The Coweta Shopper reserves the right to accept or reject any advertising as we feel is in the best interest of our publication.

I recently attended an open house celebration at the newly com-

pleted Ansley Park Health and Rehabilitation Center here in

Coweta County. Although we have many high quality health care

facilities here, this is the first in our community dedicated to full ser-

vice, state of the art rehabilitation care. The interior is attractively

furnished as well as being architecturally interesting, and it has a

professional, yet comfortable, feeling of quality. There are over 60

private rooms for those patients in need of staying just a few days

or several weeks. From hip and knee replacements to cardiac and

stroke victims, to speech and occupational therapy needs, their staff

can “get you back on your feet”, so to speak.

I was, however, most impressed by the different therapeutic settings that mimic real life environ-

ment situations. They have set up a mock store with stocked shelves and a cash register. They have

installed a real car (front half only) to help patients learn to get in and out, buckle up, etc. The gym will

help you regain strength and coordination, and there is equipment for pain therapy. And their mock

living room, bedroom and bathroom will help you practice moving around and doing everyday tasks –

things “well” people take for granted.

However …

Just in case I need to be a guest there after my next stroke, I’ll need a few additional items with

which to practice getting back to “my” normal activities. I’ll need a “Mock” weed eater that I can use

for about an hour at a time. (Or I could just go outside and use the real one and maybe work off some

of the bill). A fishing rod and reel to practice casting up and down the halls would be nice, too. And

an old aluminum TV antennae which will rotate, attached to the outside of the building, will help me

re-learn to tune in my favorite TV stations when I get home. But the most important task will be sitting

in front of the steering wheel in that mock automobile with my wife sitting at my side. (No rehab prac-

titioner will be needed for this therapy). My wife will clearly tell me which way to turn, how fast to go

and when to stop. She will also admonish me to keep my eyes on the road and watch the pedestrians.

And she’s so good at it, they may just offer to bring her on as a full time driver rehab “specialist”.

You know, when we are healthy and independent, we may not realize the benefit, indeed the bless-

ing, of being able to move around and do simple tasks in our home or yard, or at work. A facility like

Ansley Park can be a life saver for those of us who have been stricken with an illness or an accident,

unable to move around, or to come and go and to enjoy life as fully as we once did. Although fully

recovered, I have been there and done that.

And it’s not just the Ansley Park facility. In the last few years, Coweta County has experienced many

new and modern health care facilities which, I believe, greatly add to the quality of life for the citizens

in our community.

JoeAn Apology ~ I received a letter from a reader who was offended by my well intended, but, per-

haps, misplaced remarks about the retiring Pope. If even one reader was upset, I sincerely apologize.

Preventing Childhood Tooth Decay is as Easy as 2 Minutes, Twice a Day(NAPS)—Here’s health news you can

sink your teeth into: Dental decay is the most common chronic childhood disease, with more than 16 million kids suffering from untreated tooth decay in the U.S. The mouth is the gateway to overall health, and an unhealthy mouth can be associated with obesity, diabetes and even heart disease. In the U.S., oral disease causes kids to miss 51 million school hours and their parents to lose 25 million work hours annually.

Nevertheless, a survey by the Ad Council found less than half of American parents report that their children brush their teeth twice a day or more.

A SolutionTo remedy that, The Partnership for Healthy Mouths, Healthy Lives

was formed. It’s a coalition of more than 35 leading dental health organizations and, with the Ad Council, they created the Kids’ Healthy Mouths campaign to teach parents, caregivers and children about the importance of oral health and simple ways to prevent oral disease.

Created pro bono by ad agencies Grey Group and Wing in New York, the campaign stresses the importance of brushing for 2 minutes, twice a day.

“The messages in this campaign may seem simple but their impact will be felt for years to come,” said Gary Price, Secretary and CEO of the Dental Trade Alliance Foundation. “Most mouth disease is preventable using steps that can easily become a part of every child’s life routine.”

