to My way. Let yourlife be one with My life. So shall

you gain treasure that will endureunto life eternal.True religion is not an experi-

ment. It is an actual imitation ofChrist. God keeps a personal ac-count with every man, testing himby the practical results of his work.Soon will be heard the call, Give anaccount of thy stewardship.

2 Chronicles 34:1-2 Josiah waseight years old when he began toreign, and he reigned in Jerusalemone and thirty years. And he didthat which was right in the sight of

the LORD, and walked in the waysof David his father, and declinedneither to the right hand, nor to thele.

Not only was he young andcommied to the Lord, but the Bi-ble says that there was no king likehim . . . ever!

God was so happy with Josiahshumble heart that He promised Jo-siah that he would not let him seeall the evil that was to come; that he

would go to his grave in peace.2 Kings 22:19-20 Because thineheart was tender, and thou hasthumbled thyself before the LORD,when thou heardest what I spakeagainst this place, and against theinhabitants thereof, that they should become a desolation and a curse, and hast rent thy clothes, and wept before me; I also have heard thee, saith the LORD. Behold therefore,I will gather thee unto thy fathers, and thou shalt be gathered into thy

grave in peace; and thine eyes shallnot see all the evil which I will bringupon this place. And they broughtthe king word again.

Prey impressive endorsement, wouldnt you say? Surely a manwith such impeccable credentials,a king that was like no other king, either before or aer, with such ahumble heart, could not be takenin the snare of pride! But the scrip-tures tell a dierent story, one youmay not be familiar with. You dontreally learn about this incident untilthe end of his story in 2 Chronicles:

    Josiah Hearkened Not

2 Chronicles 35:20-24 Aer allthis, when Josiah had prepared thetemple, Necho king of Egypt cameup to ght against Carchemish by Euphrates: and Josiah went outagainst him. But he sent ambassa-dors to him, saying, What have I todo with thee, thou king of Judah? I

come not against thee this day, butagainst the house wherewith I havewar: for God commanded me tomake haste: forbear thee from med-dling with God, who is with me, thathe destroy thee not. Nevertheless

Josiah would not turn his face fromhim, but disguised himself, that

he might ght with him, and hear-

kened not unto the words of Nechofrom the mouth of God, and came toght in the valley of Megiddo. Andthe archers shot at king Josiah; and

the king said to his servants, Haveme away; for I am sore wounded. His servants therefore took himout of that chariot, and put himin the second chariot that he had;and they brought him to Jerusalem,

and he died. . . .Note that the Bible says Josiah

hearkened not unto the words ofNecho from the mouth of God.These words were Gods words. When I rst read it, my thoughtswere, Well, maybe Josiah didnt re-alize they were words from the Lord.

Aer all, he was so humble. That

was, until I read what Sister Whitehad to say about it:

Read the history of Josiah. Hehad done a good work. During his

    Why?--Because he did not heed thewarnings given. . . . [2 Chronicles34:26-33; 35:20-24 quoted.]

    Fatal Pride

    Because Josiah died in bale,

who will charge God with denyingHis word that Josiah should go tohis grave in peace? The Lord did notgive orders for Josiah to make waron the king of Egypt. When the Lordgave the king of Egypt orders thatthe time had come to serve Him bywarfare, and the ambassadors told Josiah not to make war on Necho,no doubt Josiah congratulated him-self that no word from the Lord hadcome directly to him. To turn backwith his army would have been hu-

miliating, so he went on. And be-cause of this, he was killed in bale,a bale that he should not have hadanything to do with. The man whohad been so greatly honored by theLord, did not honor the word of God.The Lord had spoken in his favor, predicted good things for him; and

Josiah became self-condent, andfailed to heed the warning. He wentagainst the word of God, choosingto follow his own way, and God

could not shield him from the con-sequences of his act. 2BC 1039.This young, humble, courageous,

zealous king, commended by Godand promised peace, was overcomeby the

devil and becameself-condent. Hedecided to choosehis own way be-cause it wouldhave been hu-miliating to do

otherwise. We are toldin 1 Corinthi-ans 10:11 Nowall these thingshappened untothem for en-samples: and theyare wrien for ouradmonition, uponwhom the ends of theworld are come. What hap-pened to Josiah is Satans plan

for each one of us. We must remainever vigilant.

    Heed This Warning

Satan is now more earnestly en-gaged in playing the game of lifefor souls than at any previous time;and unless we are constantly onour guard, he will establish in ourhearts, pride, love of self, love of theworld, and many other evil traits.

