Hello and welcome to the June edition of the CM17 Connection.

This month is the start of our summer (er hum!) and with it the outdoor season of summer time events begins. In Harlow and CM17 in particular, there are lots of events for you to enjoy: Fawbert & Barnard are having their school fete, St Mary’s are holding their annual Garden Party to raise funds for “Kidz Week” and The Gibberd Gardens have a Jazz concert to name but a few. Why not make yourself a cuppa, get your diary out and check out the What’s On and Community Pages, there really is something for everyone.

I wanted to bring to your attention a particularly noteworthy event happening at St John’s ARC. On Sunday 16th June from 3pm, there will be a “A day of celebration” in memory of Candida Tobin who developed the Tobin Method of teaching music. It will be a day of music for all the family with music for guitar, piano, viola, cello, trombone and euphonium. For further details about this exciting event please contact St John’s ARC on 442447 or visit the website www.stjohnsarc.org.uk.

We have a prize word search this month! Many thanks to Shwe Tan in Old Harlow for providing a £20 gift voucher. Just send your completed word search of summery Gelish nail colours to me (address on page 35) for your chance to win. Good luck!

Until next month, Lorraine

Dear Resident,

FUEL As regular CM17-readers will know, I have long campaigned for cheaper fuel. I was concerned to hear that the European Commission is investigating several oil companies for price-fi xing. If true, they have potentially added hundreds of pounds to the bill of every motorist. This is completely unacceptable, especially as many are struggling to keep up with the cost of living. I have raised this issue in Parliament, and have also written to the Police and the Serious Fraud Offi ce asking for an investigation in the UK. It is disappointing that the European Commission has had to take action on this, as only last year I led calls for the OFT to investigate, but their investigation was limp-wristed.

If found guilty, the people responsible must face prison, and the companies should be subject to a windfall tax. This should be passed onto hard-pressed consumers through tax cuts. When 800,000 families in the UK spend a quarter of their income on fuel, it is essential that we do everything we can to keep down the cost of fuel. I will continue to lobby both the Government, and the greedy oil companies, to help keep fuel affordable for everyone in Harlow.

DANGEROUS DOGSI was disturbed to hear the story of 14 year-old Brandon Elston, who was bitten by an out of control dog. Brandon suffered a 5cm fl esh wound and severed an artery, yet the owner received no punishment as they were not walking the dog, and the person walking the dog got hit by a fi ne of £250. I believe it is unacceptable that the dog’s owner escaped unpunished. We need tougher repercussions for owners of dangerous dogs to encourage responsible ownership. I have raised this issue in Parliament, and am setting up a meeting between Brandon and his mum with the

Justice Secretary, so that they can take this issue right to the heart of Government.

TESCOEarlier this year, Tesco made the disappointing decision to close their distribution centre in Harlow. Despite offering to transfer many of their workers to Dagenham, I was worried about how some of the staff were being treated. Workers were being asked to take a signifi cant pay cut (as an example, one worker would have lost nearly one-third of their pay) for doing the same job, and disabled workers were being asked to hit new targets, despite not being able to transfer with their existing adjustments. This left many workers facing the dole queue. I tabled several motions, and had a debate in the Commons on this issue, where I received a very positive response. Usdaw, the trade union, has worked night and day to reach an agreement with Tesco, and hopefully this has now been reached. This is good news for Tesco depot workers in Harlow, many of whom had spent over 20 years working for the company. However, if you have any questions, please do get in touch.

Yours sincerely,

Thinking about Audio Visual?

AV System Integrator, Mediacoms have put together a guide for home owners looking to install technology in their homes. So, what should you consider?

Your home is probably the biggest investment you’ll ever make. Investment in smart home technology can be pretty signifi cant too - that is why, when choosing a Custom Installer for your project it is essential that you make an informed decision with so many companies out there. However, making the right choice can seem tricky. Follow these guidelines and your decision process will become signifi cantly easier.

Background CheckAsk when the company was established as this will give you an indication of the number of years experience they have. Also check the company organisation and structure, as this will indicate how the company is run by outlining the basic line of command and control. Look for a list of previous clients and the testimonials. Has the company been recognition for its work?

ServiceAs well as the hardware, check the level of service you will receive. Look for an all- encompassing service from consultation, design project management, engineering, installation, training and technical support. What many people overlook is the aftercare service but it is important that you protect your investment and maintain your AV system in peak condition so choose a custom installer that offers post installation service and support to.

