The Coweta Shopper is a popular and effective advertising guide mailed weekly to 16,400+ homes and busi-nesses throughout Coweta county. We have successfully served the Coweta county area for over twenty years with our consumer-oriented guide consist-ing of a wide variety of retail and ser-vice advertisers, along with classified advertisements.
Our office is locatedon the corner of
Hwy. 29 South & Pine Road
Office Hours are Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday 9 - 5.

The Coweta Shopper reserves the right to accept or reject any advertising as we feel is in the best interest of our publication.
I don’t know about you, but it seems to me that this year has
galloped by like a thoroughbred race horse. But, I suppose we
say that every year, don’t we? Here at the Coweta Shopper’s
“World Headquarters” (our only office at this time), we are in the
process of deciding on a few changes which will, hopefully, make
our publication more interesting and informative, as well as a bet-
ter value for our advertisers. We’ll try to do more articles about
local business owners as well as employee spotlights, gardening
and decorating. And local guest contributors can inform us about
their specialty in services such as health care, insurance, Social
Security, Medicare and taxes. It would be easy to just download
things from the internet, but we think our readers enjoy knowing more about the folks right
here in Coweta County. The Armchair Gardener will continue to provide information about
growing plants and arranging flowers,
and Nan Johnston will share some inter-
esting information about interior design
and decorating. Sharpsburg’s Bob Spruck
has written some popular What’s in Your
Garage articles in the past and knows his
stuff about classic cars, vintage racing and
car maintenance. Bob is a free lance writ-
er for a couple of national magazines and
has agreed to do some writing for us again next year.
But all of this, along with selling and designing advertisements, takes a lot of work, talent and
coordination. Rusty Kuehl, who started with the company shortly after its founding in 1989, does
a tremendous job with advertising sales. His clients really like him, some having worked with
him for over twenty years. Barbara Kirkman started selling ads for us almost two years ago. She is
a hard worker, knows the ad business and has developed a loyal following of a good many regular
customers. Our money, when we have some, is tended to by Robin McLaughlin, who has a back-
ground in banking. She’s not only great at what she does, but is one of the most pleasant people I
have ever worked with. But the main “Worker Bee” around our office is Ruth Harris Doyal. She
has been with The Shopper since 1990 and does the ad layout and design, placement within the
paper, and gathers details about upcoming events for our readers. Ruth is the center of gravity
around here, turning everything we do into a publication every week without fail. We couldn’t do
it without her.
Our goal at The Coweta Shopper is to “Connect the citizens of our community with the
products and services available here, and to do so in a positive, informative and interesting
way”. One way you can help is to give us your comments about what you would like to see in
future publications. I hope you will send me an email with your thoughts so we can serve you
better. I’m sitting right here in front of my computer waiting to hear from you

Orthopedic Outpatient Surgery at the Summit Surgery Center
I’ve been told I need orthopedic sur-gery? What is orthopedic surgery and where is it performed?
Orthopedic surgery includes any surgical procedure performed on your bones or joints. Many of these procedures can be performed in an outpatient setting, which means that the patient can go home later the same day after having surgery.
Common outpatient orthopedic surgical procedures include arthros-copy, hand surgery, foot surgery, and even many spine procedures. Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure, where the sur-geon makes a small incision and uses a scope to look in a joint and make a repair. These surgical techniques are easily accomplished in the proper outpatient setting, maximizing effec-tive care and minimizing cost to the patient. In fact, outpatient surgery centers typically deliver high qual-ity care for as much as a 40% savings over hospital based surgery.
Another major advantage to hav-ing surgery in an outpatient center is that orthopedic surgery centers specialize in one area. The doctors, nurses, and technologists working in a single specialty can maximize their skills and minimize errors.
Can I choose to have my outpatient procedure done in an orthopedic center?
Sure, provided that your physi-cian has privileges at such a center. The physicians of Georgia Bone and Joint believe in the quality care and continuous improvement embod-ied in single specialty orthopedic surgery centers. Years ago, we de-veloped the Summit Surgery Cen-ter to reflect and enhance the high quality care we strive to provide at Georgia Bone and Joint. In fact, we just celebrated our eleven year anni-versary at the Summit Healthplex in Newnan!
How can I be evaluated by a physi-cian at Georgia Bone and Joint?
Georgia Bone and Joint has offices in Newnan at The Summit Health-plex and in Peachtree City in the Fayette Medical Building at Shaker-ag. Call us in Newnan at 770-502-2175 or Peachtree City at 770-626-5340 or visit us on the web at http://www.gbandj.com.

