Connection Study Environment is a revolutionary software program for the design, verification
and check of steel connections, allowing free component positioning in 3D space.
Developed by Castalia srl and represented by CCS in Greece and French speaking countries in
Europe and North Africa, the software allows the design and the computation of simple to most
complicated 3D steel connections according to several design codes, such as:
Eurocode 3 EN 1993-1-8, British Standards 5950 Limit state, American Standards (AISC-ASD &
AISC-LRFD), Indian Standards (IS 800 WS & IS 800 LS), Italian Standards CNR 10011 (AS & LS),
Russian Standard SNiP.
The software has been continuously developed since the 90’s and it has grown to become a
worldwide unrivaled product.
Superior software solutions for steel and composite structures
Innovation and Expertise
In the domain of steel structures, we
deliver advanced IT products and quality
services for two decades.
CCS, renowned for its prestige and
credibility, has highly qualified personnel
with an accumulated expertise which
originates from multiple sources such as:
 Design, development, support and
continuous improvement of structural
analysis software, which are used in
hundreds of design offices.
 Implementation of hundreds of studies
for steelwork projects of all types and
sizes, which have been erected in
Greece and abroad.
 Installation and support of advanced
software systems to automate the
design and management of
production, in more than a hundred
steel fabricators.
 Implementation of projects for the
certification of new products and
production of industry specific
software for technical support of
structural systems.
 Collaboration with European institutes
of steel structures such as CTICM
(France) and SCI (UK).
 Perennial collaboration with Greek
Universities, such as Steel Structures
Laboratory of NTUA in experiments
and specialized issues of design codes.
 Participation in national and European
research projects and production of
numerous papers for publication in
journals and conferences.
Design and development of dozens of
special applications for large European
organizations that address specific
engineering issues.

Basic working steps:
You have a “typical” connection (as those covered by the Standard) but with non “typical”
loads (out-of-plan bending and shear, torsion, eccentricity, etc.).
You wish to verify the connection behavior outside of the framework given by the Standard
(ex. allow local plastic strains).
You have a non “typical” connection (not covered by the Standard) with “typical” or “non-
typical” loads.
 You have a multi-planar complex 3D joint.

Software for connections design, verification and checking in 3D using FEA
How C.S.E. works:
Import geometry and member forces from
FEA programs or build directly in CSE
(standalone). Available interfaces:
SAP2000, STAAD PRO, RISA 3D, STRAP,
MIDAS, SARGON. Possibility to add more
interfaces according to customers’ needs.
In case of imported finite element global
mode, C.S.E. automatically recognizes the
sets equal joints in the structure, which can
be computed all in a single run, but
considering all the combinations for each
single instance of the joint.
User is free to define the connections in
space by adding the components (plates,
cleats, bolts, welds) rotating them, moving
and shifting them, cutting them, or
modifying them according to his needs.
Take advantage of a set of 786 predefined
parametric connections to quick model
some parts of complex joints.
 Launch the automatic design checks
according to the Standard or choose the
possibility to carry out FEA checks.
“Teach” C.S.E. to include in the verifications
any user customized checks.
Option to choose FEA calculations for
single components, sets of components or
full joints.
 Option to choose linear, nonlinear,
unilateral contact and buckling FEA
calculations.
Display of exchange of forces between
components and sub-components.
Full output listing report in ODT (Open
Office, compatible with MS Word) or ePub
format with results, images, tables, etc.
 Net section results.
 Failure paths for block shear.
 Bearing surface results.Design checks:
Resistance checks of welds and bolts.
 Bolt bearing stress checks.
 Punching shear checks.
 Pull-out checks of anchor bolts.
Slip checks of slip-resistant bolt layouts.
 Bearing surface checks.
 Simplified resistance checks of members
net sections.
 Simplified resistance checks of cleats.
 Block tearing checks.
 Deformability checks.
 FEA checks of single components,
aggregates or whole joints, finite element
models are automatically created and
analyzed (linear, non linear, buckling).
User's checks: user can add further
formulae and C.S.E. automatically includes
them in the checks.
Design results:
Coloured utilisation maps for the whole
joint.
 Stress envelopes for FEA analysis.
