position or opinion of Richcroft, Inc.

Dear Fellow Richcroft Employees:

As we begin the march towards Spring weather here at Richcroft, our attention is focused on identifying and bringing new people into our residential program. We have gone through a difficult period recently as a number of people in our program have passed away. We are saddened by the loss of Gregory Myers, Holly Englar, and John Sykes in Harford County, and Josephine DeButts in Baltimore County.

Our administrative teams in Baltimore and Harford Counties are working hard on finding the right people to move into the vacancies we currently have. This can be a complicated process that requires extensive planning involving service coordina-tors, day programs, transportation services, families, and adjustments on the part of our staff and the people we currently serve. We are in the process of relocating people we currently serve in Harford and Baltimore County, while at the same time working to fill vacancies. As you can imagine, this can be exhausting and, at times, stressful.

My message today is for you, as direct support professionals, to work as coopera-tively as possible with everyone in order to make these transitions as comfortable as possible for the person entering our program.

It is not easy for a person with a disability to move into a new home. I am confident that you will make every effort to make these pending moves successful. I hope you enjoy this edition of The Croft Chronicle.

Sincerely,

David D. Coughlin

Executive Director

Eddie and his support staff, Jerome, enjoyed the Valentine’s Soul Jam at The Lyric in down-town Baltimore on Friday, February 15th. The Delphonics, The Manhattan’s , Harold Melvin’s

Blue Notes and Bloodstone all performed. Eddie and Jerome were sharp as a tack and en-joyed the show incredibly! Eddie is a huge fan of Motown music and knows where all the

performers were born and raised and when they began performing.

David enjoyed a chilly birthday weekend in Oxon Hill, MD for his birthday. David’s birthday was January 16th. He celebrated at home with his housemates with cake and ice cream, then hit

the road on Friday, January 18th for a fun-filled weekend at MD Live, Dave & Busters and MGM to celebrate. David got to spend time in the hotel swimming pool and eat at lots of great

restaurants as well. His support staff, Toniek Williams, supported him during his trip as she has on many vacations.

Prom Night (Submitted by Joan Appel )

Samantha Patti and Donna Taylor attend-

ed a prom on Friday, February 8th.

The event was held at the Mt Zion Church in Bel Air, Maryland, and was called

“Night to Shine” (sponsored by The Tim Tebow Foundation) for 350 special guests.

Samantha and Donna enjoyed dinner and

dancing from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Here is some more information on this fabulous

event:

(from https://www.timtebowfoundation.org/night-to-shine-2019) — “Through the blessing of our Awesome God and the

help, commitment and passion of hundreds of churches…Night to Shine has

become a worldwide movement celebrating God’s love for people with

special needs and the value of life.

“The Tim Tebow Foundation has a great passion for people with special needs and

in 2014 we launched “Night to Shine.” The vision was simple… work with

churches around the country to provide an unforgettable prom night experience, centered on God’s love for people with

special needs, ages 14 and older.

“In 2015, the first Night to Shine was held in 44 churches representing 26 states and

3 countries. 15,000 volunteers came together to honor the 7,000 guests… and we knew that was a God-sized blessing!

This past year, God did immeasurably

more than we could have asked or imagined, as 537 churches, from 33

different denominations in 49 states and 16 countries came together with 150,000 volunteers to serve and celebrate 90,000

honored guests with special needs!”

Wellness 101 (by Char in HR)

EAT healthy and stay ACTIVE! Limit your portion sizes and foods that are high in fat, salt, & sugar. Practice be-

ing active for at least 3 hours per week.

Get exams and screenings! Communicate and initiate conversations with your healthcare providers. It’s all

about YOU!

Manage stress! Give yourself a break if you feel stressed out, overwhelmed or out of control. Ways to manage

stress include: getting plenty of rest, seeking professional support and connecting socially.

Be smoke free! Avoid smoking and secondhand smoke.

