The Coweta Shopper reserves the right to accept or reject any advertising as we feel is in the best interest of our publication.

When the Mansour brothers, Ellis and Charlie, founded Brothers Ltd. men’s wear in downtown Newnan in the mid 1960’s , it quickly became a

popular place to shop. They carried good quality, fashion-able clothing and we didn’t have to drive to Atlanta to get it. Many of us are still customers, as my generation sort of “grew up” with the store.

Having been raised in a family of merchants, they knew how to run a business, and always provided personal, friend-

ly service. From my first visit in the 60’s, and continuing through last week, I have always been greeted by name and with a smile. The Mansour family really know how to make each person feel like their most important customer, and that has made us all want to keep coming back.

Over the years I have collected fond memories of Brothers. When trying on pants, Ellis and Charlie referred to me as “The Seatless Wonder”. (It must have been true – my mother used to say the back of my pants looked like a family had just moved out!) While in the store many years ago, Charlie suggested I consider purchasing a hat I was admiring. When I told him I thought it would look laughable on me, he said, “that hat will look great on you – no one will laugh”. When I tried it on, he was the first one to break out laughing! Needless to say, I didn’t buy the hat. It was always interesting when Ellis would wait on me. He is a great conversationalist and would usually spend time with me discussing any matter of interest. Al-though I was nobody from nowhere, it made me feel like he cared – and he did. Connie, knowing how much I like bow ties, has tried several times to teach me to tie one. She made it look easy, but when I tried it at home, I failed miserably! Thanks for trying, Connie, but I’ll continue wearing the pre-tied ones from Brothers. And it’s not just my fond memories, but of many other men and women who have enjoyed being served by the Mansour family over the years.

The Bible states, “there is a season for everything”, and in the next few weeks, after almost a half century in business, Brothers Ltd. will close. Younger brother, Charlie, passed away last year and has been very much missed by all who knew him. Ellis has decided this is now the time to take a much deserved retirement and we wish him well. I believe a family is not necessarily defined by a business, rather the success of the business is built on the character of the family. The store will soon be gone, but the Mansours will continue to be a vital part of Newnan, committed to their family, their community and their church.

As always, I invite your comments and suggestions to help

us make The Coweta Shopper an interesting and effec-

tive advertising medium. 770-254-1421, fax 770-254-8283, or e-mail [email protected]

Legal Briefs: Bill Stemberger

Throughout the years I have been asked what is the best way to find the right lawyer. This week’s article will briefly discuss some of the ways to find an attorney than can assist you.

As with any business, word of mouth is the best advertising. A personal recommendation from a family member or friend is a great place to start. Also seek out people who had similar attorney needs. It helps to find out who has done well for other people.

Another important thing to think about when picking an attorney is his or her specialty. Make sure you hire the lawyer you need. In other words, if you need a criminal defense lawyer don’t hire an estate lawyer even if it’s an old family friend (but they can be valuable in referring you to the right lawyer).

The Internet is also a valuable resource and can provide you helpful in-formation about the firms and attorneys in your area. Most attorney’s web sites discuss their area of practice, case results, and client testimonials. A few attorney’s web sites, including my firm, have video which lets you see and hear from the attorneys you are considering. Also, some web sites also have links that might provide you additional information for the type of answers you are seeking.

The phone book, while still a resource for phone numbers, does not provide as much depth as is found online. The phone book will also pro-vide you with attorney practice areas.

Once you’ve decided to meet with an attorney, ask if they have a free consultation. If you are prepared to meet with an attorney, have a clear idea of the questions you need to ask. Also, the attorney can advise you about the type of fee associated with your case. Fees differ for different types of legal matters. For example, a criminal case might have a fixed fee, a business problem might have an hourly fee with a retainer, and most personal injury cases would be on a contingency fee where a portion of the settlement or verdict, if received, would go to the attorney.

The weather is warming up and I keep hearing that real estate sales are picking up. Making a great first impression is imperative in having a faster sale for top dollar. Below are my top 10 exterior selling tips to help anyone,

whether their house is on the market or not.

❶ Walk outside and enter through your front

door. Most home owners don’t use their front entrance on a regular basis, they use their

garage entrance, so it’s easy to forget about the

appearance of the front of the house.

❷Sweep down any cobwebs, dust, pollen, etc.

❸Check your door bell button.

You wouldn’t believe how many homes I see

that have a broken button and the owner doesn’t know it.

