Council In Action

Council 1872, Fr. Luke Sheehan Council, Bend, Oregon’s Sir Knight (SK) Edward Boreczky wanted to help

honor and memorialize the anniversary of his Council and all their good works. The Council will be celebrating

its 100th anniversary next May, 2017.

SK Boreczky made a trip to Italy accompanying his friend Deacon Doug Vlcheck, from Jackson Wyoming, who

celebrated the Jubilee Year of Mercy for Deacons.

After prayerful consideration, while in Italy, he decided a Papal Apostolic Blessing for the occasion of the

Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy would be the best way. The blessed artifact was presented to the Council’s

Chaplin Fr. Joseph T. Kunnelaya and the Pastor Rev. Jose Thomas Mudakodiyil at the Council’s meeting July

11, 2016.

Canby Big Night Out Street Dance (Submitted by Bob Sheveland, Council 3484)

The Canby Knights of Columbus, Council 3484, participated in the 2nd annual “Big Night Out Street Dance” held in downtown Canby on Friday, August 26th. Greg Perez and Duane Kloser, members of the Canby Knights of Columbus, were instrumental in organizing our booth. Greg was a major player in the overall organization and logistics for this event, that included activities for children and adults. The Canby Knights could have raised money for our organization, but thought it would be better to make people more aware of what the Canby Pregnancy Care Center does and the possibility of saving just one baby’s life. It was great to have the Knights and their wives help with this event and make the Knights of

Columbus more visible in our community.

91st Council In Oregon Presented With Their Charter On August 20th, during the District 17 and 18 Organizational Meeting, Grand Knight Leroy Nuckles was presented with their new Council Charter. Getting Back to Work

Fall is in the air and although most Councils don’t take summers off, Fall always seems to be the season when we have a little more time to start working on Council programs. It’s the time to begin the push towards Star Council. This year, when your Council is deciding which Church programs to schedule, remember to include some programs that are designated part of the Building the Domestic Church (BTDC) initiative. One of these programs is the 5th Sunday Rosary Program.

Basically, members of a Council lead parishioners in praying the Rosary on any 5th Sunday of the month, throughout the year. 5th Sundays of the month occur sporadically throughout the year, with any given year having 4 or 5 of the 5th Sundays of the month. Supreme has program packets available at no charge, with finger rosaries to pass out and rosary prayers on cards in English and Spanish to distribute to parishioners.

Supreme allows flexibility in how you want to participate. An example is how we do it in our parish in Astoria. We hold our 5th Sunday Rosary immediately following our Sunday afternoon Spanish Mass. We have elected to pray a bi-lingual Rosary (English and Spanish) alternating the language after each decade. With part of our Rosary intention towards bringing our parish family closer together. What better way to do it than by getting parishioners united praying the Rosary in common?

The 5th Sunday Rosary can be reported on Part III of the Church Programs Report, and as I mentioned at the beginning, is one of the Building the Domestic Church activities that will be needed this year in order to fulfill requirements for the Columbian award. Other BTDC activities to be mindful of when planning your schedule for this year are: Journey to the Inn ~ Consecration to the Holy Family ~ Family Fully Alive Devotional Program ~ Food for Families ~ Keep Christ in Christmas ~ Spiritual Formation Groups ~ and Family Week Celebrations. Not all are Church programs, so if you have any questions about the activity or how to report them, please contact me.

District 7 Summer Meeting District 7's Summer Meeting was held at the New Boulder Falls Inn and Conference Center in Lebanon, OR. The District meeting included a tour of the facilities. In the photo on the left, admiring the grounds are: Nathan Aldelman, GK Lebanon; Bernie Covino, Past Faithfull Navigator, Assembly 906; Stephen Suing, FS Lebanon; Tom Radel, DD7. District 7 made some solid plans for success at their Summer meeting. Great attendance from all 5 Mid Valley Councils in Corvallis, Lebanon, Sweet Home and Albany. Pictured below is Albany GK Jon Keefer and Albany First Lady Teri Keefer.

