Higher Secondary Education Board (HSEB) recently pub-lished the results of grade 12 under the sci-ence stream and is pre-paring to flash the

results of remaining streams very soon.

A total of 327,000 took the examinations held some four months ago. Going by the past trends, at least half of the total examinees will pass their higher secondary exami-nations, becoming eligible for university study.

All the students -- 27,000 stu-dents from the science stream who have already passed their examinations and others who are awaiting the results -- are in a dilemma over choosing the right courses and colleges that fit to their career motives.

After Plus Two, there are many options to choose from at the Bachelor's level. The students have numerous choices, ranging from pure science, medical, engineering, paramedics, humanities, management and hospitality, among others. The students can also pursue foreign degrees within the country.

Nepali universities are introducing various new pro-grammes with wider scopes. They are also partnering with international universities to exchange modern technolo-gies and pedagogy.

Experts say the courses the domestic universities are offering are excellent. The only problem is the lack of practical support and the use

of technology with changing times. According to Bishnu Karki, an expert, education has become competitive, so the quality offered by private sector colleges is becoming better by the day.

Currently around 100 con-stituent and some 1,200 affili-ated colleges under nine uni-versities are providing bache-lor's education. According to the University Grants Commission, the government authority that oversees uni-versity education, over 80 per-cent of the university stu-dents is enrolled at the Bachelors level. Out of the total 480,891 students studying at the university level, 394,863 are at the Bachelors level alone.

Karki said while selecting courses, students need to understand that Plus Two is a school-level programme that is vastly different from uni-versity-level programmes. The Bachelor level is the entry point for university education and it marks the end of teen-age years for most of the stu-dents, who will soon be con-sidered and treated like adults. As industries, both manu-facturing and servic-es-based, adopt informa-tion technology (IT) sys-tems to make their busi-ness processes efficient,

the demand for professionals with understanding of these systems is on the rise.

Technology today has become an integral part of schools, businesses, hospitals, transportation, security, sci-ence and entertainment, among others. According to a study, 80 percent of the compa-nies in the world will require IT professionals by 2020.

Investment, both domestic and foreign, in the area of information technology is ris-ing by the day in Nepal. Several companies, from large multinationals to small start-ups, have been set up offering services like web develop-ment, software development, and information manage-ment, among others.

Nepali IT colleges offer Bachelor in Information

Technology (BIT) and Bachelors of Science in Computer Science and Information Technology (BSc CSIT) degrees. Graduates become software engineers, systems analysts, business analysts, technical support staff, network engineers, tech-nical consultants, technical

sales staff, project managers, web developers, software test-ers, computer user support specialists, network adminis-trators, database managers, information security ana-lysts, web programmers, android developers and many more. And, these are high-pay-ing jobs.

IT: InTegral parT of modern business

"The future of IT graduates is very bright," said Deepesh Nakarmi, founder and CEO of Kupondole-based Sharda IT Service Pvt Ltd. "The demand is very high in both domestic and international markets." He said fresh IT graduates draw from Rs15,000 to Rs20,000, while those having a few years' experience earn between Rs35,000 and Rs70,000, and some even more. Therefore, IT has become one of the most preferred sub-jects.

Ravi Sigdel is currently studying BSc CSIT in Apex College. He says he followed the footsteps of his elder brother Shree Ram, who, after graduation, has opened an IT solutions company and is doing well. "The degree is one of the most sought after at this moment," Sigdel said. "I joined after seeing my broth-er's success. People like him prove IT graduates have a bright future in Nepal."

Tribhuwan University, Pokhara University and Purwanchal University offer four-year undergraduate IT courses in Nepal.

Some of the colleges offer-ing IT degrees are Academia International College, Amrit Science Campus, Apex College, Aryan School of Management, College of Computer Technology, College of Information Technology and Engineering, College of Software Engineering, Cosmos College of Management and Technology, Crimson College of Technology, Deerwalk Institute of Technology, Gandaki College of Engineering & Science, and Himalaya College of Engineering.

