Bar Mock Trial

T WENTY six Year 9 students were chosen to be part of this year’s

Bar Mock Trial competition. Farlingaye

had two teams, and roles included lawyers for both defence and prosecution, magistrates and ushers. I was lucky enough to be a defence lawyer defending Olivia Campbell-Barr, who was charged with theft. We were well prepared and our confidence improved during group and individual sessions with Ms Hargadon and a dry run performed a couple of days before the competition.

The trials took place in Ipswich Magistrates Court and six schools including ours were involved. Each version of the trial had a Lead Magistrate and a Court Steward to guide the proceedings, as well as the competition judges.

The day itself was nerve-wracking and exciting at the same time. Questioning the defendant was fine

because we had rehearsed it so many times we were word perfect, whereas cross-examining the other school’s witness was harder as I had to be able to improvise if I got an answer I wasn’t

expecting. Despite being very nervous before we went in, when I came out, I wanted to do it all again!

Knowing this court is used for actual trials made the whole experience seem more important. I was now sitting in exactly the same place as the defence lawyers I had seen on our earlier visit. Being locked in the dock must have been even more daunting for my witness, Olivia, who, the Lead Magistrate pointed out, was facing a possible custodial sentence if I didn’t get her off!

Prizes were awarded by Simon Spence QC with Farlingaye coming 1st and 2nd. We’d like to thank all the court staff who volunteered to help as

well as Ms Hargadon, Mr Tunaley and Mr Picton, who were there on the day supporting us.

It was a great experience and I had never done anything like it before. It

Gardeners plus one J UST before we broke up for the

Easter holidays, I was invited to appear on stage at the Edible Garden Show at Alexandra Palace in London.

I was extremely excited to meet and perform with the Skinny Jean Gardeners. If you don't know who these guys are, they are brothers based in Essex and often appear on Blue Peter.

They've also spent time with Jamie Oliver and Jimmy Doherty at Jimmy's Farm.

I spent two days with them on stage. There were two staged areas at the show. One was called the Potting Shed, where there were practical demonstrations throughout the day,

and the other one was called the Expert Theatre, where we gave advice and answered detailed questions.

There were approximately 200 people watching and even more on the Saturday which was a little daunting but I thoroughly enjoyed it. I was lucky enough to meet James Wong - a well

known botanist. He was on before me so I think he must have been our warm up act! I also met this year’s Big Allotment Challenge contestants. It was interesting to meet them after watching this year’s series on TV.

It was a brilliant day - one I will remember! I have also been invited to the BBC Gardeners World Live at the NEC in June, to perform with the Skinny Jean Gardeners again! It should be fun! Lucas Hatch 9F

Intermediate Maths

Challenge 2015

I N the recent Intermediate Maths Challenge, open to students in Years

9, 10 and 11, over 70 students accepted the challenge and produced a

fantastic set of results with many notable performances. In total, 56% of the students received a certificate, a good haul considering the difficulty of the paper. Gold certificates were awarded to Lotte Tyndale-Hardy and Samuel Hopgood of Year 11, Alex Cooke, Peter Strulo, Sam Cottee, Anna Vincent and James Liddell of Year 10 and Josiah Brown of Year 9.

Additionally, the award of 9 Silver and 22 Bronze cer t i f ica tes rea l ly emphasises the Maths talent across the Key Stage 4 groups.

freelance journal ist v is ited Farlingaye library to talk to Year 9

and 12 students about his childhood in Suffolk and what inspired him to become a writer.

Joshua spoke about his writing and his first book “Sentinel”. He read a short passage from “Sentinel” and spoke about his career as an author and journalist. Away from book writing, Joshua is Contributing Editor at Total Film magazine and also does freelance writing for MovieScope, Grolsch Film Works and Spirit & Destiny. Mrs Mason

Finals

O N Friday March 20th, Alexander

Richards, 9I, took part in the Book Mastermind Area Final at Copleston High School.

