O ur granddaughter recently spent the weekend with us while her parents were away, and we were instructed
to make sure she was prepared for an up coming test sched-uled at her school the following week. This 10 year old fourth grader was studying, indeed learning, about the south’s re-construction period after the Civil War. She had to memorize places, dates, the people involved and their agenda, as well as the ramifications of this historic project. To me, this seems a pretty ambitious assignment for a fourth grader, but I sup-pose I’m remembering how it was in Miss Brown’s class 55
years ago where our history lesson was “Columbus Sailed The Ocean Blue in Fourteen Hun-dred Ninety Two”, with a crew and three yachts.
Just because I hadto learn everythingthe hard way, shouldn’t mean
we all have to.
Children are now learning much more and at an earlier age, and it’s important to have an understanding of the past so as to culti-vate our wisdom for the future. But I believe that, in addition to great programs of his-tory, math, science and the arts, our young people would greatly benefit from learning how to organize their thoughts, make plans and set goals. I was never taught these things, but eventually learned some of them
by trial and error, along with the desire to move up a notch or two in life. We’ve all heard the saying, “knowledge is power”. But I tell you that knowledge has little or no power until it is har-nessed by the action of a desired result. Knowing that Reconstruction officially began in 1865 may be interesting, but it won’t show you how to complete a job application, understand a mort-gage loan, make a family budget, or even balance your checkbook. And then there are the little things. We hear a lot about social networking, but how many of the current generation can write a proper thank you note or respond to an R.S.V.P. And having good table manners may help more than you realize at your next lunch meeting. (I hope I’m not just living in the past.)
Just because I had to learn everything the hard way, shouldn’t mean we all have to. There is an organized, structured and proven way to get from where we are to where we want to be. It involves making plans and setting goals, then taking action to reach a desired result. Does it always work? No, but it’s better than drifting through life not knowing how to think and plan, living life one day at a time.
So, I hope we will one day see our schools add a little more of this “how to succeed in life” to the curriculum, which I believe, could be used as a tool to enhance those things we have memorized, which may result in a more organized and successful life. And to some, it may just be the jump start to a future of unlimited possibilities, perhaps previously unrealized.

Managing Difficult Yard Situations Many homeowners aim for a picture perfect lawn complete with rolling acres of soft, green grass. But Moth-
er Nature may have other things in mind, providing homeowners with less-than-stellar growing conditions for their lawns, plants and other foliage. Frustration can mount when a yard is muddy, is especially shady or has soil that doesn’t seem to grow a thing. In such instances, homeowners may have to go the extra mile to get the yard they desire.
Irrigation issues
Improper drainage or low-lying areas in a yard may contribute to a muddy mess. Soil that is inhospitable for grass also may end up causing muddy patches because the grass simply does not grow. In some cases, remedy-ing a muddy yard is easy and inexpensive. Some hom-eowners find that tilling the soil and amending it with a fiber mulch helps to absorb extra water and make the conditions better for lawn seeds to sprout. This also helps to aerate compacted soil that can hinder grass growth. Adding soil fill also may help to level low-lying areas that can be puddling.
Some homeowners find that they need to do a little more work and spend some more money to fix irrigation issues. Installing a draining system or having the proper-ty sloped to draw water away can sometimes be done by a homeowner but is often best left to a professional. You may need to dig trenches, and the property may need to be regraded to make a difference.
Sandy soil
Grass and other plants may not grow well with sandy or clay soil. Again, amending the soil is one way to remedy the problem. Although it will take some work at the outset, amending the soil can improve conditions and reduce how much maintenance the lawn needs. Digging down several inches and adding nutrient-rich filler soil will help create conditions that are better for growing. Those who are interested in planting vegetables could opt for raised garden beds above the challenging soil.Shade
Sometimes a yard is problematic because of the amount of sunshine it receives. Too much sunshine can scald certain grasses, while inadequate sunshine may result in bare patches where grass won’t grow. If cost is no object, removing or planting trees to establish better growing conditions could be an option. However, today there are many grass blends that are tailored toward specific sunlight scenarios. Homeowners may find that low-light blends will grow better in shady areas.
For those who are finding no luck with grass blends, it may just be necessary to think creatively. Plant shade-loving plants, such as ferns or ground cover, where the grass won’t take. Design the land-scape so it looks intentional. Flag-stone and slate placed in certain ar-eas also may mask temperamental growing areas.
There are different options for managing various situations in the yard that can make growing lawn or other plants challenging. If proj-ects are difficult, it could be smart to call in a professional.

