The first bridge was constructed of

wood and stone and erected in 1308

at the expense of Abbot Godfrey who

was then the sole landowner of the

area. Upon the death of Abbot Godfrey

the wooden bridge became a ruin. It

wasn’t until the 10 June 1334 that

King Edward III on coming to the town

asked who was liable for repairs to the

bridge. Upon discovering that no one

was responsible he granted a license

of upkeep to four local men, including

the Rector of St Mary’s church in Orton

Waterville and Richard of Lincoln who

lived in Lincoln’s Place in the Midgate

district of Peterborough. The King asked

them to take a toll from merchants

bringing goods over the bridge in order

to fund its upkeep.

Gradually over time the wooden

bridge became so unsafe that in the

1870s things were getting desperate

and a move was made to replace the

mediaeval structure with something

made of iron. Eventually a contract

was placed with Messrs Handyside and

Co., of Derby at a cost of £5,426. The

engineer was Mr Fowler of London. On

13 December 1872 the iron bridge was

opened for traffic.

At the turn of the 20th century road

traffic had started to increase and

heavy flows of traffic in and out of the

city proved troublesome – especially as

the Great Eastern Railway level crossing

gates were closed against road traffic

for a total of four hours a day!

was accepted by the council at a cost

of £101,368. Works started on the

demolition of the iron bridge and the

construction of the new bridge and

bridge that exists today was Major E M

THE ONE for growth!Leading recruiter THE ONE

GROUP finished 2011 with its best ever year since 2004 and is already on target to repeat that success in 2012, with January being the strongest trading month in company history.

The reason for its success can be summed up in a number of ways. It has become more proactive and more immersed in the business community, and has also developed more partnerships to help its growth.

Managing Director Tristan Drane said, “The last few years have been particularly challenging from an economic perspective, we have bucked the trend and taken a proactive approach by retaining our people, forging stronger relationships with our clients, broadening our range of services and recruiting new talent and expertise to grow these new divisions. I’m confident we can repeat our success in 2011 again this year.”

Calling all Olympics fans! Can you help? Vivacity Sports and Peterborough Museum are hosting an exhibition all about the Olympics and sport in Cambridgeshire, which will go on display at the Regional pool in June. This exhibition will feature information about the Olympics, sport in Cambridgeshire and have a special section devoted to Peterborough’s sports stars, both past and future. The Museum is interested in borrowing any memorabilia and collectables from anyone who has a connection with the Olympics, to put a small display together for this exhibition. Perhaps you or someone in your family has been to one of the Olympic games and has souvenirs, programmes or photographs? Or maybe you competed? Or even won a medal? Any collectors who can help should contact the Museum’s Exhibition Officer, Karen Verdegaal on 01733 864714, or e-mail [email protected].

ORMISTON BUSHFIELD ACADEMY

Ormiston Bushfield Academy’s brand new building is currently under construction at Orton Centre, Peterborough. Academy Student Sam Ladds (17) is keeping track of progress for the City Scene, as construction continues.

I’m pleased to report that work to create our brand new Academy building is going smoothly and we are on track to complete everything by 9 July this year. In fact, 2 April marks 100 days until completion!

Over 138,000 man hours have so far gone into the construction. Work to decorate the interior walls is now starting. An estimated 17,500 litres of paint will be used in total. Kier Construction, the company that is actually building the Academy, has also begun installing a 400 kW biomass boiler which will provide over 70% of the energy required to heat the Academy every year in an environmentally friendly way. And the green efforts don’t end there; recycled rainwater will be used to flush the new Academy building’s toilets.

One person who can vouch for the progress of the new build is the Mayor of Peterborough, Cllr Paula Thacker, who recently donned a hard hat, boots and gloves to take a tour of the new academy building. I was lucky enough to accompany her on the tour and we were both wowed - when finished, there is no doubt that it will be one very impressive building.

Opportunity Peterborough, the city’s economic development company, has announced the date of its prestigious 2012 black-tie Bondholder Dinner. The annual event, which was formerly known as the Ambassadors’ Dinner, will be held at The Peterborough Arena, at the East of England Showground site on Friday 25 May.

The evening will commence with a champagne and canapé reception, followed by a four course dinner. Delegates will be able to network and socialise with fellow businesses in a relaxed, enjoyable setting and are encouraged to invite their customers and prospects to this exclusive event to support business development.

Entertainment will be provided by well-known actor, singer and comedian Shaun Williamson. The cost for a table of 10 is £575 and individual tickets are priced at £60.