He will also use every possible de-vice to unsele our faith in God andin the truths of His Word. If we havenot a deep experience in the thingsof God, if we have not a thoroughknowledge of His Word, we shall be

beguiled to our ruin by the er-rors and sophistries of the

enemy. False doctrineswill sap the founda-

tions of many, be-cause they have

    not learned to

discern truthfrom error. Ouronly safeguardagainst thewiles of Satanis to study theScriptures dili-

faithfullyto perform every known duty. Theindulgence of one known sin willcause weakness and darkness, andsubject us to erce temptation. RHNov. 19, 1908; 2 SM 58.

    Pride Affects Discernment

Please remember, God says:There is nothing so oensive toGod or so dangerous to the human

soul as pride and self-suciency.COL 154. And when God says thereis nothing so oensive to Me, it issomething we should take very se-riously. I think it is so oensive be-cause He knows what it does to ourhearts and our spiritual eyesight. When we become proud, things thatGod requires sound humiliating tous and we refuse to do them. Canyou see the evil in this? We donteven recognize it as doing wronganymore; we see it as actually doing

God a service. John 16:2: They shall put you

certainty a harvest of souls, for theLord has promised, My Word shallnot return unto Me void, but shallaccomplish that which I please.

    A Word in Season

Recently I was in a home show-ing books to a family. I explainedto them the great truth of Jesuswillingness to forgive each one of

us our sins and also to create in us aclean heart. Ps. 51:10. The wife wasfamiliar with Ps. 51:10 and said shehad learned it as a girl. Aer I hadwrien up the order and deliveredthe books, I asked to have prayerwith the family. Then, as I wasleaving, I noticed the lady had tearsin her eyes. I believe the Lord hadtouched her heart. We are told inDesire of Ages, p. 504-5, that many, many, have fainted and become

discouraged in the great struggle oflife, when one word of kindly cheerwould have strengthened them toovercome. Some time back I alsoread where she says that there aremany people who will perish un-less they hear from human lipsthe great truth that Jesus will for-give them of their sins. So I oenmention this as Im explaining the

    books to a customer.

    The Harvest is Ripe

Recently I worked a day withanother literature evangelist. Westopped at a home where he hadsold a set of The Conict

    of the Ages,

including Desire of Ages and GreatControversy. We delivered the set tothe family. While there we talkedto the wife about prophecy and the

book of Revelation. She was so fas-cinated that she said, Youve got

to come and visit us again. I wentback a couple more times. On thethird visit I talked to the lady againabout current events and the signsof the end. While I was there at thedoor, her husband returned fromwork. So I briey recounted to himwhat I had just said to his wife. Ithen gave them a National SundayLaw book and had prayer.

    Aerwards, the lady asked me,

result this brought and how Franceaerward turned back to and recog-nized the Bible as of God.

At this point I knew I didnt havemuch time, so I quoted the text fromthe Bible that says, What shall itprot a man if he shall gain the wholeworld and lose his own soul?

He responded by throwing up both his hands and saying loudlyand angrily, I have had enough ofthis conversation!

I then looked him in the eyeand said soly, I can understandthat, but I care about you. If I giveyou this book, will you at least read

this one chapter about the nation ofFrance? He said he would and tookthe book. I praise God for soeningthat mans heart.

    Plea from the Field

Dear fellow soldier in the ser-vice of Christ, may I urge you to getyour hands on the book Colporteur

Ministry. It is a most eloquent and ur-

gent appeal for the revival of the can-vassing work. Note the following:

I have been instructed that the

canvassing work is to be revived, and that it is to be carried forwardwith increasing success. P. 17.

Let every believer scaer broad-cast tracts and leaets and bookscontaining the message for thistime. We need colporteurs who will

go forth to circulate our publicationseverywhere. P. 21.

From the light given me Iknow that where there is one can-vasser in the eld, there should beone hundred.

There is a work that should bedone. The end is near. Already muchtime has been lost, when these books

should have been in circulation. Sellthem far and near. Scaer them likethe leaves of Autumn. This work is

to continue without the forbiddingsof anyone. Souls are perishing outof Christ. Let them be warned ofHis soon appearing in the cloudsof heaven. P. 25.

I pray that God will hold back thefour winds and raise up workers.

(See Testimonies, Vo. 5, p. 717.) I praythat YOU will be one of those whowill feel a love for the lost and getthis message to them with all thelove and urgency that this messagedemands. MARANATHA!!

    Childrens Story

    MissJennysC

    at

Miss Jenny loved her catPeabody and he lovedher. He would come

when she called, but not whensomeone else did. When she camehome from work, he would run tomeet her. She would pick him upand hug him and talk to him, and

he would purr so loudly. When shesat down, he seled next to herorin her lap--and purred. When sheworked in her garden, he stayedclose by, and at night he slept onher bed.

