Purpose of a Text
• Personal - - to satisfy a personal interest. Personal letters, fiction,

Welsh is compulsory at GCSE.
WHY WELSH IS A GOOD OPTION.
The public sector in Wales is legally bound to provide services in both Welsh and English and many private companies do so because it’s good for business. This means that Welsh speakers are in demand.
Having a Welsh GCSE qualification will open so many doors and will make you stand out from the crowd when applying for University places or jobs in Wales, in the UK and around the World!
By learning a language you develop so many skills such as social skills, the ability to work in a team, communication skills, problem-solving skills, confidence and open mindedness.

Changes to the course – September 2017
• The main change will be the way WJEC are assessing the work.
• 1 unit will be sat in year 10 all other 3 units must be sat in year 11.
• The language will be the same and many of the topics/sentence structures and the grammar elements you will have studied lower down the school.
Unit 1 – January assessment.
• Pair/Group oracy response to visual material(DVD) to stimulate discussion. • 25% of qualification (50 marks) • The focus is on assessing a natural Welsh discussion between the pair/group.

• Communicate with others based on a statement, question or topic • 25% of qualification (50 marks) • The focus is on assessing a natural Welsh discussion between the pair/group.
Unit 3 – Summer assessment.
• Writing and Reading examination: 1 hour 30 minutes • 25% of qualification (100 marks)
One translation task from English to Welsh / One proof reading task / One writing task
