Garrison Keeler on Methodists—Part II
Last month I shared this article by Garrison Keeler in which
he talks about Methodists. I really enjoyed the humor (and
truth) he told about us. I have listened to and appreciated
Garrison Keeler for many years and always assumed he was
Lutheran, based on the things he told about his life. But he also knows the
Methodists pretty well. So here is the rest of the article I did not have room for in
the last Circuit Rider:
“*Methodists believe their pastors will visit them in the hospital, even if they don’t
notify them that they are there.
*Methodists usually follow the official liturgy and will feel it is their away of
suffering for their sins.
*Methodists believe in miracles and even expect miracles, especially during their
stewardship visitation programs or when passing the plate.
*Methodists think that the Bible forbids them from crossing the aisle while
passing the peace.
*Methodists drink coffee as if it were the Third Sacrament.
*Methodists feel guilty for not staying to clean up after their own wedding
reception in the Fellowship Hall.
*Methodists are willing to pay up to one dollar for a meal at the church.
*Methodists still serve Jell-O in the proper liturgical color of the season and think
that peas in a tuna casserole adds too much color.
*Methodists believe that it is OK to poke fun at themselves and never take
themselves too seriously.
And finally, You know you are a Methodist when:
It's 100 degrees, with 90% humidity, and you still have coffee after the service.
You hear something funny during the sermon and smile as loudly as you can.
Donuts are a line item in the church budget, just like coffee.
When you watch a Star Wars movie and they say, "May the Force be with you,"
you respond, "and also with you."
And lastly, it takes ten minutes to say good - bye !”

Bell Choir Concert
The Celebration Ringers from First Lutheran Church in Colorado Springs, Colorado will be
performing in concert on Monday, June 3 at 7:00 pm here at First United Methodist Church.
Director Zach Schneider was formerly our Youth Coordinator and is excited to be bringing the
choir to perform for us. The concert is open to the public, so invite your friends and neighbors to
come and enjoy an evening of music.

DenUM Senior High Trip
Hello from your youth! We are traveling to Denver, CO the week of July 21-27 with the
Senior High. We will be serving the homeless, packing food for the needy, spending
quality time with those in assisted living homes, mentoring children in poverty, and
experiencing a hands-on education of what it’s like to be in constant need of every day
life’s essentials for survival. Please help us by hiring us to work for you via our Fountain

During the 2013 Nebraska Annual Conference Session at Lincoln St. Mark’s, June 6-8, a semi-trailer will be
on-site to receive items for the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR). Any of the seven UMCOR Kits and small case instructions for the contents and assembly of kits may be found
at www.umcor.org/UMCOR/Relief-Supplies. Please place your donated items in the Collection box in the West
entrance.
As of March 2013, UMCOR is especially in need of layette kits, sewing kits and bedding kits.
Bulk/ Individual Items from any of the kits are also welcome, especially items listed below:
Hand bath towel (15” x 25” to 17”x 27”) (No kitchen, cleaning or microfiber towels)
Cloth baby diapers (pre-folded cloth or plain cloth diapers only)
Baby sweater or jacket (open from the front; may be hand knitted, crocheted or sewn; hooded sweatshirts are

NUMB Ride for Hunger The Nebraska United Methodist Bike Ride for Hunger (NUMB) was founded by Pastor Bill Ritter in 1996. NUMB had its beginnings in a hog barn east of Creighton, Nebraska where Bill and friend Greg Bakewell were seeking refuge on a bicycle ride across Nebraska and it was raining and sleeting. While shivering from the cold, Greg and Bill talked about starting a ride of their own. The next year they teamed up together and started the NUMB Ride. The first NUMB had 36 riders and they traveled from Chadron to Elkhorn. NUMB 2013 will have 150 riders and is returning to the area where it was born back in 1995. It will start in Norfolk and spend the first night in Oakland. From Oakland the riders will travel to Laurel. From there they bike to Creighton and then return to Norfolk. During the 18 year history of NUMB over $620,000 has been donated to hunger projects around the world. Each rider must raise a minimum of $100 in pledges for hunger to go on the ride. You can help by making a pledge to one of the Columbus riders on NUMB: Ashtin Alt, Annette Alt, Andy Alt, Doug Kallesen, Peg Jeffres, Daniel Kuehler, Dale Murcek, Rocky Plettner, Bill Ritter, Blake Ritter, Roy Steiner, Jill Wolfe and Dan Davidchick.
Hastings Mission Trip Needs your Donations: The youth from the church are
going to be making care packages that will be sent to our military serving over seas. Donations may
be taken to the Christian Center or placed in the marked container in the Chapel Parlor by Thursday,
June 27. Items needed include: granola bars, nuts, hot/cold drink packets, macaroni and cheese
(individual serving), peanut butter (individual serving), dehydrated fruit, fruit snacks, mini
bagels, crackers (snack size), gum, hard candy, seasoning packets (hot sauce, ketchup, mustard,
salt, pepper, etc), can meat, beef jerky, toiletry items (soap, shampoo, comb, toothbrush,
toothpaste, mouthwash, lotion, etc- individual sizes), pencils, pens, unused greeting cards,
paper, envelopes, magazines, newspapers, men’s tube socks, , non-aerosol sunscreen, first aid
items ( foot powder, band-aids, antibiotic ointment, Tylenol, etc), money (to be used for
purchase of extra items for the care packages or shipping of the packages) Cost of shipping
each box is about $13- last year we shipped 48 boxes=$624.