At the 2016 District 7 Summer Meeting in Lebanon, IPSD Robert Kish was presented with a copy of a 1936 Columbian Magazine from the 54th Supreme convention held in Toronto, Canada. This was just 80 years before Bob Kish accepted the prestigious Pinnacle award for the state of Oregon, in Toronto, Canada at the 134th Supreme Convention. Again, congratulations IMPSD Bob Kish. (No color photo provided)

Council In Action Canby Council 3484 sponsored the St. Patrick Parish picnic on Sunday, August 28th. Four of their best chefs served up a delicious barbecue chicken dinner for 371 hungry parishioners along with pizza and hot dogs for the children. During the picnic, parishioners helped run organized games for the children, bingo and volleyball for adults. The highlight of the picnic was seeing Fr. Arturo in the splash tank, for almost an hour, having a great time

with the kids and adults.

Old and young alike enjoyed snow cones, cotton candy, lemonade and more. It was a beautiful day to socialize with family and friends and meet other parishioners in our church family. At the end of a hot day, ice cream treats were served to all and a drawing was made for a children's bicycle.

Before the picnic, Fr Arturo joined in the fun and participated in our 1st ever parish bike ride (50+ parishioners participated).

Much effort and organization by our Knights was rewarded by high praise from parishioners for a wonderful afternoon of fun, food, family and friends. Fraternally, Duane Kloser, GK Council 3484

Assembly 3656 in Florence In Action Submitted by: Pat Beckham, Faithful Navigator, Assembly 3656

Several Sir Knights of the recently formed Assembly 3656, Pope St .John Paul II in Florence, Oregon, built a 10' x 10' wooden storage shed at the home of the director of the St Mary’s Conference of St Vincent de Paul.

The project required 65 man hours to complete during the last week of July. This now allows the St Vincent de Paul workers, some of whom are Knights and their wives in our parish, to more efficiently and more quickly complete the process of getting much needed clothing and household goods to the needy by using the shed as a warehouse.

Participating in this worthwhile cause were Brothers John Ervin, Johnny Johnson and Pat Beckham.

Youth Director Report Attention all District Deputies! Do we have medals and times set up for your district contests for Soccer? The only thing that we need is for you to set up the dates, times and a crew to hold the district championships. All District Deputies, if you did not get your soccer championship medals, please let me know. These should have been passed out at our summer meeting. We only had 11 sets of

medals for Oregon. As for the State Soccer and Basketball Championships - I am in the process of setting up a location to hold the State championship at Valley Catholic High School in Aloha, Oregon. George Murphy and I have made contact with the school last month and I sent emails to the school to reserve dates (Soccer November 19th or 20th) and (Basketball March 18 or 19, 2017); however since I have had no answer to my emails, I will follow up on this. I have to say that this summer was busy for me. There is an update about the online reporting form on our Oregon Knights of Columbus website. I will follow up with Gale Scolbe about his brilliant ideas to help improve our youth reporting form online. Thank you, Gale Scolbe for helping us out and to others who are also having the same problems and want to help us improve reporting. Updates are coming soon. Let me recap what I tried to relay here. Councils should start now to hold their youth Soccer event during September. Each Council needs to have their soccer Council winners forms sent during October to their District Deputy or hand carry it to the district championship. That will depend on District Deputies and how they want to handle their forms with their championships in October. As I said before, I am in the process of following up on seeing which school will be available for the soccer championship dates in November. Council Essay and Poster Contests deadlines: Students have until mid but no later than the end of October to complete their essay and poster. Councils have to judge each essay and poster and select the winners before District judging is made in December and January. State essay and poster judging will be February and March. Coats For Kids Dear Brother Knight,

The Knights of Columbus launched the Coats for Kids initiative so every child in need would feel welcomed, cherished and protected. Since the program started in 2009, Councils have purchased and distributed more than 306,000 new winter coats to children throughout North America and Canada. Yet, countless children still need our help. There are many different activities Councils can do to get involved with this program. Consider “adopting” a school where you can host a Coats for Kids drive and other charitable activities throughout the year. Or you can provide coats to your local police officers to hand out to children they encounter in their line of duty.

Coats can be purchased for $220 (which includes the ground shipping) per case of twelve for orders shipped to addresses in the continental United States. For orders shipped outside the United States, the cost is $245 (including ground shipping).

Coats should be ordered through knightsgear.com. By placing your order through this site, you will have a shorter shipping time and be sent tracking information, allowing for a smoother coat-ordering experience.

For more information, visit kofc.org/coats or call 203-752-4270.

