Selection is based on character, personal merit and commitment. The ESA Foundation awards numerous scholarships annually. Scholarship applications are submitted to the Foundation's state counselor of the applicant's state of residence. Eligible applicants may apply for only three scholarships. Scholarships are available to any student entering college or returning to college who ranked in the upper 25% of their high school graduating class OR had a minimum GPA of 3.0 OR a minimum score of ACT 22/SAT 1030. Recipients are selected based upon character, leadership and ability, financial need, scholastic ability, and any special criteria set by a donor.

The scholarship list and application form for the Academic Year 2011- 2012 will be available October 1, 2010. Contact above website to obtain more information and application form, or send a self- addressed stamped BUSINESS envelope to the ESA Foundation Office, P.O. State DAR Organizations and local DAR Chapters have their own scholarship programs. For information, interested students should contact the State Chairman of the Scholarship Committee in the state where the student resides. Listed below you will find a scholarship awarded annually by the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution. (Other scholarships given by the DAR are listed by varying deadline dates elsewhere in this Compendium.) ALL REQUESTS FOR INFORMATION MUST BE ACCOMPANIED BY A SELF-ADDRESSED, STAMPED ENVELOPE. American Indian Scholarship - awarded to Native American students of any age, any tribe, in any state. Award based on financial need and academic achievement. Graduate students are eligible; however, undergraduate students are given preference. Applicants must be Native Americans (proof is required), in financial need and have a GPA of 2.75 or higher. This is a one-time $500 award.

. Vice Admiral E.P. Travers Loan: Travers Loan: This program provides an interest-free loan of up to $3,000 to the active duty service member for dependent children and spouses of active duty members of the Navy or Marine Corps personnel, as well as children of Retirees who are undergoing undergraduate training. Loans are to assist with college-related costs and must be repaid in full by allotment within 24 months. Travers application forms are available on the Society's website Mid-October for the following school year. Deadline: March 1

A signature program of the New Jersey-based Siemens Foundation, the Siemens Competition is a leading research-based science and math competition for high school students. The competition awards college scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $100,000. Students may enter as individuals or as members of a team. Open to high school students who are citizens or permanent residents of the United States. Online registration for this year's competition will begin May 1. Interest-free loans available to USA Citizens and Texas residents who have graduated from Texas high schools. Must enroll as a full-time student at a Texas college/university, accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, with the intention of completing requirements toward a first bachelor's degree.

Graduating high school seniors entering as college freshmen are reviewed by high school class rank in relation to SAT/ACT scores. Eligible students must be either in the top 10% of their high school graduating class OR have a minimum 1500 SAT or 22 ACT score.

College level students must maintain a 2.75 GPA overall. Applicants with the above MINIMUM scores will be given consideration for approval; however, this is not to be defined as automatic approval. High school seniors must submit a transcript reflecting SAT/ACT scores and rank in class. Applications and transcripts will be presented to the directors in the order in which they are completed. Funds are limited, and it is advisable to submit requests as early as possible.

Students may contact our office by telephone or mail after November 1 each year to be placed on the mailing list for the upcoming fall/spring long-term school year. Application packets are accepted January 1 through February 28.

American Legion Oratorical Contest

Annual scholarships for undergraduate studies available to eligible high school students no older than 18 and residing in Texas. Four awards from $500-$2,000. First place winner to enter state contest. State winner to compete in national contest.

Basis for selection: Competition, talent, interest in oratory debate. Breadth of knowledge, originality, application of knowledge of topic, skill in selecting examples and analogies, logic, voice, diction style language and delivery. Applicant must demonstrate patriotism.

The contest consists of two speeches: a Prepared Oration and an Assigned Topic. The Prepared Oration must be on some aspect of the Constitution of the United States with emphasis on the duties and obligations of a citizen to our government. The Assigned Topic will be selected from Articles and Sections as listed under Assigned Topics for the current year's contest.

Interest-Free Loan and Grant Program: Students under the age of 24 and who are children of MOAA members (former, active, retired and Reserve/National Guard officers), and children of active-duty, Reserve, National Guard, or retired enlisted military personnel. If such a child served in a Uniformed Service before completing college, however, his or her maximum age for eligibility will be increased by the number of years he or she so served, up to five years. Military academy cadets are not eligible for this program. Qualified students with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale are selected on the basis of their scholastic ability, activities, and financial need. Loans are for undergraduate work only.

