Oftentimes, buying a home opens up a bottom-less pit of opportunities for projects and im-provements. While some homeowners engage in different repairs and fix-ups out of necessi-ty, many others like to freshen-up their spaces out of personal preference instead of need. But even the most well-intentioned projects can be waylaid if budgets are tight.
What many homeowners may not realize is that there are many ways to make updates and changes to a home that do not require a major overhaul or a large price tag. The following are seven projects that won’t break the bank.
Move around furniture. You may be able to 1. change the look of a room without spending any money. Interior designers know how to arrange furniture for maximum appeal, but the average homeowner can do it, too. Find a focal point in the room and angle the fur-niture toward it. Don’t make the focal point the television, however. Try changing the placement of chairs and sofas. Simply mov-ing a curio cabinet from one corner to an-other may also make a difference.Add lighting. Lighting at different levels in 2. the room can create a vibrant impact. Many homeowners mistakenly put in a couple
of table lamps and think that will be ad-equate. However, properly illuminating a room means varying the lighting to create different moods at different times. Plus, more light can make a room feel more wel-coming.Add new pillows or drapes. Changing a few 3. aspects of a room can give it an entirely new look. If you want to add a splash of color but don’t know what to do, think about incor-porating some new throw pillows or change the curtains. An accessory here and there in a bright color also can incorporate a new hue without it being overwhelming.Change knobs or small accents. Give a room 4. a new look by focusing on the small details. Switch out cabinet knobs for something up-dated and modern. Take inventory of wall outlets and light switches and think about selecting new ones that coordinate with your home decor.Use plants. Empty corners or spots you’re 5. not certain how to fill may benefit from a plant. Plants are inexpensive ways to add instant color and visual appeal to a room. Plus, having live plants can help improve indoor air by filtering out contaminants. A home with plants also feels more cozy.Hang new wall art. It may be time to look 6.
at your photos and artwork and make a few adjustments. Finding new prints to hang could instantly change a room’s ambi-ence. And you needn’t spend a lot of money on professional pho-tography, either. Grab your camera and take a few close-up shots of flowers or take in a landscape scenery. Many of today’s home printers can produce professional-quality prints in minutes.
Try a new coat 7. of paint. After you’ve exhausted other av-enues, choosing a new paint color may be the new look you de-sire. Painting is one of the least expensive yet most dramatic methods of chang-ing a home’s interior. With dozens of hues to choose from, and new apps that enable you to take snapshots of things in nature or in your life and match them up to a paint col-or, you will have scores of opportunities to ex-plore fresh new colors for your home. When you get inspired to make improve-ments to the home but fear how much it may take out of your wallet, consider inexpensive tricks that can induce a big “wow” factor.

The Coweta Shopper is a popular and effective advertising guide mailed weekly to 16,400+ homes and busi-nesses throughout Coweta county. We have successfully served the Coweta county area for over twenty years with our consumer-oriented guide consist-ing of a wide variety of retail and ser-vice advertisers, along with classified advertisements.

The Coweta Shopper reserves the right to accept or reject any advertising as we feel is in the best interest of our publication.
I don’t know about you, but it seems to me that this past year has galloped by like a thoroughbred race
horse. But, I suppose we say that every year, don’t we? Here at the Coweta Shopper’s “World Headquarters” (our only office at this time), we are in the process of de-ciding on a few changes which will, hopefully, make our publication more interesting and informative, as well as a better value for our advertisers. For 2013,we’ll be doing more articles about local business owners as well as em-ployee spotlights, gardening and decorating. And local guest contributors can inform us about their specialty in services such as health care, insurance, Social Security,
Medicare and taxes. It would be easy to just download things from the internet, but we think our readers enjoy knowing more about the folks right here in Cowe-ta County. The Armchair Gardener will continue to provide information about growing plants and arrang-ing flowers, and Nan Johnston will share some interesting information about interior design and decorat-ing. Sharpsburg’s Bob Spruck has written some popular What’s in Your Garage articles in the past and knows his stuff about classic cars, vintage racing and car maintenance. Bob is a free lance writer for a couple of national magazines and has agreed to do some writing for us again this year.
But all of this, along with selling and designing advertisements, takes a lot of work, talent and coordination. Rusty Kuehl, who started with the company shortly after it’s founding in 1989, does a tremendous job with advertising sales. His clients re-ally like him, some having worked with him for over twenty years. Barbara Kirkman started selling ads for us almost two years ago. She is a hard worker, knows the ad business and has developed a loyal following of a good many regular custom-ers. Our money, when we have some, is tended to by Robin McLaughlin, who has a background in banking. She’s not only great at what she does, but is one of the most pleasant people I have ever worked with. But the main “Worker Bee” around our office is Ruth Harris Doyal. She has been with The Shopper since 1990 and does the ad layout and design, placement within the paper, and gathers details about up coming events for our readers. Ruth is the center of gravity around here, turn-ing everything we do into a publication every week without fail. We couldn’t do it without her.
Our goal at The Coweta Shopper is to “Connect the citizens of our community with the products and services available here, and to do so in a positive, informative and interesting way”. One way you can help is to give us your comments about what you would like to see in future publications. I hope you will send me an email with your thoughts so we can serve you better. I’m sitting right here in front of my com-puter waiting to hear from you.