DemosIt is important that you ‘try before you buy’. Most well established installers will have demo facility where you can get hands on experience of some of the products they have proposed for you home. If they don’t have this facility they may have an agreement with a previous client to use their home for demonstrations – this is a great indicator of the company’s level of work as their client must be really happy with their system to consent its use for demonstrations purposes.

Industry Affi liationsChoose a CEDIA electronic Systems Professional member to integrate a customised electronic system into your home. CEDIA is an international trade association of companies that specialise in designing and installing electronic systems for residential environments. CEDIA certifi ed professionals are proven experts who are committed to higher standard of education. Hiring a CEDIA Certifi ed professional gives you peace of mind and the fi nest in custom electronic design and installation. Your home deserves nothing less.

Final Concert of 2012/2013 Season at St Peter ad Vincula, CoggeshallWords by Mick Rumens

On Saturday 13th July at 7.30pm, Harlow Chorus will close our current season with a concert featuring the works of Mozart, Schubert and Haydn. We will be joined by, the Brandenburg Sinfonia and soloists from the Royal Academy of Music.

The setting for this concert is one of our favourite venues, St Peter ad Vincula at Coggeshall which was built in the fi rst quarter of the 15th Century by wealthy wool merchants. Our programme will include Haydn’s Te Deum and Schubert’s Mass in G, however the main item will be Mozart’s Requiem & Symphony No. 1. Wolfgang Amedeus Mozart was born in Salzburg on 27th January 1756 and died on 5th December 1791 at a relatively young 35 years of age. He showed prodigious ability from his earliest childhood. Already competent on keyboard and violin, he composed from the age of 5 years and performed before European royalty. At 17 he was engaged as a court musician in Salzburg but grew restless and travelled in search of a better position always composing abundantly. He composed over 600 works, many acknowledged as the pinnacle of symphonic, concertante, chamber, operatic and choral music. He is among the most enduringly popular of classical composers and his infl uence on Western art music is profound.

Tickets £16 centre nave; £13 sides; £7 (restricted view) will be available by post six weeks before the concert, by e-mail at [email protected] or by calling Julia Dimon on 01277 362440. Tickets can also be purchased online. Credit card bookings (no booking fee) can be made at www.harlowchorus.ticketsource.co.uk

For more information about us, please visit: www.harlowchorus.org.uk

As part of the Harlow Music Festival, the Chorus will be staging an Open Rehearsal at Passmores Academy on Saturday 8th June from 10am to 1pm. We invite anyone interested in joining us as we rehearse the above items for the Coggeshall concert. You are most welcome to come along simply to listen and see what fun we have, but also anyone who would like to join in should attend for registration at 9.30am when music will be available. Full details are being publicised by Harlow Council in their Music Festival programme.

With Race for Life events happening all over the country and many more charity runs I thought I would share some benefi ts of running. Running is one of the most effective ways to lose weight and what’s more anyone can start! Not everyone is a fan of running however; some people see it as too hard, others may even see it as impossible. Nothing is ever impossible and I think the hardest part of running is actually putting your trainers on and stepping out the door. Even now, this is the hardest part for me. I fi nd it easier to arrange runs with my running buddies and friends than deciding to go out on my own. Here are just some of the many benefi ts of introducing running into your exercise routine:• Weight Loss

One mile of running uses 100 calories; just a 20 minute run can burn 250-500 calories.

• Quiet TimeBreathe fresh air and enjoy being alone with or without your thoughts.

• Better HealthRunning boosts your body’s immunity to illness. Run for 145 minutes a week and you will be 40% less likely to suffer a heart attack. It improves your blood cholesterol level, and it fi ghts diabetes, arthritis and osteoporosis.

• More energy/better bodyExercising will help your body work more effi ciently, with improved metabolism and cell regeneration. Your body’s lean

to fat ratio will improve, and your calves, thighs, hips and buttocks will become stronger and shapelier.

• Less StressRunners are less prone to depression than sedentary people. This is partly because of the endorphins that the body releases but also because they enjoy the benefi ts of achieving new goals and targets.

• Healthier LifestyleRunning can improve people’s sleep and make people think more about their lifestyle. Many runners prefer to eat healthier foods and also give up smoking.

• Confi denceYou will feel better because your doing something about your health, you will know you are fi t and motivated. Achieving goals you may set yourself will let your confi dence soar.

