Putting together the summer issue has been the most fun. Not only do I feel like I might be getting the hang of this

(!), but the summer fashions I found at the local boutiques, from bathing suits to special occasion attire, were drool-worthy. It also happens to be the best time of year to be on the Cape, because we can get out and fully enjoy and connect with the natural beauty that truly flourishes in the summer months.

But here at The Current, we enjoy the Cape, its local businesses, events and cultural activities all year round. One such center of Cape culture is the Cape Cod Maritime Museum. Located right on Hyannis Harbor, it celebrates Cape Cod’s maritime history, which was integral to building our community throughout the years. This is why I chose their beautiful spot as the location for the next fashion show.

It will occur in conjunction with a new local event, Love Local Fest on July 28th. The whole day will be centered around everything local that we know and love, and what makes the Cape such a special place for locals and visitors alike.

Ever hear a fashion buzz word and wonder what the heck the stylists are talking about? Here is your guide to the trends of the season.

Material: SheerThe most demure and subtly-sexy look this season is an outfit that incorpo-rates a piece made of sheer material, which is being used in blouses (all over or just the sleeves) and as overlays and pretty details on skirts and dresses, showing some skin but in a refined manner.

By Amanda ConverseIllustrations by Amy Szep

Hemline: Hi-LoThe hi-lo hemline has stood the test of fashion time, and stuck around for another summer season. The front of the skirt lies higher than the back of the skirt. The height and length contrast can vary from slight to dramatic. Either way, it presents a flirty yet modest look.

Waistline or Neckline: Cut-OutsOn the red carpet, there are a lot of waistline cut outs in a v-shape on the hips or an oval on the abs. This may not be very practical for those who do not attend movie pre-mieres and galas, so for a less daring look, mainstream designers have incorporated peek-a-boo cut-outs at the neckline in tops and dresses.

Print: StripesIt’s true, stripes are never out of style, but this season there are stripe combinations of all colors and on every type of garment. There is a common misperception that horizontal and vertical stripes don't work on different body types, but pay more attention to the fit and fabric as opposed to the pattern and you’ll be able to incorpo-rate this prolific print into all aspects of your wardrobe.

Makeup can make us pretty but there's nothing pretty about some of the

ingredients found in makeup. There's been much discussion regarding harmful ingredients over past decade but very little change has been made, especially among the cosmetic giants that own smaller cosmetic companies than many realize. So, what's a girl to do in order to stay healthy?

As with food, it is up to us to educate ourselves and avoid cosmetic ingredients that are questionable. This is no easy task and can be confusing when ingredient names are so cryptic. What’s more, the very brands that are using these known carcinogens in their products are endorsing cancer awareness efforts at the same time.

Skin is our largest organ and it absorbs everything we put on it, including makeup.

What many people don’t know is that makeup contains ingredients such as lead, formaldehyde, toluene, phthalates, petroleum,

industrial chemicals, all of which are toxic to the body.

If you're looking to clean up your makeup pouch this summer, here are my top six makeup picks:

ARCONA Sunsations Mineral Makeup with SPF $45 These chemical-free, easy to use, light mineral powders even out skin tone and protect against photo damage, leaving you with a naturally flawless complexion and matte finish. The one-piece design with protective sleeve is especially appealing...no more messy compacts and dirty brushes.

function cream eliminates redness, banishes imperfections and protects against photo-damage while providing a smooth and luminous finish. It truly is self-adjusting and reduces the appearance of underlying fine lines in light to medium complexions.

ILIA beauty Multi-Stick $34 All-in-one color for cheeks, lips and eyes made with 100% natural dyes. This emollient combination of Vitamin E, shea butter and

other nourishing organics provide a sheer blush of color wherever you need it. They also blend very nicely with Ilia's illuminator sticks to create a fresh, dewy glow.

ILIA Beauty Tinted Lip Conditioners $24 Part lipstick, part treatment, this combination of organic ingredients soothes and conditions lips. Each irresistible shade carries a sheer pop of color

that increases with intensity when applied liberally. Try mixing more than one color to create your own personalized shade.

