Welcome to the March April issue of the Chrysler Collector.

As I write, the Adelaide Chrysler Festival

2018, Back to Tonsley weekend, presented by The Chrysler Car Club Of South Australia will be commencing. A lot is happening, Chrysler orientated, over this weekend and am looking forward to seeing them back where they were assembled/built, with Sunday being the open Day at Tonsley Precinct. It will be all over by the time you get to read this and am hoping that we have some great Photos and Stories to come out of it to put to print in the up coming months.

We need to start thinking about up coming elections for positions to replace retiring/stepping down committee members, so please if you are interested or know of someone who is, let us know.

Our runs this year have been successful. January saw the President’s Breakfast run with about 30 people turning up on a very, very hot morning. We headed off to Carisbrooke Park with instructions to take the first

turn off to the park, but finding most had missed the first turn off and ended up at the 3rd turn off, we stayed as it meant a difficult turn around. My humblest apologies to those who took the right turn. Have next years in the planning now.

February’s run, again another breakfast run, was to the Semaphore Palais in much more pleasant weather, and saw around 50 people turn up. Being early some of us walked the Semaphore Jetty and worked up an appetite. Well done to the organizers, Sharon and Brenton Gibb and Ann and Greg Lind.

I have now been in this position for 6 months and am enjoying the challenges and learning curves. I do have a brilliant Committee behind me and I remember the words of wisdom that I received from them when I accepted this position, they are my go to frequently. So I thought that I would tell you a little about myself, for those who I have not met or know me.

I joined the CRCCSA along with my partner Bruce Bragg in August 2011. We have 2 1964 Chrysler Dodges. A Phoenix and a Polara, also a 1964 Roadmaster Caravan. Bruce has an

assortment of other cars and those who know him, know about them. That is his story to tell. 2 will be on show at the Adelaide 500.

I still work as a Nurse/Midwife working with Premature Babies, 30 hours a week and enjoy it immensely. My saying is, they pay me to cuddle tiny babies. My family were not heavily into cars.

My parents had a 1955/56 Minx which stood us in good stead for years. I do remember admiring our local council members Chrysler Royal. As a grader driver, my Dad drove an assortment of 1940s Ford and Chev Utes which he taught us to drive in, so we could all double clutch from a young age.

Again, I wish to commend you all on being part of a very sociable and friendly club, and am proud to do my best to represent you all.

21 January 2018 The club’s first run for the year was as usual the Ray Miels President’s Break-fast run. Due to our President being involved in another event it was ar-ranged to have an alternative start for the day. Instead of the CCC car park our meeting place was at North Park Shopping Centre car park as our select-ed venue was going to be somewhere in the northern area. The arranged meeting time of 7.45am saw members arrive in time for a New Year greeting and chat. Dick and Judy Hart bought out their 1935 De Soto Airstream, a car we haven’t seen for a while, and Richard Tapp showed up in

his newly acquired 1956 Hillman Minx and Helena in her 1969 Hillman Hunter Safari. President Carolyn apologised for not being able to supply a run sheet and advised the chosen venue was Car-isbrook Park. At one stage we had members gathered at two separate parks, but Carisbrook won on the day. We found a very suita-ble undercover area as the summer tem-perature soon took effect and we were glad of the shade. Members set up ta-bles, chairs and barbecues and break-fast was on its way. Traditional bacon and eggs seemed to be the selected breakfast menu with cereals also a pop-ular choice. The opening run for the

year is always well attended, a chance for a chat and get the cars out on the road again after the Christmas break. Two members arrived in cars Carolyn thanked everyone for their attendance considering the warm morn-ing, and Brenton made members aware that the new magazine was available to collect. It wasn’t long before members began to depart and head for home to avoid the warm day. Thanks Carolyn for your selection of venue and for making the trip down from Tanunda to join us for breakfast.

18 February 2018 More than 50 members and guests attended this event, which was organised by Sharon and Brenton Gibb and Ann and Greg Lind.

