Meeting the need for Lasallian educationLast fall, we began celebrating our

150th year of educating young men in the Lasallian tradition. We then spent the year continuing this celebration while also reflecting on a century and a half of spiritual enrichment and academic excellence.

Our celebration opened with a Sesquicentennial Liturgy with Bishop Edward U. Kmiec and Brother Visitor Dennis Malloy, FSC. Shortly after, we honored one of our longest-living alumni, Donald Jacobi ’30, during the Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. At the Lasallian Gala and Auction in February, we heard the personal accounts of two currents students who were able to attend St. Joe’s because of the tuition support they received in the form of need-based and/or merit-based aid. Later in the year, we awarded honorary diplomas to four former students who were never able to graduate because of their service in World War II.

We spent last year displaying great pride in our past! To use a phrase we have used previously, we seek to spend this year exhibiting our Faith in the Future! And the future looks bright – with 217 students, the Class of 2015 is the largest freshmen class we have had recently. These students represent towns in Western New York from Holland to Lewiston, and they are diverse in race, ethnicity, religion and economic status. In the tradition of John Baptist de La Salle and the Christian Brothers, we welcome this diversity and recognize the common threads that connect them: the shared vision of academic excellence, hope for a bright future for all, and a Christ-centered integrity that will

continue to grow through their four years at St. Joe’s and beyond.

When the freshmen class first came together at their Orientation on September 7, I wondered how, during these especially challenging times, it was possible to attract so many bright young men to our school. For me, this class is a testament to the increasing need for our Lasallian, college-preparatory education. Western New Yorkers continue to recognize St. Joe’s as a place of academic, artistic, and athletic excellence. Students are encouraged to be the person they want to be; they are respected as individuals while being nurtured in a faith-filled environment. At St. Joe’s, every student is different, and every student is given the opportunity for personal accomplishment in a community of excellence; a community that recognizes the presence of God at all times.

Later in this issue, you will read about four alumni who have been recognized in this year’s Buffalo Business First’s Forty Under 40. Each man earned

the honor for his individual talents, merits and achievements. Their unique talents were nurtured at our school, and each man was given the tools to succeed later in life. That’s what St. Joe’s is all about.

There is another reason behind the large number of students in our freshman class, and that is the simple fact that of these 217 students, 70% will receive financial aid. Without the enduring support of our donors – our alumni and friends – many of these students may not have had the opportunity to attend St. Joe’s. Through planned giving, endowment, the Lasallian Auction and the Annual Fund, our benefactors – YOU – continue to support the MISSION of St. Joe’s in making our school accessible to those qualified young men who seek our very special Lasallian educational experience! We have compiled the full list of donors in the Annual Report, which is now online at www.sjci.com.

Your dedication, as well as that of our faculty, staff and parents, represents the Lasallian mission at its very core – working together to educate our students, regardless of their background. This is what we devote ourselves to every day, and it is one of the many reasons that I am so very proud to have been a part of our school community for over 41 years.

Each of us look forward to advancing the MISSION of St. John Baptist de La Salle, each of us has great Faith in our Future as we anticipate the next 150 years to be just as rewarding as the last for St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute.

Live, Jesus, in our Hearts … Forever

This August, St. Joe's flipped the switch on a new rooftop solar energy system. The 108-panel system will feature a real-time display of electricity production and an educational kiosk in the Student Commons.

“The solar panels will further educate our students about what's required to have enough energy for future generations,” said St. Joe's President

Robert Scott. “We teach our students to use math and science to answer questions about our world, such as the importance of preservation.”

The new solar energy system was installed by Solar Liberty of Buffalo. A solar grant from New York State

Energy Research and Development Authority (NYS-ERDA), together with support from a generous alumnus, covered the full cost of the system. All electricity produced by the 24 kW solar array will reduce the electricity bill by nearly $3,000 in the first year. Factoring in inflation, St. Joe’s is expected to save $113,500 over the 25-year warrantied lifetime of the system. This is equal to buying two school buses and a transport van.

“The savings are great, but we’re even more excited about the teaching opportunities,” said Mr. Scott. “When our students see the output of electrical power through the system’s LED screen in the center of our building, they’ll see the energy savings in real time. Our Environmental Science classes will learn the full impact of this project and explore future ways to go green.”

St. Joe's began environmental efforts several years ago, when a student-run

Recycling Club was formed and later recognized by the Town of Tonawanda Town Board. Since then, the school has also replaced the lights throughout its facility with energy-saving lighting to reduce energy consumption.