ILIA Beauty Mascara $24 This light, natural mascara comes in four different shades that will lengthen, thicken and condition lashes. The flexible, non-clumping wand leaves lashes separated and glossy. My favorite is Shadow of a Doubt... a perfect ash brown hue.

TEN OVER TEN nail polish $18 This up-to-the-minute nail color range out of NYC does not contain dibutyl phthalate, toluene, formaldehyde, resin or camphor. I'm looking forward to trying their newest shade...Hudson which is a bright tangerine.

This should start you on your way to taking stock

of what's in your products and what to avoid going forward. The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics (www.safecosmetics.org) is a great resource for getting to know the different ingredients and risks they bring to our well being. Stay beautiful and safe!

wantwardrobe

Gone are the days of having your measurements taken and a garment

made for you by hand. Much of the clothing we purchase these days is mass produced, by machines, following a general pattern. It is almost impossible for every garment to fit every person, all the time.

That doesn’t mean that you can’t buy the really cute dress that doesn’t fit you exactly right. That is what a professional tailor is for.

Your relationship with your tailor can be just as important as your relationship with your hairdresser. They both have the ability to bring out fabulousness that you might not otherwise see under the extra fabric or split ends.

Of course we all know that tailors can sew buttons, patch jeans and fix ripped seams. What you might not know is that they can make adjustments to any part of a garment from the shoulders to the ankles. They can fix anything baggy, – baggy crotches, baggy butts, baggy (or low) shoulders – anything too long and sometimes too tight or too short.

And if you really need to get creative: pockets can be sewn down, three button jackets can be changed to two, armholes can be made bigger, pleats can be removed, legs of pants widened, linings can be added, and necklines can be reshaped.

They key is to purchase garments that fit the largest part of your body, and have your tailor start from there. If you have any question about whether or not they can fit and fix a garment, keep their number on speed dial and call them from the dressing room!

Summer on Cape Cod would not be complete without a trip to the beach to

gather shells that have washed up on shore. For mother and daughter duo Martha Nunez and Mercy Reed, this is all in a day’s work.

Martha and Mercy refer to themselves as “skilled water women, world travelers and quintessential Cape Codders.” They are also the creative and talented force behind their growing jewelry brand Lucia Moon.

Using their middle names for their moniker, they take the sea’s bounty and literally turn shells into small and large statement pieces of jewelry.

Martha recalls being truly drawn to her first quahog shell on Cape Cod the summer of her 16th year. By the time she was 19 she

was a full time fisherwoman in Chatham, and collecting these “superior” shells as a part of her daily catch, and she began crafting them into beads to create earrings, necklaces and jewelry.

She developed a small following of

form – and know “they are purchasing something unique and amazing.”

Their balance, creativity and diversification has evolved the brand from a high end specialty brand to a more diverse business that will develop business to sustain their brand perhaps into the next generation of Lucia Moon artists.

Lucia Moon is carried in 10 galleries and boutiques across the Cape including The Little Beach Gallery in Hyannis, Weekend in Orleans, Shine in Harwichport and the Frying Pan Gallery in Wellfleet. They also sell for themselves at local festivals such as the Wellfleet Oysterfest and this summer’s Love Local Fest in Hyannis.

her fashion sense and creating a market more accessible to the average shopper.

Regardless of the price point of the jewelry every customer still gets a chance to own a unique piece of art. According to Martha and Mercy this is a surety that will always be a part of the Lucia Moon brand. They want people to connect with the individual pieces – as they did with the shells in their original

collectors over the years and has made some of the largest, most sought after Quahog shell beads in the world.

Although Mercy was always interested in her mother’s jewelry – she was raised on fishing boats and the beaches of Cape Cod, watching her mother collect and carve the quahog shells - she explored the world of science as a Surface Chemist for a wastewater company in Santa Barbara before returning to the Cape eight years ago to apprentice with her mother.

Martha was “honored and thrilled” to have Mercy join her in the now family business, and trained her for five years before selling her first piece of jewelry.

Both of them believe that it is nature that truly designs their jewelry with the shell dictating the shape of each piece. But each

piece is certainly infused with their spirit and their jewelry is a reflection of their lifestyle.

When fishing season ends, Martha and Mercy travel around the world from Jamaica where they have a family home to Sumatra surfing waves and collecting shells, including conch, welk and batu laga, and the extremely

rare abalone, which have all been incorporated into their designs in the last few years.