Well, here we go again. Another simple but important task you can do to your vehicle for its long term health and well being and for your safety and con-venience is to maintain its ba ery.
Your vehicle’s ba ery provides the jolt of electricity needed to start the car, to keep it running, and to operate all those critical and essential electronic accessories we now take for granted. For starters, most cars use ba eries that pro-vide 12 volts of electricity. ere are two styles of ba eries. e older style needs to have water added periodically to maintain its rated power. Newer styles are sealed and you cannot add water. Both styles contain six separate cells in-side the case.
An older ba ery and/or older car may have a ba ery that has six twist-o caps each covering one cell or two
CAR CARE ESSENTIALS Check Your Car’s Battery part 1 …
pry-o rectangular caps that cover three cells each on the top of the ba ery case. During your monthly or quarterly main-tenance excursion, remove the caps and look inside each opening to see if the liquid inside forms a meniscus. A me-niscus is the tiny amount of liquid that climbs up the wall of the container be-cause of the thickness, surface tension, and viscosity of the liquid. If the surface of the liquid is at and re ective (no me-niscus) you need to add water until you have a meniscus. e liquid inside a bat-tery is sulfuric acid and water, so be care-ful. Add distilled water a li le at a time, poring slowly or using a basting tube or ba ery ller until you have a meniscus. Do this for each of the cells that is low on water. Wipe up any spills on the top of the ba ery case and replace the caps. You are done. Simple, eh?
If you have what is called a mainte-nance-free ba ery, there are no open-ings on the top of the ba ery. All you can do is look at the li le sh-eye indicator to see what it tells you. Reviewing the process in your Owner’s Manual will let you know how to tell if the ba ery has enough water and is holding a charge. On most ba eries if the indicator is green all is well; if it is red, no joy!.If the indicator tells you the ba ery is weak, all you can do is to re-charge it or re-place the ba ery. Go to a reputable auto parts store and they will come out to the parking lot and test your ba ery for free in the hope that you need one and will buy it from them. ey will even install it for free if you look helpless enough. Practice that! Ba ery power and prices have increased as cars have gained more of those complicated and power-hun-gry electronic doo-dads that we can’t do without, so be prepared for a bill of around $100 give or take, depending on how big and powerful the ba ery needs to be, how long the warrantee is, and who you buy it from.
Note the clean ba ery posts, the caps removed, the meniscus, and the sturdy hold-down strap on this ba ery

Road To RecoveRyVolunteer Drivers Needed
If you are looking for a great way to donate some of your time, consider becoming a volunteer driver for The American Cancer Society’s Road to Recovery Program. This volunteer-based program provides free transportation to cancer patients to and from their treatment locations. You can make a real differ-ence in the life of someone who needs regular cancer treatments. It is hard enough to have cancer without having to worry about how you will get to your ap-pointments.Being a Road to Recovery volunteer is so easy. And the rewards are great. You can choose how often and what day of the week you would like to drive, and what distance you would be willing to travel. Most patients’ appointments are local in Coweta County. The training is free. Requirements include a good driving record, a valid driver’s license, auto insurance, and a vehicle that is in good working condition. For more info on becoming a volunteer driver, con-tact Road to Recovery volunteer coordinator, Emily Stastny at 770-378-1616 or email her at [email protected].

Rare Car Wax ... Hard to Get
(MS) -- There’s a paste car wax that appears to be in demand by afficionados and collectors of rare and expensive automobiles. Hand made infrequently in very small batches, eight ounces of the highly con-centrated Malm’s carnauba paste is a pricey $145.00. Supposedly, just a tiny amount is enough for a full size car. Don’t expect any of those car fanatics to tell you about this wax. They keep it a tightly guarded secret so their cars can outshine yours and competi-tors at car shows.
Here’s the catch. If you have not previously used the company’s liquid* carnauba wax (a 1/2 pint is $25 + $8 sh/hdl) and been fully satisfied with it, they won’t sell you the paste. Even when you can order it, expect to wait as long as 10 weeks for the paste.
Find it online at www.malms.com or write Malm Chem. Corp, Dept. ME-411, PO BOX 300, POUND RIDGE, NY 10576-0300.
* Note: It has been reported that the gloss of their liquid carnauba is just as good as their paste.

