A MESSAGE FROM RABBI LINDA JOSEPH Hillel and Shammai were two rabbis at the turn of the last century BCE and the
first century CE. Shammai was known for wanting to maintain tradition. Hillel
was known for being compassionate towards people and their practice. Both
rabbis had their disciples, who became known as the House of Hillel and the
House of Shammai, and who followed the philosophies of their founding rabbis.
A famous Chanukah teaching from these rabbinic sages reads: “The House of Shammai held that on
the first night eight lights should be lit, and then they should decrease on each successive night, end-
ing with one on the last night; while the House of Hillel held that one should start with one light and
increase the number on each night, ending with eight.” (Babylonian Talmud Shabbat 21b)
There are two reasons given for Shammai’s argument to decrease the lights over the eight days of
Chanukah. The first reason is we count down how many days of Chanukah are left so we know
how many days are ahead – 8,7,6,5….
The second reason attributed to Shammai is based on his traditional bent. He argues that Chanukah
is a replacement festival for the eight-day festival of Sukkot, which the Maccabees could not observe
as they were fighting the Seleucids. On Sukkot, in the Temple, the sacrificial bullocks were de-
creased in number over eight days. So too, we decrease the lights in number over these eight days. Hillel argues for the increase of lights from one to eight over the eight days. Why? Because in mat-
ters of holiness we only ever increase. Hillel wanted people to know that aspiring towards greater
holiness is something we can all do.
Of course, you know whose opinion prevailed. Today we light one candle on first night, two candles
on the second night through to the final eight candles on the eighth night. We abide by the opinion
of Hillel – in matters of holiness we always increase.
The concept of increasing holiness is central to Chanukah. The word Chanukah comes from the
Hebrew word “to teach” or “to dedicate.” In applying ourselves to learning more about Judaism and
in committing ourselves to increasing our Jewish practice we are, in fact, bringing greater holiness
into our lives and the world at large.
As you light the Menorah over the next eight days, take some time to think about how you and
your family can increase in holiness – perhaps share a teaching or think of a Jewish practice that you
would like to try, in order to “rededicate” yourselves to Jewish tradition in a meaningful way. Use
these eight days of increasing light and increasing holiness, to feel your way to increasing Jewish light
and holiness in your own household.

A MESSAGE FROM NINA PACHINO,
DIRECTOR OF POSNER JEM Chanukah starts early this year, but we have put together lots of fun and family-
friendly ways to celebrate with Har Sinai! On Friday, December 7 beginning at 6:15
p.m., we will be having a Chanukah themed dinner open to all congregants. The cost
is $18 per person. Kids 13 years old and under eat for free. If you can’t make it to
dinner, you are still welcome to join us for Chanukah Shabbat Rocks beginning at 7 p.m.. Make sure to
bring your menorah too, because we will be lighting the candles together and singing Chanukah prayers
and songs. A delicious ice cream sundae Oneg will be the ‘cherry on top’ of this amazing evening. Please
RSVP for the dinner portion of this event (see email listed at the end of this article).
The next day, Saturday, December 8, I hope you will join us for a very magical Shabbat. Morning ser-
vices will begin at 10:30 a.m. in the Myerberg Chapel led by Rabbi Joseph, Cantor Gerber and several
students from Posner JEM. Following services we will move to the sanctuary for a Living History Char-
acter performance about Harry Houdini, brought to us by the Jewish Museum of Maryland. We will
learn all about his life and art with a fun and interactive performance and magic show. Afterwards, a
traditional Saturday morning Shabbat lunch will be served for all who attend. RSVP is required, but this
program is free.
The magic of Chanukah is upon us and I hope you will celebrate this festive holiday with your friends at
Har Sinai! Note that this weekend program replaces Posner JEM’s usual Sunday session.

A Message from Kenneth Bell
President, Har Sinai Congregation
Dear Congregants,
I would like to wish all our members a very Happy Chanukah. I hope it is a joyous time for you and your families. Please try to join us for the Shabbat Chanukah Services, Dinner, and Houdini Perfor-
mance on December 7-8. Our Worship Committee, Clergy and staff have a great weekend planned
and you wouldn’t want to miss any of the fun.
As I am sure most of you are aware, I assumed the role of President as of November 16, 2018. Since
that time, we have had one Board meeting and one Executive Committee meeting, and I can assure
you that the leadership of our Congregation is working very hard in planning for the future. Certain-
ly, a key part of the future is related to our Clergy. Regarding looking for our next Rabbi, we are fi-
nalizing our application to the Central Conference of American Rabbis (CCAR), which will be submit-
ted the first week of December. As indicated during the Future Committee Congregational meeting
held November 11, we are planning on hiring an interim Rabbi for the next two years, which covers July 1, 2019 to June 30, 2021. As part of this process we are also forming a Rabbinic Search Commit-
tee. We continue to wish Rabbi Joseph well in her search for a new Rabbinic assignment. Regarding
the Cantor position, we have opened discussion with Cantor Gerber with respect to extending his
contract through June 30, 2020.
As you will also see in this edition of The Connection (see p. 11) there is an article from Anne Ber-
man indicating that in addition to resigning from her position as President, she and Barry have re-
signed from the Congregation. One of the many programs that they generously supported was the
music (choir and instrumental music) for the High Holy Days. Since we will not have their support in
the future, we have opened a special giving fund for the High Holy Day Music Program. Please consid-
er making donations to this fund so we can continue with the wonderful choir and musicians we have
had in the past.
Finally, in my role as President of Har Sinai Congregation, you have my commitment to being fully
transparent in all actions of the Executive Committee, the Board of Trustees and the Future Commit-
tee. I also want to make sure that you are all aware I take on this position with a fully open-door pol-
icy. If you have any concerns or questions, please contact me. My email address is krbell@HarSinai-

Tuesday between 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. and you are more than welcome to stop by and say hello.