When you are looking for a great place to dine out locally, do you base your decision on great service, attention to detail and staff knowledge as well as taste, choice and atmosphere? If so, then book your next meal at Oundle Mill, which is located in Barnwell, Oundle, near Peterborough.

My partner, Steve, and I were invited to sample the amazing delights of head chef Gavin Austin and his superb team. To make it extra special, we decided to stay over for the night as they have two fabulous, individually designed rooms on the property, with another 13 planned for 2013.

We headed to the Mill straight after work and were met by the manager, Paul Richardson, who showed us around and took us to our room. We have travelled to some amazing places around the world, but didn’t expect to find such a chic and decadent room on our doorstep! The Mill Suite is huge with an attic ceiling and a superb range of amenities and facilities, including a sumptuous, stone double ended bath. With a real flame contemporary fire warming the room, we immediately felt at home and relaxed.

Oundle Mill – Exceptional dining on your doorstep

12 April 2012 | Email: [email protected]

Prior to dinner we sat at the bar and discussed the menu and the wine list with Paul, whose knowledge was first class. Both are very comprehensive and the a la carte menu was creative with a number of unique dishes on offer. The attentive staff were knowledgeable about the food and able to assist with our choices. Steve opted for Gavin’s signature starter dish of tempura black pudding, hen’s egg, crisp shallots, bacon and devilled sauce, which looked like a work of art and was simply delicious. I opted for the butternut risotto with Norfolk Dapple cheese. I could easily have had this for my main; it was so wholesome and tasty. Other starters included chicken terrine, Brancaster mussels and fishcakes.

For my main, I wanted something light and different and the steamed plaice with herb spaetzle (a type of noodle), prawns and lemongrass nage (a delicately fragranced sauce) was perfect. Steve chose wisely with the braised Bridge Farm lamb. Both meals were presented beautifully and tasted as good as they looked. Other mains included slow cooked belly pork, rib eye steak and an upside down beetroot tart with goats cheese.

Page 13: The City Scene

13Telephone: 01780 783613 | April 2012

Having enjoyed an Italian crisp, dry white wine (Gavi Gavi) with our starters, Paul suggested we try a French red with our mains and we opted for a Corbieres from Chateau La Baronne, which was excellent.

Normally two courses are enough for us. However, we were recommended Gavin’s signature desert dish of banana tart with pecan ice-cream and caramel sauce, and simply could not resist it!! It had the most delicious flavours, without being too sweet.

The menu is very well priced, particularly considering the quality of the venue, food, presentation and service. With starters and desserts from around £6 and mains starting from as little as £12.50, making this the perfect place to dine any day of the week.

The perfect end to a perfect evening was the ability to walk upstairs to our stunning room where we enjoyed a small glass of the complimentary sloe gin whilst relaxing and listening to a CD that was prepared exclusively for Mr & Mrs Smith hotels, which Oundle Mill is a member of.

13Telephone: 01780 783613 | April 2012

Oundle Mill can cater for any occasion from a simple snack in the bar to birthday celebrations or weddings, it offers private dining and bespoke menus where desired. There are also meeting room facilities and fabulous outdoor dining options. You can have exclusive or part use of the Mill, which would be ideal for weddings, as they hold a civil licence to carry out your ceremony, and they have the most picturesque setting for your photos.

I have been the Head Chef at Oundle Mill for 6 months now. I created the menu with a focus on good British

fayre with a twist of elegance. I strive for a happy audience and empty plates. We have an open kitchen

HEALTH, HAIR & BEAUTY

Once again, with little warning, it would

seem that summer is upon us. The

erratic weather conditions that we now

experience, offer us no clue as to what’s

coming and then the hot weather arrives

like an unexpected visitor, taking us all

utterly by surprise!

However, whilst enjoying our wonderfully clement

weather, please don’t lose sight of the effects of sun

exposure. In just half an hour – untold damage can

be done to our delicate skin and when that sun-

kissed golden glow begins to fade, the premature

ageing, skin thickening, uneven pigmentation and

age spots begin to rear their ugly heads. What a

sobering thought!

SAVE YOUR SKINS! Invest in a professionally applied

false tan, St Tropez and Sienna X continue to rate

the most highly in my opinion, and then purchase

one of the new gradual tans, you are much

less likely to have any major mishaps with this

technique. The new Sienna X Tonights the Night,

has a 2 hour development time and you are then

free to shower to go out that evening-amazing!

Prior to the tan, if you hanker after that smooth

even golden glow but look at yourself and see

freckles, age spots and redness – don’t despair.