According to the survey, 60 percent of parents with children ages 12 or younger don’t regularly help their children brush or check to make sure they’ve done a good job. Parents also report that, on average, their child spends more than 2 hours a day on such things as playing video games, texting or watching online videos.

The campaign suggests some of this time be used for improving their oral health with public service announcements (PSAs) that poke fun at the things children spend their time doing and highlight that it only takes 2 minutes, twice a day to help maintain a healthy mouth and prevent future oral pain. Other PSAs feature Elmo from “Sesame Street” or Tooth—the Tooth Fairy from the film “Rise of the Guardians.”

Music To Brush ByFor entertaining two-minute videos to play while children brush their

teeth, parents and caregivers can go to www.2min2x.org (available in English and Spanish and in a mobile version). There’s also messaging on Facebook and Twitter.

Home Improvementsas Tax Deductions?

Q: I heard somewhere that I can deduct my home-improvement costs from my taxes. Is this true? -- Overtaxed in Wisconsin

A: The cost of certain home improvements can be deducted on your tax returns, but not all of them. And the rules for such deductions can change, so the deduction you are eligible for one year may not be available the next.

Some of the more compelling deductions are energy tax credits. For example, if you install solar panels or a solar water heater, geothermal heat pumps, a small wind turbine or fuel cells in your existing or new home, you may be able to get a one-time, 30 percent tax credit on the cost of such systems (including labor and installa-tion costs).

If you install energy-efficient windows and doors, you may be able to take a one-time cred-it of 10 percent. Installing new insulation or putting on a new roof also can qualify you for the credit, if the materials meet specific ener-gy-efficiency guidelines. These are detailed by the Internal Revenue Service, and you can visit its website or talk with a tax preparer to learn more.

If you make home improvements for medical reasons -- such as installing wheelchair ramps and handrails, lowering cabinets, etc. -- you may be able to deduct those improvements as medi-cal expenses. Be careful about what you claim,

however. “(M)aking a residence wheelchair ac-cessible qualifies, but adding a sculpture gar-den does not,” says a TurboTax guide.

Other deductions may be available, but read the tax guidelines carefully and fill out forms properly. Tax software or a professional tax preparer can help you figure out which credits or deductions you can take.

HOME TIP: Interested in installing an energy-efficient system such as solar panels? Get an installation estimate from a certified, licensed installer and ask about tax credits.

The History of Prom CorsagesProm attire consists of wear-ing gowns and tuxedos in the style of the season. Promgoers pore over their wardrobe so they will look their best when heading out for their big night -- a party celebrating the cul-mination of their high school careers. One tradition of prom that continues today is the presentation of a corsage to the female attendant.

Corsages have been part of formal wear for centuries. Originally, a corsage was con-sidered to be a small grouping of flowers worn on the center bodice of a dress. It is derived from the French term “bou-quet de corsage,” which trans-lates to bouquet of the bod-ice. Corsages were commonly worn to weddings because, in ancient times, it was believed that the flowers and herbs placed in the corsage were essential to warding off evil spirits. Corsages were worn by special participants in these ceremonies.

In the 20th century, corsages evolved into something that served as a gift for women attending special social dances, like their high school proms. The corsage worn in this manner was part of the courting process. The gentleman would show respect to his date’s parents, including bringing flowers or a gift. The gentleman would then take a flower out of the bouquet and present it to his date and attach it to her dress.

As prom dresses evolved to feature spaghetti straps or no straps at all, pinning the corsage to the dress bodice was no longer prac-tical. Therefore, corsages soon morphed into small bouquets that were attached to an elastic band. The result was something that could be worn around the wrist. Nowadays, there are various styles of corsages that can be worn at the waist and even in the hair.

Although it is customary to purchase a corsage, gentlemen who are looking to save a little money can construct one on their own. With floral tape and a few rosebuds, a corsage can be put together at a relatively low cost. For dates who are allergic to floral cor-

Around for centuries, corsages have be-come a tradition at proms across the country.

sages, feathers, beads, faux flowers, or crystals can be substituted to make a statement and prevent a sneezing fit.