Similarly, Institute of Management Studies, Islington College, Kantipur College Of Management and Information Technology, Kathmandu Campus, Kathmandu Institute of Science and Technology, La Grandee International Col le g e, Lumbini Engineering, Morgan International College, Model Multiple College, Modern col-lege of Management, Nagarjuna International

College, National College of Science & Technology, National College of Computer Studies, National College of Engineering, National Infotech Higher secondary School and College, Nepal College for Computer studies, Nepal College of Information Technology, New Summit College, Nobel College, Orchid International College, Patan Multiple campus, Pokhara College of Technology, Prime College, Shree Siddhanath Science Campus, Softwarica College of IT and E- Commerce, St Lawrence College and Texas International College are oth-ers offering IT programmes.

BIT and BSc CSIT both are four-year (eight semesters) courses that comprise of classroom lectures, practical and theoretical assignments and projects. They consist of several elective subjects.

The graduates are not only in demand within Nepal but also in foreign countries such as the United States, Australia and South East Asian coun-tries, according to Nakarmi, as companies outsource IT-related jobs to Nepal.

"Graduates enter the job market through internship and those who prove them-selves get hired," he said. His organisation and others such as F1 Soft and Dearwalk are always seeking qualified per-sonnel.

Ravi Sigdel said the IT cur-riculum offered here is of international standard and he learns to work around mod-ern technology. "Not only in college, my education helps practically in the daily life as we are in an interconnected world," he said. IT offers a vast range of job opportuni-ties and growth potential. It is flexible and can help in other areas of knowledge.

Several companies, from large multinationals to

small start-ups, have been offering services like web

development, software development, and informa-

tion management

RAJESH KHANAL

Bachelor in Business Administration (BBA), introduced some 15 years ago in the country, has still been a vivid line-up to pursue better career among the plus-

two passed out. Considered as an interdisciplinary, interac-tive and versatile programme for management students, BBA has been doing a good deal of business.

Of the ample choices in the bachelor’s level for manage-ment education enthusiasts—ranging from BBA, Bachelor in Business Studies (BBS), Bachelor in Hotel Management, Bachelor in Information Management, Bachelor in Travels and Tourism Management to Bachelors in Event Management—BBA is the most preferred programme.

The programme has suc-ceeded to replace the tradi-tional undergraduate pro-grammes in the past one dec-ade. Local universities, including Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu University, Pokhara University and Purbanchal University, have been running BBA programmes through private as well as public affili-ate colleges. Of late, pro-grammes affiliated to foreign universities have also been expanding their grip in the market.

Ashish Tiwari, principal of Ace Institute of Management, said BBA programme is gain-ing popularity among stu-dents mainly due to its approach to help acquire knowledge and attitude which are required in practical life. “BBA graduates can develop inherent quality of prompt decision making along with being capable to go into entre-preneurships,” he said, add-ing that BBA graduates’ capa-bility, however, depends on the quality of education imparted by the concerned institutions.

Established in 1999, Ace Institute has offering the BBA programme with affiliation to Pokhara University. Tiwari said they have also been revis-ing the curriculum in order to make the ciyrses compatible with the changing time.

The four-year BBA pro-gramme from local universi-ties costs Rs400,000-700,000 on an average while the cost ranges from Rs500,000 to Rs1.5 million for similar pro-gramme run with foreign affiliations.

Despite being more expen-sive than the traditional courses, BBA is still consid-ered as one of the best alter-natives for the plus-two gradu-ates. Tiwari said students should not compromise the price for quality of the pro-gramme.

Unlike traditional curricu-lum, BBA incorporates sub-ject areas that are related to the social sciences. “The interdisciplinary programme that also involves courses such as psychology, sociology and law, among others, helps students with the basic con-cepts and processes to under-stand people and their behavi-uor, and this knowledge in turn can be applied later on in individual and social setting,” said Yunus Sharma, BBA pro-gramme coordinator at Malpi International College.

Sharma said timely exami-nations and required regulari-ty and punctuality in the pro-

BBA gaining popularity gramme were the key factors for students’ success in the segment.

Malpi, which started the programme two years ago, claims to have achieved suc-cess in expanding its outreach among management students. “Use of interactive module classes through application of advanced technology, includ-ing interactive board, multi-media and experienced teach-ers, have has helped us move ahead on the path of success,” Sharma said.

At a time when the number of educated unemployed is increasing, which is often said to be caused by the mismatch in demand and supply of man-power with particular skill as well as confinement to the conventional practice of being dependent on corporate houses, the BBA institutes claim to have tied up with organisations for internships of students to develop their knowledge in the field of their choice. Sharma said they had reached agreements with a number of organisations, including banks and hospi-tals, where they make stu-dents engage in internships.