A Message from Valerie Thaler, Ph.D.
Temple Administrator, Har Sinai Congregation
Dear Congregants,
I am not sure how we got to December so quickly. The year has gone remarka-
bly fast. I now have had this position at Har Sinai for about 8 months, and have thoroughly enjoyed
getting to know so many of our members. I also love our new staff members. Sydney King brings a
calm, warm presence to the office each day; Nina Pachino’s enthusiasm for Jewish learning is conta-
gious. Hahna Samuel has brought new life to our youth programs.
A hearty Mazal tov to Ken Bell as he assumes the presidency of Har Sinai, and thanks to Anne and
Barry Berman for all they did for Har Sinai Congregation. I wish them all the best.
This month I join other parents of 7th graders in beginning the plans for my child’s bat mitzvah. I am
so thrilled to be able to work with my amazing colleagues, Rabbi Joseph, Cantor Gerber and Lois Ad-
elberg, who will coach our daughter Sabrina as she prepares for this special day.
I always imagined my father coming to Owings Mills on that day next June and visiting Har Sinai for
the first time. He was so happy I found this position. Unfortunately, that won’t happen. Many of you
know that my dad, David Sandler, died about a month ago, and indeed the outpouring of support I
have received since his stroke in October has been overwhelming.
The 30-day period of mourning, called “Shloshim” (Hebrew for 30), is almost over. It is customary at
the end of this period to study Jewish texts to honor the memory of the individual who has died. I
invite all of you to join me for Erev Shabbat Services on Friday, December 14, at which time I will be
teaching a few modern Jewish texts which speak to one of my father’s central values, which was sanc-
tifying every day moments. I wish to thank Rabbi Joseph and Cantor Gerber for adjusting the service
a bit to allow me to do this.
My dad had the ability to find pleasure in parts of life that many of us tend to take for granted. It
took very little to make him happy, He taught us to appreciate what we had. In an age when we are
constantly being encouraged to seek an “upgrade” to be satisfied—a newer iPhone, nicer clothing, a
fancier car, a better computer—my dad found joy in reading a great book, spending time with his
family, seeing my mother smile or holding her hand. Even once Mom entered the later stages of Alz-
heimer’s Disease—when she could no longer speak or feed herself — dad found ways to cherish mo-
ments of eye contact, engagement and brief signs of recognition. These were “enough.”
It brings me comfort, and helps me honor my father, to share some of his wisdom with you. Join me
next Friday for this special tribute to him. Until then, I wish all of you a joyous Chanukah. I hope to
see many of you next Shabbat at our temple Chanukah celebration.

What a great time we had at the Brotherhood drop-in event last week! Twenty-one
of us enjoyed half-priced burgers and great conversation at the Iron Rooster.
We were pleased to have co-sponsored the breakfast on December 2 with the WoHSC. Wonderful
speaker and food.
On Sunday December 2, Brotherhood also cooked and served hot dogs, potato latkes and snacks for
the Youth Group Chanukah party. The kids had a great time.
Brotherhood Fundraiser to Support Posner JEM Religious School Recently Nina Pachino, Director of Posner JEM and Family Programs, was speaking with some JEM par-ents about the many different techniques and applications students utilize in learning. Afterwards, mem-
bers of the Brotherhood Board spoke to Nina about the JEM program and what we could do to en-
hance it.
Nina shared the following: “I believe that adding a classroom set of tablets would really enhance the school program and offer another tool for teaching Hebrew, Torah and Jewish values to the students of Posner JEM. Technology is a huge part of learning in most school programs now and it’s a tool that allows kids to engage with knowledge in a thoughtful, fun and current way of processing and retaining new information. If the school is able to accumulate a classroom set of tablets (10-12 tablets) I do be-
lieve it will be a great learning addition to our program and a selling point for potential families. There are many different types of tablets available for purchase that can be used in our program. So, I do believe that our best option for Posner JEM to get the best experience with this technology would be to get iPads. Also, here is a list of apps that I know to be very good (I vetted them all) and available through Apple (only 3 of them are available on android): Alef Bet Schoolhouse; Gus on the Go; Alef Bet Puzzle; Shalom Hebrew; Kol Yisrael: Batya’s Bubbles and Blessings; Eyal; Shaboom- Values Themed Animated Series; Shazak Parsha: Bible Stories; Sefaria: Torah w/ vowels and translation; Torah Videos
with Alef Bet. The majority of these are free apps too.” Brotherhood wants to help the Har Sinai Posner JEM children and is going to match donations for the
Posner JEM tablet fund dollar for dollar up to $2,000. Our goal is to raise, with matching funds, at least
$4,000 to purchase the iPads and accessories to enhance our students’ learning.
To donate, please either send a check made out to Brotherhood directly to Jason Savage at Har Sinai
Congregation, or contact Valerie in the office and have a donation added to your bill.
Remember that all contributions made before the end of December are tax deductible! Thanks to eve-
ryone in advance for supporting the fundraiser as well as our children’s Jewish learning at Har Sinai!