Remember, just one case of coats per council can make a difference!

I am putting out the call for "volunteer grillers" to help at the Fr. Taaffe Brat booth at this year’s Oktoberfest

in Mt. Angel, Sept. 15, 16, 17, 18. This year the Fr. Taaffe Booth will be serving brats again. NO PIZZA

THIS YEAR! I am reaching out to every Knight, who is not involved with his own Council’s food booth, to come forward and volunteer for a shift or two during this event. This is a perfect Pro-Life volunteer opportunity and another great "Pro-Life" line item that could be completed on your SP7 Columbian Award Application. "Volunteered at Pro-life fund raiser for Fr. Vol. 113 No. 2 October - November 2016

Ask Eligible Men to Join Today, I want to address the growth of the Order. Membership growth is the fuel that keeps this great fraternal engine running. All of our charitable works at the Council, state, national and international level are thanks to our hard-working members. And more members equals more charity.

We know that the membership blitz is a tried and true way for Councils to get more men to join. We see these pushes often in March, in celebration of Founder’s Day and again in October.

These drives are very successful because Brother Knights have increased visibility by speaking or presenting during and after Masses and at special events. We must remember that we have a duty to ask each and every Catholic gentleman to join our ranks for the good of the Church, the community and the Order.

During the rest of the year, we often “forget” to ask men to join and to bring their families into the Knights of Columbus family. You probably know an eligible Catholic man you could ask today. What if the only reason he hasn’t joined is because no one has asked him yet?

When telling a prospect about the strengths of the Order, don’t forget our greatest fraternal benefit—our insurance program. This is often a “selling point” to a potential member who is on the fence. Many members become Knights simply to be able to buy coverage to protect their family. Soon after, they realize the good our charitable works do for their community, and they are proud to be members.

As your professional Knights of Columbus insurance agent, I look forward to helping us grow in fraternity in any way that I can.

Council In Action Council 9529, Lincoln City helped support the “Raise The Roof” campaign held at St. Augustine church in July 2016. The local Knights cooked hot dogs, hamburgers and seasoned ears of corn. Also, DD23 and Council Grand Knight David McKee was instrumental in having a huge ladder truck brought in by local fire depart-ment. It was on display to allow everyone a chance to see the ladder extended, inside the vehicle as well as how it works. Overall, a very worthwhile endeavor by the Knights and the parish.

Oregon District Master Report First, I would like to give a huge ‘Thank You’ to our Former Oregon District Master Michael Rooke and his lovely wife, Linda. Michael, you had a very successful four year term as our Master. You could not have had the success you had without the support and dedication of your right hand—Linda. I find I have very big shoes to fill and will do my utmost to do just that. The next two years will certainly be a challenge and I'm looking forward to it.

One of the tasks as a District Master is to select District Marshals. I would like to introduce the names of four

Brother Sir Knights that I have asked to take on the very important role of District Marshal's (DM):

First is SK Joe Schaecher who will have responsibility for all of Southern Oregon from Eugene to the

border and east to the Oregon Coast.

Second is SK Jesse Villarreal whose area of responsibility will be East of I-5 from the Washington Border

to Salem and East to Bend.

Third is SK Kim Moser whose area of responsibility will be West of I-5 from the Washington Border south

to Salem and west to the Oregon Coast from Astoria to Lincoln City.

Fourth is SK David Jackson whose area of responsibility will be from Salem south to Eugene and west

from Newport to Florence.

I am not forgetting Eastern Oregon - it will be covered by all DM’s on a rotating basis.

Please send all Honor Guard/Color Guard requests to my email address [email protected] I will then send to the appropriate Marshal covering the area that the request came from so that the Marshal can send to the Faith Navigators & Color Corps Commander.

Lastly, but not the least, I have added 4 new members to the 4th Degree Exemplification Team. They are State Warden & Immediate Past Master, SK Michael Rooke, SK Gregg Harris, SK Duane Morris and SK Ken Anderson who join the current members: Past Masters SK Andy Robinson and Past Master SK Carroll Gorg and our Audio/Video Knight SK Daniel Ramirez.

