1 Market Size
A major increase in specific excise in 2011 resulted in a hike in prices and a fall of 4.6% in cigarette
sales while further changes to the tax system depressed sales a further 4.8% with a hike in specific
excise duty at the beginning of 2013, as well as later on that year, sales fell a further 12.5%.

2 Production and Trade
In April 2014 Philip Morris announced its intention to shut the Bergen-op-Zoom facility citing the recent
decline in European cigarette sales. Brands such as Marlboro, L&M and Chesterfield are produced at
the site which is set to cease production in October 2014. Prior to the closure of Bergen-op-Zoom and
Zevenaar, the large majority of cigarettes produced were filtered, these accounting for over 88% of
volume in 2004.