This was a breakfast run, but we didn’t get there as early (or late) as suggested by the photo below, which is from their web site www.palais.com.au.

The Palais (to me) is a building that would be “at home” on one of the English holiday beaches - Brighton etc but is quite unique in the Adelaide context.

The proprietor had some concerns about dealing

with a large group for breakfast, because they prepare everything to order. But everything was good. The food was good. The wait times were reasonable. Other car clubs should put this on their future events list.

Helena and I intended to take the Royal to this event, but the battery died, despite being on a maintenance charging regime. That is the downside of maintenance chargers - there is often no warning of impending failure. So the Hillman Minx made an unplanned appearance.

Once again the Adelaide Chrysler Festival is done and dusted and what a weekend it turned out to be with a record crowd number attending all three days.

Many of our members attended events over the three days. By all accounts the Friday run to the National Motor Museum proved to be a big hit with the many interstate patrons who made the long journey to attend.

Friday night was the meet and greet at The Tonsley Hotel with guest speakers Gavin Farmer, ex Chrysler employee and author of many motoring books, former CAL Hemi Engineer Roger Carrol and Jeff Hughes from Shannon’s Insurance.

The Saturday Chrysler Mega Cruise attracted a huge crowd with a relatively short cruise around the inner suburbs finishing at Welland Plaza shopping precinct which concluded around sunset allowing time to travel home and prepare for the display day.

We had twenty three cars from our club plus another ten from the R & S club meet at The Marion Hotel and travelled in early as a group to a designated display area which was made so much easier by being undercover. The Main Assembly Plant made for a great display area with three hundred and fifty plus cars on display.

Visitors came from Queensland, Western Australia, NSW, Victoria and many of our country members also made the effort to attend, and all

agreed what a great time they had.

So if for some reason you could not attend this time, and this venue is made available again next year do yourselves a favour and attend, comments from those that travel the

car show circuit all stated that this was the best show in Australia. Well done to those members from the Chrysler Car Club SA and also Coast FM for a job well done.

All inanimate objects around here have names, and Wyatt is our 1969 VF Valiant Wayfarer ute. The name Wyatt means “guide” in both French and English. Our Wyatt was a ‘‘barn find’’ at, you guessed it, Walgett. He has all the patina of a car that that sat in a lean-to alongside a shed for twenty two years, after his headmaster owner retired from Walgett High School. Some club members have suggested that the patina tells a better story than a pristine new paint job, I am taking that under advice.

So, if you have a ute the first thing you need is a ute dog, check/tick.

The second thing you need is a waterbag, check/tick.

The third thing you need is a willing grandson, check/tick.

The plan according to my wonderful woman Gina is that the ute should be ready to go around Australia, the long way, the year after the National Tour, so in 2020.

Ok, well a couple of issues exist from the start. It’s very tight in that cab. Either the steering wheel is too far back or I’m too fat! I don’t remember this being a problem when I was a young fella and these cars were new? Some radical customisation is going to be required on at least one of us lest I find myself riding in the back whilst Gina and the dog enjoy the cab! As Wyatt is not a matching numbers car and his lineage is uncertain from the body numbers I am unconcerned about a few necessary alterations and additions (sound like a builder) if it means safety and comfort for the long trip.

Wyatt is currently up on four (4) axle stands with all wheels and the leaky fuel tank removed. The PBR disc brake (genuine factory) front end is about to undergo a complete restoration whilst the rear drums and linings will be treated likewise. Master cylinder and brake power booster are both in line for a complete resto also whilst the underbody will be treated to a complete underseal and paint where appropriate.

Ran the engine up recently using an alternate five (5) litre plastic fuel tank, did the tappets hot and then became disappointed at the compression test completed. I must have been used to high compression engines because after a chat with Chris Howes I am somewhat more confident that the engine in the vehicle might travel the distance. Numbers three (3) and six (6) are down about 14% from the even 130 on the other four (4).

