30 April 2015

The Center for International and European Studies (CIES) at

Kadir Has University, the Hollings Center for International

Dialogue, and the EastWest Institute co-organized a panel

discussion on Key Strategies in Countering Extremism:

Experiences from the MENA region and Pakistan on 30 April

from Middle East and Africa Center, United States Institute of

Peace, Shafqat Mehmood from PAIMAN (Pakistan Initiative for

Mothers and Newborns) Alumni Trust and Prof. Serhat Güvenç

from Kadir Has University.

The abuse of religion as a pretense to justify violence is not a new

phenomenon, but it has come very close to home for a lot of

people in the past few years. The frequency of violent attacks

making headlines is very discomforting, and is proof that extremist

interpretations of religion are spreading wide. Different opinions

abound on the root causes of extremism and its appeal, but

international coordination on strategies to counter it are relatively

recent. Panelists discussed these strategies and the role of

different actors could play in preventing the appeal of extremist

ideologies.