With a few sessions of skin rejuvenation, the clock

can be turned back and a fantastic youthful

base achieved. Treatments such as CACI ULTIMATE

microdermabrasion, as seen on Channel 4’s ‘10

Years Younger’ is perfect for this.

Get ready for summer at ZULA Beauty Sanctuary...

If your main concern is pigmentation, age-spots or

un-even skin tone then the Environ vitamin Ionzyme

facial is ideal for you. This unique facial penetrates

vitamins into the skin by 4000% giving you that

flawless glowing skin you’ve always dreamt of. After

a short course of treatments the skin is baby soft

again, totally even in colour and back to its pre-

sunshine state. Environ skincare and treatments,

using the highest levels of vitamin A, C and E really

are the future in skin care. The machine is totally

safe, yet can reach the basal layer of the skin,

thereby increasing activity and metabolism in the

cells that truly have an impact on the structure of

the skin.

At Zula Beauty Sanctuary we use Jane Iredale

mineral make up, which is fantastic for holidays,

they are waterproof, contain algae extracts to

keep moisture locked in and they contain titanium

dioxide and zinc that act like tiny mirrors to reflect

damaging sun-rays, like no other makeup can. So

after a flight or day in the sun, it gives a flawless

finish. Jane Iredale cosmetics are actually used

widely in hospitals for burns victims as the raw

ingredients have such a dramatic effect on skin

healing and rejuvenation.

MINATURESGet yourself down to your local supermarket to stock up on miniature

versions of all your favourite products, why take a huge shampoo with

you, when you only need a mini. I especially love the mini baby oil

(excellent for tanned skin) and dry hair shampoo – prices start from

£1. The Body Shop also does mini’s their divine body butter comes in

a smaller 50ml version for just £5 – Pink Grapefruit is my favourite one.

SAMPLESIt’s slightly cheeky, but ask for samples of your favourite products at your

local beauty counter, then that way you can just take the sample and

leave your big bottles at home.

EMPTY TRAVEL BOTTLESAnother good idea is to buy empty travel bottles which you can put

your own products in – then you can reuse them over and over again.

M&S do a good set for £5.

APPLY ONCE SUN LOTIONMost sun protection ranges now carry ‘apply once’ products. This means

all you have to do is apply the lotion 30 minutes before sun exposure

and you’re good to go for the next 8 hours. I like the Piz Buin 1 Day Long

Lotion (look out for buy one get one free offers) £12.99 - Boots.

TRAVEL STRAIGHTNERSElectrical equipment can be heavy and take up room in your

case, so check if your hotel has a hairdryer then that’s one less

thing to pack. Why not switch your bulky straightners for mini

lightweight ones, all the hair brands do them and you can get

some for as little as £7 – bargain.

Holiday Travel Beauty Products

A couple of weeks ago I attended the

Professional Beauty Show at London’s ExCeL

it’s the UK’s largest show for health and beauty

professionals. With over 500 brands featuring

all sections of the beauty industry, including;

skincare & aromatherapy, nails, tanning,

beauty products, professional supplies

and more.

I loved the OPI and

Elemis stand whose

products were all

at trade price. I also

bumped into Joey

Essex promoting fake tan ( l o l )

and Amy Childs for her eyelash

range which were all gorgeous.

The best bit is it’s free to get

in, so get it in your diaries for

next year!

REGISBeing a massive fan

of the Kerastase hair

range I jumped at the

chance to purchase

their special edition

gift pack containing three

items from the range (£34.80 – Regis) especially

as they come out once in a blue moon. I highly

recommend the resistance range it’s excellent for

repairing damaged hair. While you’re in there you

can get a free mini nail polish gift when buying two

KMS products.

Holiday FitnessYou are three months into the new you, you have a renewed enthusiasm for fitness, your alcohol consumption has been reduced and the cupboards have been cleared of all those naughty things. The Olympics are looking hopeful!

Just one thing? Will this all-go pear shaped on holiday? I find that I am actually more enthused to exercise whilst away. Less stress, sunshine and being more relaxed helps.

So let’s look at those opportunities whilst awayIt’s a great time to try a refreshing new fitness routine. For example, a simple early morning walk or jog along the beach followed by a couple of lengths in the pool before breakfast, is actually quite refreshing and sets you up for the day. I often try to do a couple extra lengths each day or if with teenagers try to challenge them, as this will make you work harder!

“Aqua Gym” is often heard being shouted (Aqua Aerobics to you and I), but this is a completely different workout on your muscles and is very safe (as long as you can swim) and low impact.