A gentleman should ask his date what color gown she is wearing to coordinate the corsage with the gown. However, neutral-col-ored blooms of peach, white and pink can complement a number of differed hued dresses.

Many different flowers can be used in corsages. While roses are typical flowers to show affection and love, chrysanthemums, car-nations, birds of paradise, orchids, and lilies can all be used de-pending on budget and style.

Because florists are typically busy come the spring and summer season with orders for weddings, proms, communions, confirma-tions, Mother’s Day, and other special events, it is best to order corsages well in advance to ensure the order is filled on time.

Parties For Kidz“It’s More Than A Business”

Our family business began in Sep-tember 2011 consisting of Tom, Jean-nie, Blake, Ashley, Landon our 8 year old grandson (who chooses the in-flatables and colors before purchase), and Stephen. Our only emphasis is having affordable parties for all chil-dren. We want all children to have a memorable party regardless of family income and we work very hard with our customers in making that hap-pen. We maintain this policy through listening to what our customers want, working out the many options we have to offer and making it affordable. We take to heart making every event a special memory … one a child won’t ever forget it. Something very important to us is to give back our time and business, we do this with all churches, the children’s department specifically. We set up inflatables, bring popcorn machines or any part of our inventory and all we ask is for a donation. We understand how hard it is to raise money for the children’s department, being the children’s direc-tor at our church, we always extend this helping hand to make sure fun reaches all of the children. We have been very blessed through our Lord and Savior ( JESUS) to grow so rapidly and have given all the credit to him. We wish to extend our inventory of fun that consists of multi-party themes, obstacle courses, jumpies, small and big slides ~ dry or wet, snow cones, cotton candy, canopies, tables and chairs. We are ready any day or weekend for a party of fun and we work with our customers if weather conflicts with your plans. We continue to have new items added to our inventory so always check our web-site or just give us a call. Also, don’t forget our biggest feature: free delivery, set up, clean up and pick up. We believe our inventory and work ethics fulfill the wants and needs for all. The best thing about this business, it’s just about fun and this makes it very special to our family.

Thank you, Tom Smrcina

Is Heartworm TestingReally Necessary?

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My vet tells me my dogs have to be tested for heart-worm every two years, even though they take heartworm medication reg-ularly. Why? It’s expensive -- one test times three -- and I don’t see why it’s necessary. Seems like a way for the vet to make money. -- Dog Mom in New York

DEAR DOG MOM: It’s a valid question, but there really is a good answer for why the veterinarian insists on testing your dogs for heartworm.

The reason is that monthly heartworm medications, while billed as “preventative,” work by killing off the microfi lariae (heartworm larvae) that enter a dog’s bloodstream through an infected mosquito’s bite. The medication doesn’t stop mosquitoes from biting your dog; therefore, there’s still a risk of heartworm infection even though it is taking preven-tive medication.

The other reason is that the doctor can’t be 100 percent sure that your dogs are taking their heartworm medication every month. He doesn’t administer the medicine, so -- while you probably are giving your dogs their monthly dosage right on schedule -- he can’t take your word for it. That’s because, as you know, there are some pet owners who don’t give pets their heartworm preventive on schedule.

To reduce the number of heartworm infections, and keep your dogs healthy, the vet has to check them regularly. He does it every two years because it can take several months for an infection to be detected. Some vets test for infection every year, particularly in regions with a high infec-tion risk.

What if the vet detects a heartworm infection? He’ll treat your dog with a much stronger medication to kill the heartworms. The healthier your dog is when treatment starts, the better it will be able to tolerate the treatment.

Send your questions or comments to [email protected]. Did you know mosquitoes can transmit heartworm larvae to dogs, but fl eas don’t? Find out more in my new book “Fighting Fleas,” available now on Amazon.