MOST VALUABLE STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP/LEADERSHIP AWARD

The Elks National Foundation awards 500 competitive, four-year scholarships ranging from $1,000/year to $15,000/year. Applicants will be judged on scholarship, leadership and financial need. Any high school senior who is a citizen of the United States is eligible to apply. Applicants need not be related to a member of the Elks. Applications are available online or at your local Elks Lodge in September, and completed applications must be submitted to your local Elks Lodge by the deadline. National Assn. of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), National Honor Society Scholarship

National Honor Society Scholarship - This scholarship is available to high school seniors, and selection is based on outstanding scholarship, leadership, service and character. There are 150 scholarships of $1,000 each available for finalists, and there also are state, regional and national awards.

Contact your school principal or counselor in October to request an application and nomination.

Principal's Leadership Award - This scholarship, in partnership with Herff Jones, Inc., is available to high school seniors, and selection is based on leadership skills, participation in service organizations and clubs, achievements in the arts and sciences, employment experience and academic record. Also, student applicants are required to write an essay. There are 100 scholarships of $1,000 each available for finalists, and there also are regional and national awards.

Contact your school principal or counselor in October to request an application and nomination.

Prudential Spirit of Community Awards - In partnership with Prudential Financial, students in grades 5 - 12 are recognized for exemplary community service. State honorees each receive $1,000, as well as an all-expenses-paid trip with one parent or guardian to Washington, D.C. for national recognition. In addition, America's Top Ten Youth Volunteers receive personal awards of $5,000, a gold medallion, a crystal trophy for their school or organization, and a $5,000 grant from The Prudential Foundation for a non-profit, charitable organization of their choice. Contact the organization where you volunteer or your school principal or counselor in August to request an application and nomination.

National Assn. of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), Principal's Leadership Award

Principal's Leadership Award Scholarship Program

The National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) and Herff Jones, Inc. are proud to co-sponsor the 2010–11 Principal's Leadership Award (PLA). This scholarship award affords high school principals the opportunity to recognize a student leader by nominating him or her for a national scholarship. Awards: Scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $12,000 will be awarded to 100 outstanding seniors from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. NASSP and Herff Jones have awarded the PLA scholarships since 1988, providing more than $3.5 million in scholarship awards to outstanding students from across the nation. Students cannot apply for this award but must be nominated by their high school. High school principals or their designee may nominate only one senior per school to compete.

Eligibility: High school principals, assistant principals or their designee may nominate one senior per school for this award. Nominees should be in the top 20% of their class and demonstrate leadership.

Deadline: The postmark deadline for nomination materials is December 4, 2010.

Principals: Posted below you will find instructions for nominating one of your seniors. Remember in selecting your candidate that this is a “leadership” award and your nominee should possess strong leadership qualities.

Prudential Spirit of Community Awards

The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards was created in 1995 by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP). It is the United States' largest youth recognition program based exclusively on volunteer community service. Over the past 14 years, the program has honored more than 90,000 young volunteers at the local, state, and national level.

The 2010 program year officially begins in September when information and application instructions will be mailed to all middle level and high schools in the

The 2010 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards online application is now available.

Who is eligible for this award?

Students in grades 5-12 who are legal residents of any US State or the District of Columbia who have engaged in a volunteer activity that occurred at least partly during the 12 months prior to the date of application.

How does the application process work?

• Students must submit a completed application to a school principal or the head of an officially designated local organization by November 2, 2010.

• By November 9, 2009 schools or local organization have to select their local honorees and certify their application.

• 102 State Honorees will be selected by Feb. 9, 2011. Each honoree will receive $1,000 unrestricted funds and will be invited to a four day celebration events in Washington, DC with one of their parents. All expenses will be paid by the program.

Scholarships are awarded to qualified students with moderate to pro-found hearing loss to continue their education on undergraduate and graduate levels. Students must demonstrate a serious commitment to academic and career excellence. All fields of study are welcome.

Eligibility requirements include: Applicants must be identified as having a moderate to profound hearing loss. Applicants with cochlear implants meet this criteria. Applicants with unilateral hearing loss are not eligible.

Applicants must also use speech and residual hearing and/or speechreading (lipreading) as their primary and preferred mode of communication.

National Presbyterian College Scholarship - Need-Based Scholarships (ranging from $200 to $1,400) available for full-time incoming freshmen in one of the participating colleges related to the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). Applicant must be a member of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. Must file Free Application For Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), take the SAT/ACT exam no later than December 15 of their senior year, have a minimum high school GPA of 3.0 & provide a high school transcript. Future Teachers Conditional Scholarship and Loan Repayment Program (2011-2011)

The Future Teachers Conditional Scholarship and Loan Repayment program encourages outstanding students and paraprofessionals to become teachers, and assists current teachers in obtaining additional endorsements in shortage subjects.

