THE PRESIDENT OF THE PHILIPPINES
FORTUNATO T. DE LA PEÑASecretary
On behalf of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), I wish to welcome everyone from all walks of life to celebrate the success of Filipino scientists at the 2019 National Science and Technology Week (NSTW).
In keeping with the general theme “Science for the People: Enabling Technologies for Sustainable Development,” this year’s NSTW—together with the Regional Science and Technology Week (RSTW) celebrations - seeks to draw attention to scientific knowledge and technological applications impacting on the lives of Filipinos through the kind of development that can bring about positive, meaningful, and sustainable change.
The 2019 NSTW is the DOST flagship event, and it is expected to gather the country’s leading scientists, researchers, educators, and stakeholders to interact with investors, entrepreneurs, industry representatives and professionals leading to meaningful partnerships to bridge the S&T knowledge base and the people and organizations which it ultimately serves.
The NSTW celebration has the noble intention of harnessing the power of innovative technological ideas and concepts to power the Philippines toward new, boundless opportunities to solve longstanding societal problems. I therefore invite the public to come and take a close look at how far Philippine S&T has come and become more informed with the key role of S&T in achieving economic development and a just and peaceful society.
Once again, I welcome everyone to the 2019 National Science and Technology Week and the series of Regional Science and Technology Week celebrations.

Welcome to the 2019 National Science and Technology Week.
As we enter the era of the 4th Industrial Revolution, the demand of society has become more sophisticated that requires innovation to a level that matches people’s dreams, aspirations, and expectations for a better life.
This year’s celebration of the 2019 NSTW embraces the theme, “Science for the People: Enabling Technologies for Sustainable Development”.
Grounded on the premise that science, technology, and innovation are the drivers of socio-economic development and inclusive growth, the Department of Science and Technology has since strategically postured itself, including the 18 attached agencies and 16 regional offices to work in unison towards creating enabling technologies that empower the people to create their own future.
Our Exhibit Clusters focus on different technologies that benefit our people and society, and contribute to the attainment of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
The entire DOST system, through interactive exhibits, fora, and seminars present innovative knowledge, products, and services in the areas of Food Security, Energy and Environment, Aging Society, Health and Medical Care, S&T Human Resource Development, Equity and Growth in the Countryside, Biodiversity and Sustainable Use of Biological Resources, Sustainable Cities and Communities, Resilience and Innovation, and International Linkages.
Because science is for the people, the DOST positions itself on the driver’s seat by using the 2019 NSTW as the means to fuel its quest to improve the lives of the Filipinos through science, technology, and innovation.
Be there with us in celebrating the 2019 NSTW and be part of this significant stride towards attaining a culture of science, today, for all of us.

The “Innovation Park: Light the Future” exhibition cluster, led by DOST-PCIEERD, is envisioned to be a futuristic park filled with eye-catching displays that shed a light on DOST-supported technologies that contribute to the attainment of affordable and clean energy (SDG 7), more sustainable innovations, industrialization, and
resilient infrastructure (SDG 9), and responsible consumption and production (SDG 12). This exhibit will raise awareness on the innovations that DOST spearheaded on food security, energy, and environment; engage clients and customers of DOST during the NSTW; and position the Department as a leader in conversations on innovations.
The health cluster exhibit will be represented in the shape of a human body highlighting DOST-assisted and supported technologies, services, and studies that emphasize how these interventions help enhance and extend the quality of life of aging individuals. Interactive activities will also be set in place in certain
areas of the body that will help attendees familiarize themselves with the respective featured technologies.