Exterior Paint ColorsThe exterior walls are one of the most important features of any home because it’s the first thing that someone sees when they visit or pass by your house. Many home owners are remodeling their homes with a fresh coat of paint, but often have difficulty deciding on a color or a combination of colors to use. Es-pecially if there is a possibility that you may need to sell the house in the near future.
Before running to the paint store to choose a color consider the style of your home and what is traditionally being used on that style. Look for similar homes and take inspiration from them to help with the decision. Also, consider the other homes in your neighborhood. It’s advisable to choose colors that are compatible with them. If you live in a subdivision you may need to check with your Home Owners Association (HOA) to see if there are restrictions & covenants concerning exterior paint choic-es.
Choosing colors that coordinate with the fixed assets of the home that can’t be changed such as the roof, siding material such as brick, stone, etc. is important as well.
Decide on the main house color first (if it’s to be painted). Experts advise to try a few different shades of the color that you want on a small portion of the house to see how it looks. It’s difficult to decide from a small chip on a paint strip and most paint brands sell small sample sizes for this purpose. Af-ter your color choice has been final-
ized, then choose the trim and accent colors.
Some of the most popular exterior colors through-out America are:
#1 White/ Off-White - Always a classic choice.
#2 Tan - Can be Beige or Taupe
#3 Gray - Another classic choice
#4 Yellow - Soft Corn Silk, Classical Yellow or
a Dusty Yellow are good choices.
#5 Blue - Think bleached denim
Most paint companies have an exterior paint guide that you can use to help decide on a color scheme. Then the only thing to decide after this is are you going to DIY (do it yourself) or hire a contractor. I know which way I’d go!

The year 2012 marked the 50th anniversary of Newnan’s Williams Insurance Agency. In 1962, company founder C.J. Williams relocated to Newnan to sell life insurance through Life and Casualty. By 1972, the rented office space above Lee-King Pharmacy became too small, and Mr. Williams relocated to Temple Ave. where it remains today.
The insurance business has always been a family affair in the Williams clan. Two of the sons, Tim Williams, and the late Terry Williams, joined their dad to help make this business venture even more successful. In 1980, Robin’s mother, Linda Dukes, married C.J. Williams and became an integral part of the business until her retirement. Robin McGuffey joined the agency in 1986 and began purchasing ownership in the busi-ness in 2003. “My step father taught me everything he knew about the insurance business”, say’s Robin, “but he continued to be the ‘man in charge’”. Mr. C.J. was a major input into the workings or the agency until his death in 2011.
These days, Robin McGuffey is the “woman in charge” at Williams Insurance, being both pleasant and knowledge-able. “Our agency offers all lines of insurance including auto, home, and motorcycles, as well as tenant occupied and va-cant property, enabling us to insure through multiple compa-nies, giving you the best value available.” Williams Insurance represents Travelers, Guideone, Progressive, Universal Prop-erty and Casualty, as well as others.
Robin and Lee McGuffey, along with their two children Camille and Will Wilbanks were born and raised in Coweta County. “We’re proud to be a part of Coweta County’s busi-ness community, helping to serve our clients insurance needs for over 50 years.”

