The lighthouse moves away from a stern figure in the horizon, to one of light and elegance that bleeds into the landscape made from the carcass of the cruiser. The structure is made from a double skin lattice made with metal from the Concordia and 32 columns that form a cone with a central oculus and a cave like space at the base that is open to the elements and penetrated with natural daylight. This volume sits within the tidal lines allowing it to be flooded twice a day as a challenging reminder of the blighted Costa Concordia and the souls lost on board. Whilst the memorial space must respect the mourning process, it also seeks to create hope utilising the beautiful vistas across the horizon as visitors are bathed in daylight from above and have space, time, and quiet to reflect on the events off the coast of this island. THE CONCORDIA LIGHT

The Concordia Light combines both the functions of a lighthouse as a visual anchor for the seafarer, with the challenging and complex issue of creating a space for mourning, one that honours the 32 that perished in the sinking of the Costa Concordia.

The light source for this structure is created with 32 flood lights that create a single united line that connects with the sky that not onlyperforms as way finder, but as a constant reminder in the landscape that can be seen from afar.
