PRAYER ROOM ASSIGNMENTS

FOR JUNE

June 2020

P eople are especially good at speaking out against all kinds of things they find offensive. Sadly, their focus may center on the person, instead of the action. As Christians, with all our imper-

fections and failures, God chose to see us as holy and blameless, Ephesians 1:3-5 says, 3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, 4 even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love 5 he predestined us[a] for adoption to him-self as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will.

God also gives us a choice. Let’s make some good choices too; Forgive Others – Let Christ’s peace rule your heart, Comfort Others – Manifest God’s mercy, Honor Others Above Yourself – Imitate Christ’s humility, Encourage Others – Gain Christ’s treasures and Love Others – Let God live through you as you live in Him.

“Examine and test and evaluate your own selves to see whether you are holding to your faith and showing the proper fruits of it. Test and prove yourselves [not Christ]. Do you not yourselves real-ize and know [thoroughly by an ever-increasing experience] that Jesus Christ is in you–unless you are [counterfeits] disapproved on trial and rejected?” (2 Corinthians 13:5 AMP).

The Worship Choir will soon set a date to start meeting together. Until then, don’t lose heart and keep worshipping the Lord. We are still making plans to sing the Easter musical.

Congratulations to our 2020 Graduates Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge

him, and he will make straight your paths. Proverbs 3:5-6.

World-renowned violinist Itzhak Perlman was stricken with polio as a child. As a result, he wears braces on both legs and walks with the aid of crutches. At concerts, getting on stage is no small achievement for him. He slowly crosses the stage until he reaches his chair. He lays his crutches on the floor, slowly undoes the clasps on his legs, tucks one foot back and extends the other foot forward. Then he bends down and picks up the violin, puts it under his chin, nods to the conductor, and proceeds to play. One fall evening in 1995, while performing at Avery Fisher Hall at the Lincoln Center in New York City, Perlman had to deal with one additional handicap. Jack Reimer, a columnist with the Houston Chronicle, described the scene. “Just as he fin-ished the first few bars, one of the strings on his violin broke. You could hear it snap—it went off like gunfire across the room. There was no mistaking what that sound meant.”

There was no mistaking what he had to do. People who were there said, “We figured he would have to get up…to either find another violin or find another string for this one.”

But he didn’t. Instead Perlman waited for a moment, closed his eyes, and then signaled the conductor to begin again. The orchestra and Perlman played from where he had left off. He played with passion and power. Of course, it is impossible to play a symphonic work with just three strings. But that night Itzhak Perlman refused to know that. You could see him modulate, change, recompose the piece in his head. At one point, it sounded like he was detuning the strings to get new sounds they had never made before. [Excerpted from Craig Larson’s More Perfect Illustrations, Christianity Today International, 2003, p.9]

What a great story about overcoming adversity. We all have our share of that, don’t we? I am reminded now that “graduation” is upon us and that we as a church will be sending some of our own into new life situations. Though we have adver-sity in each life stage we face, there is something to be said for knowing what will come our way. We seem to grow comfortable in fact, in dealing with the adversity that we expect from a given situation. But after the celebrations are over and the last thank-you note has been written, the graduate is faced with the knowledge that life as it was known will never be quite the same again. For some the excitement and possibilities that await spur them on to achieve things that they have only dreamed about until this time. For others the fear of the unknown holds them captive. They tiptoe through life struggling for survival and hoping that they will not be overcome by the next wave of adversity. Whether you have just graduated from school or a stage in your life, let me finish this article with a few words of encour-agement. First be reminded that the life you are living right now is a gift to you from God. Some of us have many years before us, while others have few. Regardless of the number they are to be lived in abundance. That is what Jesus taught us in John 10:10, “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” God does not want us living empty lives!

Second, be reminded that though the troubles you face may seem great, they are never greater than the power of our lov-ing God. That is why the Apostle Paul could write, “We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down but not destroyed” (2 Corinthians 4:8-9). Come on now can I get an “A-men.” Let’s go a step further… “Hallelujah” seems to be a more appropriate response. There, I feel better now. Do you?

Finally, heed the words that the Lord shared with Joshua as he took over the leadership position vacated by Moses. In Joshua 1:9 the Lord says, “Have I not commanded (italics mine) you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” Holding on to these truths will empower us to “refuse” to allow adver-sity to keep us from accomplishing what God has in store for us each day. He loves you. So do I.

Press On, Pastor Greg