McGuffey There are more than 3 million cases of skin cancer in the United States each year. The incidence has increased at such a fast pace that now, over half of
all new cancers are skin cancers. The most common type is basal cell carcinoma, which accounts for 80% of all cases of skin cancer. Squamous cell carcinoma is the next most frequent form and represents about 16% of the total. Malignant melanoma is the third most common type of skin cancer, accounting for about 4% of all skin cancers. Almost all cases of skin cancer are related to excessive exposure to ultraviolet light (e.g., sunlight) and are more prevalent in fair-skinned individuals. Advancing age is a risk factor for skin cancer, but all types of skin cancer can occur at almost any age. Basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma are not usually life-threatening and are most commonly found in sun-exposed areas. They usually appear as a flesh-colored or reddish bump or patch that may bleed spontaneously. They can be mistaken for a sore that won’t heal or one that heals over for a short time and then turns into a sore again. Melanoma is a much more serious type of skin cancer because of its potential for aggressive growth and metastasis (spread to other bodily sites). Melanoma usually looks like a mole that meets one or more of the “ABCD” criteria: A-Asymmetry, having a different shape on one half as compared to the other half; B-Border irregularity, such as a jagged border; C-Color variations, including multiple colors or especially the color black; D-Diameter, greater than 6 mm. Melanoma can occur anywhere on the skin surface, not just on sun-exposed areas. In order to reduce the chances of developing a skin cancer, it is important to minimize direct exposure to ultraviolet light (both sunlight and tanning beds) as much as possible. Helpful measures include wearing protective clothing and a wide-brimmed hat as well as avoiding the outdoors during the hours of 10 AM and 4 PM when the sun’s intensity is the highest. A sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30 should be liberally applied to all exposed skin every morning and reapplied regularly during periods of direct exposure.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson
• Too many dishes and cups and not enough cabinet space? Try rotating your serving pieces as you would a wardrobe. Use different patterns for different seasons.
• “When you need to quickly clean the microwave and there is stuck-on food, thoroughly saturate a washcloth or dishrag with water and micro-wave it for about a minute. Leave it in the microwave for another minute, and then use it to wipe away the food. It comes off like magic! (Always check the cloth to make sure it is not too hot to handle first.)” -- N.C., via e-mail
• “Here’s a great discovery our family made after a recent snowstorm. It’s fun to paint on snow. Use wide paintbrushes and watercolors. Mist the snow with a water bottle to create a semi-hard surface, then paint away. We used sticks and leaves to create a border and took photos of our ‘creations.’ This way we have a memory of it after it melts away.” -- R.O. in Ohio
• “I save the plastic containers that margarine comes in. Then buy fresh fruit, cut it up and store it in the containers in individual servings. I usu-ally do a few days’ worth at a time, so if my containers are still in the fridge, I know I haven’t been eating enough fruit.” -- E.C. in California
• “If I am going to fry up burger patties for hamburger night, I always do about a dozen extra. They freeze well and make an easy, quick supper on nights I don’t feel like cooking.” -- F.F. in Missouri
• “I get a lot of magazines and always felt bad about getting rid of them. Now I take them to my local nursing-home facility. The residents appreciate them, and I have found that I enjoy the visit when I drop them off.” -- P.C. in Okla-homa

“Identity Crisis”
Some of our readers have been asking the question, “Who is the Arm-chair Gardener?” As the grandmother of five older grandchildren, I am truly the Armchair Gardener. It’s been fun writing articles in the Shopper for the past two and a half years. I’ve enjoyed sharing tips, in-formation, and suggestions with our readers. Some may not be able to take classes or attend meetings. The Shopper is delivered, free of charge, to every mailing address in the county.
My grandmother, who was a wonderful grower, taught me to love plants and flow-ers. My father was a great gardener! Arrang-ing flowers has been an interest since being exposed to my mother’s “Pause for Living” magazines (Coca~Cola Company) as a teen-ager. Fifty years later, I still have those maga-zines.
I’ve attended many programs, classes and workshops over the past thirty-five years. Membership in two garden clubs led to Flow-er Show Schools and Flower Show Judges Symposiums. I’m an accredited Master Flow-er Show Judge Emeritus.
In recent years, health issues have caused me to discontinue much of my gardening and arranging activi-ties. My wonderful and patient hus-band had six raised garden beds built for flowers and patio contain-ers provide herbs. The Newnan Util-ities has a great compost for flowers and shrubs. It’s still a work in prog-ress. I continue to read, study, and attend programs and shows. It’s an enjoyable challenge keeping up with changing styles and rules of design and horticulture.
Thank you to all our readers for allowing me into your homes.
Happy New Year to all!

ROAD TO RECOVERYVolunteer Drivers Needed
If you are looking for a great way to donate some of your time, consider becoming a volun-teer driver for The American Cancer Society’s Road to Recovery Program. This volunteer-based program provides free transportation to cancer patients to and from their treatment lo-cations. You can make a real difference in the life of someone who needs regular cancer treat-ments. It is hard enough to have cancer without having to worry about how you will get to your appointments.
Being a Road to Re-covery volunteer is so easy. And the rewards are great. You can choose how often and what day of the week you would like to drive, and what distance you would be willing to travel. Most patients’ appointments are lo-cal in Coweta County. The training is free. Requirements include a good driving record, a valid driver’s license, auto insurance, and a vehicle that is in good working condition.
Join this meaningful program and make someone’s life a little easier. You might find it makes a difference in your own life as well. For more info on be-coming a volunteer driver, contact Road to Recovery volun-teer coordinator, Em-ily Stastny at 770-378-1616 or email her at [email protected].