Alexander competed against several schools from the county such as, Copleston High School, Ipswich High School, St Albans and Suffolk New Academy.

Alexander was challenged with two rounds; during the first round he was asked twenty questions on his chosen book “The Fault in Our Stars“ by John Green. The second round consisted of twenty general knowledge questions.

I am pleased to announce that Alexander won the Area Final and has gone through to the County Final, Friday 8th May at Riverside Centre, Stratford St Andrew.

Battle of the Books

N ORTHGATE High School hosted the event, with four other

schools attending. Each school had

previously voted for their favourite book and these chosen books had been sent to the other schools, to be read and discussed. This year, the four books all had the same themes: war, loss and the reflection of society now as a whole.

The book choses were: “Sister Assassin” - Farlingaye’s choice; “Between Shades of Grey” - St Alban’s choice; “Split Second” - Copleston’s choice; “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children” - Northgate’s choice.

“Sister Assassin”, our choice, is about two sisters whose world is turned upside down when Annie (who’s blind) has a vision of their parent’s death. A mysterious man turns up offering them a place to a

prestigious private school but Fia has a bad feeling. Over the next two years, Fia is dragged deeper into the Keane Foundations web of lies and discovers her own powers.

The thing that makes you think in this book is how far you would go to protect your own family. However, the downside of this book is that it jumps from Fia’s perspective to Annie’s, this point was very much picked up on by the other schools. After 45 minutes of intense

discussion, each table was asked to vote on their favourite books and soon it was clear that the battle was between “Split Second” (Copleston’s choice) and “Between Shades of Grey” (St Alban’s choice). We had a short break, where many cheese balls were consumed and cakes eaten! Finally it was time to vote, each person had to write the book of their choice on a slip of paper. Eventually after the votes were counted “Between Shades of Grey” won, with “Split Second” coming a c lose second. Music Round Up

I T has again been a sensational and busy half term in the Music

Department. Following the success of

‘Little Shop of Horrors’ we moved onto the AS and A2 recitals at St Mary’s church. Year 12 and 13 musicians perform and record their exams during the day and there are two informal concerts where students perform part of their repertoire for parents and peers. Really wonderful evenings.

A round of ABRSM grade exams a few weeks ago had our musicians preparing for a range of grades, instruments, styles and voices. We look forward to great successes. We are also waiting for our Grade 5 Theory exam results. Trinity grade exams are underway, supporting the huge variety of musical interests and skills the students have.

Wednesday March 15 th saw Celebration of Schools Music at Snape. The programme featured

Sinfonia, conducted by Mr Phillips, playing Farandolle, Elgar’s ‘Enigma Variations’ and ‘Pirates of the Caribbean.

The students’ behaviour was exemplary and we received some

wonderful feedback from parents and audience members with children from other schools. Sinfonia did indeed sound amazing!

On Thursday March 19th Big Band

played in Woolverstone as part of the ‘Rotary Club Young Musicians Showcase’. ‘Absolutely awesome’, ‘Wow!’, and ‘A secondary school too, imagine!’ and ‘Premier League’ were

but a few of the comments received after the performance. Mr Phillips led the the programme with favourites such as ‘Get Happy’ featuring soloist Verity Poulston and ‘String of Pearls’.

Our Choral Concert with our feeder primaries was on Monday and Tuesday of the last week of term. This

is a massive undertaking for all in the Music Department, especially Mrs Phillips who co-ordinated and orchestrated the whole event. Students from Farlingaye’s six choirs joined forces with different primary schools over the two nights to perform a variety of songs and styles. Both concerts finished with the finale, all the students singing ‘Sit down, you’re rocking the boat’. Our soloist Fabian Marshall-Tierney performed brilliantly! This is a fantastic opportunity for children as young as 6 to perform alongside students as old as 19, they can see what can be achieved and the opportunities as they move up to Farlingaye.

