The Coweta Shopper reserves the right to accept or reject any advertising as we feel is in the best interest of our publication.

I recently thought about a project the Shopper could start and sup-port in our community. We would place signs in the large discount

chain stores which read: “Please do not beat your children in this store or within 500 feet of the parking lot!” We could also have brochures in racks throughout the store offering a list of ways to “show restraint” while shopping with your children. Suggestions could include: “You’ll be eating off the mantel tonight”, and “You’re cruisin’ for a bruisin”, or “Boy, I’m gonna warp your frame”! The proposals must be, of course, whispered into the ear of the offending child as future reference. But please don’t tell them ten times that “I’m not going to tell you again”.

When I was a child, my mother never beat me in “J-Mart” for two reasons. Those big stores did not then exist, and if they had, we would not have had the funds to be there. But I did receive my share of discipline at home. There were 5 children in our family and my mother was in charge of the spanking. Actually, spanking was for nov-ices – my Mom was a “Pro”, handing out sentences which really got my attention. She kept a belt hanging on a nail, attached to the door casing, which could be “placed into action” at a moments notice. Momma had two styles of “whippings”, as we called them: “individual” and “wholesale”. The individual method was used when she had time enough to “seek and destroy”. She would hold me by the arm and apply that belt to my backside, and as I tried to run, we just went around in a circle. If I ran fast enough, the belt couldn’t pick up the nec-essary speed to make much of an impact, and after a minute or so, we were so winded we both just sat down and laughed. A little music added to this “demonstration of discipline” would have been quite entertaining! The “wholesale” method was used on my siblings and me when at least 3 of us were in a fuss or fight together. She would enter the room with that belt flying - from left to right in a wide arc, “meeting the needs” of all in its’ path! We eventually learned to scatter in different directions causing her to seek a single target, then changing back to her “individual” method, referred to earlier, before pursuing the remain-ing offenders. There were usually outcries of innocence, and phrases like, “she did it, or, it wasn’t my fault”! But it didn’t help. We were considered guilty as charged until punishment could be administered. No discussion!

So, although we had our share of discipline, we children were able to survive long enough to grow up and leave home in one piece and without too many scars. We also learned to re-spect authority. Although the above description is true (but perhaps partially embellished), our mother, “Miss Daisy”, loved us very much and always put our needs before hers. What more could we have asked.

JoePost script: The Mansour brothers used to call me “the seatless wonder” when measuring

me for trousers, and my momma said it looked like a family had “moved out” of the back of my pants. It’s because my backside was “corrected” so many times; it became “deflated” like a flat tire, and never grew in proportion to my height!

(Post) Post script: Inasmuch as my little sister wasn’t born until I was in high school, she knows nothing, whatsoever, about this matter and is unable to corroborate my story.

As always, I invite your comments and suggestions to help us make The Coweta Shopper an interesting and effective advertising medium.

“ Momma had two styles of “whippings”, as we called them: “individual” and “wholesale”. ”

Pig Out at Thanksgiving and You May Shop Less

Eating a traditional Thanksgiving dinner with turkey and mashed potatoes makes consumers less likely to buy on impulse, which might affect their shopping on Black Friday, historically one of the busiest retail shopping days of the year, according to two University of Utah marketing professors.

In “We Are What We Consume: The Influence of Food Consumption on Consumer Impulsivity,” Arul Mishra and Himanshu Mishra show how the types of food con-sumed during Thanksgiving can influence impulsive choices; for instance whether consumers buy on sales the next day or not.

“Most of us don’t connect what we eat to our subsequent choices,” Arul Mishra said. “However, our research shows that types of food, such as turkey, make peo-ple behave less impulsively. Such people are less likely to buy products available at a discount and will find it easier to restrain their impulsive urges and choices.”

In other words, if you’re looking to spend less this holiday season, eat a good Thanksgiving meal.

And what about cutting down on impulse buying the other 364 days of the year? Try protein shakes, which -- like turkey -- have high levels of serotonin and also were found to reduce consumers’ impulses. “Given that people consume several types of protein drinks for breakfast, they should be made aware that such drinks can reduce their impulsive responding,” Himanshu Mishra said.

