ESA has adopted a modern approach to manage the Sentinel operations objective: maximise the exploitation of the Copernicus data !

•All data systematically downlinked & processed to quickly generate core products

•Distributed but highly integrated GS relying on Centres of Excellence across Europe

•Continuous evolution and enhancements of GS elements(e.g. reception, processing, archiving, dissemination, information management)

•Increased industry responsibility based on outsourced service-oriented contracts(high-end performance at reduced operations costs)

•Latest ICT and EO technology drawing also from ESA’s own R&D programmes

Sentinel Data Access @ ESA

• ESA offers free access for all users to Sentinel products: most recent as wellas complete long term archive

• Any user can self-register at sentinels.copernicus.eu

• ESA delivers all Sentinel products on 24/7 basis in Near Real Time

(3 hours from sensing) as well as Non Time Critical (24 hours from sensing)ESA Data Hub provides an OPEN SOURCE Web interface

Users can set own scripts to automatically retrieve, filter and download products

Data Hub Server available as open source softwarehttps://github.com/SentinelDataHub/DataHubSystem.

Sentinel Toolbox available as open source software https://github.com/senbox-org

In 2015: on average each product was downloaded 10 times

In 2015 an average of 3 TB of products was generated daily

By end 2016 it is projected that this figure will increase to more than 6 TB a day

In 2015: 30 TB of products have been

disseminated on average a day

It is projected that by end 2016 100 TB of products will be disseminated daily

EO Innovation Europe

Need to introduce complementary data access solutions based on Big Data Paradigm

The “big” questions:

how will EO data be used in 5 years and 10 years from now ?

how can Europe maximise return of public investments with EO satellites(e.g. for knowledge/information creation, socio-economic benefits) ?

Page 12: The Copernicus Space Component · 2019-07-25 · The Copernicus Value-Chain Workshop –Brussels, 26 April 2016 4 ESA has adopted a modern approach to manage the Sentinel operations

EO Innovation Europefunding and enabling governance rules

a common set of enabling governance rules

• Open, non-discriminative access to platforms and resources

• Offer a combination of free, sponsored and pay-per-use services

• Stable delineation of scope for institutional + commercial activities

• Protection of IPR and data

• System and data security

• A clear level of commitment on business continuity

• A participative model for any evolution of the governance rules involving all stakeholders

The EO-Innovation Europe values:

Collaboration, sharing, networked governance, affiliation, “open for business”

Open to multi-source funding initiatives

EO-Innovation Europe is a key concept of the ESA EO Envelop Programme and provides a robust framework for “innovation and science”

an open concept, inviting initiatives of partners at EU, National and industrial level