Almost all of their shells are a by-product of the fishing industry, collected by hand; all of their shells are hand cut,

carved, and smoothed by hand, a messy and sometimes dangerous process.

Martha’s specialty remains creating the beads: “I don’t turn beads half as well” says Mercy. And according to Martha, “Mercy took our earrings to another level” by infusing

Kate and Lizzy Escher

developed their brand

ARTichoke five years ago

as a silk screen company

that captures the artwork of

independent artists on tees,

dresses and accessories.

And in 2012, ARTichoke

launched the first apparel bus

on Cape Cod.

We sat down to talk to them

about their brand, their

personal style, and their

journey to and on their lime

green bus.

STYLE PROFILECAPE CODD

ER CQ: Have you always been interested in fashion?

Kate: We’ve always been into fashion starting from the days we used to dress our Barbie Dolls. Growing up with the luxury of sharing our 2 closets we were always able to pull together and create cool new outfits. We’ve talked about owning a business since we were young girls and although the concepts had changed throughout the years, they have always involved fashion. I was lucky to intern at the Hyman Showroom at the Atlanta Fashion Mart. There I learned wholesale industry and worked during the “market days.” Did we every think we’d be driving around a big lime green fashion bus 5 years ago?? Definitely no; but that’s the fun part of evolving your own business!

CQ: Where did the name ARTichoke come from? And the idea for the apparel bus?

Lizzy: We came up with the name ARTichoke years ago when I was studying horticulture at The UMASS Stockbridge School. Other than the fact that artichokes are delicious and adorable, we really liked how the word has ART in it. We thought it was a

CQ: How has ARTichoke evolved since its inception? And where do you see it going in the future?

Kate: ARTichoke was a big dream for years;

something we would spend hours talking about. We finally got if off the ground during the spring of 2011; we stopped talking and started doing. We would print tee shirts until the wee hours of the night at our parents’ house while jamming to music and drinking a ton of coffee. We started selling them at local craft fairs and then got into wholesaling to a few retail stores.

Lizzy: We did that for about a year and decided that it was too much to handle on top of my schooling and Kate’s full-time job. We had to make a choice: Continue to put ARTichoke on the backburner or give it a real shot… ARTichoke full time. We took the “plunge”. That was a scary decision to have made, especially in this economy. But,

we knew we didn’t want to look back and say “what if?” So now we have a big studio with a large production area, an office painted in a color named “Artichoke Hearts” and our big

good name for us because we want to work with and promote local ARTists but also, we're inspired by nature and things that come from the good green earth.

Kate: We came up with the bus idea as a means to follow our dreams of owning a boutique and exposing our apparel-line without the headaches of owning an actual brick-and-mortar. We want to travel and explore; owning the bus allows us to do that and work all at the same time.

CQ: Where does your inspiration for the graphics come from? Do you design them all or do you have collaborators?

Lizzy: Katy and I are constantly adding to an inspiration board of images, color swatches, textures, etc. From there we narrow down our ideas to a list of deisgns/graphics that will be in the upcoming ARTichoke line. We tend to lean towards nautical and nature-inspired designs. Kate, Kai Potter and I are the three main drawers/designers of ARTichoke. However, some of our pieces are drawn by independent artists. Collaborations are something we do but hope to do more and more of every year.

lime green fashion bus. Making that choice, to run with our passion, wasn’t the easiest choice but we know it will be the most rewarding.

Kate: We want to continue to grow our wholesale accounts and get the brand recognized in more states throughout the US. We also really want to take our bus on a road trip south possibly this winter. Our long-term goal is to create our own patterns of apparel that we can silkscreen. We would love to see our brand explode!

CQ: How would you both describe your personal style?

Kate: Eclectic, casual, chic. I mix things up a lot! I’m a blue jeans kinda girl but will rock with heels, bright accessories and or course, an ARTichoke tee.

Lizzy: That’s tough. These days, most of my time is spent in the studio so my tee-shirt and pants are usually covered in an assortment of ink colors. When I get a break from that, my style cleans-up into casual-chic… with a splash of sheer and tall pumps.
