President’s Report 28-06-2016 On Tuesday Mark and Sharon Sidandi gave us an update on the AKCO (Australian Kenya Community Organisation) school. This has been a very worthwhile project and is getting close to completion. These are Mark’s comments on Facebook.

“A big thank you to the Rotary Club of Croydon for inviting AKCO to speak about AKCO projects in Kenya and to give an update. Many thanks for the appreciation and recognition of the work AKCO is doing in Kenya especially the building of the Captain's Choice School, Kenya. A lot of appreciation for the encouragement expressed to AKCO and a renewed commitment by The Rotary Club of Croydon to complete the school building project in due course. Special thanks to AKCO project manager Brian McDaid, President Richard Gilham, John Gander, David Ferres and Beverley Stehn among others whose warm hospitality at the Dorset Gardens Hotel in Croydon was most sensational. We are so blessed to be associated with, and to work together with such an amazing and brilliant bunch of people”.

The 28th of June is our Annual Changeover Dinner at Bram Leigh Reception Centre. If you have not confirmed your attendance yet with John Hexter on: [email protected] can you do so as soon as possible and book your seat or even a table. We have just over 100 attendees. It is going to be a great night.

This is my final president’s report and there is sadness and a lot of happiness boiling up inside me. It has been a great year with many accomplishments achieved.

Last night Members of the Rotary Club of Croydon attended the Changeover Night for District 9810. Congratulations Carol Lawton on your new role as District Governor.

Our President Richard Gilham accepted on behalf of the Club, 2015-2016 Presidential Citation Gold.

The Club also received District Recognitions for Club Building, Club Projects, Club PR and Communications and Outstanding Rotary Club.

I would like to thank the members for their efforts over the past year.

Another year has passed and coming to a close in my journey with Rotary. I hope what I have learnt as the President of the Rotary Club of Croydon will be an asset in my future path through life. It has been an amazing ride and the support by the members has been unbelievable. Until you have been there you will just not understand.

We started the year with the launch of the Big Red Kidney Bus Project. The objective of the BRKB project was the renovation and modification of a standard bus into a stand-alone mobile renal dialysis unit able to dialyse up to 3 people at any one time. The modifications required were needed to best utilise the limited space available within the bus to house all equipment and necessities in a safe and secure manner.

Trying to raise the target of $150,000 for the refurbishment of the Bus seemed so distant. However with the skills of the Rotary Team in fundraising our objective was achieved. The Coach which was donated by the Bus Industry is on its way for refurbishment.

The Big Red Kidney Bus was just one of the projects that were completed or are still under way.

The Rotary Club of Croydon has supported numerous projects for the year in all avenues of service.

Some examples are:

Chairman’s Report Our guest speaker last week was Mark Sidandi of AKCO who gave us a progress report on the construction of the school that we have been fortunate enough to fund through the generosity of a local philanthropic group.

This project is the latest in a number of projects that our club has assisted AKCO with, over the past three or four years.

AKCO - Australia Kenya Community Organisation was formed by Mark and his wife Sharone to provide assistance to Mark’s birth country. He is now an ethnic Australian citizen.

In particular they run a school in his home village offering tuition to the children of the poorest families in the area and in addition providing a meal of porridge each day for the students.

The Kenyan government provide schooling but the parents have to pay for their kids to attend, leaving a large proportion of the population unable to gain an education. This gap is being partially filled by organisations such as the AKCO School.

The school, a six classroom double storey building is the largest building in the village, set in approximately four acres of land. Although still not completed it is with great pride that the locals have put many hours of voluntary labour into ancillary works including access pathways and major drains. Eastern Kenya is very wet with months of tropical rain resulting in very wet soil and resultant local flooding.

Mark’s talk was illustrated by numerous photos of the school children and the existing facilities; an area under a banyan tree for a school room! And a wood fire under another tree used to cook the daily porridge ration.

It was very moving to see the regard with which Mark and Sharone are regarded by the villagers and children and to realise that in some small way our efforts are helping them to provide a basic, to us, essential service.

If you unfortunately were unable to attend the meeting you missed a great club evening where we were treated to a host of reasons for being members of a service club.

STOP PRESS

Ivinhema: Tonhão assumes presidency of Rotary and delivery portable ultrasound device From Ivinoticias news website Brazil translated into English

Municipality received the donation of portable ultrasound device (Photo: Ivinoticias)

On the evening of Thursday (23), the Ivinhema Rotarians received friends and authorities for inauguration of the new president of Rotary in the municipality as well as the delivery of a portable ultrasound device (Portable Scanner Ultrassound).

As found the website Ivinoticias, this device portable ultrasound began to be idealized for several years and at the request of Councilman Admilson Photographer who sought Rotary to see what he could do for the municipality and they started doing various projects, several requests and partnership with Rotary Australia, managed the donation of this equipment is a portable ultrasound in the amount of R $ 20 thousand.

The mayor Tuta (PSDB) and Councillor Adimilson Fotografo were participating in the event, the opportunity the mayor stressed that Rotarians have done fundamental work is a government arm mainly in social work they develop with wheelchairs, crutches is always with Rotary.

"I am very happy to be in Rotary where the municipality of Ivinhema received from the hands of Rotarians one ultrasound machine that cost R $ 20 thousand reals, this will modernize and improve more and more care in the local hospital that is already in full operation, making elective surgery, undergoing tests that were not done, "said the mayor.

Update on the Family Violence Program

Last Tuesday, Stephen Bode and John van Holsteyn attended a breakfast meeting at the RACV club to mark the completion of the Police Mentoring Program that our District Governor, David Tolstrup, had suggested as a great project for our club. Our ‘tag’ team was made up of Stephen, John, and Ross Taylor with Graham Guy as mentee. Graham, who had just this month passed his Police Inspectors exam, brought us up-to-date on the progress of the local program he instigated together with Eastern Access Community Health (EACH). As you may remember from their presentation at our club meeting on 17 May, this program seeks to foster coping skills in young adolescents who have been marked by family violence. As the immediate family will be involved, it is hoped to prevent further violence in these families. EACH is currently recruiting the first group of participants and counsellors for the program starting in September. We have approached Rotary Health for their view on possibly assisting with the evaluation of the program. Our club may wish to remain involved in this community project, for example by mentoring program participants.

Overall, the mentoring program has been a success, as we reached further out into the community, as we extended our network, and as we assisted in working towards a solution to the problem of family violence.

John van Holsteyn

News from Naomi Mentiplay. Hello Jill

Sorry that I haven't emailed sooner it just feels like so much is happening. I've been on the euro tour which was amazing and I've also gone to London which was just incredible. Although there were more French in London than English! Or so it seemed. I've been to Disneyland in Paris and childhood dreams I didn't realise I had were fulfilled. It was also the last weekend put on by rotary with my oldies there (exchange students that arrived in September) so although it was amazing it was also a little sad. I'm now on school holidays and have about 2 and a half months off. I'm very pleased with that I can't lie. As for what I'm doing in the holidays I hope to go to Paris even though I just recently went and waited 3 and a half hours in line to visit the catacombs of Paris, luckily it was free for me because I am under 18 but it was definitely worth the wait. I also think I might go the alps for a few weeks which I am looking forward to.