The solar panels continue this initiative. The system is silent, produces zero pollution, and will offset the building’s carbon footprint by 20 tons of CO2 per year: That is the equivalent greenhouse gas emissions produced by burning about 2,000 gallons of gasoline or the amount of carbon removed from the atmosphere by 3.9 acres of pine forest.

Solar Panels Lower Costs, Raise Awareness

Solar panels aren't the only new improvements to the school this fall. Another area of the school has seen major renovation.

The field house next to the Robert T. Scott, AFSC, All-Weather Athletic Field has been completely renovated. The project, financed by a generous benefactor, includes a new varsity locker room which will be used for fall and spring outdoor sports, as well as a rowing machine room for the crew team in the winter.

The concessions area, still under construction, overlooks a brand new outdoor pavillion. This covered section is perfect for parents and fans to stay

out of the rain during drizzly football, lacrosse and soccer games.

"This new fieldhouse has the look and feel of a college facility," said Director of Admissions and Assistant Wrestling Coach Pete Kennedy '97. "From the maroon lockers, to the helmets of former alumni, to the Marauder featured prominently on the floor, the players are reminded constantly of the tradition they work to uphold."

A tour of the fieldhouse, led by Athletic Director Pete Schneider and Head Football Coach Dennis Gilbert, can be found on the St. Joe's YouTube page at www.youtube.com/user/sjcivideos.

The 18th Annual Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony was held on Friday, November 18TH. SJCI was proud to induct the following men:

Vincent G. Clabeaux ’33 †

Vincent Clabeaux was a three-year St.

Joe’s football starter and team captain during his junior year. As a freshman, he helped the 1929 varsity football team win the Catholic, Private and City Championships. Vincent was also a four-year starter and two-year captain on the baseball team, leading them to league championships during his freshman, sophomore and junior years. During Vincent’s junior year, the team went undefeated on their way to a City Championship and Western New York High School Championship. He posted an undefeated pitching record of 15-0 in recorded games in his high school career. Vincent was a Star MUNY league player, winning titles every summer while a student. While playing in the Buffalo Municipal League, he was scouted by legendary New York Yankees manager Joe McCarthy, but suffered a career-ending injury during tryouts. He later became a golf and bowling enthusiast. Vincent passed away at 79 on July 4, 1991.

Frank J. Schreck ’41 †

The late Frank J. Schreck ’41 may be the only inductee to any sports hall

of fame who retired with an absolutely unblemished record, spanning over 40 years. As the key volunteer and site manager to the football program, Frank was responsible for counting the “gate” for each home game. He was never off, not even by 1¢. The only close call happened when one volunteer double-checked the gate and found the tally off by $5. About an hour later, $5 was

found on the floor as cleaning crews swept up. Frank’s perfect record was intact! At home games, Frank managed the parking lot, took care of after-game vouchers for police and game officials, handled delivery of extra bleachers, and ensured that programs contained rosters for visiting teams. Frank served on the St. Joe’s Board of Governors and the Board of Trustees. He was named “St. Joe’s Man of the Year” in 1977 and inducted into the Signum Fidei Society in 1989.

Mark V. Migliore ’77

Mark was a member of the first swimming/diving team in St. Joe’s history. Mark was a

co-captain during his junior and senior seasons. He was also a first-team All-Catholic diver as a sophomore, junior and senior, and was an All-Catholic swimmer as a junior and senior. He won the All-Catholic Diving Championships in his senior year, breaking the All-Catholic record that stood for over 13 years. Following his graduation from St. Joe’s, Mark went on to Niagara University, where he lettered all four years for the Purple Eagles. In his second year, the team went undefeated, beating the Canadian National Champions along the way. Mark broke the freshman diving record at Niagara and had top ten finishes in the Eastern Swimming & Diving Championships as a junior and senior.

John H. Boutet ’81

John earned varsity letters in baseball, hockey, and soccer. He was

also captain of the baseball team his junior and senior years and captain of the soccer team his senior year. John led St. Joe’s to Msgr. Martin League titles in baseball (1979: 19-1 record), hockey (1980: 18-1-1 record) and soccer (1980: the first in SJCI history). A second basemen in baseball, he was first-team

All Western New York as a senior and All-Catholic his junior and senior years. John was also second-team All-Catholic goalie in hockey and first-team All-Catholic goalie in soccer in his senior year. He was a three-time MVP in baseball, a two-time “Charlie Hustle” award winner, and Co-MVP (along with Tom Lyon) for the varsity soccer team. John set several school records in baseball including single-season batting average at .508, which led the Msgr. Martin League. He went to Canisius College and earned letters in baseball, highlighted by a .373 batting average in 1982 (25th highest in school history), while starting as a freshman. John had free-agent tryouts with the Toronto Blue Jays, Pittsburgh Pirates and Cleveland Indians while playing AAABA and AAA MUNY baseball in Buffalo. He was inducted into Western New York Baseball Hall of Fame earlier this year.

