COULTER BROTHERS FROM DRESS MATERIAL

TO

DRESSED LUMBER

Andy Kettle our guest speaker for February, kept everyone’s

attention with his program from Dress Material to Dressed

Lumber. It was really impressive the work and research that

went into his program. I found myself so interested that the

room seemed to disappear,

Andy works for a lumber company and he

explained how he got interested in the

Coulter brothers and their trip through

time as they progressed from selling cloth-

ing to lumber. He showed us his bookcase

that he build that is his pride. The top of the

bookcase has the Coulter stamp on the

wood. He was very careful to keep the

stamped mark of identification so that it could be seen.

Andy is a great speaker and an asset to the Historical Society.

He is also a member of Clarksville Civil War Round Table.

Andy is a graduate of Clarksville High School and Austin Peay

State University. He and his wife Ashley have been married for

20 years.

WINDOW INTO THE PAST Sandra J Stacey

What Would you find if you looked in the “WindoW into the past” in MaRCh Clarksville Chronicle (Clarksville, TN) 21 Mar 1874, Sat P. 3 The rain here last Wednesday night, beats any out-pouring we have wit-nessed since the August flood of 1846 as we remember the date. As high as this point a skiff had to be hauled through town, and launched upon the waters, for the rescue of a family from the upper story, in which they had taken refuge from the rapidly rising flood. Clarksville Chronicle (Clarksville, TN) 21 Mar 1874, Sat P. 3 The City Mills have closed for the season, after having put up about ten thousand barrels of flour. Clarksville Weekly Chronicle (Clarksville, TN) 10 Mar 1883, Sat P. 3 Prof. Levi's skating rink in the Opera House has been very liberally pat-ronized by the fun-loving young people this week Leaf-Chronicle. Weekly (Clarksville, TN) 20 Mar 1891, Fri P. 5 John Conroy, Jr., wears a St. Patrick cravat this morning, which spreads out like a blue grass lawn; its rich spring verdancy is suggestive as a cinch on the beautiful snow which still lingers on the shady hillsides. The robins are swarming around chirping their sweetest spring lays and the Guinea fowls are hunting nests in its massive folds. Martin Elder and Will Atkins are there keeping guard, lest he should fall victim to the town cow. Leaf-Chronicle. Weekly (Clarksville, TN) 20 Mar 1891, Fri P. 5 The shamrock was made the national emblem by an incident connected with St. Patrick's history. He was preaching his faith to a powerful chief, and his followers, when he alluded to God and the Trinity. The chief asked him how one could be in three. St. Patrick stooped down and plucked a shamrock from the green soil and holding up the trefoil before them he bade them there behold the one in three. It is hardly necessary to add that the chief accepted the doctrine. Daily Leaf-Chronicle (Clarksville, TN) 22 Mar 1898, Tue P.6 WHAT CLARKSVILLE WAS DOING Seven years ago, today (1891): The legislature, after a warm fight, which lasted a number of days, passed an act extending the corporate limits of Clarksville so as to take in South Clarksville, Skufftown other outlying districts. - and outlying districts. Thirty-seven years ago, to-day (1861): "Blind Tom," the negro musician, appeared in Clarksville. He was a mere boy then. The Leaf-Chronicle (Clarksville, TN) 22 Mar 1898, Tue. P. 1 A LITTLE FIGHT Engaged in by Two Negroes on Strawberry Street. They Tried to pass on the Stairway. and Both Tumbled to the Bottom. Dodger Johnson, col-ored, wasn't feeling in the best of humor yesterday afternoon, and in order to relieve his feelings be took advantage of the first opportunity to engage in open hostilities with any enemy, who presented himself. Nat Davis, colored, was the first to come in the pathway of Dodger and though they had been friends before that didn't make any difference. Dodger wanted a fight and he got it. Davis was carrying a crate up to the "Enterprise" office on Strawberry, and Dodger met him on the stairs. Davis told him to wait a minute and he could pass, but Dodger didn't want to wait, he wanted to fight, so without much ado he punched Davis one on the upper lip. Davis grabbed him in the collar and down came Dodger, Davis crate and all, landing in the street with Dodger on top with a big piece of crate in his hand.

Dodger gave vent to his feelings for at least five minutes - with that stick and at last they were separated, Davis having a bloody head, Dodger having his feelings satisfied and the crowd having had a good time. Judge Bailey fined Dodger in the city court $6 for airing his feelings in

such an enthusiastic manner, who promptly paid the amount for his

pleasure. The Leaf-Chronicle (Clarksville, TN) 06 Mar 1903, Fri Page 4 BLASTING AT ROCK QUARRY CAUSES DAMAGE TO HAMBAUGH'S MILL. Yesterday afternoon several rocks fell upon W. P. Hambaugh’s mill, badly damaging the roof. Last night the heavy rain fell through the roof, causing a loss of about 25 to a quantity of wheat. The rocks came from the county rock quarry, about 100 yards away, where the chain gang is engaged in blasting out stone for use on the county roads. The Pioneer Bemidji, Minnesota, 11 Mar 1908, Wed Page 2 Alleged Night Rider Killed. Clarksville, Tenn. March 10 Near Clarksville, Tenn. March 11 Near Woodford, about fifteen miles from this city, Brown Bennett, a young man, the son of an association tobacco raiser, was found in the public road in a dying condition with a bullet hole through his head. Near Ben-nett were two dead horses and three empty shotguns. It is believed that young Bennett was a night rider and was shot down by parties whom he and his gang had attacked and that his comrades, in their haste to get away, had left him dying on the scene of the fight. The Leaf-Chronicle (Clarksville, TN) 12 Mar 1908, Thu P. 6 A Sugar Jag. "When a cargo of sugar reaches port, the hatches are al-ways lifted and the bold aired two hours before the stevedores are al-lowed to enter," said a W. C. T. U. woman. "This is right," she went on sternly. "Otherwise these men would get on a jag, a sugar Jag. The air of the hold, filled with the gases rising from the sugar, would glaze their eyes, cause them to stagger, cause them to sing and shout, to want to fight, to smoke and to make love. I have seen stevedores, riotously, un-loading a cargo of sugar, as drunk from the fumes as though they had each put away 19 glasses of dark beer.