The authors suggest that if consumers are made aware that serotonin from spe-cific foods can reduce impulsive product choice and responding, they could use this information to modify their behavior.

It’s Thanksgiving week. And if you’re fortunate, you

can look around your Thanksgiving table and see several

generations of your family. Of course, as you know, many

types of cohesiveness are involved in knitting a family to-

gether. But one connection that frequently gets ignored,

at least in terms of family dialogue, is the financial linkage

between parents and their children on one hand, and these

same parents and their parents on the other. So if you find

yourself in this “sandwich” group, it may be worth consid-

ering your financial position.

If your children are very young, you might want to

start by emphasizing the importance of three separate

concepts: saving, spending and sharing. If you give them

an allowance, or if you pay them to do some minor tasks

around the household, you can encourage them to put the

money in three separate containers. The “spending” jar is

for them to use as they choose, the “saving” jar is to be

put in some type of savings or investment account and the

“sharing” jar is to be used for contributions to charitable

causes. You can extend the spending, saving and sharing

themes by encouraging your kids to spend wisely, watch

how their savings grow and feel pride in the work done by

the charitable groups their dollars support.

Later, when your kids are older, and can earn money

by babysitting, mowing lawns or working part-time, you

can further encourage good financial habits by offering to

match their contributions to a Roth IRA. And be sure to

discuss the different types of investments available; they

may enjoy learning about the ways in which they can par-

ticipate in the financial markets.

Art Holbrook, CFP®, CRPC®

Financial AdviserEdward Jones6 Jefferson Parkway, Suite A, Newnan770-251-3500art.holbrook@edwardjones.comwww.edwardjones.com

Above all else, talk to them about the importance of

developing good financial skills and how these skills will

play a part in your family’s overall well being.

Now, let’s turn to your parents. If they’re elderly, you

may find that talking to them about financial issues may

be considerably more challenging than talking about

these issues with your children. It’s unfortunate, but true:

People are sensitive about money and often don’t want to

talk about it.

You may find that you need to be persistent, especially

if your parents are getting on in years. Perhaps you en-

courage them to consider their current position, and what

planning might need to be considered. Do they have ac-

counts in a local bank? Where are their investments held?

Do they have a financial advisor? Have they worked with

legal professionals on any arrangements?

If your parents have expressed interest in leaving a

legacy or passing assets to family members, you might

consider encouraging them to seek assistance from the

appropriate professionals. After all, if something were to

happen to your parents without them having made the

proper arrangements, their wishes may not be carried

out.

So this Thanksgiving, as you think about the value of

your family, you might take some time to consider issues

that need to be addressed. . It may take time and diligence

— but when it comes to your loved one’s wishes and well-

being, it’s probably worth the effort.

announced that world-renowned chef and fel-

low Georgian, Virginia Willis will visit the Carn-

egie for a presentation Monday, November 28th

from 5:00-7:30 pm on her new cookbook, Basic

to Brilliant, Y’all: 150 Refined Southern

Recipes and Ways to Dress Them Up For

Company.

A graduate of L’Academie de Cuisine and Ecole

de Cuisine LaVarenne, Virginia previously served

as Kitchen Director for Martha Stewart Living

Television supervising food segments for the Em-

my-award winning television show.

With MSLTV, Virginia was also responsible for

preparing private meals and events for Martha and

her guests -- quite a few celebrities! As Executive

Producer for Epicurious on The Discovery Chan-

nel, she traveled the world taping fantastic stories

about food - from harvesting capers in the shadow

of a smoldering volcano to making authentic mustard in Dijon.

Virginia’s wide and varied food career started in Atlanta as an apprentice to Nathalie Dupree. She

worked with Dupree on four PBS series and cookbooks, including the James Beard award-winning

Comfortable Entertaining.

