A LETTER FROM MR. WATSON

THE RETURN OF A PRE-COVID TRADITION

Dear Academy Family,

Beginning on Monday morning, September 13th, I will once again be offering ourscholars my customary handshake as they arrive in the Piazza during carline.

There are hand sanitizer dispensers at the entrances to both buildings which wealready ask students to utilize as they enter, so, from an epidemiologicalperspective, they will be able to erase all traces of contact instantly. If you or yourchild would prefer not to take up this form of salutation quite yet, just say, “nothank you,” and I will instead give a friendly wave.

Why this, why now? An Atonement education—any true education, really—ismore than the simple transfer of curricula from teacher to student. True education

takes place in the context of a community forged by the pursuit of the true, thegood, and the beautiful. This is especially the case when a student is, as atAtonement, immersed in a liberal arts education, the aim of which can besummed up as “learning to live well.”

Thus, when I greet a scholar with a handshake, eye contact, and a “Goodmorning, Mr./Miss ______,” I am in that moment affirming our shared mission andcelebrating the common life to which it has called us both. Put into words, I amtrying to convey something to the effect of—

You are welcome here; you are expected. I am glad you are here.

We are in this together—we are both here to love God, serve others, and seektruth. I may be further along than you (maybe!), but we are really pursuing thesame project.

I think it’s going to be a good day, don’t you?

Do your best, have fun, be a leader.

Even as I type this I can’t help but think of Mr. Rogers! But you get the idea. Themoments when young people are truly noticed for the right reasons canreverberate for the rest of their lives. At the very least, such moments arecertainly a good way to start our school days.

Let us continue to pray for one another. Our Lady of The Atonement—pray for us.

Your servant,

Matthew David WatsonHead of School

I likeworking with the students and helping them prepare for the more advancedclasses they'll take in math and science, such as Calculus and AP Physics. I alsoenjoy helping them see the intricate nature of God's creation through thediscoveries and complexities of math. What do you most appreciate about teaching at The Atonement Academy?I have been a teacher at The Atonement Academy since 2006, with a few yearsas an administrator as well. I most appreciate the classical and Catholicfoundation upon which we base our curriculum, and especially the opportunity tohelp form the students in their Catholic faith. Cadets, as well as admission into the school’scompetitive engineering program.

His summer internship at an aerospace company wasput on hold due to the pandemic, so in April, when heread about a competition that fosters ideas to beat thespread of COVID-19, he was on board.“At the time, there was a shortage of masks, so our project aimedto sanitize the masks faster,” says John. John andthree other team members took part in an engineeringcompetition called “Aggies Against COVID-19,” anddesigned a product called ‘Sterilight,’which uses far-UVC light, a type of ultraviolet light, to sterilizefrequently-used surfaces.

“Our team made the top ten out of seventy-one teams in the competition,” saysJohn. “We received a $2,500 grant to prototype our design.” John and hisengineering team are currently reviewing the prototype and discussing whether ornot improvements are needed.

John’s team also qualified for the National Science Foundation (NSF), I-CorpsSite Fellows Program. The national program helps participants gain the insightand skills to commercialize a product.

John credits his education at The Atonement, which has helped foster his successin college. “Mechanical engineering is a tough school,” says John. “The fact thatMr. Adian has such a rigorous program at The Atonement has helped me succeedin engineering. I don’t know that I would have, without him.” (Mr. Zachary Adianteaches upper school math and science at The Atonement Academy.)

When asked what he misses most about The Atonement Academy, John saysdaily Mass and the convenience of being able to attend confession. “What helpedme at Atonement was really knowing my faith, inside and out. It can bechallenging at a secular school. I’ve been challenged on my beliefs many times, and others have asked why I believe what I do. Atonement helped me know thewhat, and the why. It’s easy to practice your faith at Atonement because everyonearound you believes as you do. At A&M, you choose to practice your faith.”

John’s advice to students at his alma mater? “Put your all into it. It’s not alwayscool to be a ‘try-hard.’ Teachers at Atonement are there because they want to bethere. If you meet them half-way and put in the work, you’ll get the most out ofyour education.”

This week, two of the classes performedepisodes from the 1940’s thriller seriesEscape, using scripts based on classic shortstories. One class performed the perennialfavorite “The Most Dangerous Game,” andthe other performed the hair-raising tale,“Three Skeleton Keys.”
