For centuries, the UKs nest buildings have used decorative covingand cornices to add style and distinction to prestige living areas.

Hand-created by skilled craftsmen, the early classical mouldings weregenerally based on designs from ancient Greek and Roman architecture, with features such as uting, acanthus leaves, dentil and vases.

As architectural styles changed, plasterers found new ways of reectingthis in their cove designs. Gothic and French styling, as well as moreeotic Egyptian, Indian and Japanese, have clearly inuenced covecraftsmen and designers through the years, with perhaps the mostelaborate of all designs, based on modelled fruit, owers and foliage, being created by the early Victorians.

Whilst the time and skill taken to create these elaborate featuresby hand meant that only the most afuent could afford to decoratetheir homes in this way, todays advanced moulding and etrusiontechnology has enabled us to recreate many of the classic styles usingmodern moulding materials, bringing the style and distinction of covingwithin the grasp of all homeowners.

To upgrade a period style home or create a period interior choose fromthe range of classic designs of our Arte Heritage range, or select fromour contemporary range if you want the style and decorative benetsof coving, but with a modern clean line nish.

Regardless of the style you choose, our high quality, high denitioncoves will nish your room to perfection, adding that etra touch ofclass that will make your home feel special.

    PERIOD

    |19

The Arte Heritage range consists of a variety of original

plaster molded designs ideal for recreating periodfeatres or replicating style from a bygone era.The qestion often posed was, Which design is rightfor my property?.

Working with The Modern Interiors Research Centre (MIRC)at Kingston University enabled Artex to produce a guide tothe Artex Heritage range showing which designs suit theperiod of your property.

However, the dating of the designs was more of a challenge

    than the MIRC rst imagined.

Artex would like to thank Professor Anne Massey, ProfessorPenny Sparke and Dr. Patricia Lara.

As part of our work, we welcome co-operation with industry. Our relationship with Artex began with dating their collectionof coving and ceiling roses. The mouldings for these plaster castsdate back to the 1930s, and it was our brief to identify the stylesand periods for each prole. We were able to date styles from the

Victorians through to the modern day identifying egg-and-dart,acanthus leaves, uting, swags and foliage in this fascinatingcollection. The Edwardian revivals of the classical were particularlyintriguing as part of the detective story.

We are sure our ongoing relationship with Artex will produce furtherinteresting projects to help the homeowner or professional, eagerto reproduce an authentic domestic interior. We wish you well with

    your projects!

    INSTALLATION

    INSTALLATION

    INSTALLATION

FIxING COVE TIPS FROM THE PROFESSIONALSSTAGE 1 PREPARING

Before you start, make sure wall and ceiling backgrounds are sound, clean and dry.Remove wallpaper and any loose or aking paint, and wash the wall to remove alltraces of wallpaper and paste.

Draw guidelines along the wall and ceiling to correspond with the edges of the coving, using the dimensions shown for the relevant product and allowing for the thickness ofadhesive to be used. Scratch plastered or painted areas which will be in contact withthe moulding lightly with a sharp pointed tool to give a good key for the adhesive.

    STAGE 2 CuTTING

NB:Artex decorative plaster mouldings aremade from bre-reinforced plaster andshould be handled with care to reduce the

risk of damage. If you are not using pre-cut corner mouldings,

you will need to measure and cut the coveto size.

Always use a Gyproc Universal Cove Mitre Boxwhen cutting internal or external corners, asthis will give you exactly the right angle fora perfect corner joint. Lightly sandpaper anyrough edges to remove burrs.

Remember to keep the cove square in the box,and keep the product supported and levelusing a piece of wood the same thicknessas the base of the mitre box.

There are four different mitre cuts involvedin creating internal and external corners.

Make sure you know which angle is requiredeach time you prepare to cut.

Advice on preparing stop ends andnon-standard angles, and using GyprocCornice Strips, is available on request.

    STAGE 3 FIxING

Start from the most visible corner and work around the room.

Apply a 3mm thickness of Artex Multi-Purpose Adhesive to all surfaces of the cove

that will be in contact with the wall or ceiling, ensuring you apply evenly along the fulllength of the prole.

If using Gyproc LITE Cove Sealant to t lightweight proles, apply an even bead of6-8mm thickness to all surfaces in contact with the wall or ceiling, as above.

Gently press the moulding into position until the adhesive begins to squeeze out, andremove any excess adhesive this can be used as a ller for corners etc. You may needassistance if working with cove lengths of 2 metres and over.

If necessary, support the moulding in position using small nails lightly tapped into thewall or ceiling immediately below and in front of the moulding (do not drive nails fullyhome as these will be removed once the adhesive has dried).

    STAGE 4 DECORATION

After making good all joints, allow to dry thoroughly before applying normaldecorative nishes.

Paper-faced Gyproc Cove products should be treated with Gyproc Drywall Primeror Artex Sealer to seal the surface prior to applying a decorative nish.

    ADDITIONAL INFORMATIONDECORATION AND MAINTENANCE