The presentation will be followed by a book signing courtesy of Scott’s Bookstore and gift items from

Virginia’s “My Southern Pantry” will be available for purchase. The Carnegie Library is located at

1 LaGrange St in historic downtown Newnan and is open daily Monday through Friday. This presenta-

tion is part of a series of distinguished lectures and special events scheduled by the Foundation for fall/

winter 2011-12. For further information visit www.newnancarnegielibraryfoundation.com.

Seating is limited, reservation tickets (free) will be available at the library or Scott’s starting Novem-

Table Manners on Display at Holiday Meals

Don’t let your bad manners get you relegated to the kids’ table this holiday sea-son.

Holiday meals always seem to ramp up people’s focus on dining etiquette and table manners, said Pat Pesci, director of the hotel and restaurant management pro-gram at Kansas State University.

“Typically, Americans don’t sit down and dine together,” Pesci said. “People just don’t break bread anymore; they multitask. Then at this time of the year, you have all these holidays and the large family meals that go with them.”

The holiday meal can bring a lot of stressors into one event: family members who don’t see each other that often; different age groups; different opinions; uncommon and varied cuisine; and fancier tableware.

Pesci said it is important to ask your host if you can assist in any way, and also to ask, rather than assume, where you will be sitting.

And once you’re seated, it’s standard to wait until everyone has food before you begin eating, Pesci said. When faced with uncertainty about which of your multiple utensils to use, start at the outside and move in toward the plate.

Another pitfall during holiday meals is the conversation.

“Holiday meals often last an hour or more,” Pesci said. “And while you should eat slowly, it doesn’t take that long to consume food. Because so often we eat in front of the television, many people aren’t used to carrying on lengthy conversa-tions while eating.”

Remembering not to talk with your mouth full is one thing. Knowing what to talk about is quite another. Pesci said it is best to avoid topics that might make people uncomfortable, such as politics, religion, sex and controversy. Great conver-sation starters are more neutral, like sports, weather, professions, travel, movies and where people are from.

“It is important to get everyone involved,” said Pesci. “We often miss out on talk-ing and listening to people and finding out about them. Holiday meals are a great time for that.”

When the meal is finished, it’s polite to place your napkin to the left of your plate and push your chair in when leaving the table.

Finally, one of the most important tips is to never correct someone’s etiquette at the table.

“Correcting someone else’s manners in a public setting is rude. That’s one of the No. 1 rules,” Pesci said.

5 Easy Ways to Update Your Interior

As a Home Staging Consultant, I often have clients that are eager to do what it takes to sell their property, but just like the rest of us, their budget is tight. However there are some easy and inexpensive changes that one can make to turn a home from outdated and boring to modern and currant.

Below are some of the easiest areas to update without breaking the bank.

Lighting - Lighting professionals often use the term "layering" when referring to lighting design. The overhead lights that came with the house are necessary to function in a space but leave little to be desired. Adding table and floor lamps will enhance the feel of the room, offer flex-ibility in setting mood and generally make for better illumination for how the space is used. Lamps can be found everywhere from local discount stores to furniture stores and I've seen them starting as low as $10 - $15.

Artwork - Bigger is often Better. One large painting makes a statement and keeps things simple. It can also call attention to the focal point of the room which is often the fire-place. Check Ross, TJ Maxx and Target for good prices on large artwork.

Throw Pillows - Those original throw pil-lows that came with your living room set have seen better days. Give them away and go buy some fun, bright pillows to change the entire mood of your space. Starting at $8 and up, it's one of the easiest ways to update your furniture.

Floor Rugs - 5 x 7 is not big enough! I know that is usually "what's on sale", but save just a little while longer and go for the 8 x 10. A good rule of thumb is to leave at least 18" of bare floor space around and area to make the room look in proportion. Of course there are many exceptions to this “rule”, but it will help get you started. One inexpensive solution is to go to a store such as Lowe’s or Home Depot and purchase an 8 x 10 piece of carpet that has been surged around the edges for around $88.

New Bedding - That tired old bedspread or comforter has probably seen better days. It's time to update and put new energy in those bedrooms. I know it seems frivolous, but a "bed in a bag" can be purchased for as little as $20. Watch the sale papers and purchase the when they are on sale. January is usually a good month to find great prices on new bed linens.