A really busy term for all concerned but what an achievement! Without your support these events can’t happen so a huge thanks from us. Ms Martino

I T has become a tradition to have an

Osca r - s ty l e inv i ta t i on -on ly screening of the school musical and on Thursday March 26th the cast, musicians and crew arrived in black tie to watch the video of this year’s production of “Little Shop of Horrors” in the Sixth Form Common Room. As ever we had the red carpet out to add

a sense of occasion and the students enjoyed reliving the performance and being back together again. Being in a show always creates a real sense of team spirit and it was lovely to recapture this for one evening. DVDs of the show can still be ordered from Mr Picton. Ms Tyndale-Hardy

RoboCup CoSpace UK

Challenge

L AST month, four Year 8 and 9

students, Oscar Pycroft, James Frost, Will Mathew and George Field, went to BT at Adastral Park for the RoboCup CoSpace UK Finals.

On the day, the students worked in pairs and had to program a virtual buggy around a field to collect as many points as possible in 8 minutes.

To make it more difficult, the students on ly rece ived the cha l lenge information on the morning. They then had 2 hours to prepare for the knockout rounds. The event was very tense and exciting.

Although they did not win the overall competition, the team won the ‘Endeavour’ award for hard work and perseverance.

We are now looking forward to next year’s competition.

PE Round Up Suffolk Indoor Rowing

Championship

O N March 20th, over 50 students from across all year groups had

an early start in order to travel to north London for the National Junior Indoor Rowing Championships.

Students had been training very hard in the run up to the event and received s o m e e x p e r t c o a c h i n g a n d encouragement from Mr Hall and a local rowing coach, who kindly offered to help them prepare.

After last year’s competition some students joined the local club and it was fantastic to see how much progress they had made; acting as fantastic role models on the day to the less experienced rowers.

Students are divided into year groups for the competition and they have to row as far as they can in a given time, as they get older they have to row further. This truly is a National competition as schools and clubs from all over the country come together to try to gain national accolades; in many age categories there were well over 200 competitors. All the students did

fantastically well on the day and there was a lot of focus on beating personal best scores and most of them did this

Wheeling

L AST weekend, Ceri-Ann Proctor, 9L, represented Great Britain at

the World Qualifications for Rhoenrad (gymnastic wheeling) in Capelle a/d IJssel, Rotterdam. Unfortunately she was 1 point off qualifying to take part in the World Championships in June.

Everyone at the event gave her lots of encouragement and took the trouble to speak English to her. The Dutch are all surprised that she has been

wheeling for such a short time and that she is already competing at the highest possible level at such a young age. She is the first and youngest girl from outside of the Netherlands to compete there.

While at the competition, the Secretary of the Dutch Wheeling Federation expressed how pleased they were to have her at the competition and that they want to see more of her at

their competitions. She has progressed at such an incredible speed to have been competing at level 5 only a month earlier at Grou and now to be competing at a level 1. He felt her skill

needs to be encouraged. She stayed on in the Netherlands

after the competition as she had been invited by Anoushka, a Dutch coach she has with her in the competitions, to join their Elite Squad at training on the Tuesday. This was a very intense 2 1/2hr session for her, in which she was

shown and helped to do lots of new moves. What an honour to train with 4 such high standard wheelers! Mrs Proctor

O N Tuesday March 17th, Farlingaye U12s won the Suffolk Schools’

County Rugby Finals at Woodbridge Rugby Club. The victory meant that they progressed to represent Suffolk at the Eastern Region Finals at Thetford Rugby Club on Thursday March 19th. Farlingaye played five matches at the Finals. They won all five games and only conceded one try in the whole tournament, against a very able

one sided match. I would like to thank the boys for being dedicated to training throughout the year and always showing excellent sportsmanship in their matches. There is unfortunately no progression from the Eastern Region Finals so we look forward to another good season next year. Mr Steed

T HE Farlingaye Flyers competed in the Woodbridge School One Day

Event at Poplar Park, Hollesley on Sunday March 22nd 2015.