What’s Up With the Women of Har Sinai Congregation?
December is here and winter is only three weeks away. To those of our congregants who spend
some of the winter in warmer places, the Women of Har Sinai Congregation wish you well.
We are extremely happy with the turnout we had at our most recent Girl’s Night dinner at Pappa’s in
Cockeysville. The meal was sumptuous and the company was delightful. We had people in attendance
who are regulars at our meetings as well as those who are new to our midst. It was an honor for us
to share our time with some newcomers including Lisa Dickler, Cheryl Goldsmith, Suzette Kosoff,
Sonia Samuel and Anne Ulick! We hope to see a lot more of them and others at some of our future
events.
The second Joint Brotherhood/WoHSC breakfast speaker series hosted Elaine Weiss. Although histo-
ry books taught us that suffragettes fought for the right to vote, Elaine explained it in greater and
much more interesting detail. We hope you were there and took advantage of the opportunity to
purchase a copy of her book, as Steven Spielberg has just secured the rights to make it into a TV mov-
ie.
Sistergram order forms were just mailed out and you should have recently received them or will be
receiving them shortly. Please consider supporting WoHSC by purchasing a Sistergram for a friend or
family member who is having a special birthday, anniversary or bar or bat mitzvah between January and
April.

ELLIS ISLAND AND THE STATUE OF LIBERTY

Please join us to visit Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty, both World Heritage sites.
We will be leaving from Har Sinai Congregation at 7:30 a.m. A light breakfast of bagels
and juice will be provided on the ride up to Liberty State Park. Upon arrival at the
park after passing through a security screening (please make sure you are carrying a
government issued ID) we will board the ferry for the short ride to Ellis Island. At El-
lis Island you will be on your own to visit the museum and purchase lunch. Around 2
p.m., we will take the ferry from Ellis Island to Liberty Island. Upon arrival at Liberty
Island you will be on your own again to tour the island. Your ticket will include admis-
sion to the Pedestal level. it is recommended you do this as soon as possible as there
could be a line awaiting access. Around 4 p.m. we will take the ferry back to Liberty
State Park for the return trip. On the return trip a stop will be made to allow you to
purchase dinner. We should arrive back at Har Sinai Congregation around 8:00 p.m.
Cost of $85/person does not include lunch or dinner.

available at both Liberty and Ellis Islands

can be borrowed, free of charge, with the
deposit of a driver's license or another
form of I.D., at the Information Center

A Farewell Message from Anne Levin Berman
Dear Congregants:
In July of 1978, Barry and I moved home to Baltimore after a ten-year period during which Bar-
ry did an internship in Wilmington, Delaware, served as a Captain in the United States Air
Force at Hill Air Force Base in Ogden, Utah, and then spent four years in his Oral and Maxillo-
facial Surgery residency program in New York.
After settling into our new home, the first thing we did was look for a spiritual home for our-
selves, our two daughters and our third child who was due early that December. Our dear
friend, Dede Raderman (of blessed memory) encouraged us to check out Har Sinai where she
and Michael had recently joined. All the rest, as they say, is commentary.
I thought we would spend the rest of our lives as active members at Har Sinai Congrega-
tion. Our parents and grandparents are memorialized there. Our children were raised there.
They had their Bat and Bar Mitzvahs there and their Confirmation pictures are on the wall
there. Their achievements are celebrated with leaves on the tree there. We have prayed there
almost every Friday evening for all of those forty plus years.
As it says in Ecclesiastes, “there is a time to every purpose under heaven.” Now, our time at
Har Sinai has ended. Abraham Lincoln famously said, “A house divided against itself cannot
stand.” In the best interest of Har Sinai Congregation which I have deeply loved for all of these
forty plus years, I decided to resign from the presidency with the hope that the new admin-
istration under Ken Bell’s leadership will be able to bring my beloved congregation back to its
glory days.
Barry and I decided that to better facilitate the healing process that is needed, it is best that we
leave the congregation. I wish Har Sinai only the best. I hope there is another 176 years of
legacy in the history books to treasure. I am only sad that Barry and I won’t be there to share
it.

A great way to commemorate a special occasion
Our own chef Adam Unger is offering opportunities to celebrate a
special occasion by sponsoring the Friday night Oneg! Set up the
date and menu with Adam via email at [email protected]. The fol-
lowing 10 dates are available for February through June 2019:

Commemorate a Yahrzeit of a loved one; celebrate a birthday or
anniversary, or honor a friend for an award or special achievement.