Merry MayNow is the merry month of May, with baskets for May Day and Mother’s Day. Flowering shrubs such as for-sythia, azalea, camellia, spirea, etc. should have already been pruned. The flowery thoughts of May lead natu-rally to the planting of warm season blooming annuals. Cosmos, zinnias, marigolds, celosia, sunflowers, petu-nias, phlox verbena, nicotiana, strawflower, geraniums and gomphrena love full sun and heat. For warm weath-er shady areas coleus, ferns, hostas, inpatients, begonias and caladiums will do well. Ivy vinca major and vinca minor make good ground covers in shady areas. Lambs Ears and sedum work well in full sun. Morning glories, black-eyed susan vine, mandervilla and alamanda are sun and heat loving vines.
May is the perfect time to plant tomatoes and peppers. They like the soil to be warm un-derneath before being planted, plus sun and heat. Tomatoes like rich soil and consistent moister. They are heavy feeders so fertilize regularly. When planting, bury deeply. Some people dig a trench and lay the vine down side-ways with only the top showing. The rest of the tomato vine is covered with soil. There are two types of tomatoes – determinate and indeterminate. Determinate grow to a set height while indeterminate varieties will keep climbing and keep producing. There are short bush types often called “patio” tomatoes. These are a good choice for containers. Miniature varieties such as cherry and grape toma-toes are also good for large containers.

Page 22 J The Coweta Shopper J May 1, 2013 J www.thecowetashopper.com
I discovered that I can no longer do the splits. I don’t know when I lost this particular tal-
ent, sometime between cheerleading practice 1990 and Tuesday is the closest I can narrow it down.
I thought it was like riding a bike – once you learn you never forget – but sure enough while dancing to the Wiggles with my babies I was slapped by Father Time. e worst part is I prefaced my fancy move with, “Watch this girls,” so I had their undivided a ention when I did a high-powered kick in the air and slid to the split position. Situated there, legs splayed, and still a foot o the ground was where the fun ended and the pain and humiliation began. Sure, I tried to blame the tight jeans, but in my heart I knew my leg-spli ing days had disappeared. I’d never get called for the Olympics now.
e aging process is so unfair, but I suppose I only have myself to blame. I should have been practicing my splits at least once a week, but I tell you I just didn’t see this coming. What else have I lost along the pathway toward middle age? Could I wake up tomorrow and not be able to moonwalk across the kitchen oor? I just couldn’t let that happen. I’ve started to inventory my physical skills and test the exibility of each component of my body on a regular basis.
I’m happy to report that I can still do a sit up, cartwheel, and a semi-acceptable round-o . Fortunately, I caught the push up just in time, but sadly my backbend, like the splits, is a skill of the past. I didn’t even try the stand up and bend over backwards approach; I just dropped to the oor, arched my back and tried to push with my shaking arms, but it was no use. I just couldn’t get my form. Truth be known, my head never really le the oor; it was just my hips sticking up in the air taunting my lazy upper body. I couldn’t even get my hands to bend in
the right way – how do your hands get out of shape?
My husband found me practicing a head stand against the living room wall a er three failed a empts at a direct no-wall approach. “You’re losing your mind,” he said. I fell gracefully to the oor, leaving out my usual “Ta da”. I purposely looked at his gut. “You should do a li le inventory yourself. When’s the last time you did a backwards roll? Believe me, the backwards stu goes rst. I’m not taking any chances and you shouldn’t either. e kids and I are going roller skating tomorrow.”
He laughed. “We just took the kids skating a few months ago and you skated backwards ne.”
“I know, but I didn’t try the limbo.”
So it’s se led, tomorrow we skate and possibly take a late a ernoon trip to the Castle Playground. I know I’ve got plenty of sliding and swing jumping in me, but a er that unpleasant backbend a empt, I’m concerned about my monkey bar ability. I may have lost a good percentage of my upper body strength, and I’m going to have to endure some awkward stares to nd out for sure.
I plop down on the couch and nd myself in one of my imaginary conversations with Dr. Phil. “Listen,” he says, “You’ve got to think about all that you have gained throughout the years. Stop wasting time focusing on your physical losses.” I know that he’s right; there are things I can do now that I couldn’t even do at eighteen. I have a great family, good health, a roof over my head – I hear what he’s saying (well, not literally, but my imaginary conversations are food for therapy on a di erent day). Today I don’t want a rmations. Today I don’t want counseling. Today I want to know how I can get my hands on a hoola hoop and how in the world I can get my splits back.

