The fourth edition of EmTech Asia, co-organised by MIT Technology Review and Koelnmesse, and hosted by the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) concluded on a high note after two days of stimulating and insightful discussions on the latest breakthroughs in science and technology.

Held from 14 to 15 February at the Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre, EmTech Asia was attended by over 600 like-minded individuals with the innovation bug from 22 countries. This year’s line-up of speakers included some of the brightest minds in the areas of artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, smart cities, space exploration, augmented and virtual reality, computing and materials science.

Taking advantage of this convergence of experts and innovators from different fields and backgrounds, MIT Technology Review also hosted a pre-event Solve strategy session, a grand challenge looking at the future of education.

Bringing together an inspiring line up of 48 world leading scientists, entrepreneurs, investors and innovators, EmTech Asia featured speakers from NASA, MIT, A*STAR, Broad Institute, Analog Devices, NVIDIA, GGV Capital among many. Highlights included former NASA Deputy Administrator Dava Newman’s inspiring presentation on bringing humans to Mars, hit CBS-TV series Scorpion Executive Producer and world renowned genius, Walter O’Brien, Discovery Channel science TV shows host, Mike North, who entertained the audience with awe-inspiring presentations. Jenny Lee, world renowned venture capitalist, shared her vision during an insightful fireside chat with Vinnie Lauria from Golden Gate Ventures.

As a prelude to the second day closing session on space exploration technology, the first day of the event closed on a high note with a networking cocktail reception at the ArtScience Museum’s exhibition NASA: A Human Adventure.

For the fourth year, EmTech Asia featured the regional 10 Innovators Under 35 honourees and, for the first time, it also featured the winning teams of the MIT Hacking Medicine Hackathon which took place at SGInnovate before EmTech Asia.

INNOVATORS UNDER 35

MIT Technology Review has been recognising the top young innovators under the age of 35 since 1999. Today, the Innovators Under 35 competition runs in several regions globally, including Asia-Pacific. The regional Innovators Under 35 competition is open to citizens or residents (including students) of Southeast Asia, Taiwan, Australia and New Zealand from a wide range of fields, including biomedicine, computing, communications, energy, materials, web and transportation. 10 honourees were selected by an esteemed panel of judges and were honoured at EmTech Asia where each delivered a three minutes elevator pitch. They automatically become candidates and potential honourees for the global Innovators Under 35 list celebrated in the fall of 2017 at the MIT Media Lab in Boston. MIT Technology Review also showcases these global winners in the September/October issue of the magazine and online at www.technologyreview.com/tr35

Emtech Asia - and Singapore - is definitely the next hub after Silicon Valley that you want to be part of, where great minds meet. Besides the mind blowing convergence of technology, engineering, medicine and entrepreneurship, a vast network of investors has also enabled us to verbally secure a deal worth S$200,000, just after a 3 minute pitch. Yes! This is the next valley! Singapore valley!

TESTIMONIALS

We asked participants what they thought about EmTech Asia. Here’s what they had to say:

EmTech Asia is a great event where you meet amazing people from around the world. We hear from scientists and engineers about technology that could change the world. Topics such as gene editing, artificial intelligence, virtual reality, quantum computing and satellite communications are a few areas covered this year. The best part of EmTech Asia is being with a group of people who want to use science and technology to make a positive impact on humanity. That’s why Singapore is proud to host it.

Steve Leonard, Founding CEO, SGInnovate

This is my third EmTech Asia. I keep coming back because I am a technologist and I want to know what new trends are out there that I should be getting my research teams to take a closer look at. It’s important to understand what’s emerging before it’s already commercialised. We have definitely met some of the right people here. It is good to see the great diversity of basic research, academics, as well as start-ups, VCs, corporates, everyone is here. It is a nice environment to have high-level conversations about what deep tech can do across different industry sectors.

Kelly Anderson, Open Innovation Manager, Procter & Gamble

The range of topics covered is phenomenal, as well as the quality of the speakers. It’s definitely an eye-opener and inspiring to see/hear of the amazing breakthroughs that are happening to make the world a better place.

Erwin Choo, Portfolio Director, Navis Capital

EmTech Asia brings out the best of Asia’s Innovators and their bold and cool ideas.

Tan Wei Hwang, Head of Carrier Services, YTL Communications Sdn Bhd

EmTech Asia brought its audience to the forefront of technological innovations, and presented those ideas in a well-orchestrated manner so that the audience could see how technology is interwoven with lifestyles, and how research institutes and universities are collaborating with governments, corporates and entrepreneurs in improving every aspect of human life. Showcasing ideas from miniscule molecular level all the way to the vast universe within two days, are simply mind-blowing.

Lee Yi Lin, Head of Post Commercialization, Group Technology Commercialization Management, Petronas Research

I have been attending EmTech Asia for the last three years. Ever since that, I’ve made a point that MDV, the biggest venture organization in Malaysia and the company I represent, will participate in this event.

Datuk Md Zubir Ansori Yahaya, CEO, Malaysia Debt Ventures Berhad (MDV)

A great snapshot of some of the most exciting and important technology research being done in Asia. If you had to pick one conference to learn about the hottest emerging technologies across Asia, this would be it.

Marc Hamilton, Vice President of Solutions Architecture and Engineering, NVIDIA

The 2-day event has brought together some very interesting, intriguing and inspiring insights into impactful technologies and trends in the innovation and knowledge economy that all of us should pay attention to. The EmTech Asia experience has been exciting, engaging, educational and enlightening to say the least!

Lim Tit Meng, CEO, Science Centre Singapore

Every year EmTech Asia is raising the bar! The innovations showcased are inspiring and motivate one to think differently.

Prakash Natarajan, IT Director, GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare Pte Ltd

If you want to know across a range of different technologies, exciting things that are happening that may well come to market relatively soon, this is the place to come – EmTech Asia. You just don’t get that out of the deep science conferences.

Daniel E. Hastings, CEO, Singapore MIT Alliance for Research and Technology (SMART)