So if you are a habitual jogger then try this and give your joints a week offAny class being offered should be tried as this might give you a sample of something new, which you can continue on your return home.Alternatively if you want to take equipment with you, then resistance bands, water weights dumbbell’s (which can inflated on holiday) are a good option and will give you a great workout. These usually come with a mini workout guide, so you have no excuses!

TOP TIPS1. Write down everything that’s important in your life for increased immunity. Positive emotions will make you less likely to become ill.

2. Having a mug of something warm and milky before bedtime will help you sleep longer, thus a better you the next day.

3. Just 40g of chocolate per day can ease emotional stress.

• Lightweight dress: ideally, pick something in a

wrinkle-free fabric like silk jersey which won’t get

crumpled in your suitcase or travel bag. A sleeveless,

knee-length wrap style works for day or evening (in

either plain black or vibrant jewels with a pair of

chunky wedges), and is great for all sizes - hiding

those lumps and bumps, and also having a slimming

effect.

• White ribbed vest tops and V-neck tees: pack three

of each and alternate them for the day and going out;

as they’re white, they’ll look great with a tan or bright

jewellery (Topshop and Marks and Spencer’s are

great for these – and cheap too!)

• Thin cardigan sweater: this can be thrown over your

shoulders in the evening for the ‘mid-century

modern’ look or just worn casually for a daytrip

shopping with a cute summer dress (Debenhams,

Warehouse).

• Linen pyjama bottoms: ‘how random’ I hear you cry,

but these will really help maximise your suitcase space

as they can be used for various outfits. If you buy them

in either black or white, they can be used as a bathing

suit cover-up or light-weight trousers that won’t stick to

your leg in the hot weather.

• Sarong: buy in a vibrant print for a slimming effect;

wear it over your swimsuit during the day

if you don’t like the look of your

legs, or use it as a wrap at night.

It can also be tied into a dress

around the neck, and it is perfect for

chilly plane rides.

TRAVELWith summer fast approaching, you may

already be thinking about getting away for

a while, whether it is abroad for the first

time without parents or your annual family

holiday. If you’re planning your first big trip

abroad with friends, then my first piece of advice is not

to organise everything yourself.

Although the thought of being completely independent is nice, get your parents

to help with the planning and make sure that you have everything under control.

You don’t want to end up at the airport and realise that you’ve booked the

completely wrong flight!

I know it’s boring, but before you book anywhere abroad, look into the laws for

teenagers in that country, and make sure that you and your friends are happy

to abide by them. Finally, although it sounds silly, make sure that you go with

a group of friends that you don’t mind spending a lot of time with – it’s very

different living with someone for a whole week (or two) than just seeing them

for a few hours at a time!

University Open DaysIt’s never too early to start thinking about what to do after school or college, so

even if you have a few more years to go, why not go to a university open day?

You’ll get a good feel of what it’s like to go to university, and can start thinking

about whether the concept appeals to you or not. If you’re already certain that

university is for you, then I would definitely recommend looking on the websites

of any that interest you and booking places on upcoming open days.

Titanic 3DThe tear-jerking classic is coming back to cinemas, but this time in 3D! Out April 6th, prepare to be even more immersed in the action and be even more astounded. Let’s hope that it lives up to my very high expectations!

Foreign FilmsIf you’re studying a language at school, it might be an idea to watch a foreign film (in the language you are studying) at your local cinema, or to ask your teacher for any recommendations that you can rent or even borrow from them. Some will have subtitles to make them much easier to understand, but to get the most out of it try watching without – your language skills will be tested and hopefully improved, all without staring at grammar books for hours on end!

I can’t say I’m a great fan of the five door Delta’s exterior

profile though – it looks a little too bulbous at the rear for

my taste. That said, I’ve seen worse looking new motors

on the road and, for the price (just over £19,000), you get

a lot of car for the cash; everything is well padded and the

controls are smooth to operate. Luxury touches such as a

leather clad steering wheel, a refrigerated compartment

and privacy glass do make you feel that the Delta is a step

up from the average hatchback.

The interior is roomy enough for four and, because the rear

seats can recline 25 degrees backwards, your passengers

are also offered impressive comfort options. But the

boot is a letdown. It’s deep but not quite wide enough to

easily fit in a folded up pushchair. I should know – I tried

to load my little kids’ paraphernalia into the boot, and it

was a tighter squeeze than I’d hoped for. Never mind, in all

other respects this fairly unusual looking car does the job

of carting everyone around in relative style well. And it’s

different from other vehicles in its sector, such as the VW

Golf or Ford Focus. It’s economical too; on average, you can

squeeze around 60 mpg out of the tank.