The eight-semester pro-gramme is also said to be of

the international standard that enables graduates to fit in various organisations both in domestic and international markets. The other factor that makes this programme highly sought after is that students from all other faculties can also take its courses.

Uniglobe College in New Baneshwor, Kathmandu, which launched the pro-gramme in 2009, is another uprising name for BBA study. The college runs usual BBA and BBA-BI, the bachelor degree with customized sylla-bus that exposes a wide range of subjects like banking, finance, economics, account-ing, marketing, organization-al behavior and project man-agement. “The programme provides students with a strong network of business

professionals and helps them build long-term relations,” said Nar Bahadur Bista, prin-cipal of the college.

Uniglobe claims to be con-ducting a wide range of activ-ities ranging from orientation programme to project work and presentations, case study competitions, seminars, busi-ness plan competitions, adver-tisement competitions, distin-guished lecture series, field surveys, educational tours, sports, management games and cultural programmes.

Along with the programmes from domestic universities, similar rush can be observed in the foreign affiliated under-graduate programmes. Yam Karki, executive director of Nova International College, said they are doing brisk busi-ness in the segment.

Nova offers BBA degree from International American University, Los Angeles, USA. The college claims that its stu-dents can have international exposure along with earning international degree at a cheaper cost. “Of the total 120 credit hour courses, students can manage to complete the total courses partly by visit-ing the parent university in the US,” Karki said.

The total cost of studying BBA in Nova is Rs500,000, which the college claims will cost up to Rs2 million if the students pursue the similar degree in the US.

Although the BBS has been criticised for being over-fo-cused on theory than practical aspects, the degree has not lost its charm among a differ-ent segment of students. The three-year programme is pop-ular for its low cost and has been serving as the best alter-native to those who fail to enrol in the limited seats of BBA programmes. Madhukar Pandey, programme director at Nepal Mega College, said the BBS programme was also being developed as a multifac-eted discipline in the recent years. “The revised curricu-lum and effective teach-ing-learning practice by high-ly professional manpower have made the programme successful in making students more interactive and career oriented,” he said.

Mega College claims that it has been offering internships, entrepreneurship skills devel-opment programme, practical computing and accounting skills and job placement under the BBS programme.

enced teachers, have has helped us move ahead on

Post RePoRt

Nepali students had no option but to travel abroad to pursue degrees offered by foreign univer-sities, until domestic edu-cation institutions start-

ed launching programmes in affiliation with universities across the globe.

The credit to start foreign degrees in Nepal goes to Budhanilkantha School which started Cambridge A Levels in 1985. But it was Islington College that started a British undergraduate programme in 1997. Lord Buddha Education Foundation became the first

college to start Bachelors pro-gramme in affiliation with an Indian university.

The trend of establishing colleges with foreign affilia-tion gained pace in the early 2000s, with a tremendous rise in the number of students fly-ing abroad for higher studies.

Records at the Ministry of Education (MoE) show some 15,000 students travel to around 71 countries across the globe to pursue higher education every year on an average.

According to Pankaj Jalan, chairman of International Education Providers Association of Nepal (IEPAN),

A big draw: Colleges with foreign affiliation

an umbrella organisation of colleges providing interna-tional education at the Bachelor’s and Master’s lev-els, the colleges affiliated to foreign universities are tap-ping the students who want to fly abroad.

The MoE data show 96 aca-demic institutions have acquired permission for offer-ing foreign degrees, with a majority of them running the A Levels programme. The number of colleges offering Bachelor's and Master's pro-grammes also have a signifi-cant presence.

According to the IEPAN, there are around 45 colleges in Nepal offering university edu-cation with foreign affiliation. They are affiliated to educa-tional institutions from the UK, the US, Switzerland, Austria, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and India, and 35 of them are under the associa-tion.

Jalan says globalisation in the academic sector has encouraged college operators to run programmes from glob-ally popular universities, and it became further easier after Nepal became a member of the World Trade Organisation in 2004. "We are offering the same (international) degree in Nepal at affordable fees," he said.

According to the college operators, foreign universi-ties keep a close watch on the performance of the colleges to which they have granted their affiliation. Officials from the universities visit the colleges twice a year to check the qual-ity of the education being offered.