Thank you to all of the parents and sponsors for helping out with the Youth Lock In. It was a wild success. From all of the
positive comments from our youth, I know that a wonderful time was had by all. I would like to extend a special thank you to
the following people for their help in making the event so special: Stephanie Bourek, Lisa Weber, Sandy Griffiths, Bill Ritter,
Dale Murcek, Ann Hardy, Anne Kallesen, Krisit Nelson, Nick Kaufmann, and our amazing hair dresser, Amy Williams.
Youth Sunday was April 14, and due to so many Youth and Adults the day was fantastic. Thank you to all of the youth and
parents who helped set up, greet, lector, usher, do children’s sermon, perform in MYTT, sing, and tear down. Thank you also to
the congregation for all of your support to our youth. It is because of your love for them that they are willing to share their
faith. We would also like to thank Pastor Bill, Doug Olson, and Roy Steiner for their accompaniment on the drums and guitars.
2013 Scholarships
On Graduation Sunday, First United Methodist Church recognized eight of our seniors
who received the following scholarships:
Megan Naylor has been awarded the Pam Zehring Memorial Scholarship. Patrick Keep has been awarded the Sara Rae Claborn Memorial Scholarship. Sarah Martensen has been awarded the Anne Kallesen Scholarship. Erin Burrows has been awarded one of two scholarships from United Methodist
Women.
Robyn King has been awarded the second scholarship from United Methodist Women.
Ashtin Alt, along with Haily Anderson, and Colton Martensen have been awarded
scholarships from the FUMC Education Department. These scholarships are each provided from separate entities.
The Pam Zehring Memorial established by her family in 2004, is a memorial to Pam,
and honors the memory of a loving young woman who touched many lives through her
smile and love of life. The Sara Rae Claborn Memorial was established by her family
and first awarded in 2006. This scholarship honors the memory of Sara Rae Claborn,
who was full of friendship and warmth. Sara worked hard at attaining the goals she set
for herself. The Anne Kallesen Scholarship was established in 2009 to celebrate
Anne’s 25th year of employment at FUMC. The United Methodist Women’s
Scholarship, as well as the FUMC Education Scholarship, are ongoing and provided by
fundraising of the organizations. We would like to recognize and thank those who
have made these generous gifts available. Without the continued giving of these
organizations, we would not be able to offer this wonderful gift to our graduates.
Congratulations to a wonderful group of students who will use these gifts to continue
their educations.