Annie Jaspal came 3rd in the 90 cm section, an amazing achievement.

Jasmine Slater was riding a new horse and just missed the placings to come 11th in her section. Lauren Hassan and Olivia Lewis did well to get around the challenging course. Both also did well in their Show Jumping and Dressage.

Hunter Trial but neither was placed on this occasion.

County Sports Hall Athletics

Finals

L AST term, our Year 7 and 8 Sports Hall Athletics teams competed in

the County Finals. Both the boys’ and

girls’ teams had previously won the Ipswich and South Suffolk competition and as a result represented the area at the County Finals. The students love the atmosphere of Sports Hall Athletics where they compete to gain points for

the team. Events include the standing triple jump standing long jump, shot put, speed bounce and various running events. Students love being involved in the various relay events on the day and

it is a great preparation for the outdoor athletics season. We encountered some strong opposition from the rest of the County, but both the boys and girls were delighted to find out they had won the event and both teams were declared County Champions. Well done to everyone involved! Miss Alexander

Year 7 and 8 Handball

T HE boys’ and girls’ teams both entered the South Suffolk

Handball tournaments for the first time. With it being a new sport at Farlingaye everyone was a little unsure about the standard of opposition and a few of the students were a bit apprehensive, but excited nonetheless.

Both teams had a thoroughly successful day. The girls beat Copleston, East Bergholt and Northgate to top their group, whilst the boys beat East Bergholt, Hadleigh, Felixstowe, Northgate and St Albans. As a result of both teams playing so well they topped

their respective groups and qualified for the Suffolk County Handball Finals.

On County Finals’ day the best 6 teams from Suffolk participated, with two teams from North Suffolk, two teams from West Suffolk and two teams from South Suffolk. The Farlingaye boys were then in a group of 3 against Pakefield and Horringer, whilst the girls were against East Point Academy and Hardwick.

Both the boys’ and girls’ teams won their first game, with the boys beating Pakefield 14-2 and the girls beating East Point 4-3. This meant it came down to the final game in the group to decide if the boys and girls teams

progressed to the County Final. Unfortunately the girls came up against some very strong opposition in the form of Hardwick and narrowly lost

5-3, despite some great play from Ellie Richards and Polly Haste, whilst the boys drew 7-7 with Horringer meaning they progressed to the final to play Thurston.

Having watched Thurston waltz through their group, playing some excellent handball the boys knew they were in for a difficult challenge.

However, Farlingaye started the game with a fantastic intensity; Tom Sidhu’s workrate, combined with the skill of Seb Mobee and the finishing prowess of Josh Smedley meant the boys raced into an early lead. This was a lead they never looked like relinquishing with Finn Jones and Isaac Feavearyear looking solid in defence, being ably backed up by Tom Shallish in goal and Jude Machan in midfield. As the game progressed the boys’ team played some excellent handball and created some great scoring opportunities, and it was Farlingaye who were victorious, winning 9-3.

U13 Girls Netball: League

and Tournament Success

T HE U13 team rema ined undefeated the whole season

leading them to win the U13B League and gain promotion next season. They played teams from Copleston, East Bergholt, Ipswich High School,

Northgate, Woodbridge and Ipswich School. The team was both strong in attack and defence, their greatest win saw them scoring an impressive 41 goals against Copleston, and the girls only conceded 20 goals throughout the season. Miss Govier

W ELL done to the U15 girls who competed in the U15A league

and finished 3rd in the league just behind Ipswich High School for Girls and Kesgrave High School. They played 8 games across the season which also included teams from Copleston, Ipswich High School (B team), Ipswich School (A and B team), St Albans, Woodbridge. The girls were strongly matched with Kesgrave who they played early in the season, the game was closely contended but they narrowly lost by just 4 goals, the final score being 15-19. The girls also gave the league winners Ipswich High