Not sure where to start? I’d suggest signing up to a local charity race for some motivation. You can feel great about your body and for the people you are raising money for!If the thought of running still terrifi es you drop me an email at sarahp_fi [email protected] and I’ll happily answer any uncertainties. I also offer bespoke running plans to suit your individual needs and lifestyle, which will ultimately help you achieve your goals.

policingourcommunityDuring May myself and PC Armor and PC Stapleford from Chigwell Traffi c conducted a speedcheck on Mulberry Green after several members of public raised this as a priority. Although only one motorist was found to be speeding and was issued with a ticket during the time we were there I am sure word soon got around that we were present! We hope to conduct more of these checks throughout the area when possible. Please be aware that fl ashing your headlights warning approaching motorists of the police speedcheck is seen as preventing the course of justice. Offi cers were all wearing high viz jackets and if motorists were driving with due care and attention they would notice our presence anyway.

Early in May I spent an afternoon in Newhall with Derek Barry who is Chairman of Harlow Badger Group. Firefi ghters and Police had been called

out as someone had tried to destroy one of the badger setts by starting a fi re at its entrance. Badgers are a protected species and it is against the law to injure or kill one of the animals or interfere with its sett. Anyone with information on suspicious behaviour near a badger sett should report the incident to police on 101 and call the Harlow Badger Hotline on 07751 572175.

Prentice Place - Anti-social Behaviour and Drug Traffi ckingThe community has raised awareness surrounding an increase in anti-social behaviour and drug dealing in the Prentice Place shopping hatch. There has also been an increase in burglaries at shopping hatches in Harlow. Police are working with the community to target these criminals. High visibility patrols will be conducted in the area with intelligence reports to be gathered with the help of the community. We hope with the response received that suspects’ addresses can be identifi ed. The Police will be working in partnership with the Council Housing Offi cers and Harlow Councils’ Community Safety Team to tackle these issues. We would urge anyone that witnesses this type of activity to call Police and the council. Your calls will be treated as serious and confi dential.Community Engagement Day (Prentice Place Shops)The Neighbourhood Policing Team in partnership

with Harlow Councils’ Community Safety Team are running a Community Engagement Scheme over the coming months. This scheme is designed to give the residents of Harlow convenient, local access to both Police and Council offi cers. A Mobile Police Station will be positioned in all the Harlow shopping hatches at some point during the year. It will be equipped with various literature which will be relevant to both adults and children. Offi cers will be available to the public to discuss any issues or topics you may need guidance on. Please come along and take this opportunity to have a chat with your local offi cers in an informal friendly atmosphere. A list of dates for when the community bus will be in your area is detailed on the Essex Police website under your neighbourhood.

Everyone at Potter Street Primary is now looking forward to Science Week 2014!

Potter Street has recently held an exciting week of science for all the children. The event started with a trip down to The Big Bang – an amazing science fair at the Excel Centre in the Docklands. A group of Y5 and Y6 pupils had the chance to visit and get their hands on some cool science experiments, and meet with lots of real scientists and engineers. The highlight of the day was when Charlie in Y4 and Mr Broad were chosen to star live on stage in a special show: Guinness World Records Live. They pedalled furiously on a tandem bike trying to generate energy and beat the other contenders. Unfortunately no world records were broken!

Back at school, water rockets were set up in the playground. Children in KS2 tried to work out the best launch angle, and how much water to put in to maximise range. Most of all, they just had fun getting wet! Mr West tried to demonstrate how rockets worked using two spinning chairs, but he ended up feeling a little dizzy!

Everyone ‘ooohed’ and ‘ahhhhed’ when beautiful tawny owls were set free to fl y around the hall. Specialist company Nightowls gave an impressive fl ying display with these magnifi cent creatures, and everyone had the chance to have their picture taken with one of the birds.

A fl ying visit

Year 2 have defi nitely got the science bug now. Their topic is growing, and they’ve been investigating tadpoles close up. The big day is coming soon when the children will take their tank round to our pond and release them into their new habitat.

Josh in Year 1 was so inspired by our experiments he went home and created a fi zzing volcano with his mum. The fi nale of the week was seeing it explode in assembly.

Henry Moore Music Week www.henrymoore.essex.sch.uk

thehenrymooreprimaryschool

For a week from the 11th February 2013 all of the children in the school were exposed to a whole range of musical fl avours and styles. From nursery rhymes to Rhythm and Blues, world music to fi lm soundtracks, everything was covered and enjoyed. The children participated in a fi lm quiz, having to guess song names, artists and in some cases fi lms, from the smallest snippet of music.

The teachers also shared their own musical favourites along with a story explaining their choices. In some cases these were amusing and often surprising!

