I remember an old corny joke on a billboard wherein the designer fails to plan ahead while boldly reminding us to “Plan ahea . . .” Planning is one of the most important functions of your Board of Directors.

This year, Jim Collins and Chuck Stevenson have done a wonderful job planning our activities as well as bringing new ideas to the table. In that spirit, this year’s annual barbeque in celebration of our new members has been dubbed Oktoberfest. Not only has the event been moved up from November to October 4, Jim has added a bit of festive German culture through the event’s cuisine, libations, and music. (Perhaps, after enough bier, the music might inspire a bit of tanzen, too. Ja! Jawohl!) If you are a new member as of 2014, this event is especially for you. You are our guests of honor, and the barbeque is on us. A group photograph of the new members will be published on the cover of the November or December issue of Coastalaire. Don’t be left out! So, please plan to attend and get more acquainted with everyone.

Planning ahead into 2015, our CCCR bylaws dictate that in early August we begin the process of forming our next Board of Directors. Andrew Winterbottom, Sanja Brewer, and Ken Finney form our Nominating Committee. Hopefully, you have received and read Andy’s email asking for your candidacies and/or nominations. Candidates for election to the 2015 Board of Directors will be posted, and you will be given ballots for your votes by November 1. CCCR members in good standing elect the members of the Board. Specific offices are determined by election within the Board. Please, participate in this important function of our club. It is important.

Finally, Jim Collins is already building an event calendar for 2015. We are looking forward to an exciting year with new activities as well as some anticipated traditions. If you have some ideas for activities for 2015, contact Jim Collins or me. Our email addresses are listed under our pictures on page 5. We’d be very pleased to hear your ideas.

Editor’s Exhaust Bob “Kit” Kitamura, Editor

So the past few months have been both busy for us locally as a club and nationally with PCA. I chose more of the national path with the 2014 Porsche Parade up at Monterey and the Werks Reunion 2014 at Carmel Valley. Next year we are hearing from some reliable sources that Rennsport 2015 will be in Monterey again, probably in October.

For those of you looking to travel to the East Coast in a couple of months, the PCA Escape 2014 will be in Orlando at the Disney World Resort. It should be a good opportunity for those that have not experienced Disney World or an Escape. The Oktoberfest is coming up in October so be sure to look for an e-blast soon to sign up.

For those of you that are newcomers to the club, there is a coffee group of car aficionados, mostly from our club that meets both in San Luis Obispo and Cambria. The San Luis Obispo group meets 7 days a week at Black Horse, downtown on Higuera St at 9 AM. The Cambria group meets less often on Tuesdays around 9 AM at Cambria Coffee in the West Village on Main St. on the second floor. It is a great way to informally meet some of the people in the club.

Probably not of significance to many of you but to those of us architects and Max Hoffman admirers this was a sad passing. I

had found out early in 2012 but had not had the opportunity to write about it until now. The Hoffman Auto Showroom was a New York City automobile dealership office designed in 1954 by the celebrated U.S. architect Frank Lloyd Wright. The home of the first Porsches in the United States. The 3,600-square-foot (330 m2) space, which was located on the ground floor of 430 Park Avenue, an office tower at Park Avenue between East 55th and 56th Streets, was designed in glass and steel with a circular and sloping ramp for the automobile display; due to its limited floor space, it could only accommodate up to five automobiles at a time. Wright was commissioned to design the showroom by Max Hoffman, an importer of European luxury automobiles. When the building was commissioned its owner, Max Hoffmann, the son of a Vienna Rolls-Royce dealer, had intended to use it for his Jaguar dealership, but by the time it was completed he had moved on to Mercedes Benz and Porsche. Since 1957, the space had been the home of Mercedes-Benz Manhattan. In early April 2013, the building’s owners, Midwood Investment & Management and Oestreicher Properties, demolished the showroom to make way for a TD Bank branch office. A small group of us architects and Porsche fans had tried with a number of other Wright fans to purchase the building to create a museum but the price was in the stratosphere. There is more on this in a great article by Flat Sixes from last year, http://flatsixes.com/porsche-culture/porsche-factoids/frank-lloyld-wright-porsche-showroom.

Werks Reunion http://werksreunion.com/

Many of us were able to attend the first Werks Reunion gathering at Rancho Canada Golf Course in beautiful Carmel Valley sponsored by the Porsche Club of America. There were more that 500 Porsches

on hand to delight the masses of people that attended. The cars that were in the corral gave us as much entertainment as the ones in the concours. A few of us volunteered to help at the event, Hamp Miller and Joe Korpiel served as judges for the concours. It was nice to have it at Rancho Canada while the rest of the car world was at all of the other events happening during car week in Monterey.