“Identity Crisis”
Some of our readers have been asking the question, “Who is the Arm-chair Gardener?” As the grandmother of five older grandchildren, I am truly the Armchair Gardener. It’s been fun writing articles in the Shopper for the past two and a half years. I’ve enjoyed sharing tips, in-formation, and suggestions with our readers. Some may not be able to take classes or attend meetings. The Shopper is delivered, free of charge, to every mailing address in the county.
My grandmother, who was a wonderful grower, taught me to love plants and flow-ers. My father was a great gardener! Arrang-ing flowers has been an interest since being exposed to my mother’s “Pause for Living” magazines (Coca~Cola Company) as a teen-ager. Fifty years later, I still have those maga-zines.
I’ve attended many programs, classes and workshops over the past thirty-five years. Membership in two garden clubs led to Flow-er Show Schools and Flower Show Judges Symposiums. I’m an accredited Master Flow-er Show Judge Emeritus.
In recent years, health issues have caused me to discontinue much of my gardening and arranging activi-ties. My wonderful and patient hus-band had six raised garden beds built for flowers and patio contain-ers provide herbs. The Newnan Util-ities has a great compost for flowers and shrubs. It’s still a work in prog-ress. I continue to read, study, and attend programs and shows. It’s an enjoyable challenge keeping up with changing styles and rules of design and horticulture.
Thank you to all our readers for allowing me into your homes.
Happy New Year to all!

Moreland Meals and Memories Cookbook
“Moreland Meals and Memories,” the new cook book prepared by the Moreland Community Historical Society, is at the printers and will beready for Christmas giving. “We are looking forward to having our cook-book as a great source for finding good recipes – and as a reminder of our community’s interesting past,” said Josh Evans, MCHS president. The cookbook has almost 400 recipes, gathered from cooks in Moreland and friends of the community and society.
Evans, who is also the town’s mayor, wrote an introduction to the book. “Moreland Meals and Memories” will also feature a short history of Mo-reland by local writer Winston Skinner, who also wrote vignettes about various facets of Moreland history for the section dividers.
Books purchased in advance – with a deadline of Dec. 7 – will be $15 each. Mailing is available for an additional $2. Orders may be sent to MCHS, P.O. Box 128, Moreland, GA 30259. After Dec. 7, books will be $18 each.
People who purchase pre-orders will be able to pick up their books on Dec. 19 from 9 a.m.-noon at the Moreland Mill. Evans and Skinner will be available to autograph books from 10:30-noon that day. People who pre-order but cannot pick up books on Dec. 19 should include a phone number and/or email so arrangements can be made to pick up books. All proceeds go to help preserve our local history and other historical society projects.
Thank you for your support!
Exterior Paint ColorsThe exterior walls are one of the most important features of any home because it’s the first thing that someone sees when they visit or pass by your house. Many home owners are remodeling their homes with a fresh coat of paint, but often have difficulty deciding on a color or a combination of colors to use. Es-pecially if there is a possibility that you may need to sell the house in the near future.
Before running to the paint store to choose a color consider the style of your home and what is traditionally being used on that style. Look for similar homes and take inspiration from them to help with the decision. Also, consider the other homes in your neighborhood. It’s advisable to choose colors that are compatible with them. If you live in a subdivision you may need to check with your Home Owners Association (HOA) to see if there are restrictions & covenants concerning exterior paint choic-es.
Choosing colors that coordinate with the fixed assets of the home that can’t be changed such as the roof, siding material such as brick, stone, etc. is important as well.
Decide on the main house color first (if it’s to be painted). Experts advise to try a few different shades of the color that you want on a small portion of the house to see how it looks. It’s difficult to decide from a small chip on a paint strip and most paint brands sell small sample sizes for this purpose. Af-
ter your color choice has been finalized, then choose the trim and accent colors.
Some of the most popular exterior colors through-out America are:
#1 White/ Off-White - Always a classic choice.
#2 Tan - Can be Beige or Taupe
#3 Gray - Another classic choice
#4 Yellow - Soft Corn Silk, Classical Yellow or
a Dusty Yellow are good choices.
#5 Blue - Think bleached denim
Most paint companies have an exterior paint guide that you can use to help decide on a color scheme. Then the only thing to decide after this is are you going to DIY (do it yourself) or hire a contractor. I know which way I’d go!
For more information on choosing paint colors, contact:

Carnegie Writers Exchange Authors Jointly Publish Christmas Book
For several Coweta County authors, this Christmas is extra special; they have been published for the first time. As members of the Carnegie Writers Exchange, they contributed stories to an anthology, The Christmas Gift: A Collection of Short Stories from the Carnegie Writers, Newnan, GA.
Holly Moulder, co-facilitator of the group that meets at the Carnegie Li-brary, is a former Coweta county school teacher. She has published two award-winning novels with her third title, Crys-tal City Lights, to be released in spring, 2013, by Blue Marlin Publications, New York. “We invite writers at all levels of the craft. We offer each other encour-agement and critiques. Being a part of the Carnegie Writers has made me a better, more confident writer.”
“Four members of the group have published at least one novel,” said co-facilitator Swanee Ballman, president of Jawbone Publishing and award-winning author of six novels. “We’re an eclectic group, which makes for lively discussions. The opinions of everyone are respected, whether a novice at the craft or a seasoned writer. We realize that, re-gardless of how much we have written, we still need growth, and the writ-ers’ exchange offers the opportunity to hone our skill.”
The Christmas Gift is the third anthology where a short story by local author Edwina Cowgill can be found. Cowgill, owner of Monarch Editing Services in Newnan, is working on her first non-fiction manuscript.
First-time published authors who are featured in The Christmas Gift are Betty Bell Dunaway, Charles Bowen, Danae McBurney, and Sid Brown. Dunaway, who owns a real estate appraisal business, has recent-ly begun her first novel about life in Alabama, her home state. Bowen, retired from the banking industry, is working on several writing projects. McBurney’s short story is an excerpt from the rough draft of a novel she has been writing for several years. Brown, a former mechanical designer and law enforcement officer, is completing his first novel, Duncan’s Pos-se.
The Christmas Gift can be purchased at Scott’s Book Store.
The group meets bi-monthly at the Carnegie Library in Newnan. At each meeting, participants either share something they have written or engage in a real-time writing assignment. Also, members offer presenta-tions in their areas of expertise to spark writing ideas among the group. (For meeting times and dates, call the Carnegie at 770-683-1347 or go to www.newnancarnegie.com)

Volunteers play a vital role in the support of our pa-tients and their families. Support is given in many ways – sitting at bedside to relieve an exhausted caregiver, performing small tasks in the patient’s home, reading to a patient, or spending time with a patient and their family as a “friendly visitor”. No special skills are needed but a passion to serve others is desired.
Please call Mary at 678-817-4180 if you have ques-tions about our program or if you would like to at-tend volunteer training.