Wash your hands often with soap and use clean running water for at least 20 seconds. Make sure you wash your

hands after using the restroom, before eating or handling food, whenever you arrive home after being in public

places and even more if someone you live or work with is sick.

New Year, New You…-RIGHT? (by Char in HR)

The New Year presents an opportunity to take a fresh look at issues you’ve been wrestling with and a chance to tackle

them again. Are you still on the path of tackling these issues and achieving your goals?

Here are a few suggestions:

Get a checkup-A yearly physical exam from your doctor is the cornerstone of good health. Even if you’re feeling

fine, silent problems like high cholesterol and high blood pressure could reduce the length and quality of your

life.

Exercise-This is the number one resolution in the New Year, for most. It all comes down to diet and exercise. Try

small, simple changes, like portion control and walking.

Money Matters-Take a look at your financial health. Check on the amount of life and property insurance you have

to protect yourself and your family. Check on your investments to ensure they align with your short/long term

financial goals. Take a look at your credit report/score to reduce high interest debt.

Estate Planning-Get your legal affairs in order and make out a will.

Help Others- There is no shortage on things you can do to help make the world a better place, perhaps by volun-

teering in your community or at your child’s school.

JUST LOVE Slow down, strategize and ENJOY LIFE!

How are those New Year’s Resolutions coming along? Resolutions, turn over a new leaf, get a new lease on life...

whatever you want to call it. Ask yourself, am I …..

arriving to work 5 minutes before the beginning of my shift, or making someone wait?

making someone smile, or making them miserable?

doing my tasks and then sitting down, or waiting until the end of my shift and forgetting something?

interacting with my clients, or sitting in another room?

checking that they are groomed properly, or do they look like a "homeless person?

part of the problem , or part of the solution?

doing my best (even if it is sweeping the floor) , or am I going through the motions?

treating others as I would like to be treated?

leaving things undone, or am I leaving things as if no one was even there?

doing my best to make my house and clients the best that they can be?

fair with my co-workers, or am I making their shift more difficult?

working for others when they need a day off, as I would want them to work for me?

WORKING FOR MY PAY CHECK, OR DO I WORK FOR THE COMPANY?

Ask yourself, am I giving it my best? Or, “What would Jesus do?” Whatever you choose. How are those resolutions coming along? If

the old ones aren't working , try the ones listed above. (submitted by Debra Tily )

From Charissa, Dawn and Lisa:

April is right around the corner, so that means it is almost time to complete your Bloodborne Pathogen, HIPAA and Distracted Driver

Trainings for 2019. Just like last year, all three training books will be distributed to the houses to be completed by each staff member. All book-lets must be completed between April 1st and April 30th. The “ in April

Only” completion dates are an important part of the licensing application. So, please do not complete them earlier than April. All trainings must be

completed and turned into the office by April 30, 2019.

Our Supports staff and Floaters will also be required to complete these trainings. Your supervisors will make sure you receive the booklets. There will be a page at the back of each booklet with questions to answer. Please answer the questions and sign and date the page. Also, please print your

name at the top of each page that you complete. Sometimes it is difficult to read the signatures. A collection envelope will be available in each house

for you to place the completed forms in.

Reminders will be sent to you through Carematic for these trainings. If you are unable to open your Carematic messages, please call Lisa or

Charissa at the Richcroft office and let them know. It is very important to be able to access Carematic to read messages, complete incident reports, and complete daily diary logs. The best way to reach any of the training

department staff ( Lisa Ackerman, Charissa Pratta or Dawn Tridone) is via Carematic or by email:

FAQ about MANDT As many of you know we have been having Mandt Training Classes at Richcroft since last July. There are an average of 6 classes per

month. To date there have been over 200 Richcroft employees trained in Mandt. Our goal is to have all of the staff who work in the

houses trained by July 1, 2019. This summer we will start training the staff in Supports. Our first Mandt Refresher classes will also start

this summer. People have many questions about Mandt. Hopefully some of your questions will be answered in one or more of these

answers to the most “Frequently Asked Questions.”

