As many friends of H. 0. Smith as could iind ·seats packed into the Dinkier Room of the Ansley Thursday n ight to pay their tribute to the man who in June steps down from the principalsbip of Boys' High School after 36 years of service.

.Old grads of the P urple and W)lite, educators and civic leaders, and even a strong delegation from rival Tech High were on hand at the ' testimonial dinner to hear Dr. Louie D. Newton and others heap praises on "a Harvard man who made good in the South."

The dinner was given by the Boys' High Alumni and Athletic Association, and was presided over by Ernest Rogers as toastmaster.

Among those who spoke on Mr. Smith's long career in educating Atlanta's youth were Mayor Hartsfield, Dr. Rufus Askew, alumni leader; R. E . Shivers

The latter prefaced his address F by reading a sheaf of telegrams

1 from leaders over the nation congratulating Mi·. Smith on his distinguished record as head oC Boys' High and wishing him well as he of retires in June. Lio

Referring to the honoree jocu- thi larly as "a man who overcame a tht Harvard education to become one d? of the South 's outstanding educators," Dr. Newton declared that sh "he has helped this community to ;r~ keep together in joyous union the concepts ot character and con- S< duct, faith and reason." isl

Dwelling on the theme that c, "the history of any institution is ci the lengthening shadow of a r< man," the speaker asserted that ti "Mr. Smith has instilled the af- a