The STHRD Cluster will host notable outcomes of various programs and projects in sustainable development in the field of STEM education and the development of the country’s pool of science professionals. It will banner SEI’s imake.wemake: create. innovate. collaborate., Innobox: Search for the Most Innovative
Teaching and Learning Resources in Science, Indie-Siyensya Science Filmmaking Contest, and its Scholarship Program; PSHS’s internationally recognized student researches; NAST’s hologram presentations of its national scientists and academicians, and NRCPs Scientific Knowledge Management System. Moreover, outstanding contributions from some education partners such as The Mind Museum, Science Centrum, Emerson, Fetla Multimedia, PASCO Technologies, and C&E Publishing shall be part of ‘an ecosystem of STEM technologies to demonstrate various innovations in improving science education in the country. Hence, the cluster exhibit shall be called “STEM Education for a Sustainable Future.”
The DOST Regional Offices’ exhibit this year will showcase three Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) namely: No Poverty (SDG 1), Decent Work and Economic Growth (SDG 8) and Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions (SDG 16).For No Poverty exhibit, DOST will show how the Community
Empowerment through Science and Technology (CEST) program has contributed to poverty alleviation in the countryside. The Decent Work and Economic Growth exhibit will focus on the 7 SMARTER Principles of SETUP 2.0 with technology demonstrations featuring equipment of SETUP beneficiaries such as CNC laser marking machine, 3D printing machine and form fill seal machine. Lastly, the Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions booth will highlight the S&T initiatives in Marawi Rehabilitation such as livelihood and innovation system support projects, scholarship, and complementary feeding programs for Maranao displaced persons of the Marawi Conflict.ROs’ exhibit will also have a Gamezone area featuring interactive activities for kids, an Innovation Lounge to provide a venue for sharing of innovation best practices, a Wellness Garden introducing the vertical helophyte technology used in water filtration and the Souvenir Shoppe by oneStore where visitors can buy souvenir items created by DOST beneficiaries.
The Cluster will showcase the selected cities in the country which demonstrated innovation, best practices, governance reforms and commitment to promote sustainable development. In the course of the exhibit, it will feature how interdisciplinary science and technology have complemented and facilitated the
accomplishment of the three (3) pillars of the SDG 11 such as people, planet and prosperity, and how SDG 6 has been integrated in the development roadmap of a city. The presence and support of selected DOST attached agencies and regional offices are presented as partners and enablers in making sustainable development more research based, technology driven and collaborative in nature.
The Resilient and Innovation Cluster (RIC) will highlight how the services and R&D projects of DOST agencies such as DOST-Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (DOST-PAGASA), DOST-Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (DOST-PHIVOLCS), DOST-Advanced Science and
Technology Institute (DOST-ASTI), DOST-Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (DOST-PNRI), DOST-Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOSTFNRI) and DOST-Industrial Technology Development Institute (DOST-ITDI) contributes to safer and resilient community, using the Integrated Warning System (IWS) by Milleti and Sorensen (1990).
Science, technology and innovation (STI) are key in achieving the ‘Global Goals’. In fact, STI is a goal on its own as seen in SDG 9, “Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure”. This is not to say that STI is confined in SDG 9 as it cuts across all the 17 goals. For the 2019 NSTW, the International Linkages Cluster will
showcase SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). The exhibit will portray how STI partnerships and Science Diplomacy aid in reducing inequalities and improve the lives of Filipinos through technological cooperation. It will also showcase how partnerships result to mutual benefits for both parties and how it address the challenges of Global Goals. The exhibit will highlight on-going partnerships with DOST with strategic bilateral and multilateral partners. It will also showcase current and future technologies of other countries that can be explored for future collaborations. Scholarships and R&D opportunities with other countries will also be discussed among interested participants in the exhibit.
Sustainable Cities and Communities
CLUSTER 6
This represents the technologies and innovations resulting from R&D efforts for the attainment of Sustainable Development Goals No. 14 - Life Below Water and No. 15 - Life on Land, which deal mainly with conservation and sustainable use of the oceans, seas, and marine resources for sustainable development
as well as protection, restoration, and promotion of sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystem and sustainable management of forest resources while combating desertification and eventually halt and reverse land degradation and the loss of our biodiversity. The exhibits will feature R&D results from the Biodiversity Programs in agriculture, aquatic, and natural resources sectors.
