From the Director, Jim Ludema

Nothing says “congratulations” quite like the music of cow-bells. The cowbells were ringing on May 14th as we celebrat-ed the graduation of 11 new Ph.D.s in values-driven leader-ship. You’ll find photos from that day inside this edition of our newsletter.

But that’s not all: there’s a lot to celebrate at the CVDL right now. In this document you’ll read about Mike’s tenure, our first-ever CVDL awards, upcoming events, presentations and publications, and what’s happening in the lives of your fellow CVDL students and alumni. Dig in, catch up, and let us know what we should add to our list for the fall edition of the CVDL Insider.

Eleven Global Executives Join Ranks of CVDL Graduates; More Coming Soon!

Cohort 2 saw 11 graduates cross the finish line on May 14th. Looking tired but joyful during the Champagne Brunch, a new tra-dition, the graduates joined their peers and family members to toast their accomplishments.

Dissertation research areas includ-ed ethical leadership, emotional intelligence, diversity and inclusion, and employee recognition.

“Astonishingly Impressive Record” Earns Tenure for Manning

We are delighted to announce that core faculty member Mike Manning, Ph.D., re-ceived tenure this spring.

Prior to coming to Benedictine Univer-sity, Manning was a tenured Professor of Management at New Mexico State Univer-sity. Benedictine requires that all tenured faculty who come to the university give up their tenure for at least a three-year period to demonstrate their continued productiv-ity and fit with the Benedictine University community and Benedictine values.

“Mike exceeded expectations in the areas of teaching, scholarship, service, and fit with the Benedictine community and values over the last three years,” says Dr. Jim Ludema, director of the CVDL. “He is a remarkable colleague whose track record of scholarship has made a lasting impact on his fields of study and on our students

and his colleagues. He is an exceptional leader, and we are honored to have him on the team.”

Dr. Sandra Gill, Dean of the College of Business, applauded Manning’s “astonish-ingly impressive record” in a celebratory message to the College of Business.

Photo above: Dr. Lee DeRemer, Dr. Lee Murphy, and Dr. Basil Chen (all C1 ‘14) were honored on May 14. Photo by Dr. Anna Amato (C1 ‘14).

Three new awards were presented at the May 14 graduation brunch. Honorees were selected by their peers, or by the faculty and staff of the CVDL. The awards and honorees are: • Distinguished Alumni Award: Present-

ed to a graduate who exemplifies the mission of the CVDL: “to develop them-selves and others, build flourishing companies, and transform business and society.” Dr. Lee DeRemer received this award in recognition of his com-mitment to values-driven leadership through his military, corporate, and non-profit work.

• Outstanding Dissertation Award:

Awarded for each cohort to the author of a dissertation notable for its out-standing quality and contribution to the field. Dr. Basil Chen received this award for his dissertation, “Construct-ing Positive Organization Identity with Virtuous Positive Practices.”

• Outstanding Service Award: Given to a graduate or friend of the CVDL who has helped us advance the mission and work of the Center by serving gener-ously. Dr. Lee Murphy received this award for his ongoing contributions as a volunteer, donor and advisor.

Cohort 2 award winners will be named at the Cohort 3 graduation brunch.

In addition to the alumni awards, the CVDL also intro-duced a new award designed to honor an external schol-ar or practitioner who has exemplified values-driven leadership throughout his or her career.

Two awards were presented on May 14th. Cohort 1 selected Dr. Kim Cameron as their award recipient, in recognition of his research and body of work, which promotes values and culture in order to help all flour-ish. Cameron is the William Russell Kelly Professor of Management and Organizations at the Ross School of Business, University of Michigan and co-founder of the Center for Positive Organizations. Cameron is pictured below, speaking at a Senior Executive Roundtable.

Dr. Anjan Chakravartty was the re-cipient of Cohort 2’s award. He was recognized for his ability to explain complicated philosophical principles in simple terms, and his capacity for integrating values-driven leadership in all he does. Chakravartty is a Professor

of Philosophy at the University of Notre Dame.

Cohort 3 will select their award winner in May 2018.

Deb Hellmuth, former CVDL Associate Director, shares this update: Within the first year of leaving the CVDL, I logged more than 52,600 air miles. But those miles really repre-sented more than travel distance. They represented time spent exploring unfamiliar places; nurturing relationships; being open to new experiences; and making memories. In a nut shell: practicing my values at a micro-level with one-on-one encounters.