As the qualification of the faculty and the teaching-learn-ing methodology used play a crucial role in determining the quality of the degrees awarded, these universities have set some strict criteria for the teachers appointed.

The teachers should be competent to deliver the knowledge as demanded by the curricula. Therefore, some of the universities even

provide training to the teach-ers. Besides, the affiliated col-leges should have appropriate infrastructure, including labs and libraries, as specified by the respective universities.

According to Suman Shrestha marketing manager at The British College, for-eign-affiliated colleges not only have helped stop Nepali students from going abroad, but also have brought foreign students here. He said there are around a dozen students from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and China studying in the col-lege.

"The most important issue is the students who go abroad return rarely," said Jalan. "But those who graduate here contribute to the nation."

He claimed such colleges are also helping curb capital flight. Currently, around 6,000 students are taking various university programmes in col-leges running with foreign affiliation.

According to Hari Lamsal, spokesperson for the MoE, the number of applications seek-ing to start international degrees in Nepal is increasing by the year. But the govern-ment has stopped granting the permission for now after recent controversies over the international degrees offered in Nepal. The Ministry has also directed the colleges to get affiliation only from accredited foreign universi-ties and asked the students not to get enrolled in colleges without accreditation. Many colleges which were running classes in affiliation with learning centres are now replacing their affiliation.

Currently, around 6,000 students are taking various university programmes in 45

colleges running with foreign affiliation from

different countries

Engineering: For rewarding and lucrative careerGAURAV THAPA

Engineering has tradition-ally been one of the most sought-after programmes across the globe.

It may not be the easiest area of study, but it contin-

ues to be in demand, as the graduates are more likely to have a rewarding and lucra-tive career. An engineering degree also opens the door for the students to pursue various other technical subjects.

Engineering means designing or developing structures, machines or devel-oping apparatus for perform-ing a work or applying it to conduct a task. It is practical application of the knowledge of pure sciences like physics and chemistry to solve a prob-lem.

Engineering in Nepal was formally introduced in 1972 with the establishment of the Institute of Engineering under Tribhuvan University. The private sector undertook it in 1994 with the establish-ment of the Nepal Engineering College.

As Nepal is striding

towards the path of develop-ment, with mega infrastruc-ture projects in the areas of hydropower, roads and infor-mation technology already being undertaken and several others in the pipeline, the demand for engineers has been increasing by the day.

With IT becoming an inte-gral part of modern business-es globally and amid the trend of business process outsourc-ing, Nepali engineers are not only getting employment within the country, but are also working for big interna-tional companies.

For an instance, Laxmi Khatiwada, an alumnus of the PUSET (Purbanchal University School of Engineering and Technology), is the Chief Financial Officer of Simplify 360 that works for fortune 100 companies of the USA and other parts of world. While, many others have found their place at reputed organisations like Facebook, Google and Wipro, among oth-ers.

In Nepal, there are 39 col-leges that offer engineering courses. Around 30 of them

are based in the Kathmandu valley. The colleges have an annual intake of around 6,000 students. A total of 2,249 seats are available for Civil Engineering, 333 for Architecture, 1,431 for Electronics, and 284 for elec-trical engineering. Similarly, computer engineering has 1,364 seats, while Information

Technology has 114 and envi-ronmental engineering 48 seats.

The Association of Engineering Colleges Nepal is planning to increase the num-ber of seats to accommodate the ever increasing number of aspirants.

Who can study engineer-ing?

In Nepal, a student who has passed Plus Two (Science) or diploma in engineering or any equivalent examinations can study engineering.

What courses are availa-ble?

The Bachelor in Engineering has multiple dis-ciplines. One needs to identify own career interest and

choose the disciplines. There are various specialisations like civil, architecture, mechanical, electrical, elec-tronics and telecommunica-tions, computer science, industrial, Geomatics, materi-al, structural, environmental, transportation, water resourc-es and geotechnical and sur-veying. A few colleges have

proposed to launch Aeronautical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering Architecture.

Where to study? There are four universities

in Nepal offering engineering prog rammes—Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu University, Pokhara

University and Purbhanchal University. They offer their programmes through various colleges across the country.

Course durationGenerally, an engineering

course is of four years (eight semesters). However, the Bachelors in Architecture runs for up to five years (10 semesters).
