SPRINGER CREEK RV PARK & CAMPGROUND Senior Athletes in Competition Two West Kootenay senior athletes excelled at the Canadian Masters Track and Field Indoor Championship held the first week in March. Held at the Universiade Pavilion in Edmonton fondly referred to as the ‘Butterdome’ because of its yellow colour, the meet saw 216 athletes compete over three days. Currie competed and won Gold in five running events ranging in distance from 50 m to 1500 m. Currie tied the Canadian Indoor record in the 800 m run with a time of 4 min. 20.78 sec. and set a BC record in the 1500 m running 8.47.14 min.sec. Currie is planning four more events with his next on the last weekend in March at the Van Ryswyk Meet in Kamloops. Both are members of the Zone 6, BC Senior Games team that competes annually at the 55+ BC Games. 2019 PROPERTY TAX Please be advised that the 2019 Property Tax invoices have

now been mailed. This year, property taxes are due by

4.00pm on Tuesday July 2nd. Please don’t forget to sign for

your Home Owner’s Grant, if eligible.

2019 UTILITY BILLS

All accounts with a balance after March 31st have

received a 10% penalty. Unpaid balances at Dec. 31st will

transfer to taxes.

Senior Athletes in Competition Two West Kootenay senior athletes excelled at the Canadian Masters Track and Field Indoor

Championship held the first week in March. Held at the Universiade Pavilion in Edmonton

MEETING NOTES: April 8th & May 13th, 2019

Colin Moss and Leonard Casley presented on behalf of the SDCC Health Committee and Village of New Denver Health Committee. Discussed were the committees’ mandates, accomplishments, opportunities’, and future direction. Councillor Perriere was appointed to the Village of New Denver Health Advisory Committee. Staff provided information on how to become a member of the BC Rural Health Network; Councillor Perriere was appointed as the Council rep and Mayor Lunn as Alternate. Council awarded $1,000 from the RDCK Community Development Fund to the Slocan District Chamber of Commerce Health Committee, as Slocan’s contribution to the committee’s 2019 physician recruitment efforts.

The Village will enter into an agreement with Eric Clough for completion of the Wellness Center Grounds Concept Plan, with input from all parties involved, and that the funds ($2,500) be sourced from the RDCK Community Development Fund.

Council awarded the Slocan District Fire Department, First Responders, and Technical Rescue Society a $100 Discretionary Grant for their 2019 Fishing Derby Fundraiser.

Staff has been directed to contact Telus, to inquire about 5G service and how it may or may not impact the Village in the future.

Council approved a Development Variance Permit application to vary the height requirement as established in the Village Zoning Bylaw, for construction of a detached accessory building, from 15ft to (up to) 21ft, for the property legally described as Lots 5-7, Block 26, 812 Arthur Street.

Council received for information and made public, the Climate Action Revenue Incentive Program Public Reporting Climate Action Survey for 2018.

Staff were directed to work with the members of the Slocan Affordable Housing Commission on a grant application to the BC Rural Dividend Fund, to complete a $10,000 Feasibility Analysis for an affordable housing project in Slocan, as prepared by M’akola Development Services.

Mayor Lunn will attend the New Denver May Days and Silverton Canada Day celebrations.

Staff were directed to draft a Volleyball Committee Terms of Reference for Council review. Staff will investigate acquiring a load of sand for the beach volleyball court.

The Village will write a letter to Community Futures, in support of their Cannabis Business Transition Initiative Proposal; Council will award a $350 RDCK Community Development Grant to support the Initiative.

Staff will work with WEGCSS on submitting an Expression of interest to the Clean Energy Leadership Program for installation of solar lighting at the Skate Park.

Council adopted the Village of Slocan 5-Year Financial Plan (2019-2023) Bylaw and the 2019 Tax Rate Bylaw.

high-tech with support from Columbia Basin

Improved high-speed internet is on the way for 26 communities in the Kootenays.

Columbia Basin Broadband Corporation (CBBC), a wholly owned subsidiary of Columbia Basin Trust, is receiving $4.8 million in provincial funds for two new projects to improve broadband

access in rural areas. Budget 2019 includes more opportunities to deliver better services to B.C. communities with $50 million in additional new funds to expand access to high-speed internet, the largest provincial commitment to connectivity ever made. Local governments, non-profits, community internet service providers and others will continue to have opportunities to access grants to connect British Columbians with high-speed

internet. CBBC will install fibre-optic backbone infrastructure for the Slocan Valley to just outside Nakusp. New fibre-optic lines will enable internet service providers to offer faster and more

reliable services to people throughout the region. To learn more visit