With a 0-62 mph gallop of 10.7 seconds the Chrysler, mated

to a 1.6 MultiJet turbo diesel engine, is not going to burn

much rubber - but it doesn’t feel underpowered. In fact the

222 lb/ft of pulling power allows this car to tow a load of

up to 1300 kg (braked). That’s not bad for a hatchback with

executive airs. The oil-burner can sound a little less refined

than some new diesel cars on the market, but this is only at

start up and things under the Delta’s bonnet quieten down

once you get rolling.

THIS IS a comfortable car. During

my time with the Chrysler Delta I

drove it on all sorts of roads -

motorways, A roads, B roads, farm

tracks – you name it. Afterwards,

I always felt free from aches and

that ‘numb bum’ sensation you can

get after long stretches behind

the wheel.

On the safety side of things, the mid-sized Chrysler has won

a European New Car Assessment Programme (EuroNCAP)

five star crash safety rating. This is thanks to six airbags

fitted as standard (front, window and curtain bags on both

sides), and five three-point safety belts, with load limiters

and pretensioners fitted to the front seats. In addition to

that, the Delta is fitted with some pioneering electronic

systems to make life at the wheel enjoyable yet very safe.

Prime among these is the Absolute Handling System. This

is an amalgamation of various existing technologies such

as Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Hill Holder to ensure

perfect hill starts every time, Anti Slip Regulation (ASR)

which uses brake and engine control to optimise traction

at any time, and a system which cuts in to ensure engine

Along with its smaller sister, the new Chrysler Ypsilon,

the Delta marks the resurgence of Chrysler Group LLC,

which was formed in 2009 as a strategic alliance with

Fiat. Chrysler’s portfolio contains some of Europe’s

most recognisable vehicles, including the 300C saloon

and top-selling Grand Voyager MPV. Now with the help

of Fiat’s experience and knowledge in the small and

medium-sized car sectors, Chrysler can infuse compact,

more environmentally friendly models with the luxurious

character traits of its bigger cars.

WHAT’S ON

Ryan’s Football Preview

Arsenal V Chelsea, (21st April) Arsenal who have had to endure the loss of

captain marvel Cesc Fabregas, influential

Frenchman Samir Nasri and wonderkid

Jack Wilshire through injury have had a

problematic a season as manager Arsene

Wenger has had to endure during his long

tenure. The lords of the kings road have

also had a season to forget. A campaign

that started a promise of a new dawn

under Andre Villas Boas has so far ended

up with the blues being out of the title

hunt by Christmas and the sacking of the

said Portuguese last month. Wengers men

though, after dishing out a North London

derby beating to Spurs in February, toppling

Liverpool at Anfield and coming so close to

the great escape by beating AC Milan 3-0

in Europe are now playing as good as they

have all year and are desperate to pip Spurs

to 3rd. Chelsea now have Roberto Di Matteo

looking after team affairs and at the time of

writing are sliding towards missing out on

the Champions League. Nothing less than

3 points for either side will be satisfactory.

Manchester City V Manchester United, (30th April) They don’t come any bigger than this

guys! This match up is gearing up to be

the nothing less than the decider in what

has been one of the most exciting title

races we’ve been lucky enough to witness

in recent history. Of course much has

been made of the rivalry between these

two Manchester clubs in recent years,

particularly given the fact City’s rapid

rise to prominence has been driven by the

Billions from the Middle East. I’m more of

the thinking though that in Italian Roberto

Mancini, the blue side of Manchester have

a boss who has sailed this most difficult

of ships extremely well through some

choppy waters. One only needs to look at

the struggles of Chelsea to see that money

and powerful owners don’t guarantee

SPORT

an easy ride in the Premier League.

Some of the football they have played

this season has been a pleasure to

watch and the squad he has built

surely will lift the title at some point

in the future. Prolonging that wait as

ever though is a man who can’t be

described as anything but the best. Sir

Alex Ferguson has once again bobbed

and weaved his squad through a 6-1

reverse to City, countless injuries and

various snipes that this group are as

poor as he’s had in the Premier League

years at least. Yes the early Champions

League exit may be valid confirmation

of this but with David De Gea growing

in stature all the time, Rio Ferdinand

rolling back the years, (not to mention

golden oldies Giggs and Scholes) and

Wayne Rooney in top form, many now

see United as favourites to land their

20th League Championship. As the

great man himself famously said, its

squeaky bum time!