Put Pep In Your Pet’s Step

(MS) -- It’s clear that we all want what is best for our pets. The

big question is: do we really know what best means when it comes

to feeding them? Petcurean, a leading specialist in this fi eld, says

that a good fi rst step in answering this question is to determine

what they need based on their breed, size, activity level and other

specifi c health concerns. Then select a food for your dog or cat

with high quality ingredients. Take a look at petcurean.com/food-

selector/ for more help. This site offers valuable information to put

the pep back in your pet’s step.

Healthy Snacks For Healthy Kids(NAPS)—If you’re like many Americans, you enjoy a snack two or

three times a day. Snacks are a great way to improve your diet, if they’re balanced. There are many easy ways to bake up good-tasting, more healthful snacks to have on hand. Try these tips from Clabber Girl:

• Add whole grains—such as oats, flax and white whole wheat flour—to favorite treats to get more fiber in your diet.

• Add dried fruit to quick breads, pancakes and muffins; stir mashed sweet potato, grated zucchini or banana into corn bread, waffles and cakes for added vitamins and minerals.

• To reduce sodium in your baked goods, you can use Rumford Reduced Sodium Baking Powder.

• Try this recipe for a terrific healthful snack.

Spring Berry OatcakesMakes about 2 dozen

3 cups old-fashioned rolled oats 2 cups whole wheat pastry flour 1 cup bran 1⁄2 cup almonds 1 tablespoon Clabber Girl Baking Powder 1⁄2 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon salt 1⁄3 cup butter or palm shortening 1⁄3 cup vegetable oil 1 cup applesauce 3⁄4 cup agave syrup or honey 2 eggs 1 cup milk, soy milk or buttermilk 1 tablespoon lemon zest 1 tablespoon orange zest 1 cup blueberries 1 cup dried cranberries, raisins or dates Extra oats and blueberries for garnish

Preheat oven to 375˚F. Line baking sheets

with parchment or use nonstick spray for easier cleanup. Stir together oats, flour, bran, almonds, Clabber Girl Baking Powder, baking soda and salt. Using your hands or two forks, cut in butter, oil and applesauce, till the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. In a separate bowl, whisk agave or honey, eggs, milk and the 2 zests. Combine dry ingredients with wet ingredients and the berries. Stir with a wooden spoon until the dough pulls together. The dough will thicken as it sits for a few minutes and the liquids are absorbed. Scoop dough by the 1⁄3 cupful onto prepared baking sheets. Press a sprinkling of oats and blueberries over the top for a rustic scone look. Bake about 22 minutes or until just firm in the center. Cool on a rack. Store frozen and reheat just before eating.

Making The Most Of Medicare(NAPSI)—If you’re one of the 30 million Americans with a new Medicare card, you may take a healthy interest in how best to benefit from it.

One of the first and most important things to consider now that your new plan is in effect is prescription drug coverage. Perhaps the best way to save on medication costs is to utilize a pharmacy that’s within your Part D plan’s preferred network. Walgreens, for example, is a part of pre-ferred networks with some of the nation’s largest plans, such as Coven-try, Humana, SmartD Rx and UnitedHealthcare.

The benefit to beneficiaries is not only convenience, but cost savings. By using a preferred network pharmacy, you can recognize significant savings on prescription co-pays and medication expenditures.

It’s also important to understand the preventive health services you may need, what’s covered by Medicare and where you can go for these and other services. Immunizations, health tests and annual medication and plan reviews are all available at your local Walgreens, so talk with your pharmacist or plan provider if you have questions on these or other services.

If you take multiple medications, many Medicare Part D plans will cov-er face-to-face annual checkups as well. Your pharmacist will review all your medications, vitamins and supplements, see if there are lower-cost alternatives and make sure you’re taking everything in the right way to get the best possible results. The pharmacist can then call your doctor to discuss any recommended changes, and you’ll receive a Medication Action Plan that you can share with your doctor.