Whether you are selling your house or not, you work hard and deserve to have a beau-tiful space to retreat too at the end of your day and the above suggestions will help get you started without having to dip into your 401K.

NuLink Supports Coweta County School System

CEO presents check to aid athle c departments

Newnan, Georgia. November 2, 2011—NuLink CEO Dan Shoemaker made a special presentation to Dr. Marc Guy, Assistant Superintendent for Administrative Services of the Coweta County School System, today to support the athletic departments at Newnan, East Coweta and Northgate High Schools. The check is part of a promotion the local cable provider ran from Au-gust through mid October where it donated $20 to a local high school for every customer that signed up for a new service. Each new customer was asked to desig-nate which school would receive the funds.

“Today we are proud to present this check for $10,540 dollars to Coweta County Schools to support their ath-letic departments,” said Shoemaker. “We are thrilled to have this opportunity to give back to our commu-nity. It was amazing to see the tremendous outpour-ing of school support from more than 500 new and upgraded subscribers.”

The money raised from the NuLink promotion will be distributed to the three high school’s athletic depart-ments. According to Dr. Guy, “These funds will go to good use supporting our athletic departments. We are truly grateful to NuLink for including us in this promo-tion as well as their customers who chose a school to support. This is a perfect example of how businesses and the community can work together.”

NuLink is Coweta County’s leading provider of video, high-speed Internet and phone services for residential and business customers. For more information on Nu-Link visit www.nulinkdigital.com or call 770-683-6988.

Doghouses in the subject line.

If you have a doghouse that you no longer need, please consider donating it to Georgia Heartland Hu-mane Society. Due to limited transportation resourc-es, we are not able to receive large wooden doghouses. One of the best materials to place in a dog house to help a dog retain warm, is wheat straw. Clothing or man made materials draw moisture from the air and retain dampness within the doghouse. If you would like to donate wheat straw to place in the doghouses, that would be wonderful. Thank you for helping.”

Don’t Deep Fry Yourself on Thanksgiving Day

Many turkey lovers agree that deep frying is the best way to produce the most flavorful and moist version of the traditional centerpiece of the Thanksgiving meal.

However, if you choose to go the deep-frying route, you have to be careful that the bird isn’t the only thing that gets fried on Thanksgiv-ing Day. More than 141 serious fires and hot-oil burns have been reported from the use of turkey fryers in the past decade, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

“If a turkey fryer is used the way it’s supposed to be, and by people who are not impaired by alcohol or drugs, I think they’re fine,” said Dr. Thomas Esposito, chief of the Division of Trauma, Surgical Critical Care and Burns in the Department of Surgery at Loyola University Chicago’s Stritch School of Medicine. “Injuries from turkey fryers are rare, but when they happen to you or a family member, that doesn’t matter -- they’re very devastating.”

Esposito said if you’re planning to use a turkey fryer, heed the following safety tips:Keep the fryer in full view while the burner is on.• Keep children and pets away from the cooking area.• Place the fryer in an open area away from all walls, fences or other struc-• tures.Never use in, on or under a garage, breezeway, carport, porch, deck or any • other structure that can catch fire.Slowly raise and lower the turkey to reduce splatter and avoid burns.• Never cook in short sleeves, shorts or bare feet. Cover all bare skin when add-• ing or removing bird.Protect your eyes with goggles or glasses.• Immediately turn off fryer if the oil begins to smoke.• Make sure the turkey is completely thawed, and be careful with marinades. • Oil and water don’t mix, and water can cause oil to spill over, creating a fire or even an explosion.Don’t overfill the fryer with oil. Turkey fryers can ignite in seconds after oil • hits the burner.Keep a fire extinguisher for oil fires close at hand, and know how to operate • it.Never use a hose in an attempt to douse a turkey-fryer fire.• If you’re burned, seek immediate medical attention.•

Taking care to not become a victim of a fire and serious burns also applies inside the home on Thanksgiving Day, the leading day for cooking fires, with three times as many as on an average day, according to the National Fire Protection Association.