I left San Luis Obispo just before 6 AM, with a quick stop at Starbucks in Soledad, it took just over 2 hours to get there. I followed a 356 B and 80’s Carrera Targa most of the way from Paso Robles, keeping it well

under under the 3 digit speed limit. Most everything was in full swing by the time I arrived at the event at 8 am with the corral filling up quickly. As I pulled in I parked by a 911 covered in rubber paint, I told myself this was going to be quite a show of Porsches.

More coffee……..

When Jason, Gary and I arrived at the event in the morning, we were once again disappointed that there was no coffee and donuts! We commented that someone could make some pretty good money selling coffee and donuts early at car

shows because most of the ones we go to do not seem to have that little amenity. Our Gathering of Friends show is one of the few. So the first thing we did was to go over to the clubhouse where everyone had to go to have coffee, where Chuck Stevenson joined us. Some of us already signed up for the box lunches provided by event but the option was a $15 hotdog at the clubhouse.Back to the cars, next to Rennsport and the recent Porsche Parade

events, I had not seen so many different Porsches in one location. Even Eric Meyer’s Rometsch Beeskow was on display. You will have to ask him for more details on what it is in the history of Porsche. The self-made Porsche celebrity, Magnus Walker, was there with a few of his cars on display. Although Jerry Seinfeld was a no show his cars did show up. His 1964 911, considered to be one of the first 911s and owned by Ferry Porsche, was on display.

Some of those members that attended that I had seen were:

The question of the day is, would you go back next year? Among our “coffee group”, about half would go back and about half would not. I think better food and more vendors would help the event a lot. Certainly “coffee and donuts” would have my vote! I have another event I am going to next year so I do not have that decision to make. Maybe one of you that did not attend this year can go and give all of us some input.

U T O C R O S S 2014CCCR -PCA presents

Teststrecke Porsche VII @ Santa Maria Airport

I finally found the time to attend my first autocross Teststrecke Porsche VII. I was on a waiting list to participate but never made it down the list. I was attending anyway to watch my son, Bill Thorp, and daughter-in-law, Kathy, run their Boxster— silver with orange wheels. It’s a stock 2.7 liter motor with suspension alterations and race tires. It started off like a good F1 race in that Bill drove his top time of the day on his first run out of a total of eight runs. He was 2 to 3 seconds quicker than most drivers during the day’s early racing.

As the day progressed more drivers got close but never beat Bill who had by then lowered his own time by a tiny margin. His wife just couldn’t get it together to close on her husband’s time. Bill, like the dutiful husband he is, got together with Kathy and shared his thoughts on the course and how she might improve her time. With Bill’s tips and suggestions, Kathy began to improve her circuit speed and soon was nearing Bill’s best times. Then on her last run of the day beat Bill’s top time by 0.6 seconds. Now Kathy had the top time of the day.

Now the story livens up again: Tom Dobyns had been running a Porsche GT3 but he broke a small shift linkage soon after his first four runs. Not to be deterred, Tom went home and pulled his Black late model Corvette out his garage, returned to the track more determined than ever, and began to turn in some

fast times. On his last run, Tom just slipped under Kathy’s 44.99 seconds record. As Tom passed the table where Kathy was handling the timing slips, he mumbled, “I gottcha.” Kathy looked at the slips and at some additional information and said, “No, I’m afraid not. You hit two cones.” With that penalty added to the Corvette’s time, Tom was now slightly slower than Kathy.

It was a great autocross, with some 72 drivers competing. The driving in the main was competent and everyone enjoyed themselves. The results, when all the dust had settled and the course shut down, showed that Kathy Thorp in the family Boxster was Top Time of the Day, Tom Dobyns and his Corvette was second, and Bill Thorp was third. The top three finished within 0.6 seconds of each other. Bill Thorp turned out to be a great teacher, maybe a little too good. And Tom Dobyns is fierce competitor. It was a great day for driving a very nice course and it was expertly managed by the team from the California Central Coast

PORSCHE TECHSpreading Rumors

by Pedro P. Bonilla (GCR PCA)... the latest from the Porsche grapevine? It’s very juicy gossip, which I truly hope is all true! There are four distinct rumors spreading like fire these days.1.- Porsche’s baby-Boxster, the 7182.- Porsche’s Ferrari-Killer, the 9883.- Porsche’s baby-Panamera, the Pajun4.- Porsche’s new platform

ONEThe baby-Boxster rumor has been on and off for over 10 years, but lately it has taken off again and seems to have more substance this time around.

It is rumored that the smaller-than-a-Boxster, new entry-level Porsche will be a 2016 model year known as the 718. It will have Porsche’s first production 4-cylinder boxer engine since the 912 from the late 1960s. Just last month, Porsche came back to the LeMans 24 hour race with a 4-cylinder hybrid-Prototype known as the 919 to compete in the big class. It almost won! It was in first place at hour 22 when it encountered drivetrain problems and ended up finishing 4th.