Medicare covers an annual wellness visit at your doctor’s office, or you can visit Take Care Clinics, which are located at select Walgreens. You’ll get a personalized plan to help manage your health and help you make the most informed decisions with no out-of-pocket costs.

Medicare Wellness benefits provide discounts on medications and services including immunizations, screenings for a number of common conditions, as well as education and counseling to encourage wellness and prevent disease. However, according to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, only 6.5 percent of eligible seniors have utilized this benefit. That’s where your pharmacist can be a great resource to help understand what services are covered.

ROAD TO RECOVERY Volunteer Drivers NeededIf you are looking for a great way to donate some of your time, consider be-

coming a volunteer driver for The American Cancer Society’s Road to Recovery Program. This volunteer-based program provides free transportation to cancer patients to and from their treatment locations. You can make a real difference in the life of someone who needs regular cancer treatments. It is hard enough to have cancer without having to worry about how you will get to your appoint-ments.

Being a Road to Recovery volunteer is so easy. And the rewards are great. You can choose how often and what day of the week you would like to drive, and what distance you would be willing to travel. Most patients’ appointments are local in Coweta County. The training is free. Requirements include a good driv-ing record, a valid driver’s license, auto insurance, and a vehicle that is in good working condition.

Join this meaningful program and make someone’s life a little easier. You might find it makes a difference in your own life as well. For more info on becom-ing a volunteer driver, contact Road to Recovery volunteer coordinator, Emily Stastny at 770-378-1616 or email her at [email protected].

Charles Wadsworth & Friends “Farewell” Concert Saturday, April 20th at 7:30 pm.

The date is set! Newnan’s native son and world-famous pianist Charles Wads-worth will return to Newnan to perform in concert in his namesake Charles Wad-sworth Municipal Auditorium on Saturday, April 20th at 7:30 pm. Wadsworth will once again be joined by a group of world-class musicians as they present the much anticipated Charles Wadsworth & Friends concert that has become Newnan’s most prominent cultural event. On the evening of April 20th, the Wadsworth Auditorium will again resound with Wadsworth’s music - including the encore performances of three of Newnan’s fa-vorite, classical artists. Special arrangements have been made by Wadsworth to include these outstanding performers in his “Farewell” Newnan concert. The art-ists include Newnan’s own soprano Courtney Budd, violinist Chee-Yun, and cel-list Edward Aaron. Additionally, Irish baritone Michael Kelly and Korean pianist Ji-Yong will join host Charles Wadsworth. Musically and artistically, this final Wadsworth concert will bring an evening filled with memories and world-class musicians to its Newnan audience.Charles Wadsworth has been returning annually to Newnan with his Charles Wadsworth & Friends concerts since 1993. Originally sponsored by a group of local citizens and, more recently, by the City of Newnan’s Cultural Arts Com-mission, the concert has generated funds used to restore the city’s auditorium named after Wadsworth in 1998. Today the concert continues supporting the ongoing upkeep and improvement of this treasured hall. Concert proceeds have also made possible a series of Master Classes in which the visiting artists share their talents and personal experiences with groups of Coweta County students. With the strong support of the Newnan City Council and a large number of loyal patrons, the restoration of the auditorium was completed in 2008.General Admission tickets for the concert remain budget priced at $20. and will be available after March 15th. Patron tickets for the event, including a post con-cert reception, are also available. Patron inquiries are invited and information is available from Concert Chair John White (770 253 1959).(Note: In view of last year’s “sold-out” concert, early ticket purchases are recom-mended.)

Newnan Theatre Company’s “Driving Miss Daisy” Opens April 11By Joan Doggrell

Alfred Uhry’s “Driving Miss Daisy” opens April 11 at 8:00 pm in NTC’s Black Box theatre. This heart-warm-ing story is directed by Tony Daniel and stars Susan Patterson, Gerald Kemp, and Lamar Payne.

