Dear friends in Christ, Do you remember your first bicycle? I learned to ride on my brother’s old 3-speed. I wasn’t very good at changing gears so I peddled many miles in first gear. I was lucky enough to win $13.20 answering a local radio show call in question. That paid for half of my first new bicycle. It had a banana seat and high-rise handlebars. I used to ride it back and forth 5 miles to Little League baseball practice. Those 10 mile round trips were probably the longest bicycle rides I ever made. On June 14 our Church is hosting a group of bicyclists who are peddling 2,887 miles from Key West, FL to the Canadian border! Come out and join them for a covered dish super and learn about this “Bike & Build” project. If you can provide bed and breakfast for one or two of the cyclists, please contact Mike Claxton at 477-3430. With the death of Gene Shannon, a WWII Veteran, who died a month short of his 98th birthday, we lost our oldest male church member. Can you help me figure out who is now our oldest male? If may be Frank Couvillon who celebrated his 89th birthday this Spring. Let me know if there is anyone older. Our 8:30 Beach Worship Services have started at the Driftwood Access on Ocean Isle Beach. Remember to bring your own chair, our volunteers will provide coffee or lemonade and a doughnut! This is the 52nd year that your church family has been involved with this vital ministry. Thank you for your faithful support. The next Communion Service at our 11 worship will be on Sunday, July 1. Circle that date on next month’s calendar. Please remember to share your recommendations for new Deacons and Elders with this year’s Nominations
Committee. The box for your forms is in the Narthex.

Why would I spend the money now instead of when I actually need a niche?
Making plans for yourself is a way of making your intentions known to your family.
This subject can be a delicate one, and families may have difficulty discussing plans
for after death. Yet, most people cannot predict the circumstances of their deaths.
Reservation for inurnment in a niche or for a memorial plaque could be greatly
appreciated by your family. If you would like to speak with someone about your
plans or your questions, please call the church office or Betsy Braddock.
Niches are available for one or two sets of cremated remains.
Memorial Wall plaques can be reserved in honor of or in memory of someone.

Bike & Build Potluck Sponsored by the Mission & Benevolence Committee,
Shallotte Presbyterian Church will host participants
in the 2018 Keys to Canada Bike & Build on
Thursday, June 14. We hope you will join us for a
potluck dinner at 6 PM in the Fellowship Hall where
we will enjoy scrumptious food and learn more about
the Bike & Build program. On the right, see the route
that the bikers are following as they also help build
affordable housing on their journey.
Also, the Committee is seeking assistance to provide
overnight housing for the bikers on June 14 and
breakfast in the home on June 15. You will then bring
the bikers back to SPC on the morning of June 15
where they will continue their journey. Their next stop
is Wilmington where they will spend time working on
building housing for others. If you can assist with this
mission opportunity, please phone Mike Claxton at

As we approach the anniversary of our son's boating accident, our hearts overflow with gratitude at the outpouring of love and encouragement the Martin family has received over the past year. We remain grateful that God spared the life of our son and sustained us all
through the recovery period. We were amazed by support you lavished on us and your encouragement means more than words can capture. God showed His love for us through your kindness. Your gift cards helped us stay nourished or provided a quick respite at Starbucks;
your cards made us laugh and cry; your calls and visits brightened our day; and your powerful prayers helped most of all. We know that God will remain true to His promise in
Hebrews 6:10 that He is not unjust to forget your work and labor of love in ministering to us.
The recovery process was not smooth or without its ups and downs. But God strengthened us as He stretched us. Our family is closer to one another and to God and we are grateful to be in
a body of believers that lived out Philippians 2:4 by looking out for our needs and
Hebrews 10:24 by pouring out love and good deeds.
Our family was honored to be the recipients of your generosity, service and love.

met at the home of Valerie Blanchard on Tuesday, May 8. There were 7
members present. Wendy Hughes led the Bible Study. Members brought in food donations for
Wings Backpack Ministry as a May mission project.

one guest present. $107 was collected for the Food Pantry. Anna O’Brian led the Bible Study.
Books were collected to donate to donate to Churches in need. Missions have been a strong
focus for the ladies of Circle #1. All agreed that it had been a highly successful year.

guest present. Alice Hedrick gave an interesting and informative Bible Study Lesson which
brought together all the lessons from Cloud of Witnesses this year. Donna Trest informed the
group that about $1700 had been collected through the love offering for the Helping Hands
Fund. Hope Harbor was delighted to receive craft items last month. Ladies brought food and
cash donations for the Wings Backpack Ministries this month. This program does operate
during the summer for those in need. Gail Thomas gave information on “Bike and Build.”
Shallotte Presbyterian is hosting this group on June 14 and 15.
The Shallotte Presbyterian Women have had a very successful year of fellowship and Bible
study. They have sponsored mission projects to benefit church members and the community at
large. Meetings will resume in the fall. If you have been wondering how to get involved in the
life of Shallotte Presbyterian Church, consider joining one of these ladies’ groups. It is
guaranteed to be a rewarding experience!

Do you notice people using the phrase “it is what it is!” usually followed by a sigh? Clients may relate a difficult
situation that seems hopeless and then look up and shrug, “it is what it is.” In other words, I take what they are saying
as, “there’s no answer. I just have to put up with it.” That’s certainly a negative thought!
As negative thoughts creep into our minds, we may notice irritability also starts to creep in. Auto-pilot takes over,
leading us into deeper negativity. Soon it’s a swirling downward spiral of disrupting feelings that crashes in
hopelessness with the words, “it is what it is.”
I suggest adding another piece: “it is what it is, while it is.” Adding those three words can pop us out of the auto-pilot
corkscrew by reminding us what we are feeling is not permanent. If you remind yourself it is temporary, you give
yourself a moment of space. That space is a chance to unravel from the knot of negativity. Freedom from the knot,
even for a moment, can let you care more about yourself.
Experiment! Next time you shrug at something that feels hopeless, tell yourself, “it is what it is, while it is.” See if it
breaks up an automatic reaction just long enough for you to discover that you can be kind and compassionate toward
yourself.