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTHBy Paul G. Donohue, M.D.
Burning Throat Pain Could Signal Angina
DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I read your column all the time, and I was wondering if anyone has ever written to ask a question about burning in the throat. I was a smoker for years. It’s been five months since I have had a cigarette. This throat burning occurs when I walk or try to exercise or even carry laundry. I would like to know what it means. It feels like hot ice in my throat. -- F.R.
ANSWER: I don’t want to alarm you, but I will breathe more easily if you see a doctor very soon. What you describe could be a sign of an-gina, pain caused by the narrowing of a heart artery or arteries.
More often, people describe angina as chest tightness or discomfort that occurs when they’re active, as in walking, exercising or car-rying laundry, and then lets up when they stop. The variations on angina pain are many. It can be felt as jaw pain, shoulder and arm pain (on the left more often than the right) or neck pain. People use words like “squeezing,” “crushing” or “suffocating.” Some say it feels like throat tightness. Burning throat pain could be anoth-er variant of angina.
Do see a doctor quickly. Stop doing things that bring on this pain until you do.
The booklet on angina and coronary artery dis-ease explains this common malady and how it’s treated. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 101W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the re-cipient’s printed name and address. Please al-low four weeks for delivery
***
DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My daughter is on Ef-fexor for depression. She’s been on it for six months, and actually is doing quite well. She’s able to handle her job and take care of her fam-ily. Does she take this medicine for life? I worry about addiction and what it might be doing to her brain. -- N.M.
ANSWER: Antidepressants are not addicting. They don’t damage the brain. What they do is restore normal brain chemistry. An imbalance in brain messenger chemicals is believed to lead to depression.
Your daughter’s doctor will tell her when she can stop taking the medicine. If a person re-lapses into another depression after stopping medicine, then she should take antidepressants for a more prolonged period, possibly for life.
***
DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I think my husband is an alcoholic. He’s not abusive, but his consump-tion of alcohol is more than a six-pack of beer a day, and sometimes whiskey. He usually falls asleep in a chair. My sister tells me the cage test can diagnose alcoholism. What is it, and where can he get it done? He won’t talk about these things to me. -- C.L.
ANSWER: It’s not a lab test. It’s four questions.
They are: 1) Have you ever felt the need to Cut down on your drinking? 2) Are you Annoyed when people criticize your drinking? 3) Do you ever feel Guilty about your drinking? 4) Have you ever taken a drink first thing in the morn-ing as an Eye-opener?
Two “yes” answers indicate alcoholism. It’s a simple but reliable test.

When shopping for a new vehicle, some drivers know exactly which model of car they want to buy, while others are not so sure. Though price and features often carry the most weight when making a decision, a test drive can narrow down the prospects as well.
It is easy to become awestruck by the look of a new car, and even easier to fall into the eager hands of a salesperson. It can be con-fusing when comparing the dozens of statis-tics and numbers associated with a car -- from price to horsepower to gas usage ratios. One of the best ways to judge a car is to take it out for a test drive.
There are many things that a test drive can tell you about a car or truck. A test drive shouldn’t be a quick jaunt around the block. It should include a thorough examination of the vehicle, and the drive should be long enough for you to get a feel for the vehicle.
It is important to take your time on a test drive and not feel rushed. There are also many other tips that can help you find the right buy.
Pick a time when you feel focused. Doing a test drive on your lunch • hour or right before you’re expected at a meeting or carpool is not the ideal time to make an assessment of the vehicle. You certainly may feel rushed and distracted by the other tasks you have to accom-plish. Rather, pick a time when you are well rested and well fed and able to concentrate on the job at hand.Avoid distractions. Sometimes schedules conflict, and you may have • to bring other people, including children, along on the test drive. However, when possible, only include those people who will be driv-ing the vehicle in the test drive. This way you will be able to focus solely on the car and not worry about what the other passengers are doing as well. It is also perfectly acceptable to ask the salesperson to be quiet during the test drive and reserve explaining the features and attributes for before or after the drive. This way you can focus on the driving experience.Research the vehicle. It helps to go into a test drive already knowing • the majority of the specifications on the vehicle and what the car or truck is capable of doing. This way you’ll be able to tell if the sales information you are receiving is accurate or embellished.Try out different terrains. Most test drives consist of a short jaunt to • and from the dealership. Salespeople also may recommend certain routes, but these could be tailored to get the best response out of the car. But if you’re familiar with the area take a test drive on your terms. Try different road surfaces and speeds. Also be sure to make turns to gauge the turning radius. This can be as simple as making some turns in a parking lot.Change lanes. Take the opportunity to change lanes so you can judge • the visibility of the vehicle.Adjust the seating. This will help you determine the comfort level of • the vehicle and if it will fit your frame. You don’t want the car to be uncomfortable to drive.
Test the radio and the climate control. See •how the car functions, including whether it takes a long or short time to reach a com-fortable temperature.Have a passenger ride in the back. If you •won’t be distracted by it, have a friend or family member ride along and pay attention to the things you might be missing while fo-cusing on the road. These may include road noise, suspension and the general comfort of the vehicle.
A test drive is an important component of buying a car. It can often make or break a sale, so be sure to include it on your must-do list.
* * * A test drive can tell potential car buyers a lot about a vehicle. Conduct a test drive when you can devote your undivided attention to the task.