Volunteers for Affinis HospiceAll you need is a caring heart! Your involvement will communicate value to these patients and their families as you provide companionship and a brief respite for caregivers. You will not need to provide any medical or physical care to the patient, just a caring heart and a listening ear. You can provide caregiver relief for 2-4 hours each week to allow the caregiver to enjoy time out of the home. You can use your gifts and talents to impact someone in their last stages of life in many ways, and we will make sure you are well-trained, equipped, and supported. This choice is made by parents of low-income families every day and many times involves the family pet. “Local shelters and animal rescues are experiencing an increase in owner relinquish-ments of family pets due to the family’s inability to afford pet food and pet care for their beloved four-legged family members” reports LouAnn Jones, President, Newnan Coweta Humane Society. Giv-ing up a family pet to make sure it is has food and is healthy is a very traumatic experience for both the humans AND the animal. Fortunately, many families will no longer be required to make the choice to feed themselves or their pets. The Newnan Coweta Pet Food Pantry will provide temporary food assistance to pet owners who are currently unable to afford food for their pets and may be forced to give up their pets without food assistance.
The NCHS Pet Food Pantry will be an ongoing program and monthly distributions will occur on the 1st Saturday of each month. Qualified program recipients can receive a one month supply for up to three pets. All pets must be spayed/neutered and up to date on Rabies. If not fixed or current on Rabies, NCHS can provide assistance at no cost to qualified Coweta residents. The next scheduled food distribution will be on Saturday, January 5, 2013 at the HELP Spay Neuter Clinic, 12 The Crescent, Newnan, GA from 9am-12noon. Residents needing assistance with feeding their pets will need to complete an application for the program. Residents must bring a picture ID, and proof of income in order to qualify for assistance. Forms can be picked up in advance at the HELP Clinic, or by emailing NCHS at [email protected].
NCHS will gladly accept donations of Dog or Puppy Food (dry or canned), Cat or Kitten Food (dry or canned), Stainless Steel Bowls (please no plastic or ceramic), Kitty Litter, Nylon adjust-able dog collars and leashes at the following locations: NCHS Adoption Events (to a NCHS Volunteer) at Newnan PetSmart on Sundays from 12:30 to 3:30; All-Star Mini Storage, 8 Newnan South Industrial (off Hwy 29 South); H.E.L.P. Spay Neuter Clinic, 12 The Crescent (in Avery Park off Hwy 29 North).
For information on receiving pet food assistance, please email our Pet Food Pantry Director, Holly Lewis at [email protected] or call the Pet Food Pantry Voicemail (Holly Lewis) at 678-590-1430.

Happy Tails Pet Salon has a new manager and groomer. Shelly Daws and her family have al-ways been animal people and she especially loves dogs. In the spring of 2008, Shelly took groom-ing classes from Happy
Tail’s original owner, Judy Hortman and has worked for Petco in Peachtree City. “Some dogs have anxiety attacks when being groomed”, says Shelly. “I like to work with those special needs dogs to make their visit a pleasant one”. Although extra services are available, Happy Tails provides everything that should be includ-ed for a particular breed without extra charges. “Ev-erything your dog needs to walk out of the salon look-ing and feeling great comes in our basic package”.
Shelly Daws is a lifelong resident of the Coweta County area. She and her husband Chainey, have two children Sydney and Ethan. And let’s not forgot the family’s two Shih Tzu’s, Princess and Velvet. You can reach Happy Tails Pet Salon by calling 678-416-3835.

Charles High’s interest in coins started when he was just a teenager. In 2011, after retiring from 30 years service with Delta, Charles, along with his wife, Eileen, opened Township Coins and Collectibles in the Sharpsburg area. “We are re-sponding to the community’s need for a respect-able and reputable place to sell and purchase coins and currency, as well as giving the best prices for gold”, says Charles. And if you are new to collecting, you need not be intimidated. Charles and Eileen will help you learn and will actually show you the reference books on which they base their pricing. “You can leave our store knowing you received a fair deal”.
The history of coins is also of interest to the Highs. United States currency travels more and sees more of the country than most U.S. citi-zens. If coins could speak, what would they tell us? Over a period of a century or more, a coin could have been used to buy a loaf of bread, pay the doctor, or help purchase a horse – perhaps being held and used by thousands of people from one end of the country to the other.
So, if you have a question about buying or sell-ing coins or currency, or selling your gold, give Charles or Eileen a ring at 770-254-2727, or visit Township Coins and Collectibles at 3500 Hwy 34 East, Suite 3. You’ll be shopping with confi-dence at a locally owned and operated Coweta County Business.