There was plenty of opportunities throughout the week for the children to experiment with instruments, both tuned and un-tuned and also to explore how other objects such as everyday rubbish, household items and their own bodies could be used to compose music. Some year groups had music specialists working in their classes sharing their expertise and knowledge. They helped to create a STOMP performance with Year 1, a Blues song with Year 6 and encouraged Year 4 to use their voices creatively in chants and witches spells.

At the end of the week 3 concerts were held to give each class an opportunity to share and perform their creations. The standard of composition was high and all performed with enthusiasm and confi dence.

It was a thoroughly enjoyable week with some excellent musical treats!

theallotments

Do you remember the trenches we dug to take water off our plots? Well, we’ve now received instructions to fill them in or fence both sides of the ditches! This is not for the Health and Safety of site allotment holders but against the chance of some poor intruder hurting himself/herself in the execution of his or her trespass. We live in a mad, mad, mad, mad world! Trenches apart, allotment life has returned to being good with just enough rain and plenty of soil-warming sun to bring on our ground-sown seeds and plants. A piece of country lore you most likely know… If the Ash come before the Oak you’re in for a soak. If the Oak come before the Ash we’ll just get a splash! Last year the Ash leaves came a good two weeks before the Oak and, boy did we get a soaking! This year the Oak leaves have won by a country mile and so we can look forward to normal weather. Well that’s the plan…

Now I will agree that our apple trees wrapped in fleece and cardboard, in the photograph on the right, don’t look a very pretty sight but at least the blossom has not been taken by the frosts we had at the end of April. Some around Harlow have lost the frost-scorched blossom on their plum, apple and pear trees. Remember to keep an eye on the weather forecast as we can get frosts right into June. My fleece and clothes pegs are ready.

What’s growing? In the seed bed we have Early Carrots, Beetroot, Leeks, Parsnips, Spring Onions, Chard and Spinach. They all look really healthy and will be ready for thinning and planting out this month. Our Purple Sprouting, Celery and Courgettes are hardening off. The late Percy Thrower came up with his hardening off timetable… One week out in the open, but away from damaging winds, during daylight. One week in the open day and night and then the planting out. Of course if frost was forecast the plants would still be out but covered with fleece or similar. The Runner Bean plants look strong and healthy and are now ready to climb up the bean supports we’ve erected. Our French Beans sown under cover have been a disaster with only 20% germination but we have planted some more and June is just the right time to plant them directly into the soil. Plant some at

the beginning of the month and some more at the end and you’ll extend your picking season accordingly. Our Celeriac, Onions and Salad Leaves are doing really well.

Where’s your Celery, Jethro? How many thousand seedlings do you want? I have to confess that I planted some and nothing happened. I planted some more with the same result and so I banished the seed trays to an area of open ground on the allotment and sowed some more. When I went to empty the compost from the first trays onto our plot I found that both had produced a swathe of Celery seedlings! The third lot are doing just as well!

JOBS FOR JUNE

l Keep hoeing the weeds

l Keep an eye on white, black and green fly and other harmful insects on the plants. (I have sprayed our Gooseberries because last year caterpillars stripped the leaves from all the bushes)

l Prick out and pot on even more seedlings

l Keep an eye on the weather and prepare for late frosts. (Some plants can be covered with fleece but where this is not possible, spray with a light mist of water at dusk. The water actually protects leaves and blossom.)

l Sow Maincrop Carrots (away from where the earlies have been). The carrot root fly female has stopped laying her eggs and June sown carrots are less likely to be attacked.

l Sow Chicory, Kale, Kohl Rabi, Sweetcorn, Swedes and Turnips.

l Turn the compost

l Sow second sowings of vegetables. By sowing at monthly intervals we should get a longer picking season without a glut over a short period. Seeds last longer than it says on the packet. If you have some left over store them in a cool, dark place and use them next year (or even the year after!)

l Continue to earth up potatoes. (That is pulling earth up to almost cover the foliage)

Page 45: The CM17 Connection June 2013 Edition

Please mention The CM17 Connection when responding to adverts 45

Jethro Digs In Hastingwood

l Keep everything lightly watered. (Usually water in the evening except for fruit in flower which are best watered in the morning. This will help the fruit to set.)

l Pinch out the tops of bean plants. This will promote more vigorous growth.

Although June is the first month of our summer, it also contains the longest day of the year (circa 21st June). About that time our onions will stop adding leafy growth and the bulbs will start to swell. I marvel every day at nature’s clever ways and impeccable timing and feel sorry for all those who have no interest in growing anything. They are missing daily miracles AND it is now official … Gardeners are healthier, stronger and live longer too! I must go back to my hoeing to add a few more weeks to my life! Have a great month!