In return for conditional scholarships or loan repayments, participants agree to teach in Washington K-12 public schools, (usually two years of teaching for each year of funding). Funding is available for approximately 100 recipients in 2010-11.

Upon receiving written notice of the applicant’s acceptance for enrollment the second semester, the FCCLA office shall again dispersed the money to the Registrar or Financial Officer of the college or university. This procedure will be repeated for the length of the scholarship award, as long as the recipient continues to meet the requirements. 6. The recipients shall be expected to enroll and maintain a course load of 15 hours per semester. Any deviation from this shall make recipient ineligible, unless the scholarship committee and the State Advisor have granted approval prior to the start of the semester in question. 7. Texas Mutual Insurance Company is a workers' compensation insurance carrier. The scholarship program provides up to $4,000 per individual per semester for tuition and fees to (1) surviving unmarried spouses and unmarried children of an individual who died as a result of a compensable on-the-job injury while working for one of Texas Mutual Insurance Company's policyholders, (2) policyholder employees who qualify for lifetime income benefits pursuant to the Texas Workers' Compensation Act and (3) family members of injured employees who qualify for lifetime income benefits. All awards are completely discretionary, and several factors may be considered before offering a scholarship, including the applicant's economic need, standardized test scores, and high school or college academic performance. Additionally, the recipient must maintain at least a 2.50 grade point average for the duration of the scholarship period. Scholarship Criteria

• Applicants must be either (1) a surviving unmarried spouse or unmarried child of an employee who died as a result of a compensable work-related accident or illness while working for a Texas Mutual policyholder; (2) a person whose injuries qualify them for lifetime income benefits under the Texas Workers' Compensation Act or their spouse or child.

• Children must be younger than 25 years of age and entering or enrolled in an undergraduate program, technical or vocational school for the semester for which they are applying.

• Surviving spouses still eligible for workers' compensation benefits are also eligible for scholarship consideration.

• All applicants must meet academic standards set by the Scholarship Committee.

Scholarship Distribution Tuition and fee scholarship awards will be paid directly to the college, university, technical or vocational school in the recipient's name. Scholarship awards may vary depending on the needs and educational expenses of the student. Scholarships are intended to cover normal undergraduate, technical and vocational school tuition and fees. Financial assistance for course-related books and supplies is also available up to $500 per semester; students must provide satisfactory documentation for reimbursement.

The Police Corps was created to help address violent crime by increasing the number of officers with advanced education and training who are assigned to community patrol. The central component of the Police Corps is the provision of financial assistance and basic police training to college students who agree to serve as officers for four years, along with financial assistance to participating police departments and sheriff's offices. The Police Corps is a Federal program designed to address violent crime by increasing the number of officers with advanced education and training who serve on community patrol. The program has 2 major components. The Police Corps provides scholarships of up to $3,750 per academic year on a competitive basis to students who agree to earn their bachelor's degrees, complete approved Police Corps training, and then serve for four years on patrol, as assigned, with law enforcement agencies in areas of great need. The Police Corps reduces local costs of hiring and training excellent new officers by providing funds to states to develop and provide 16 to 24 weeks of rigorous residential Police Corps training for each participant. The AAA National School Traffic Safety Poster Program (now in its 57th year) and the Senior High Communication Contest (now in its 5th year) help combat the number-one cause of death among children ages 1-14: traffic crashes. Any student in the U.S. and Canada enrolled in grades kindergarten through 12 at a public, parochial, or private school or affiliated with a national youth organization, is eligible. Group or team entries also are accepted.

The Air Force Aid Society (AFAS) awards grants of $2,000 to undergraduates in June based on competitive need-selection criteria uniquely tailored to Air Force families. Grants are available for dependent sons and daughters of Air Force members in one of the following categories: active duty; retired due to length of duty or disability; deceased while on active duty or in retired status; Title 10 Reserve on extended active duty; retired Guard and Reserve; and Title 32 AGR performing full time duties. Spouses of active duty members stationed stateside only are also eligible. Surviving spouses of members qualifying in the deceased category are eligible. The Conditional Grant Program is available to students who intend to major in Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Management Information Systems or Computer Information Systems at a four-year State of Texas accredited public college or university and are classified as economically disadvantaged.