The story begins in 1948, just prior to the civil rights movement. Daisy Werthan, age seventy two, has wrecked yet another car, and her son Boolie hires Hoke Colburn, an unemployed black man, to be her chauffeur. Miss Daisy looks down on Hoke (whom she doesn’t think she needs), and he resents her racial prejudice (which she denies). Spanning a period of twenty five years, the play consists of a series of powerful and often hilarious scenes that illustrate their growing respect and affection for each other.

“I jumped at the chance to direct ‘Driving Miss Daisy’,” said Tony Daniel, Associate Ar-tistic Direc-

tor. “To me it is one of the most accurate portrayals of the modern South that there is. It takes you all the way through the racial divide and shows how that divide began to close when people started understanding one another. It’s a great story about two older people getting past some of their mutual prejudices. I also liked the idea of the story being told by just three people.”

To purchase tickets, and for show dates and times, visit Newnan Theatre Company’s web site at http://www.newnantheatre.org or visit the box office before or after any performance. The theater is located in historic downtown Newnan at 24 First Avenue.

Think FallSpring has ‘sprung’! All the pollen on cars and porches and everything

else, including the dog, leaves no doubt about it. Spring planting fever is induced by all this pollen being breathed - that’s an unscientific fact. So now that we’re all crazed by this fever, it’s time to think Fall. Yes, folks, Fall - shorter days, longer nights, crisp air and glorious colors.

The best time to plan for a beautiful, bountiful blooming Fall garden is Spring. Just as we plant daffodils and tulips and snapdragons in Fall for a lovely Spring show, we also want to plant some Fall favorites in Spring. Now is the time to purchase and plant Japanese anemones, asters, chry-santhemums, salvia, rudbeckia, Mexican sage, Russian sage, pineapple sage, sedum, swamp sunflowers, perennial and annual grasses. The small plants, with proper soil amendments and water and fertilizer, will grow to be lush Fall plants by Autumn.

After chrysanthemums and as-ters are up be sure to pinch them back until July 4th. This will make fuller plants that don’t get leggy. Spring is the time to divide sedums for new plants. Cut the sedums back a couple of times during the Summer for shorter, bushy plants. Cut back swamp sunflowers before digging to divide (if in Fall).

Japanese anemones are a great addition to the Fall plan. They vary in heights and shades of pink. My personal favorite is the ‘Honorine Job-ert’ - a very tall, white-blooming type that has been grown since at least 1858.

Additional suggestions are Joe-pye, solidago, Belladonna-lily, artemi-sia, celosia, China-aster, Lycoris, autumn/crocus, nerine, Liatris, and toad-lily.

Some extra effort now will yield amazing rewards for August through October.

After you have read your Own-er’s Manual and otherwise famil-iarized yourself with the engine compartment, you are ready to check your car’s oil level.

Open the hood so you can see the engine. Locate the dipstick. On newer cars it will probably be a bright colored plastic handle that has a little oil can symbol on it. Pull it out of the tube and wipe off the long fl exible metal strip with a rag or paper towel. Be careful not to get any oil on your clothing or hands or the car itself, it’s messy, and could stain your clothes. After you have wiped off the oil on the end of the dipstick, reinsert it into the tube making sure it goes all the way in. Then pull it out again. At the end of the stick there will be two marks that indicate the maximum level and the mini-

CAR CARE ESSENTIALS Check Engine Oil Level part 2 …

mum level. Oil left on the stick should be somewhere between the two. Brand new oil is the color of honey. Used oil will be black or have a brownish tint. The indicator could be a pair of holes, two notches, a cross hatch design or any of a number of other designs. Your Owner’s Manual will show you what to expect. It will also tell you what type of oil (natural, synthetic, or a blend of the two) and the vis-cosity (e.g. 5W-30) to use. Use what the manufacturer recom-mends. Just like the brand of gasoline you use, the brand of oil is not critical – they are all about the same. But be sure to use the type and viscosity the manual recommends.