Surprise Mom With Overnight Egg Dish
Serve up a tasty brunch surprise for Mom on Mother’s Day. It’s an easy overnight egg dish like you’ve never tasted before — fresh apples and apple-chicken sausage are the new ingredients that give it extra zip.
Whether you set up a pretty break-fast-in-bed tray or make place set-tings for the whole family at your kitchen table, she’ll be thrilled by the celebration that focuses on her.
Let the kids prepare this brunch
entree with another adult the night before.
There is cheese to shred, bread to cube and lots of eggs to crack — per-fect jobs for junior chefs. You also might want to prep some fruit and berries as a side to the egg dish.
MOTHER’S DAY EGG DISH
5 cups of 3/4-inch square cubes of bread from a sour dough or French baguette
5-6 links (about 3/4 pound) of chicken-apple pre-cooked sausage, cut into 1/2-inch slices 1 1/2 cups grated medium and sharp cheddar cheese 2 apples peeled and thinly sliced 6 eggs beaten 2 cups milk 1/2 teaspoon salt and cracked pepper to taste.
Put the following together the night before.
1. Set the cubes of bread in a but-tered glass 8-inch-by-11-inch baking dish. Sprinkle sausage, cheese and apples on top. Lightly toss together.
2. Combine beaten eggs, milk and salt and pepper in a bowl and pour mixture over all, making sure bread is soaked with the mixture. Cover with aluminum foil and refrigerate overnight.
3. In the morning, remove foil, pre-heat oven to 350 degrees and bake for 45-50 minutes.
4. Let stand for 10 minutes, then cut into serving pieces. Serves 6.

Debunking Common MythsAbout Carpeting
Carpeting has long been a reliable flooring option to keep rooms looking good and feeling comfortable underfoot. There’s something to be said about having a plush, warm cushion on the floors of a home. Carpeting can help buffer sounds and minimize injuries from falls. Walking around on a padded surface may minimize back and joint pain as well as feel more comfortable when going barefoot. Despite all of the advantages to carpeting, some people continue to avoid it for a variety of reasons, many of which are rooted in myth. The following are a few of the more com-mon myths associated with carpeting.
Myth: Carpeting contributes to allergens constantly circulating through-out the home.
FAct: Carpeting is actually better at trapping allergens and dust in its fibers than smooth-surface floors. That means that with carpeting there are fewer particles airborne and circulating. Regular vacuuming can remove trapped allergens.
Myth: Carpets pose significant health risks.
FAct: Extensive toxicological assessments of the components of carpet have been studied through the years. There has been no conclusive evidence that carpets present any health risk, particularly of a carcinogenic nature.
Myth: Carpet is a source of indoor air quality problems.
FAct: Regular cleaning and vacuuming of carpet reduces the number of al-lergens contained within, which makes carpet no more likely to contribute to air quality issues than any other type of flooring.
Myth: Carpet has formaldehyde in it.
FAct: Formaldehyde was removed from the carpet-manufacturing process in 1978. It is unlikely anyone still has original carpeting from 35 years ago, and even if that is the case, the formaldehyde would have dissipated by now.
Myth: Carpeting is made from a host of chemical products.
FAct: Carpeting is made largely from nylon, wool, polypropylene and poly-ester. These are the same materials used in clothing, which spends hours rest-ing up against the skin. Polypropylene is one of the safer plastics that does not contain BPA and is even used in some baby bottles.
Myth: Mold grows regularly on carpeting.
FAct: Unless you have a flood or a leak that is keeping carpeting saturated, mold will not grow during regular use. Elevated humidity levels in a home also may contribute to mold growth. Mold is typically a result of a moisture issue. Remove the moisture and you remove the mold.
Myth: Thicker carpeting will wear longer and better.
FAct: It is not the thickness or plushness of the carpeting but the density of the fibers that will be a telling clue of durability. This means a relatively thin carpet that is woven densely will likely last quite a while.
Myth: Carpeting can never be truly clean.
FAct: No surface can be 100 percent free from dirt. But with proper clean-ing, carpeting can be just as clean as other flooring materials.
Many people would like to have carpeting in their homes but are deterred by a handful of enduring myths. Knowing the facts can help homeown-ers make more informed decisions regarding flooring materials.