Sean P. Ryan ’98

Sean was an exceptional three-sport athlete at St. Joe’s. He lettered in football,

lacrosse, and indoor track. Sean guided the football team to championships in his junior and senior years. As a team kicker, he kicked 23 extra points in his junior year. In addition to his 26 receptions as a tight end, Sean had 102 solo tackles; six sacks and five fumble recoveries. He was first-team All-Catholic as a junior and senior, and first-team All Western New York and first-team All State as a senior. Sean received the Jerry Butler Athletes in Action “Total Athlete Award” and the Phil McConkey Award for Best Student Athlete. Sean went on to Worcester Academy and later Boston College. A four-year starter, Sean was called the "most competitive player in the Big East" by USA Today. His 12 career-scoring receptions rank second in school history among tight ends. Sean was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in 2004 and played for six years in the NFL. Sean retired from professional football in 2011.

This year’s fall drama production, “You Can’t Take it with You,” wowed audiences in November.

Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning comedy, "You Can't Take it With You" followed Alice Sycamore (played by Heather Cassari) as she introduced her fiancé, Tony Kirby (Peter Scaglione '12), to her quirky family. When the two families combined, lifestyle and philosophy collided.

This hilarious production starred St. Joe's students John Barden, Josh Ranallo, Austin Lauer, Angel Leon, Ian Lalonde, Kevin Harman, Peter Scaglione, Jacob Kraft and Adam Roaldi. It was directed by theater teacher Paschal Frisina '96.

Kyle Briggs '12 has been named recipient of the 31st annual Phil Scaffidi Alumni Scholarship. The award is presented annually to an incoming senior who participates in multiple sports and exemplifies dedication, determination and desire. The recipient must also demonstrate good citizenship to the community and to St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute.

“This scholarship will really make a difference for my family and me,” commented Kyle. “I have a sibling in college, so this tuition support will take some financial stress off my parents.”

Briggs is a three-sport star in the athletic program at St. Joe’s, including basketball, football and baseball. He is

the senior class president and active in Student Council, Diversity Club and the Donate Life Club. Also, his dedication to academics has landed him on the Honor Roll every year since he was a freshman.

“St. Joe’s isn’t just a school, it’s a home,” Briggs added. “I’ve been given so many opportunities here and this is just one of them.”

He is the son of Corienthia and Kevin Briggs and resides in Buffalo.

St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute offers its congratulations to Kyle for the spirit of sportsmanship, athletic competition, and good citizenship that he – and Phil Scaffidi '74 – exemplified.

Two students of the Class of 2011 have been named National AP Scholars, the most prestigious title given for excellent performance on the college-level Advanced Placement Program (AP) exams.

Daniel Kezerashvili '11 and Andrew McGloin '11 earned the distinction by achieving an average score of 4 on all AP exams, and attaining a score of 4 or higher on eight or more exams.

In total, 53 St. Joe’s Students were named AP Scholars at varying levels. 13 of these students were named AP Scholars with Distinction by earning an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on five or more these exams. 16 students qualified as AP Scholars with Honor by earning an average grade of at least 3.25 on all AP exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams. 24 students were named AP Scholars by

completing three or more AP exams with grades of 3 or higher.

The College Board’s Advancement Placement Program provides academically prepared students with opportunities to take rigorous college-level courses in high school, and to earn college credit from successful performance on AP exams. About18% of the 1.6 million students who took AP exams earned an AP Scholar Award.

“Over 50 years, the U.S. Catholic school population has dropped by almost two-thirds. This trend is due not to lack of demand, but to the inability of parents to pay tuition,” said the former mayor of Los Angeles, Richard Riordan, in his recent Wall Street Journal article, Saving Catholic Education.

Riordan, who spearheads efforts to raise money for L.A. Catholic schools, states, “Catholic schools infuse beliefs, values and standards that children will carry all their lives...[They] create a sense of community and an expectation that every child will achieve his or her goals.”

In the last five (5) years at St. Joe’s, the need for tuition support (merit- and need-based awards) has nearly doubled.