Is Mandt The Same As BPS?

No, it is not exactly the same as BPS. BPS was taught and used in Maryland only. BPS stands for Behavior Principles and Strategies.

Both programs address how to manage behaviors of individuals. However, they are very different approaches. The Mandt system also

addresses behavior management, however, Mandt emphasizes the support of the whole person not just managing their behaviors.

What Does Mandt Stand For?

Mandt is named after the person who developed this relationship – based approach to dealing with behaviors. It is new to Maryland

but it is not a new program. David Mandt created it in 1975. It is taught and used in many states in the US and many countries through-

out the world.

When Do I Need To Take Mandt?

We are notifying people to sign up for Mandt based on their BPS Refresher expiration date. You will receive a message from me ( Dawn

Tridone) a month before your expiration date. We are no longer teaching BPS or BPS Refresher classes at Richcroft. Though some

agencies still teach BPS, the last date Richcroft will accept BPS Training Certificates is July 1, 2019.

How Long Is Mandt Training?

Mandt is a 2 day class from 9 am to 5 pm. Classes are held throughout each month, Mondays - Fridays. There are no weekend training

days for Mandt. Classes are held in the Richcroft Training Room. You can choose two days in a row for training or spread them out and

take your Day One at the beginning of the month and your Day Two at the end of the month. Mandt does require that both days be tak-

en in the same month.

What Is Taught In Mandt?

Relationships are the foundation of MANDT. Day One covers chapters 1-3 of the Mandt Resource Guide. Everyone is given their own

book to keep on Day One. This book is used on Day Two and we are asking you to keep it in a safe place for your Refresher Class one

year after you take Days One and Two. Chapters 1-3 focus on the principles of the Mandt and focuses on the importance of relation-

ships, communication and conflict resolution in three areas:

Employer and employee relationships

Caregiver and client relationships

Relationships between our employees as caregivers in our homes.

Day Two covers Chapters 7-9. You learn the physical maneuvers for the Mandt program. They are very different from the BPS maneu-

vers.

Are There Tests Given In The Mandt Classes?

Yes, there is a test at the end of Day One and there are three smaller tests throughout Day Two. Everyone in the class completes a study

guide for each test and we go over all of the correct answers together.

Are There Mandt Refresher Classes?

Yes, your Mandt certification will need to be renewed after one year. The refresher classes will be one day trainings. You will need to

save your book and bring it back to the refresher class a year later. Chapters 4-6, which deal with trauma informed care will be part of

the refresher classes.

Hopefully these FAQ’s answered some of the things you have been wondering about for Mandt Training. Charissa and I attended 4 day

training sessions to teach Mandt. The Mandt system teaches a positive approach to forming relationships with both our individuals and

our co-workers. It is the hope that through the strengthening of these relationships we can provide the best care possible.

While the classes are long and filled with a lot of information, Mandt is a valuable resource. The only downside to Mandt is that they

sometimes assume higher staffing ratios than most agencies have in their houses. However, the approaches that are taught are healthy

and focus on positive relationship building. Hopefully everyone can take away something from the classes that they can use at work and

in their personal lives.

If you have any questions about Mandt, please feel free to send Lisa, Charissa or Dawn a Carematic message. We look forward to seeing you in class!

Josephine Dame de Butts

Our beautiful Josephine departed this life on Saturday, February 16, 2019 at her home on Breezewick Circle. All of her support staff, administrators, friends and family loved her dearly and regularly visited with Jody at her home. She was on hospice for a few

weeks after being diagnosed with leukemia. Her life was so full, and she was content in her beautiful room, surrounded by her crystal figurines, pictures of her travels around the world and British Royalty figurines. Jody was the Queen of her castle, and everyone around her did exactly as she said! She was so loving, in spite of her sometimes harsh critiques of others. Once she said she loved you, it was the best feeling in the world!

The team at Breezewick Circle, formerly Southerly Road, have done an awesome job of

supporting Jody over the past 6 years. Rest in Peace, Jody!