Bob Perin

Vol. 113 No. 2 October - November 2016 Food For Families Chairman’s Report

The Knights of Columbus is committed to ending hunger in local communities by asking local Councils to participate in the Order-wide Food for Families Program. Since 2012, the Knights of Columbus has donated over $8.5 million and 14.7 million pounds of food to local food pantries, community food banks and soup kitchens. To encourage local Knights of Columbus Councils to participate in this worthwhile program, the Supreme Council offers financial rebates to Councils, Assemblies or Squires Circles that donate food or money. For Councils or Assemblies, the Supreme Council will refund $100 for every $500 donated, or for every 1,000 pounds of food that a Council contributes to a parish

food pantry, community food bank or soup kitchen - up to a maximum of $500 per Council/Assembly per Fraternal Year. Circles will receive a refund from the Supreme Council of $20 for every $100 donated, or every 200 pounds of food that is contributed - up to a maximum refund of $100 per Circle per Fraternal Year. Reported contributions of food and/or monetary donations should be cumulative for the Fraternal Year and there is no need to send in a refund request every time a contribution is made. However, to be eligible for the rebate, the cumulative total of contributions of food/money needs to reach a minimum of $500 or 1,000 pounds of food for Councils or Assemblies, and a minimum of $100 or 200 pounds of food for Circles. In addition, the Supreme Council recognizes that participating in this program can be time consuming for the local Council. Should a Council choose to participate in this program, this will fulfill all four of the Family Activity requirements for the Columbian Award. In order to qualify as fulfilling all four requirements, the Council must collect and donate a minimum of 1,000 pounds of food and Council members must contribute a minimum of 100 man-hours in the program. Participating Councils/Assemblies/Circles can qualify to receive an attractive plaque by reporting activity in the program on the (#10057) to the Supreme Council. ACTION STEPS:

Contact your local parish food pantry, community food bank or soup kitchen to ensure they will be able to receive food donations and inquire if they have any specific needs.

Obtain permission from the appropriate person (pastor, business owner(s), etc.) to set up the food drive at the church or store and to display posters.

Ask nearby retail stores for empty boxes so there is a place to store donations. If the Council is conducting the Food Drive at the parish, have flyers available for distribution or

placed in the pews announcing the details of the Food Drive. o Ask the pastor for permission to make an announcement before or after Mass about the Food

Drive.

o Be sure to include a written announcement in the parish bulletin.

For monetary donations, be sure to have a secure receptacle in the collection area for cash and

checks.

THOUGHTS OF VOCATIONS REFUND SUPPORT VOCATIONS PROGRAM

It is that time again, kids going back to school, school buses always stopping in front of you, 20 mph warning signs flashing and buying pencils, writing paper, new tablets, new clothes and shoes. Our Seminarians and Postulates are also going back to school with many of those same

expenses our children experience. They are going back to school to learn how to teach us

to live our lives as Jesus taught the Apostles. Now is the time to renew your donations to

your Seminarians and/or Postulates or add a Seminarian or Postulate or in case you do not have the format

for selecting a Seminarian or Postulate, here is a suggested one:

1) Your Council decides that they will support a Seminarian or Postulate.

2) Your Vocation Chairman contacts Tamara Swanson, 503-845-3549, ([email protected].)

for the name of a Seminarian or Postulate who could use your support.

3) The Vocation Chairman obtains and completes Form 2863, RSVP Refund and Plaque Application, on

line (http://www.koc.org/un/en/officers forms\council.html) with the Seminarian or Novice name and

address.

4) A check in the amount of $500.00, made payable to your Seminarian/Postulate is sent to Tamara

Swanson for distribution. This should accompany a letter telling him/her that your Council is providing

financial and spiritual support for him/her. Invite him/her to a Council meeting or your next dinner.

5) When the check is cashed, fill out the form and mail it to Supreme Council, Department of Fraternal

Services, 1 Columbus Plaza, New Haven, CT 06510 along with a copy of the check, front and back. Email a

copy of the front sheet to ([email protected]).

6) You will receive $100 from Supreme for each Seminarian or Novice you support.

Bible Quiz

A father was approached by his small son who told him proudly,

"I know what the Bible means!"

His father smiled and replied, "What do you mean, you 'know' what the Bible means?

The son replied, "I do know!"

"Okay," said his father. "What does the Bible mean?"

"That's easy, Daddy..." the young boy replied excitedly,"

It stands for 'Basic Information Before Leaving Earth.