With the school’s tuition now in excess of $10,000 per year and a challenged economy in Western New York, fewer deserving students are able to afford the Catholic, Lasallian education we provide.

As the need grows, so does our need to respond. The larger the challenge, the greater the opportunity.

For over 150 years, St. Joe’s has fulfilled its mission of making education accessible to all deserving students. Most recently, we have been able to offer more and more tuition support. Our generous benefactors have made that possible.

Your gifts to the annual fund, endowments, the auction, and via planned gifts (such as bequests,

retirement accounts, and life insurance policies left to the school) provide benefits to over 75% of our students.

If you contribute to the school year after year, as so many of our loyal donors do, and plan to do so again this year, Thank You! If you have donated in the past, but not recently, please consider a gift this year. If you have not sent a gift to the school previously, your support is needed now, more than ever.

Gifts can be made using the envelope included with this issue of The Collegiate or online at www.sjci.com/donation.

On behalf of the entire St. Joe’s community, most especially our students, Thank You!

FALL 2011

Timothy J. DiGiulio, CRPC '94 and Richard F. Cronin '68 have been named Co-chairs of the 2011-2012 Annual Giving Fund. Tim, an Investment Advisor with L&M Financial Services in Amherst, New York, reflected on the opportunity to serve the school:

At the beginning of the next 150 years in SJCI history, I am proud to co-chair the 2011-12 Annual Giving Fund. At schools

like St. Joe’s, tuition costs are similar, claims of educational excellence mirror one another, and student outcomes are touted with much the same language. Yet, alumni generosity remains an opportunity to differentiate ourselves. Your annual fund donation helps propel St. Joes forward in ways envied by our peers.

Rick, who will be inducted into the Signum Fidei Society in April 2012 and is a past recipient of the St. Joe’s “Man of the Year” award, stated emphatically:

The Annual Fund is a wonderful opportunity to help our students take advantage of what my parents sacrificed to give me. How many of us would be the men we are without the Faith, knowledge and friends we acquired at St. Joe's?

We can never fully repay our parents and deceased alumni, whose financial support helped St. Joe's make us who we are. But we can "give back" to the students of today - and tomorrow - the chance to share in those same gifts we received. Please help them.

The notion of honoring the school’s past while providing for its future is reflected in this year’s Annual Giving Fund theme, which is taken from Hebrews 13:8: “Yesterday, Today, and Forever.” We hope you will join the school by thanking Tim and Rick for their service and supporting this year’s Annual Giving Fund.

Students help Niagara County seniors On Sunday, October 23, St. Joe's

students made a real difference in the lives of Niagara County seniors - and had some fun in the process.

14 Marauders joined six other area high schools, including Canisius, to attend the Senior Prom, an event that matches high school students and senior citizens for an afternoon of dinner, dancing, and conversation.

Hosted in Niagara Falls by the Health Association of Niagara County Inc. (HANCI), this event helps two seemingly different generations learn that they aren't so different after all.

“Some of the students are a little unsure before they get to the prom,” said Event Chairperson Chris Argona. “They don’t know what they’re going to talk to the senior citizens about, and they’re not sure about dancing with people in their 70's and 80's. But once they get matched up, the two age groups are amazed to find out how much they have in common. And I can tell you that the older folks teach the students a thing or two on the dance floor.”

St. Joe's senior Brian Pilski of Lockport echoed Argona’s words. “It was really nice to see older generations and younger generations coming together

to share an afternoon,” said Pilski. “I learned that older people aren’t out of touch."

HANCI has hosted the Senior Prom since 2003. Participating schools included Niagara Falls High School, Niagara Catholic High School, Niagara-Wheatfield High School, Lewiston-Porter High School and Newfane High School.

This was St. Joe's first year of participation in the Prom. The school set aside its famous rivalry with Canisius High School to volunteer side-by-side and bring smiles to the people who need them most.

Students pose with Director of Marketing Communications Kate LaBrake and Student Council Adviser Dan Scanlon at the HANCI Senior Prom on October 23.

Every year, St. Joe's students join 15 other schools of the District of Eastern North America (DENA) for the annual Lasallian Youth Assembly. This six-day trip includes service opportunities, spiritual enrichment and education. Moreover, it helps students understand that they're a part of something greater: a global Lasallian community.

Last July, the Lasallian Youth Assembly was held at LaSalle University in Philadelphia. With a theme of "Liberty and Justice for All," the assembly focused on the founding principles of the Brothers of the Christian Schools.

“The Lasallian Youth Assembly was the greatest experience of my life because it helped me learn what it means to be Lasallian," said Jack Jubert '13, one of six St. Joe's students who participated. "It changed how I view my life and my service ministry forever.”