Topping up a low oil level is fair-ly easy and not especially dirty; so, many people will do it them-

selves. Buy a quart or two of the recommended oil. Find the oil fi ll tube which is not the same place the dipstick came out of. Add a little oil, then recheck the level and keep adding more un-til the oil level reading is within the marks on the dipstick. Be careful you don’t add too much because overfi lling can do harm and taking oil out is not easy. If your car is older and has begun to use, leak, or burn oil, check-ing it yourself at frequent inter-vals is a good idea. An oil leak in the engine compartment will at-tract dirt and grit. An oil leak on your driveway will be black and slippery. Adding a little bit of oil is a lot easier than doing an oil change. You don’t want to run out of oil or allow your engine to run very long with low oil level as this will cause excess heat, rapid wear, and can even cause metal parts to fuse together. Low en-gine oil gives you no warning until just before it is too late. Af-ter you pay thousands of dollars for a new or rebuilt engine, you will probably be incentivized to learn to check the oil more reli-giously.

Jo e W il l i a m s H omesIn August of last year, Joe Williams fi nished the last home he would build. That project was to be the culmination of forty years of service to over 800 families in Coweta and surrounding counties.

“I was a young man desperate to do something with my life – something which would offer fi nan-cial rewards as well as a sense of accomplishment. I wanted to prove I could be somebody and I wanted people to notice. I read a lot of books about business, customer service and how to orga-nize a plan of action. But nothing in those books prepared me for the real world realities I would encounter once I started. So, for the next forty years, it was two steps forward and one back. But I was headed in the right direction and it eventually worked.”

Early on, Joe found a niche’ in the market providing homes for families of low to moderate income. He would arrange fi nancing with little or no down payment, and the monthly pay-ments were based on the family’s in-come. In the early days, those homes were of basic design, usually three bedrooms and one bath. But they

were well built and most were brick. The City of Newnan’s urban renewal program once provided the company with the opportunity to purchase several square blocks of newly developed lots for about $1,000 each. That project lasted about three years and some of the original families are still there today.

“I think that overall most of my customers were quite happy with their homes. I certainly made my share of mistakes, but I always tried to make the correction and do the right thing. There was, however, a hand full of people I was unable to please, no matter what I did. I suppose they, and I, were just not a good match and I’m sorry for that. But it always felt good when a prospective customer would say, “you built my family’s home when I was a child and I want you to build mine now.”

The home building industry has always been the hardest hit when the economy is ailing. But no one was prepared for what it would go through in this “Great Recession” which has touched nearly everyone for the past few years. When most home builders were packing up and leaving town, Joe Williams Homes remained in business, although serving fewer buyers. So, with an owner advancing in age and no one in line to take the helm, this forty year old business has proudly come to its end.

Keep On Staging …Spring is here and it is peak real estate selling time.

Realtors are singing a different tune than they were a few years ago. It was a buyers’ market then. Buyers had their choice of properties from foreclosures to reduced prices on homes that should have sold for much more than they did. However, the real estate market seems to be slowly correcting itself.

Before AFTER

Overall, signs are pointing toward a healthier real estate market for 2013. Now experts are saying there is insufficient inventory and that we’re transitioning into a seller’s market in much of the country.

Does this mean that we don’t have to stage our homes to sell anymore?

I say NO! KEEP STAGING YOUR HOUSES! (of course I would say that)

You may argue now that there is less inventory on the market, you don’t have to do all the work you would have had to do a year or so ago. It may be easy to fall into a “take it or leave it” mind set. Be careful! Don’t be fooled into a false sense of security by this news.

Buyers are savvy and most will pay more money for a move-in ready house. Today’s buyers are smart, they shop around for the best deal and they are willing to wait for it. They don’t want to put all their savings into down payment, closing cost and moving expens-es and have a “honey-do” list after they purchase.

They are still going to start home shopping via the internet at Multi List Sites and if they don’t have amazing photos and plenty of them to see, they will eliminate these unprepared houses before they are even considered.

So keep on staging your houses to sell! If you need any help or advice, you know who to call.