Sandra Johnson is NCAA November Artist of the MonthSandra Johnson is a local, self taught artist who began painting about three years ago after visiting the

High Museum with her daughters. After years of saying, “I wish I could paint,” she just decided to start. So with a basic set of paints, a few canvases and a child’s easel found at a garage sale, Sandra gave it a try. She’s been painting ever since and it has certainly become a passion for her.

Sandra loves to experiment and has done work in oils, pastels, collage and acrylics. Her medium of choice is, however, acrylics because they dry quickly and are very versatile. Sandra has done still life, land-scapes and abstracts. Currently, she is exploring the “many faces of women” using acrylics and collage.

Completely by accident, Sandra, after going to a workshop on water colors, tried the techniques learned at the workshop in the “Paint” program on her computer. After playing with images, she came up with her ‘Puter People.’ She states that they exist in cyber space and are purely energy. While having no faces they express their personalities through their bright clothing and exotic hair styles. Subjects range from tiny bal-lerinas to chefs to “just the guys.”

Sandra lives in Newnan with her husband, David, and their spoiled rotten English Bulldog, Sophie. She is currently studying with Myra Harden, who has been a terrific encourager and inspiration to her. Sandra received a Merchant’s Choice Award for a painting displayed at Espresso Lane in Newnan. Sandra will be exhibiting works at NCAA functions and at local sites.

The Newnan-Coweta Art Association. NCAA meets the third Thursday each month (from September through May) at the Harriet Alexander Art Center on Hospital Road at 7:00 p.m. Visitors and new members are welcome. An art demonstration is presented each month. Come and join the fun!

This Thanksgiving holiday with its blessings so grandShould serve to remind us of the joys at handThe friendships we treasure, our families dear

The love we’ve been given and shared, year to yearThe food at our tables, where many have none

The dawn of each morning beneath the bright sunThe dreams that we carry; the warmth in our hearts

That bring us together when we are apart.

The walks by the lakeshore as stars light the skyThe joys in the children who quickly pass byThe stillness of nature, the comforts of home

Each blessing the greatest that could ever be knownThe warm, pleasured scents from the kitchen, delight

Arousing the senses near the firelightThe wondrous decor of the season to come

Good tidings, best wishes for everyone.

The freedom we hold, so to live peacefullyThe soldiers who serve us, so diligently

The air that we breathe, the flowers we growThe brightness of spring, the coldness of snow

Our sons and daughters, our husbands and wivesAnd the furry creatures who capture our lives –All are blessings we’re given to cherish, always

Yet, especially so on Thanksgiving Day.

Celebrate this time for the beauty aboundBe thankful for all of the blessings you’ve found

For in the end, blessed you will truly be –A soul filled with love, peace and harmony

Happy Thanksgiving, my friends; I am blessed, indeedI am thankful for the love you have shared, selflesslyMay each road that you travel be paved with a smile

Have a wonderful holiday....enjoyed in style!

Winter Container GardeningPorches, decks, patios, and terraces have become parts of our gar-

den landscapes today as well as being extensions of our homes. This other area of gardening demands containers of plants to decorate, add color and interest, screen unwanted views, add privacy, enhance the architecture, or to add fragrance to living areas.

Almost any tree, shrub, perennial, annual, or vine can be grown in a container — at least temporarily. Deep containers are necessary for larger plants, plants with extensive root systems or plants that will be remaining in the container for several years. All containers must have holes for drainage. Winter containers should not sit in saucers. They would collect water and freeze. Containers may be made of wood, clay, concrete, plastic, ceramic, fiberglass, lead, cast iron, aluminum, metal or stone. Used items can be re-purposed: old chairs, baskets, tea kettles, tea cups, large tin cans, watering cans, buckets, boots, flue tiles, wheel barrows, concrete drain pipes, bales of hay, old tires, or even small satellite dishes.

Generally speaking, neutral colors usually work best for the con-tainer’s color. Do try to coordinate colors and styles with the plants to be used and architecture of the house. Remember to choose deep-er, larger, and more weather-resistant containers for more exposed areas in Winter. Just use your imagination and have fun!