"I not only performed great service and came to a more complete understanding of the Lasallian virtues, but I also made some great new friends from around the country who are Lasallian, too," explained participant Nick Courtney '14. "I can now say that I truly understand what it means to be Lasallian.”

At only 27, Chris Howard '02 is the second-youngest honoree of the year. An entrepreneur at heart, Chris co-founded textbook buy-back company Bucks4Books with a friend while still in college. He recently also began FiveNineGroup, a web marketing agency for pro athletes. If that sounds like a lot of work, it’s because it is. Luckily, Chris was prepared for the challenge.

“St. Joe’s built the foundation for my work ethic and showed me the importance of integrity,” said Howard. “Morals are what drive a business, and mine were developed in high school.”

However, St. Joe’s provided Chris with more than a work ethic. It also introduced him to his major passion: hockey. Chris currently volunteers coaching the SUNY Fredonia ACHA hockey team; a program he helped to build from the ground up.

Howard’s not the only entrepreneur who received accolades. Nick Sinatra '98 is founder and CEO of Sinatra and Company Real Estate, a growing, full-service firm with offices in Buffalo and Chicago. Prior to this venture, Nick was Associate Political Director in the White House during the Bush Administration. However, Nick’s track record of success began years before.

At St. Joe's, Nick was captain of the 1998 10-0 football team, threw shotput and discus, and earned the grades to attend Yale University and the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. A dedicated student, Nick drew inspiration from the Lasallian mission of giving back.

“St. Joe’s grounded my views on the world and inspired my passion for public service,” he said. “It’s one of the reasons I went into politics, and it’s one of the reasons I started my company.”

Fellow honoree New York State Senator Tim Kennedy '94 also found his love of public service at the school. The only student from South Buffalo in his grade, Tim quickly developed his people skills to build friendships – a skill that would be crucial in his future political career. His daily hour and a half-long bus ride also helped him understand the area he would someday represent.

“Venturing outside of my close-knit neighborhood made me feel like I was in a different world ,” said Tim. “I didn’t know it at the time, but seeing the city really gave me a whole new perspective and expanded my horizons.”

A New York State Senator since 2010, Tim has sponsored legislation to foster the growth of green jobs, support the SUNY 2020 Plan, and reduce the State’s property tax burden. He is a graduate of D’Youville College in Occupational Therapy and still lives in South Buffalo with his wife, Katie, his daughter Eireann and his sons (and future Marauders) Connor and Padraic.

Henry McWilliams '90 benefitted on a more personal level while at St. Joe’s. The Director of Finance at UB Associates Inc., Henry attributes his strong network of friends and colleagues to his days as a Marauder.

“The biggest things I took from my education at St. Joe’s were the intangibles,” said Henry. “I developed my work ethic, language and social skills. I built relationships that have lasted throughout the years, and I can relate to others simply because of my St. Joe's experience.”

Henry, a St. Joe’s track runner and bowler, says that his greatest professional achievement was getting involved with the St. Joe’s community again. He is currently a member of the St. Joe’s Board of Trustees and is a past member of the Alumni Board.

He lives on Grand Island with his wife, daughter Emma, and son Patrick Henry. “He’s a member of the St. Joe’s Class of 2027,” Henry joked. “I’d enroll him right now if I could.”

Four St. Joe’s alumni were honored at the Buffalo Business First 40 Under Forty luncheon, held on November 10. This ceremony honored the accomplishments of young business leaders. In this special Alumni Spotlight, these alumni discuss how their experiences at St. Joe’s prepared them to excel professionally and give back to the community.

The First 150 Years: Limited Edition St. Joe's History Book

To commemorate St. Joe’s 150th anniversary, Joe Bieron ’55 has documented the school’s history in a new book, The First 150 Years: St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute. 1861-2011.

From modest beginnings in 1861 in a small building behind St. Joseph’s Cathedral to our sprawling campus on Kenmore Avenue, St. Joe’s has guided the development of each student's unique talents, fostering a commitment to academic excellence, service, and leadership in the global community.

The story is told in a 240-page book, containing over 100 recent and historic photographs. It features the early days before 1900, the Roaring 20’s, Depression and WWII years on

Main Street, and the more recent era of prominence on Kenmore Avenue.

Read about the school’s prominent alumni, long-tenured faculty, outstanding athletic teams, exceptional visual and performing arts programs, student publications, and other extracurricular activities which have made St. Joe’s the great institution it is.
