Insights from a Quilt Shop Owner

Our guest speaker that night is Jeanie Kishiyama, owner (along with

her husband, Jeffrey) of High Prairie Quilts in Parker. She is delighted

to speak to our group about various aspects of running a quilt shop,

with anecdotes, personal insight, and possibly a view into the next

trends coming along in the quilting world in our country. Many of you

may not know, but Jeanie was a longarm quilter before becoming a

shop owner. She has spent many years as a quilter.

The shop is located at 18870 Plaza Dr #102, Parker, CO 80134 south-

west of Parker Road and Lincoln Ave.

Dinner Before the Meeting Jeanie will join us for dinner at 5:00 PM before the meeting, and she

has requested we meet at Armando’s in Parker. All are welcome! If you

plan to come, would you email Kathy at [email protected] up until

noon on June 12 with your RSVP and we will get a reservation to ac-

commodate our group.

involved with an Australian website by Kathryn Kerr called “365 Challenge

Shin-Hee Chin - http://www.shinheechin.com/index.html

Korean-American fiber artist Shin-Hee Chin has a fascinating webpage. Her work includes

sculptures made of thread, art quilts, paintings, and mixed media wall-hangings. The red menu

bar at the top of her page is a bit hard to read, but scanning your mouse over it, you will see

links to her artist statement and “works” pages. The artist statement is densely written, but

Shin-Hee talks about her inspiration from the feminist movement and her Christian faith,

which both challenge the devaluation of the female body and “women’s work.” In honor of tra-

ditional needlework, her pieces are hand-stitched, but her art is nothing like your grand-

mother’s traditional quilts. You will have to see the density of her modern stitched pieces for

yourself. Do this by going to the “works” link and then clicking on the pictures in her “fiber

sculpture”, “fiber art for the wall” and “art quilt” links. In particular, watch for several large

portrait quilts that look like photos but are actually made of yo-yos.

Patchwork (kurak) wall hanging Unknown maker

Made in Uzbekistan, Late 19th Century IQSCM 2015.058.0006

Kurak and kurama are the Turkic words

most Central Asians use for patchwork.

Some scholars believe people have made

kurak for over a millennium. Others tie

its history to the nineteenth-century ex-

pansion of trade with Russia, which

brought new materials to the region.

Regardless of its beginnings, the primary

role of patchwork in Central Asia has al-

ways been as a protective charm used by

brides, new mothers, and children to

guard against sorcery, sickness, and evil

spirits. Triangular fabric amulets (tumar

or doga) attached to clothing and animal

trappings were believed to appease super-

natural elements, protect against harm,

and keep the mystical forces of nature in

harmony. The repeating triangles com-

monly found in Central Asian patchwork served a similar purpose, scaring off the "evil eye" and

other bad thoughts and intentions.

Interestingly, the small, black repeating triangles on this wall hanging--which look like the

"Flying Geese" of traditional American quilts--are actually formed with tiny cross stitches.

This piece is featured in Sacred Scraps: Quilt and Patchwork Traditions of Central Asia, on dis-

play at the International Quilt Study Center & Museum May 12-October 15, 2017.

Patchwork holds a special place in the folk art of Central Asia. In this region of diverse people,

cultures, and landscapes, the act of sewing pieces of cloth together can be both sacred and com-

monplace. Everyday objects gain beauty through the display of plentiful fabrics, but they also

acquire a mystical quality. Central Asians have long honored the power of talismans to guard

against illness and malevolent spirits, fashioning protective amulets from patchwork and other

textiles. As in other parts of the world, these meaningful objects help mark both momentous and

mundane occasions in family and community life.

New this Festival of Quilts we are offering Quilt Appraisals by appointment only (6/8, 6/9, 6/10) to the pub-

lic. The appraiser is Cindy Brick. Information about the appraiser and the appointments:

Cindy Brick is an AQS-certified appraiser, and a Candidate/Member (Senior Personal Property) with ASA

(American Society of Appraisers). In addition, Cindy is a Quilt historian and can date a quilt and provide

some historical quilt related information. So, whether you are interested in an appraisal to have a value for

insurance or resale purposes or to understand more about an older quilt, this is a great opportunity.

The appointments will be 30 minutes on June 8, 9, & 10. You will receive a written appraisal report via mail

after the show. Sign-up at http://signup.com/go/6Co2Bm

The appraisal will cost $45.00 payable to Cindy at the beginning of your appointment. Cindy can take pay-

ments by credit card, check or cash.

We hope to see you at the ACQ 2017 Festival of Quilts!

Be sure to wear a nametag to each meeting

Do you like to write articles about people, events, quilt related subject matter?

The club could use another writer for the newsletter. Maybe you have a

fresh, new perspective to bring to our corner of the quilting world.

Judi has offered to continue the stocking project for the Task Force, Suzie has offered to

chair the fundraiser. We need someone to head up future Member Showcase (2018 and be-

yond), and possibly a Hospital Bag coordinator.