The unofficial reports say that the 718 will be offered as a 2.0 liter turbo base-model making 280 HP and as a 2.5 liter “S” model making 355 HP.

What’s almost as exciting as the tremendous power is the fact that the 718 is expected to weigh less than 2,600 lbs. making it a great platform with very high power-to-weight ratio. It’s rumored that it will have a manual soft top and few frills to help in keeping down the weight. Finally, it is expected to sell for around $40,000 just as the original Boxster from 1997 which had an initial MSRP in the USA of $39,900.

By the way, the 718 designation is in remembrance of the original Porsche 718. A four cylinder, open-cockpit racecar built by Porsche between 1957 and 1962.

The 718 had multiple variations during those years: The RS60 at 1.6L, which won Sebring in 1960, the RS61, the WRS first with a 2.0L flat-4, then with a flat-8 formula one engine, the 718 GTR Coupé with the flat-4 and then with the flat-8, a single-seater Formula Two (1.5L) version and a 1.5L Formula One entry raced by Dan Gurney.

A very versatile platform indeed. Let’s hope that the modern 718

comes to be!

TWO

A few months after Ferdinand Piëch became Chairman of the Supervisory Board of VW Group, it was rumored that he stated in a BOD meeting that he wanted a Ferrari-killer from Porsche.

Herr Piëch, one of Ferdinand Porsche’s grandsons, also headed Porsche’s Motorsports Division in the 1970s, when the 906 and then the 917 were developed and when Porsche’s total dominance of motor sports was established. He was then moved to Audi, where he was responsible for the

development of the Quattro platform and Audi’s all-out dominance of the World Rally Championships for many years.

From Audi, Herr Piëch went on to head Volkswagen as CEO, where he oversaw the purchase of Lamborghini and Bentley and founded Bugatti Automobiles. All of these brands he put under the VW umbrella together with the already established: Skoda, SEAT, Audi and obviously, Volkswagen. Several years ago, under his leadership, Porsche became part of the VW group as well. Now it may be a reality, the Ferrari-killer from Porsche. It is thought that the prototype, known as the 960 or the 988 (no name as of yet) is being tested with a 4.0 liter flat 8 with one turbo for every two cylinders (4 turbos) to push the power output close to 600bhp – more than the 562bhp of today’s Ferrari 458 Italia.

There’s no official news on the final shape of the 988, although it is rumored that it will have strong cues from the 918 supercar. The 988 should go on sale in 2017.

THREE

Not only is Porsche going after some of Ferrari’s market with the 988, but it also wants a piece of Mercedes Benz and BMW’s as well. Enter the rumored-to-be-released-in-2018, Porsche Pajun.

The name is a contraction from Panamera Junior and is intended to compete with the MB E-Class, Audi A6 and BMW 5-Series among others. It has been described as a five-door-coupe which should be powered by the same V6 engine found in the base Cayenne and Panamera models. Expect to see a hybrid and diesel version as well. The Illustration is an official Porsche rendering of the Panamera Sport Turismo which is believed to be the concept for the Pajun. It’s original launch date had been set for 2016, but Porsche’s other priorities has delayed this project a couple of more years.

FOURPorsche is also rumored to be switching to a new construction technique together with a new engineering and manufacturing platform which will use aerospace bonding, riveting and welding to enable the new structures to shed even more weight. Just as the new Lamborghini Huracán uses a carbon fibre rear bulkhead and center tunnel with an aluminum structure, Porsche’s new engineering platform is expected to be upgraded with aluminum and composite structural elements for the 988. It is rumored that Porsche will move its entire line of vehicles to the new architecture

by 2019. The new architecture is also said to be flexible enough to cater to both mid- and rear-engined layouts, coupe, cabriolet and Targa body styles and rear- and all-wheel drive configurations. The

recent engine failures that stopped production and delivery of the 3.8 liter 2014 GT3 are seen by some as proof that the flat-6 has seen the end of it’s natural development in terms of increasing its displacement and power output.

Porsche had said some years ago in an interview by a popular car magazine that in theory, the limit of the flat-6 engine was around 4.2 liters because the weight of some of the internal components becomes too heavy to maintain an ideal balance as it gets close to that displacement.

It is now widely believed that Porsche will expand its engine architecture in the sport cars as follows:

Turbocharged flat-4 engines for its entry-level 718, Boxster and Cayman lines.

Expect a 1.6L or 1.8L, a 2.0L and a 2.5L all with four-cylinder turbo boxers. Normally aspirated and turbocharged flat-6s for its 911 flagship, the Carrera. Multi-turbocharged Flat-8 (4.0L) in the 988. MSRP: $250,000 - $300,000. Flat-8 plus electric motors in the 918 hybrid supercar platform.

I can’t wait for the next few years to see if any or all of these rumors come to life, but if you keep spreading them they may happen. Porsche listens to you!