When Peabody was outside,he hardly ever le the back yardwhere Miss Jenny spent so muchtime with him. And thats why itwas so strange that she couldntnd him one day.

Miss Jenny realized she hadntseen Peabody for several hours.Upstairs and downstairs she went, calling him. Usually he came run-ning, but not this time. Outside shewent, around the house, but no Pe-abody. Finally, a very worried Miss

Jenny came next door, to talk to mymother.

Franny, please help me look forPeabody. I dont know whats hap-pened to him. I havent seen himsince this morning. Ive looked and

called everywhere, but he didntcome. Im so scared something hashappened to him.

Mom agreed immediately to join the search, and she enlistedmy help, too. Even though I wasonly eight years old, I could helpas much as any grown-up. Katie, your job is to walk up and downthe street. Look and call for Pea-body. Since youve peed him many

times, maybe if hes lost and fright-ened, he will come if he recognizesyour familiar voice. What we allhoped I wouldnt nd is Peabodyrun over or hit by a car. We didntsay that out loud, of course, for thatwould have upset Miss Jenny evenmore.

Then Mom said to Miss Jenny,

Why dont you go back home andlook in every closet and basket inyour house. Maybe Peabody didntcome because hes stuck behind adoor or sleeping in a cozy basket.

Aer we prayed together for afruitful search, Miss Jenny and Ihurried o in dierent directionsand Mom searched under all Miss

Jennys bushes. I hadnt gone morethan six or seven houses beforeMom called my name. I looked

back to see her wave me home. Shewas smiling, so that meant Peabodymust have been found!

Youll never guess where Pea- body was, she laughed. Miss Jenny shut him in her closet thismorning aer she got dressed. Hewas sleeping among her shoeswhen she found him. Shes homemaking a big fuss over him rightnow.

Later that day, a happy Miss Jenny came over to thank us

for our help. I was so scared, she said. All I wanted wasto see my Peabody aliveagain and hear his purr-ing. Thank God hes okay.

Then her face turnedthoughtful and serious, and she said something Ivenever forgoen. You know, itoccurred to me when I was thank-ing God for his safe return, that I

dont think Ive ever wanted God inmy heart as much as I wanted mycat back. And that made me thinkthat as much as I love my cat, hemust never be as important to meas my Savior is. My cat doesnt loveme like Jesus does, and only Jesuscan save me. Todays experienceshowed me Ive got to get my prior-ities straight. God rst, everythingelse secondeven Peabody.

Miss Jenny learned an impor-tant lesson that day, and because ofher, Mom and I did, too. God rst.

    Always.

    Aspartame Linked toObesity and Cancers

Neurosurgeon Russell BlaylockM.D. commented: The new studyreleased in the European Journalof Oncologyshould terrify moth-ers and all those consuming as-partame sweetened products. This

was a carefully done study whichclearly demonstrates a statisti-cally signicant increase in severaltypes of lymphomas and leukemiain rats. Both of these malignancieshave increased signicantly in thiscountry since the widespread useof aspartame.

This study conrmed the pre-vious studywhich also found theformaldehyde breakdown productof aspartame to be damaging tocellular DNA and that this dam-

age was accumulative. The type ofdamage was a duplicate of that as-sociated with cancers. Along withthis most recent study, this meansthat drinking a single diet colasweetened with aspartame everyday could increase ones risk of de-veloping a lymphoma or leukemia.

They also found an increasedincidence of malignant brain tu-mors, even though it was not sta-

tistically signicant. This does notmean there is no association to brain tumors, since only the ani-mals exposed to aspartame devel-oped the tumors. With childrenand pregnant women drinking thelargest amount of diet colas, this

puts their children at the greatestrisk of developing one of these hor-rible diseases. Their study foundthat even low doses of aspartamecould cause these malignancies;yet, the higher the dose, the morecancers were seen.

Since aspartame can increaseobesity and may even cause themetabolic syndrome that aects48 million Americans, there is noreason to ever consume this prod-

Two years into his reign, PopeBenedict XVI is nally poised tomake a major mark on AmericanCatholicism with a string of key bishop appointments and impor-tant decisions about the future ofU.S. seminaries and bishops in-volvement in politics.

The Rev. Richard John Neuhaus, editor of the Catholic journal FirstThings, predicted that for the ma- jor posts that lie ahead, Benedictwill appoint bishops who are vi-

I have played each one this week-end. One message really touchedmy heart. Its hard to speak against

brothers and sisters, but to allowourselves to be blind and not knowthat Satan works in our church alsois to court with danger.