When choosing Winter plant combinations, chose those with simi-

TheArmchairGardener

lar light, water, fertilizer, and soil-type requirements. Otherwise use several separate pots. Have something tall, something rounded and at least one trailing or cascading plant just as you would in a single container. Repetition of one element — color or form or texture — will create rhythm. Let one element dominate and the others have supporting roles. Contrast can be achieved by the choice of the colors or textures or forms. Too much contrast gives a busy or confused look. Balance, scale and proportion matter! Too many or too few plants or too large or too small for the overall amount of the pot size and shape (or vice versa) detracts from the composition. Be sure to use a container mix in pots. Drainage is a top priority!

A number of good, reliable color combinations exist or you may create your own palate. Among the tried and true are: blue and or-ange, red and green, silver and white, yellow and purple. Greens may be blue-green, true green, grey-green or yellow-green. Many plants have variegated leaves or foliage. White, yellow, cream, burgundy, pink, orange, etc. on leaves adds interest, contrast, or repetition.

Plant selections are endless. Of course, pansies immediately come to mind for Winter containers. Actually, violas are even better be-cause they can stand colder temperatures and lower light. Also sev-eral color combinations of flowering kale and cabbage make good selections. Other good Winter plant choices are: all the ivies, senecio, Dusty Miller, Lamb’s Ears, dianthus, heather, liriope, parsley, rose-mary, euonymus, leucothoe, nandina, camellias, sasanquas, osman-thus, holly, boxwood, conif-erous evergreens.

Winter containers should be covered in extreme cold, but uncovered in strong sunlight. Containers could be moved to an even more protected area, or, possibly, brought into an unheated garage or porch temporarily in extreme cold.

This is a letter from The Cleaning Depot Inc. to Newnan, Coweta County and surrounding areas.

THE CLEANING DEPOT

This year we are celebrating 30 years in business ~ first coming to this area from a small farm town in Illinois and finding everyone so friendly and appreciative of our cleaning business.

Miss Pike would have us clean her carpet and then take us out for lunch. She is just one of the very sweet people we have met through the years.

Thank you to everyone who have helped our cleaning business to grow.It has been a lot of hard work, but a family business and we are still

working hard together. As we grew from just R & L, M & S, we had to hire employees and to this day still have a number of loyal employees who started with us 25 years ago. We lost our floor man, J.T., who was a good friend and employee. He died of a heart attack after 20 years of service.

We do appreciate all our customers and still strive to give you the best service that we can.

Thank you to dedicated employeesTony Williams and Julia Ware 25 Years. Lilly Jennings, Lavaughn Allan,

Legal Briefs: Bill Stemberger

Distracted driving in Georgia is dangerous. The United States Department of Transporta-tion has recently published its statistics regard-ing the distraction of drivers on our roadways.

In 2009, 5,474 people were killed on U.S. roadways and an estimated additional 448,000 were injured in motor vehicle crashes that were reported to involve distracted driving. Distracted driving comes in vari-ous forms such as cellphone use, texting while driving, eating, drinking, talking with passengers, as well as using in-vehicle technologies and por-table electronic devices such as iPods. Distracted driving amounts to over sixteen percent (16%) of all total fatalities on our roadways. What is most disturbing is the fact that driver distraction continues to increase. In 2005, ten percent (10%) of all fatalities were associated with driver distraction. The number of distracted drivers has increased to slightly over sixteen percent (16%) in 2009. It is also estimated that in 2009, twenty percent (20%) of all injury crashes reported involved distracted drivers.

The under-twenty age group has the highest proportion of distracted drivers involved in collisions. Of course, this is associated with cellphone use, texting, and use of portable electronic devices. In our hustle and bustle world, people at times feel the necessity to text or dial their phones while driving. It is important that everyone, including teenage drivers, re-alize that a simple distraction such as reading a text can cause serious problems.

As recommended by the Department of Transportation, please make sure that you are pulled off the roadways when you are calling, reading or receiving texts.

If you or anyone in your family have been involved in a vehicle wreck, please call Stemberger & Cummins, P.C..