Newnan Coweta Humane Society announces Pet Food Pantry
The Newnan-Coweta Humane Society is pleased to announce another new program to assist needy pet parents in Coweta County. During these difficult economic times, some families are facing the choice between feeding themselves and taking care of loved ones. This choice is made by parents of low-income families every day and many times involves the family pet. “Local shelters and animal rescues are experiencing an in-crease in owner relinquishments of family pets due to the family’s inabil-ity to afford pet food and pet care for their beloved four-legged family members” reports LouAnn Jones, President, Newnan Coweta Humane Society. Giving up a family pet to make sure it is has food and is healthy is a very traumatic experience for both the humans AND the animal. Fortunately, many families will no longer be required to make the choice to feed themselves or their pets. The Newnan Coweta Pet Food Pantry will provide temporary food assistance to pet owners who are currently unable to afford food for their pets and may be forced to give up their pets without food assistance.
The NCHS Pet Food Pantry will be an ongoing program and monthly distributions will occur on the 1st Saturday of each month. Qualified program recipients can receive a one month supply for up to three pets. All pets must be spayed/neutered and up to date on Rabies. If not fixed or current on Rabies, NCHS can provide assistance at no cost to quali-fied Coweta residents. The next scheduled food distribution will be on Saturday, January 5, 2013 at the HELP Spay Neuter Clinic, 12 The Cres-cent, Newnan, GA from 9am-12noon. Residents needing assistance with feeding their pets will need to complete an application for the program. Residents must bring a picture ID, and proof of income in order to quali-fy for assistance. Forms can be picked up in advance at the HELP Clinic, or by emailing NCHS at [email protected].
NCHS will gladly accept donations of Dog or Puppy Food (dry or canned), Cat or Kitten Food (dry or canned), Stainless Steel Bowls (please no plastic or ceramic), Kitty Litter, Nylon adjustable dog collars and leash-es at the following locations: NCHS Adoption Events (to a NCHS Volun-teer) at Newnan PetSmart on Sundays from 12:30 to 3:30; All-Star Mini Storage, 8 Newnan South Industrial (off Hwy 29 South); H.E.L.P. Spay Neuter Clinic, 12 The Crescent (in Avery Park off Hwy 29 North).
For information on receiving pet food assistance, please email our Pet Food Pan-try Director, Holly Lewis at [email protected] or call the Pet Food Pantry Voicemail (Holly Lewis) at 678-590-1430.

Happy Tails Pet Sa-lon has a new manager and groomer. Shelly Daws and her family have always been animal people and she especially loves dogs. In the spring of 2008, Shelly took grooming classes from Happy Tail’s original owner, Judy Hortman and has worked for Petco in Peachtree City. “Some dogs have anxiety attacks when being groomed”, says Shelly. “I like to work with those spe-cial needs dogs to make their visit a pleasant one”. Although extra services are available, Happy Tails provides everything that should be included for a par-ticular breed without extra charges. “Everything your dog needs to walk out of the salon looking and feeling great comes in our basic package”.
Shelly Daws is a lifelong resident of the Coweta County area. She and her husband Chainey, have two children Sydney and Ethan. And let’s not forgot the family’s two Shih Tzu’s, Princess and Velvet. You can reach Happy Tails Pet Salon by calling 678-416-3835.