❹Replace your welcome mat with a fresh one

Top 10 Spring Selling Tips

Home is on .48 acres, approx. 3,262 sq. ft., 5 bedrooms, 3 baths,

private dock, tram transport to water.

Directions to property: take Hwy.48 into Wedowee,

take right on 431, cross 2 bridges

to County Road 82, turn left (gas station on left),

continue until you crossFosters Bridge, ramp on right.

Past 1st road Ivy Road, turn right onto Waters Drive and continue to the end of

the road. Continue upa paved driveway that will

lead you to the house.

Best Deal on Lake Wedowee $279,000Enjoy living at the lake … year round

and add some fresh cushions to your swing, rockers or chairs.

❺Pressure wash and paint any unsightly siding or trim work.

If a buyer sees that the outside has not been maintained, they will

automatically start wondering what else hasn’t been maintained.

❻Pressure wash the driveway, side walk and front steps.

❼Replace tired shrubs, flowers and landscaping mulch.

Remove any pots with dead plants and flowers.

❽Remove any of the “decorative” items in the flower beds and yard.

These are personal items and a buyer needs to be able to imagine

themselves building a life in that yard.

❾Clean the windows. It’s the best way to let in natural light.

Remember that a buyer spends several minutes looking around

the front entrance while an agent is trying to get the mls key

out of the lockbox. They will start forming opinions immediately

and if you’re selling, you want those opinions to be positive.

The Newnan-Coweta Chamber of Commerce was a part of the community team supporting the recent E-SPLOST referendum. We studied the costs and the benefits of E-SPLOST and carefully concluded this was the best possible option available to support our excellent school system. We now would like to thank the voters of Coweta County for braving the elements and taking the time to vote “Yes” for E-SPLOST. Of course, we always wish that more registered voters would visit the polls, too, but for those that did, we sincerely thank you. We also want to thank the Coweta County School System for the wonderful job they do. Our children are receiving excellent classroom instruction and opportunities to continue their education at many different levels. Our school system is succeeding under some of the most trying conditions with eroding financial support from traditional sources. You also have been efficient and conservative in your fiduciary responsibilities. Well done! The Chamber respects the concerns of those opposed to extending the E-SPLOST method and hope that you will see positive benefits come to Coweta as a result of passage. Your thoughtful and well-stated arguments were appreciated. We are very fortunate to live in a community that can conduct itself in a civil manner while debating the merits of these types of referenda. Ours is a county of informed, responsible and good people and we pledge to work hard at the Chamber to do our part to keep it this way. Again, thanks to all who voted!

ShrubsWho wouldn’t appreciate having a minimum maintenance land-

scape? Which plants can provide this while performing a wide vari-

ety of uses? Shrubs are the perfect solution. They can offer flowers,

berries, fruits, showy fall colors, fragrance and texture.

Shrubs can be used in many ways. It’s a matter of choosing the

right shrubs for the right place. They can control erosion, defuse light, provide shade, offer pri-

vacy, muffle noise, screen unsightly views, define spaces, direct foot traffic, serve as a wind break,

create a background for perennials and annuals., as well as many other useful functions.

Choosing the best shrubs for your own landscape doesn’t have to be confusing. Consider these

several factors when you are deciding which shrubs to select: is it hardy in your area?; will it grow

well in your type of soil?; what is its mature height and width?; how much sun or shade does it

require?; does it fit into your landscape plan?; how much water, fertilization, and pruning is re-

quired? The most important consideration of all is — do you like this plant — because there are

multiple choices for the same need.

Flowering shrubs are a great solution for gardeners who no longer have the physical abilities

to do lots of yard work. They are also excellent for the home owner who loves flowers but has very

little space to garden. Busy, younger adults appre-

ciate combining landscaping with shrubs and hav-

ing flowers, fruits and berries to add beauty and

bring inside the home to decorate.

Some examples of these are: blooms - azaleas,

camellias, hydrangas, rhododendrons, roses, for-

sythia, hibiscus, philadelphus, flowering quince,

viburnum; fragrance - tea olive, gardenia, daph-

ne, lavender, rosemary, osmanthus, lilac, banana

shrub, Carolina all spice also known as sweetshrub;

fruits - crabapple, blueberry, cranberry, pomegranate, quince, rose hips; berries - viburnum, cal-

licarpa, holly, pyracantha, mahonia, nandina, cotoneaster; varigated leaves - some varieties of

holly, osmanthus, daphne, acuba, eleagnus, gardenia, eyonymus, yucca, boxwood, pittosporum.
