the cliffs and Gary player Design recently announced that the cliffs at mountain park golf course is scheduled to open in the fall of 2013. this course, one of the only championship golf courses currently under construction in the united states, is set in a wooded valley surrounded by mountains and divided by the saluda river. it was carefully routed to preserve the site’s natural beauty and allow native flora, fauna, trees and grasses to flourish and cuts down on operating and maintenance costs by using organic materials and implementing eco-friendly design practices. this course will certainly add an exciting new dynamic to the cliffs’ member’s golf experience!

mountain park has been buzzing with activity since work resumed on the course in august. the construction of all 18 holes has been completed and the greens

have been sprigged with the goal of having them grown in to 85-95% before the course goes dormant for winter. Holes that were completed prior to stopping construction have been revisited and are now back to their original finished shape. The team is currently working on the driving range and plan to have it complete and sodded within the next few weeks. they are also seeding all areas of rough on the golf course and driving range.

Gary player has been involved every step of the way through the design and initial construction phase of the course and we look forward to welcoming him back as he visits mountain park over the next year as construction continues. if you have any questions about construction, please contact Jason Harris, Golf course superintendent, at [email protected] or 864.404.8275.

We’ll see you all out on the course next fall!

Van Bergen’s Bells

Harmannus van Bergen’s path to The Cliffs was not as direct as most.

were it not for a series of circuitous events, he’d likely be living out his retirement somewhere in the dutch countryside. instead, lucky for their friends and neighbors, he and his wife Peg now call The Cliffs valley home. and you can call him harry.

The van bergen family has a strong history in bellfounding dating back to 1795 in Midwolda, the netherlands. harry is the 6th generation of van bergens to work in the bell business. in March of 1939, at age four, harry traveled with his mother and father from the netherlands to flushing, new york to install two carillons (sets of at least 23 tuned bells) from The van bergen bellfoundry for the 1939-40 new york world’s fair. The purpose of the installation was to

publicize the foundry and sell additional bells in the united states. however, the result of the installation was far greater!

while at the world’s fair, harry’s father was notified by the dutch ambassador that war was imminent and the family would not be able to return home to the netherlands. fortunately, James self had purchased one of the carillons at the fair for the Callie self baptist Church in greenwood, south Carolina and requested that harry’s father go there to install it. The netherlands -> new york -> greenwood. Talk about culture shock! The family settled in greenwood and with the help of Mr. self and his connections with a united states senator, the van bergen family was granted citizenship on november 13, 1950. in 1955, harry’s father established a bellfoundry in greenwood, creating bell molds and casting and tuning bells weighing up to 1,200 pounds and selling larger bells from the family’s bellfoundry in the netherlands.

when it came time for college, harry van bergen enrolled at The Citadel in Charleston, partially for the military training and partially because someone needed to play the 59 bell

carillon his family installed there in 1954. The tower was dedicated in memory of Thomas dry howie, a 1929 graduate of The Citadel who was killed at normandy during world war ii. during hurricane hugo in 1989, the carillon experienced substantial water damage and needed a significant amount of work to be made playable again. enter harry’s fellow cadets from The Citadel Class of 1957. The class provided funding for the complete restoration of the tower and carillon and the addition of a practice studio and columbarium. by the 2002 Citadel class reunion, the carillon was finally a playable instrument again. a scholarship has been established to ensure that there will always be a cadet at The Citadel to play the bells.

following college and his military service, harry went to the netherlands to learn the bell business from his family there. he returned to greenwood, worked with his father and met his future wife Peg (who just happened to be in town to marry another man!). The bell business has taken harry and Peg from greenwood to atlanta and then to Charleston where they settled on kiawah island. after years on the coast, Peg found herself longing for the mountains and, after a visit to The Cliffs, they purchased a home at the valley and made the move in april 2006. since then, they purchased another lot and built a home, complete with a bell installation by the garage. however, the bells aren’t the only music the van bergens have brought to the valley. Peg heads up the Cliffs notes, a group of 53 residents from glassy, Mountain Park and valley who entertain at area senior living facilities.

There are hundreds of van Bergen bell installations across the country and the most recent one can be found right down the road in greenville. in honor of the city where harry van bergen received his us citizenship more than 60 years ago and in memory of his parents, he donated a set of 25 bells to greenville and worked with developer bob hughes to have them installed outside of The lazy goat restaurant in riverPlace. The bell schedule is currently being determined and they can be played from a console in the lobby of The lazy goat. at the carillon dedication last month, greenville Mayor knox white said one of his favorite things about the city is that there is something new to see and discover around every corner and now, thanks to the van bergens, there is also something special to hear.

The van bergen’s neighbors in the valley agree that the bells are something special to hear. harry sometimes turns the bells outside their home off. it doesn’t take long before neighbors are hounding him to turn them back on so they can mark their day by the chiming of the van bergen bells. consistent ball strikers, no matter who their swing coaches are, have a few fundamental commonalities right before they strike the ball.

If you’d like help on your swing or any other aspect of your golf game or fitness program, please reach out to a member of the cliffs clubs Golf and Wellness staff.

i can be reached at [email protected] or 864.508.1736.

i am using myself and three talented players you will recognize from the mountain region Golf staff to illustrate. We are all hitting a six iron.

the red line on the face on or left photo represents the low point of the swing arc. i draw it perpendicular to the ground at address from the left armpit to assimilate approximately where the club strikes the ground.

from the down the line or right photos, the red lines are “boxing” up the hip girdle. they are perpendicular to the ground from the backside or back heel and the right armpit.

in illustration 1 i have smoothly and rhythmically transferred weight to my forward foot moving my hips “belt” left and am rotating them around the low point of the arc.

the more seasoned players, Nate Olivo (illustration 3) and i have more bend in our left legs. nate has more than me as he really drives his lower body to help “cover up” the ball. as more of his body moves over the low point of the arc, it helps him really compress the ball on the ground which is one of the reasons he hits it so solid and so much further than i.

the young guns, Brooke Baker (illustration 2) and Kurt Adamski (illustration 4), have straighter left legs and are really using the ground to smack the ball. brooke really “covers up” the ball as Kurt stays back a wee bit more hitting it really high and soft.

these are great images demonstrating the proper sequencing of the body, arms and hands into impact. all four players learned their swing style from different coaches but, in the hitting zone, they all do virtually the same thing.