BEHIND THE SCENES AT FUMC This is Wesley Mouse with a report from my visit to the Christian Center. How I get
there is a long story but I was happy to investigate the place Suzanne and I had heard
so much about. Wow, what an adventure! After a bumpy ride and a thunk on the
floor I was at the Christian Center. I didn’t have my cell phone to tell Suzanne where
I was so I decided to investigate the place. It is a huge place!! In one part I saw tables
where those ladies I know sew those big blankets; I think those ladies used those
noisy machines at the church, too. My, they were busy but I scurried around the
corner fast before they saw me. Then I was in an area where there were small tables
with tablecloths and flowers on them. There were lots of chairs around the tables -- no crumbs tho. I did see a
machine that smelled like the coffee pots at church. Then it was quiet so I snoozed on one of the big couches.
Pretty soon I heard the young human with glasses working on that machine with pictures on it. He was very
quiet so I was too. Then I heard some more voices talking about food. Another door opened and there was a
room full of tall shelves of cans and stacks of food in boxes and many sacks of food wrapped up. No crumbs
here either. Then all of a sudden there were loud voices, lots of noise and laughter, lots of people running
around and the smell of delicious food. I ran under a couch and shivered in anxiety. Then the music started
and I did enjoy those young voices singing. This all went on for a long time and then it was quiet again. I did
sneak out to find some good crumbs. Then the young human started turning off lights so I hurried and jumped
in that big bag with all the pockets and buckles and stuff. I felt myself bumping along, riding in a vehicle and
then , plunk, I was back at the church. I caught my breath, ran very fast to find Suzanne and tell about my
adventure. I don’t know if she believed it all but I was glad to be back home in the big church. Editors note:
This, of course is a story about Nick Kaufman and the busy things he oversees at the Christian Center. The
backpack program, the Cup of Grace Coffee House, the quilting ladies, Blood Mobile and all the youth
programs are what Wesley observed on his visit.
Hopes and Fears for the Christian Center
Last September, our congregation gathered to decide if we should extend the
lease for their Christian Center. The decision to keep the center passed with an
almost unanimous vote. When collecting your comments we found where you
listed “Getting more people to church, increasing membership” and “Inviting
the un-churched.” We are happy to report that the Christian Center is addressing these hopes, and many more.
Beginning June 8th, a Women’s Bible Study will be offered at the Christian Center, hosted by Cindy Rohde
and Stephanie McLaughlin. This study will be available to all women. We are especially hoping to attract
anyone outside who may see the posted invitation “Walk-ins Welcome.” Women will be able to come, sit and
relax while watching a video, then engage in small group conversation. We heard you ask for a bible study
that did not require “homework” and built that in to a relaxing coffee time. Every time we attract outsiders, we
grow God’s Kingdom. We would love to create a Men’s Haven as well. Please call if you could help lead a

ARE DIETARY/HERBAL SUPPLEMENTS HELPFUL
OR HARMFUL?
Many people do not tell their doctor about dietary supplements or herbal medications they may be taking in part because physicians may not be as knowledgeable about supplements and patients may fear the physician will be unhappy about the patient using non-conventional therapy. It is important to visit with your doctor regarding the use of herbal supplements because: These supplements can interact with your prescription medications. Dietary supplements and herbal medications do not have to follow the same strict rules that prescription drugs have to follow by law. Herbal medications do not have to be proven safe by the Food and Drug Administration Herbal medications do not have to work or be clean, pure or actually contain what the label claims Herbal medications can be just as strong and potent as prescription medication. Herbal medications are classified as dietary supplements so that they don’t have to undergo tight scrutiny like prescription drugs. Pharmacists use computer software to alert them to potentially dangerous drug interactions. These computer programs don’t recognize adverse interactions with herbal/dietary products.

MISSION MARKET IS OPEN! If you are blessed with the ability and space to grow a garden and
have excess produce you don’t want to waste, or are thinning out
or replacing a flower garden and have plants or cutting in excess,
please bring them to church and put them in the bins in the
shelving unit by the elevator. If you cannot have a garden, but
would enjoy some fresh produce, please take whatever you would
like and put a donation in the Mission Market Church bank on top
of the shelving unit. The proceeds will be used to help with
various Mission projects and any left-over produce is taken to the
Rescue Mission, Rainbow Center or Center for Survivors. If you

GUIDELINES FOR ANNOUNCEMENTS DURING WORSHIP SERVICES
1. All announcements need to be submitted, in writing, to the Church office by Wednesday of each week
so that they can be included in the bulletin and in the Power Point slides.
2. Announcements that will be made from the pulpit should pertain to the whole congregation. (Examples
are; new Bible studies, new Alpha sessions, public meals such as the soup supper and the Valentine’s
Day dinner.)
a. Groups that want to make announcements from the pulpit need to contact the church office by
Wednesday so that time can be allotted during the service for each announcement.
b. The Worship Committee recommends that the groups plan their announcements and consider:
i. Keeping the announcement brief – usually a minute is long enough to share the
message.
ii. Using a videotaped announcement to provide a consistent message at all three
services.
Attention everyone that enjoys singing, playing an instrument or just
glorifying God with their music. I have started contacting people to
share their talents during the worship services this Summer. Each
weekend there are three services that needs someone to share their
music. There is a Saturday night service at 6:00, an early Sunday
morning service at 8:00 and a second service on Sunday morning at
10:30. If you want to sing, you can sing to a CD or have someone
accompany you. The schedule will fill up quickly. The earlier you
contact me, the more options you will have for which service is

[email protected]. Let’s fill the church with special music every
weekend from June through August and show how many ways we
can praise our Lord and God.
Finance Committee is seeking volunteers to support the Scrip program by performing
the weekly reconciliation of sales. In an effort to keep the Scrip inventory more secure,
the weekly reconciliation process will now be done in the church office. Individuals
must be available for 2-3 hours on Monday mornings and need only basic computer/
spreadsheet skills. Computer and training will be provided. You may work as an
individual or as a team of two.