School for Girls a good game, the final

score was 15-28. The team showed their strength when playing against Ipswich School, a well fought game that finished with a close victory to Farlingaye (25-24), other victories included Ipswich High B, Copleston, Ipswich School B, and St Albans. Miss Govier

Dear Parent/Carer We have had a wonderful week of football! Three of our six teams reached the final of the Suffolk Cup. Year 7 played last week and narrowly lost – Year 8 and 10 both played on Wednesday. Year 8 were 1-0 down 10 minutes from the end and then Josh Smedley scored two goals to ensure the team won. The Year 10 team won 3-0 and included Ellis Murrell scoring “the best goal I have ever seen in school football” – quote from Mr Tunaley who re-enacted it in the staff briefing for us all! Well done to all the teams.

Our students have had some great opportunities with trips recently. The French and German exchanges have been very successful. My thanks go to Mrs Green, Mr Hall and Mr Craig for their work to coordinate them. The D of E groups were very active with silver and gold both on trips in April and 100 Bronze students practising last and this weekend. Huge thanks go to Mr Colin Shaw who coordinates this, as well as accompanying the trips alongside Mr Barrie, Mr Sperling, Mr Mackenzie, Ms Magnall, Mr Dadge, Mrs Laird, Mr Bradley, Mr Moore and Miss Thraves. We've also held all six study revision days for year 11 with 95% of them taking up this opportunity. They are incredibly beneficial with the students completing 10 hours of revision in one day. Miss Gilmour and I love leading them and it was once again a pleasure to see the students so motivated and keen to do well. The two year 9 Mock Trial teams were brilliant at the Suffolk heat on March 21st, coming first and second. Both teams had worked so hard and should be very proud of all they achieved. The green team now compete in the regional heat in Stratford, London on May 9

th.

The Choral Concerts before Easter were stunning. As always, it was great to see children from the age of six singing with those of 18! Hundreds of children were involved and I'd like to thank all our music staff and those of the primary schools who do so much work to make them so successful. I’d like to thank Mrs Phillips in particular who coordinates them so well. Our Young Enterprise group won an award for ‘Communications’ at the Suffolk finals last night – thoroughly deserved after their creative selling ideas this year. Many thanks to Mr Howlett for his work with them.

At the end of last term we sadly said goodbye to Mr Etchingham who was with us as Head of English for four years and has been promoted to Assistant Headteacher at Hadleigh High School; Mrs Cochrane, Maths one-to-one tutor left us after four years; Mr Figueire our ICT Technician left us after one year; and Mr van Keulen (who is a visiting teacher/LSA from New Zealand) left after two terms. Also, Mrs Miles who is currently on maternity leave will not be returning to school at the end of her maternity leave. All of them gave excellent service to the school; they will all be missed and we wish them luck for the future. Congratulations to Mrs Cornell who had a baby daughter, Edith, on 16th March, Mrs Broome who had a baby son, George, on 11th April and Mr and Mrs Smith who had a baby son, Teddy, last week.

On 9th May we have a great “Glitz and Groove” dance night. Tickets are just £10. You can book a table for between 6 and 12 people. Bring your own supper and then dance the night away to Mr Piddington’s band who are brilliant. We have a reasonably priced bar and it should make for a great fun night without all the expense of a ball!

Events/Activities To Look Out For

The Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Practice Expedition is taking place on 25th April and 26

thApril.

Interviews with current Year 6 students who will be joining Farlingaye in September will take place on 29th April, 14th May and 21st May. The Gym and Dance Show is on 30th April at 7.00 pm. Tickets cost £2.50 and are available from reception. The Year 10 Maximise Day is on 1st May. The Year 8 Parents Evening is on 6th May. The Year 9 Mock Trial Regional Final takes place in Stratford on 9th May. The FHSF ‘Glitz and Groove Night’ is on 9th May. Tickets are available from reception for £10 each. Tables for 6 to 12 people should be booked. The Year 7 Parents Evening is on 19th May.
