Xavier High School, Middletown, CT, is pleased to announce that Thomas Cullen, a 10th Grade Student, has been named to
the 3rd Quarter Honor Roll. Thomas is the son of parishioners Shawn and Heather Cullen. Congratulations Thomas on achieving this accomplishment!
On Saturday, May 6th, at 11:00 a.m., our 3rd Graders will be receiving their First Holy Communion. This year we have 27 children, who have been brought to this point in their
faith journey by their dedicated parents and their catechists, Barbara Carpenter and Jennifer Hussey.
The children will be attending the 10:30 a.m. Mass on Sunday, May 7th, in their First Communion clothes for the Crowning of Mary. This is a very special time for these families and the children as they embark on what will be a life-long relationship with Jesus.
From the Desk of Our Pastoral Associate The Third Sunday of Easter For us, who have been born on this side of the resurrection event, the Emmaus story is a source of encouragement. It is heart-warming to believe that our risen Lord would meet us on those roads in life where we retreat when life is just too much for us. It is a witness story of how our God brings hope and nourishment to our spirits, especially during life’s biggest disappointments, challenges and losses. For us the Eucharist, celebrated every day in our church is a place where we receive nourishment for our spirits, not only in times of disappointment but at all times. Even though it is not the first sacrament celebrated in the life of the believer, the Eucharist is considered by Catholics as preeminent among all the seven sacraments. It is described by the Second Vatican Council as “the source and summit of the Christian life” (Lumen gentium 11). Although Jesus himself instituted this sacrament on the night before he died, it is not a drama reenacting the Last Supper with the disciples. The Eucharist celebrates the whole of the paschal mystery: the suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus in which we continue to share by faith and baptism. In other words, the celebration of the Eucharist expresses our whole faith, in a unique ritual summation. In celebrating the Eucharist, we make present again the sacrifice of Jesus on the Cross. By his own action and by the power of the Holy Spirit the gifts of bread and wine are transformed into the body and blood of Christ, the self-sacrifice which he offered on our behalf to save us by suffering and death (Catechism of the Catholic Church 1357). At the same time, the celebration of the Eucharist is also a banquet of praise and thanksgiving. The very word in Greek, eucharistein, means “to give thanks.” In the Eucharist, the Church expresses gratefulness to God for all the blessings shown us, first, through creation, and, more importantly, through the redemption accomplished in Christ. Sent forth from the Eucharist, we are encouraged to carry on the mission of Christ. The common name for the celebration, the Mass, comes from missa, the Latin word meaning “to send.” Thus the liturgy concludes with the faithful being sent forth to offer our lives for the sake of the gospel, to spread the Good News in the world. Altar Server Training: We will have our next training for new altar servers April 30th and May 7th after the 10:30 a.m. Mass. Students, who are in the third grade or older, are encouraged to participate. Please call Pat Piano with questions or to sign up. This is a wonderful way to involve your child in learning more about the Mass and their church. Please consider this ministry for your child.
Eucharistic Adoration Intentions: Intentions will be accepted and prayed for as part of Eucharistic Adoration each Wednesday. There will be a basket at the foot of the altar on Wednesday morning for people to place written intentions in that day. These intentions will be prayed for all during that day’s Eucharistic Adoration and at Mass the next day. We welcome your intentions.
Lectionary Scripture Study: Each Tuesday morning at 8:00 a.m., we offer an opportunity to share in a discussion of the scripture readings for the upcoming weekend. No prior understanding of scripture is needed. Come meet thoughtful people sharing their life and faith. Everyone is welcome!!!
Attention Parents: Have you recently had a baby baptized? Has your child recently received their First Holy Communion, your teen, the Sacrament of Confirmation? Are you aware more than ever of the awesome task of raising a child in the Catholic faith? Sometimes parents, for one reason or another, have neglected their own faith life, the life that is passed on from one generation to the next. Is it time for you to consider becoming a Catholic, or becoming more fully initiated into the Catholic Church by your reception of First Holy Communion or Confirmation? For more information, call Pat Piano, Pastoral Associate, at the rectory, 860-232-8594.
Baptism Preparation: All those having first babies baptized are asked to attend an informational class. Our next class will be held on Monday, May 1st, at 6:00 p.m. in Saint Timothy Middle School. For more information, please contact Pat Piano 860-232-8594; or [email protected]
Pastoral Care: If you or someone you know would like to receive Holy Communion at home or while in the hospital, please call Pat Piano at the rectory, 860-232-8594. We have a team of care givers who are most willing to come to your home.
RCIA: What does it mean to be a Catholic? Have you or someone you know ever asked that question? Have you ever thought about becoming a Catholic or learning more about the Catholic faith? We welcome inquiry and are happy to meet with anyone to offer suggestions about how those questions can become reality. Call Pat Piano at 860-232-8594.

Student of the Week
When pondering the attributes of the student of the week, I recalled this quote from Winston Churchill - "Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference." This student of the week handles not only successes with a positive attitude, but also challenges. She always goes the extra mile, never stops trying, and continues to work hard. Showing enthusiasm and a love for learning, working hard, asking questions that challenge and that help others learn, are qualities that make this student, the student of the week. She displays maturity beyond her years. This student is Grace Morganthaler and I thank her. Mrs. Gillen, Grammar Teacher Grades 6, 7 and 8
