TCAL Fine Arts & Academic State Competition

This past Friday and Saturday some of our high school students

participated in the TCAL Fine Arts and Academic State

Competition. With many students in Houston for another

competition, we had a small group of 31 participants who made us

proud and contributed to an overall 3rd-place win for The Atonement

Academy! Students took written tests, gave speeches, sang, played

instruments, and entered artwork. We had almost 3 dozen places in

the top 7, including four 1st-place wins.

CONGRATULATIONS and THANK YOU TO ALL OF OUR

COMPETITORS! Thank you also to their parents, as well as all of

the teacher and parent volunteers!

Advanced Quantitative Reasoning

Students taking Advanced Quantitative Reasoning (AQR)

develop and apply skills necessary for college, careers,

and life. Course content consists primarily of applications

of high school mathematics concepts to prepare students to

become well educated and highly informed 21st century

citizens. Throughout the course, students apply reasoning,

planning, and communication skills to make decisions and

solve problems in applied situations involving numerical

reasoning, probability, statistical analysis, finance,

mathematical selection, and modeling with algebra,

geometry, trigonometry, and discrete mathematics.

American Heritage Girls would like to thank our parish and school for all of your support this school year. We have had a great year and look forward to seeing all of you again in August! We invite all girls to join our troop. We are especially eager to recruit MS and US young ladies who want an opportunity to create new friendships, serve the community and mentor to younger girls. You do not have to be in NJHS or NHS to participate. If you would like to join AHG please be sure to contact Deborah Wendtland via email:

[email protected].

Grade: 7th & 8th

Teacher: Mrs. Melisa Walters Learning Algebra is an important life skill beneficial for upward mobility. Students will develop the understanding they need to resolve more complex problems and functions with this step-by-step course.

The Algebra I class of 7th and 8th grade boys and girls understand that Algebra is the first building block that leads to geometry, trigonometry and calculus which are most likely their next courses of study before they graduate from high school, so this should motivate them to aim for 100% on their math tests. I am so very proud of the Algebra I students!

Kindergarten has been very busy learning all about Texas. We have learned about the Texas Flag, the Alamo, and several Texas symbols, such as the State Seal, Texas Bluebonnets, the pecan tree, and the Mocking Bird. Our focus then went to our great city of San Antonio and all the wonderful things one could do in the city. We visited Sea World, and the children had a wonderful experience learning all about the different animals that live there. Some of us even got splashed by the Orcas. Our Kindergarten class has also learned that San Antonio is having a special celebration this year…It’s Tricentennial. The celebration will make this year’s San Antonio Fiesta extra special. We will close out the unit this week with our Fiesta Shoebox Parade. Our Kindergartener’s have been very busy making their parade floats to show off at our Fiesta Shoebox Parade. We hope to see you all there!!

Featured Teacher of the Week

Mr. Nicholas Mataya

Latin Teacher

Christus Ressurexit!

My name is Nicholas Mataya (pronounced 'mat-E-yay'), your friendly, neighborhood Latin teacher, and this is my first year at The Atonement Academy, and it is also my first year as a Texan. I hold a B.A. from Louisiana State University, an M.A. from Villanova University, and, God-willing, will hold a doctorate from Swansea University in the coming months. I have a wife, Rebecca, and a ten-month old daughter, Teresa, and we are very grateful for the welcome that we have received from the Atonement community and from San Antonio as a whole.

I am a member of the Ukrainian Greco-Catholic Church (a sui iuris Byzantine-Rite Church in communion with Rome), and as someone who lived in Wales for a number of years, I jumped at the chance to work for an Ordinariate institution. One of the joys I have had working at Atonement has been helping my students rediscover their patrimony, including the tradition of Christian greetings for the liturgical seasons.

These past two weekends The Atonement Academy Department of Music has been very busy. Last Friday on April 13th, the Advanced MS Girls’ Choir and the Changed Voice Boy’s Choir competed in the Director’s Choice Music Competition and Festival. Both choirs earned Superior Ratings from their judges, and were awarded Outstanding in Class, earning first place amongst schools similar in size. This past weekend, the Honors Choir traveled to Houston to take part in their Director’s Choice Music Festival and Competition.

The students visited the boardwalk where they ate at the Bubba Gump Shrimp Company on the Houston Boardwalk and then visited NASA at the Johnson Space Center. The competition lasted two days with the Honors Choir being the first ones to sing on Saturday morning on the second day of the competition. The Honors Choir also earned Superior Ratings from the judges, were awarded Outstanding in Class, as well as being awarded Outstanding Overall, competing against multiple high schools who’s students population far exceeds our own. Thank you to all who support our school and music program, and congratulations to all students who participated!
