Which strategy to release dropsondes ?

Dropsondes were released on demand from Météo-France, using NCAR software facility; CNES set the drop-limit / day

Drop-schedule was set 1 day ahead for maximum 4 balloons at the same time

- Most of the sondes are dropped when coinciding MetOp overpasses + A-train

→ to have simultaneous measurement of the atmosphere from various platforms

- Part of the dropsondes are deployed in meteorologically sensitive areas

- Some in the Weddell Sea (gravity waves)

Data distribution in Near Real Time

Dropsonde profiles were collected by NCAR, QC by Météo-France using NCAR software, MF encodded as meteorological messages and distributed on the GTS

TSEN measurements from gondolas were converted by LMD, MF encodded the data as meteorological messages and distributed on the GTS

Concluding remarks

Concordiasi provided an unprecedented data coverage of meteorological observations over AntarcticaThanks to all participating institutes for this fruitful campaign !

Dropsonde information confirms statistics obtained with radiosondes and provide a more global view

Both dropsonde and gondola information seem to have a positive impact on forecast performance (MF and evaluations at NRL and DWD)

Gondola temperature data at 60hPa shows the largest model errors in areas of strong gravity-wave activity

Most models have problems predicting the lowest level temperatures

More work to come:– More feedback to NWP centres on the monitoring comparisons– Evaluation of meteorological retrievals from IASI spectra

Concordiasi workshop to be held in NCAR, Boulder, CO in October 2011