“On the Razzle” opens on the Newnan Theatre Company Main Stage May 9
By Joan Doggrell“On the razzle” is a British expression meaning a night on the town involving alcohol consumption and rau-
cous fun. NTC’s production of “On the Razzle,” by Tom Stoppard, opens on the Newnan Th eatre Company Main Stage on May 9. Audiences won’t need adult beverages to have a rollicking good time.
“Th ere are so many jokes that each audience member should buy two tickets and come twice to be able to catch everything,” said Director Justin Jessell. “Th e sett ing is Victorianish – but it’s supposed to feel more like a live-action cartoon than a real period piece.”
“On the Razzle” has all the elements of a traditional farce: slapstick, mistaken identities, misdirected orders, malapropisms, double entendres, and romantic complications.
Herr Zangler ( Jeff Allen) is the owner of a fancy grocery store in a small Austrian village. His two shop assistants, Wein-berl (Daniel Lees) and Christopher ( Josh Hendricks), are left to mind the store while Zangler goes off to Vienna to marry Mme. Knorr(Kristi Rapson) and begin a new life in the big city. His hard-working assistants suddenly realize that they are taking on heavy responsibilities without ever having had much fun. So, with the master away, they decide to go “on the razzle” in Vienna themselves.
Romantic complications are provided by Zangler’s neice Marie and her penniless amour Sonders (played by Laura and William Pratesi). Zangler opposes their marriage, so they elope to Vienna. Th ere they become entangled in the web of decep-tion that Weinberl and Chrisopher weave to keep Zangler from discovering their escapade. Aft er much confusion and hilarity, “all’s well that ends well,” and everyone lives hap-pily ever aft er.
Other players include Drew Turner as Melchior, Melanie Carrin as Ms Blumenblatt , and Keilly Isaack as Hildegarde Fisher. Jason Schmidt, Stuart Grable, Samantha Teague, Casey Bunce and Elizabeth Murphy are playing multiple roles.
To purchase tickets, for show dates, times, visit www.newnantheatre.org or visit the box offi ce before or aft er any performance. Th e theater is located in historic downtown Newnan at 24 First Avenue.
Imagine someone wearing an apron in the kitchen – cooking a marvelous meal. Can you almost smell the food? Can you feel the warmth?
What if there was no food to prepare? Sadly, empty cupboards are a reality for too many people in our community. In Newnan, nearly 1 out of every 5 people is living below the poverty level.
The Coweta Community Food Pantry is desperate for your donations!
We will happily be accepting your contributions on
Saturday, May 18 from 10:00-1:00 at the
Town Hall in SummerGrove
Please help us fill the vintage shopping carts! Would you like to include your vintage apron in our “apron garland” tied between the Town Hall pillars? We would love to borrow it, and include it in our unique event décor and photo opportunity! Please, just drop the apron off at 9:00 am and pick it up between 1-1:30 pm. We hope you will join us in our light-hearted opportunity to fill a serious need!
*Some of the items needed by the Pantry include shelf-stable items such as:
canned meat rice

tomatoes tomato sauce

Cherry Tucker Returns For Another Quirky
Rural Southern Romp
A review of Larissa ReinhartStill Life in Brunswick Stew (Henery Press, 2013) $15.95 Reviewer: Forrest W. Schultz
As she promised on her website, Fayette County author Larissa Reinhart has served up another wacky rural Southern romp star-ring Cherry Tucker, a professional artist and a novice mystery-solver in the book under review here, which is scheduled to be pub-lished on May 21, 2013. This one outdoes the first in its complex-ity and its quirkiness. The town of Halo is back plus we are intro-duced to a new one, Sidewinder, the site of the Brunswick Stew Festival, where the story opens. And Cherry is even stronger and sassier than ever, so much so that I expect we will soon hear that she has been nominated for the Steel Magnolia award for the strongest Southern woman character in a novel published in 2013. And the book, like the first one, will doubt-less receive awards for being such a good read and having such an at-tractive character.
Info on the author is available at http://www.henerypress.com/ and www.larissareinhart.com.
