A MESSAGE FROM OUR PASTOR
Dear Holy Apostles Parish Family,
This week we began the Year of Mercy. I am
excited to take the Pope's lead as we take
this opportunity to look within to see how we
need to be healed and forgiven and who we
need to forgive and allow to heal. Archbishop
Cupich has taken the lead with an interfaith
prayer for peace and mercy in Chicago on
Tuesday night.
I went to see the movie, Spotlight, a couple
weeks ago. It is about the sex scandal in the
Archdiocese of Boston. It is very well done
and shows how we are all vulnerable to al-
lowing things to happen without appropriate
accountability. It shows how the church, the
Cardinal, the police, lawyers, judges and
press all failed to address the situation until
outsiders asked questions.
I remember in 2002, I gave a talk to a group
of 150 women at St. Catherine Church in
Dundee. I started by saying that I am sorry if
I or any of my brothers had hurt them. A
woman came up to me and said, "I am from
Boston and no one has said they were sorry."
We did not because the lawyers told us not
to. It is time for us to do what's right and
apologize so we can learn, move on and heal.
This is what mercy calls us to.
How can we all look at ourselves, say I'm sor-
ry to who we have hurt and allow others to
heal. Our faith calls us to see the world in a
different way. I am sorry if I have hurt any of you
in any way.
Have a blessed week! Father Paul

Christmas Vocation Discernment Event We’ve all finally made it to the time of year where
things get busier than we could ever think possible!
Work parties, family gatherings, shopping events, and
so much more! Of course the most important thing is to
keep God right in the middle of all of our plans. In light
of this important task, I’m pleased to announce that
over Christmas Break, the Vocation Office is going to be
offering a retreat for young men in high school and col-
lege who are open to discerning a call to the Priesthood.
This is going to be a more focused event that the
summer camps, with more opportunity to allow the Lord
to speak through prayer. If you fit the description of a
high school of college guy who is open to a call to the
priesthood, then you have nothing to lose. And if you
don’t fit this description, but know someone who does,
maybe you could give them a great Christmas gift com-
prising of an invitation to attend the retreat! The event is
going to be held at Bishop Lane Retreat center (Main
Building), it will run from Sunday, Dec. 27 at 7 PM to
Monday, Dec. 28 at 3 PM, and costs $50 to cover a
portion of the expenses of lodging and breakfast and
lunch on Monday.
I’m looking forward to seeing what the Lord has in
store for this weekend, and I hope that many young men
from our Diocese will experience what god has been
planning for them, so please help me to get the word
out and if you are interested e-mail me at
[email protected] for more information!

Celebrate “Las Posadas” This Advent Las Posadas (Spanish for “the Inns”) is a nine-day
celebration with origins in Mexico that begins on
December 16 and ends December 24. It is a tradition
for many Catholic Mexicans
and other Hispanics that
symbolizes the trials that Mary
and Joseph endured before
finding a place to stay and
where Jesus would be born.
Everyone is invited to take
part in this tradition, which will
be held from 6 to 9 PM on
Sunday, December 20, Tuesday, December 22, and
Wednesday, December 23, from 6 to 9 PM. The even-
ing includes praying of the Rosary, reading Scriptures,
re-enactment of Joseph’s search for room at the inn
and singing of Christmas carols called villancicos. The
evening ends with a celebration of festive foods and
playing the piñata game for children. Make it an Advent
tradition for your family!
We Welcome the Newly Baptized Mason Michael Geske, child of
Glenn and Amy Geske

of Joseph and Patricia Schatz
Week 3: Celebrate Together The Third Sunday of Advent is Gaudete Sunday. Gaudete
is the first Latin word in the Entrance Antiphon for this
Sunday and it means “rejoice!” In this second half of
Advent there is a change in
tone from the grim warnings
of what might happen if we
do not heed the voice of
God, to ever more eager
rejoicing and anticipation of
His coming and His salva-
tion. Advent and Christmas
is a time of joy in the Church,
and often in our families,
too. It is a time for com-
ing together. Yet we also remember those who grieve
loved ones at this time of the year, or those who spend
it alone, and we pray that our loving church community
may hold all of us in its embrace as we celebrate to-
gether and build the Kingdom of God.
Official Prayer for the Extraordinary
Jubilee of Mercy Lord Jesus Christ, you have taught us to be merciful
like the heavenly Father, and have told us that whoev-
er sees you sees Him. Show us your face and we will
be saved.
Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from
being enslaved by money; the adulteress and Magda-
lene from seeking happiness only in created things;
made Peter weep after his betrayal, and assured
Paradise to the repentant thief.
Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the
words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman: “If you
knew the gift of God!” You are the visible face of the
invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power
above all by forgiveness and mercy: let the Church be
your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and glorified.
You willed that your ministers would also be clothed
in weakness in order that they may feel compassion
for those in ignorance and error: let everyone who ap-
proaches them feel sought after, loved, and forgiven
by God.
Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with
its anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a
year of grace from the Lord, and your Church, with
renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the
poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed,
and restore sight to the blind.
We ask this through the intercession of Mary,
Mother of Mercy, you who live and reign with the
Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen.
Shown above is Tom Widhalm and his wife, Terri, at a
retirement lunch our staff held for him this past week.
Among his gifts was a St. Joseph the Carpenter stat-
ue which they are holding. Tom will retire at the end
of this month after 17 years of dedicated service. The
skills and innovation he brought to his projects will be
difficult to replace. We wish him a restful and well-
deserved retirement!
Thank You,
Tom, for your
17 years of
service as Holy
Apostles’
carpenter,
maintenance
person and all-
around man of
many skills!
You will be
greatly missed!

prayers of praise and intercession, and moments of
rich silence.

Unexpected Gaps Bridged by SVdPS Living paycheck to paycheck is challenging in the best
of times, but when an accident happens, that delicate
financial balance can be thrown off instantly. Such was
the case of a middle-aged woman who has been off
work for a month since breaking numerous bones in
her hand. Although her finances are stretched thin,
her wish was for help in receiving a Christmas food
basket so she and her elderly mother could have a
Christmas dinner; she also asked for a phone card, in
case of emergencies. Your donations to the Knights of
Columbus and to the St. Vincent de Paul Society
helped ensure that these women could celebrate their
Christmas with a warm meal. This is my command-
ment, that you love one another as I have loved you.

siderata Retreat House 3015 N. Bayview Ln. McHenry, IL

Monthly Mass for Deceased On the third Sunday of each month (December 20th this month), the 8 AM Mass will be celebrated for all the
deceased listed in our parish funeral records who died during that month. Last month, the December deceased were
mistakenly published. We apologize for this error. So here we offer the names of both the November and December
deceased of our parish. Please remember them all in your prayers. May they rest in peace.