Some other advice is that these may improve with a bit of running but I’m thinking a borescope look-see in those two might be useful. It’s supposed to be a GEM reconditioned engine that only did about eighteen months work before “retirement” so we shall see and make a decision. Any good ideas gratefully accepted. You know the sort of thing, black pepper mixed with scotch poured down the plug-hole under a

The carbie needs a kit and common sense dictates that the radiator gets an overhaul. The poverty-pack heater is a thing to behold. No dash controls whatever just a lever under the dash on the body of the unit. It would be a very brave driver who whilst in motion leaned over and down to operate the heater! There is a good sized ‘’pipe’’ coming from the heater unit into the left side fresh air vent right behind the vent door. So door closed directs airflow to the heater radiator and from there across the radiator to the right and upward to the windscreen via two tubes to the demister vents. Other than the hot water tap there is no adjustment here whatever so at 100mph my guess is it gets pretty hot and windy in there! Who knew? Let me say that stationary it certainly heats, limited demist you understand but heat it does!

The extraordinary thing is that there is virtually no rust in the car. Less than the size of a five (5) cent piece in the underside of the left rocker panel and a bit behind the Regal chrome sill trim on the left. The prestige Crystal Turquoise paint has suffered on all horizontal surfaces and on the tailgate but our man Bruce Bragg has some ideas about that. Certainly no point in a complete respray before the big circle so we will almost certainly follow his lead there.

The “official” numbers for the car make for interesting if not odd reading. Punched into the right-

hand inner guard are the numbers VF 7 L 20 136 B41. VF is simple, 7 means high performance 160HP engine, L20 (and that’s the interesting part) signifies low price bracket utility and B41 is the disc brake front end. 136 is simply its number in ute production schedule. It shouldn’t be a Wayfarer with the L before the 20. Wayfarers were M and yet it carries all Wayfarer badging and most of the Wayfarer chrome. I say most because it also carries some Regal chrome and Regal hubcaps and wheel dress rings along with Pacer side stripes. The odd thing is that this is how the car was sold new in February 1970. I have the photo to prove complete with proud male in flared pants standing alongside!

Given its build date of August 28th 1969 and its eventual sale in February 1970 did it leave the factory as we find it now or did the dealer keep adding shiny bits and stripes from the genuine spares bin until a wood-duck arrived at the showroom and laid good money down? Chrysler’s record keeping was still in the ledger and ink era even then so no help to be found there! We will probably never know but in the meanwhile work has started and I’ll keep you posted as to progress and archaeological finds.

This is my summary of a seven page document.

The Bay to Birdwood event started in 1980 as a not for profit “joint venture” between the Federation of Historic Motoring Clubs SA, National Motor Museum (using their current names) and an Adelaide TV station.

An incorporated Association was used for liability management.

The TV station withdrew in the late 1980s / early 1990s and the event continued with two “owners” instead of three.

The National Motor Museum is administered by the History Trust of South Australia, a government body.

A risk analysis carried out last year concluded that in today’s environment, an event as large of Bay to Birdwood should not be

organised using mostly volunteer management.

The Bay to Birdwood Committee agreed that the best way forward was for the History Trust (through the National Motor Museum) to manage the conduct of future events, using the event management staff from within those organisations.

Where available, they would continue to use volunteers under the control of staff, which the National Motor Museum already does with its day to day operations.

As a former Treasurer of the Bay to Birdwood Committee, this was a concept that I raised from time to time. At that time it was thought that the Federation would never be able to “sell” this to its members.

Time has passed and that

perception has obviously changed.

The proposal provides for an Advisory Committee to maintain a connection with the community of historic motoring enthusiasts.

A proposal was prepared for circulation to clubs to solicit feedback, but as seems to happen from time to time, it was distributed at a time when clubs had little opportunity to circulate to their members and discuss the matter. In this case that was over Christmas.

The Federation agreed to this change at its February meeting.

The late Arthur Clisby was a founder of the event, but one of things I recall about Arthur was his observation that “Today’s tradition was once a new idea”.
