BUTTON COVERING INFORMATIONIn order to produce covered buttons, you will need a steel CUTTER to cut discs of the selected material, a set of DIES (shell and back) for each size button required and a machine to which the dies are attached. A Cutter is supplied with each set of Dies ordered.

The first illustration above 1 shows the material blank in position over the button shell in the bottom Shell Die with rocker arm engaged. By the downward movement of the plunger, the Top Die engages the sleeve of the lower Shell Die and inserts the shell and material into the sleeve of the Top Die 2 . The Top Die is then released and the Back Die, with the pre-selected Back in position, is moved under it automatically

disengaging the rocker arm 3 . The Top Die is then moved downward interlocking the covered Shell with the button Back 4 which produces a complete, secure covered button ready for attachment.

This “Die Action” is virtually the same whether manual or air-powered machines are used. DYNA-LINE offers a complete line of cutting, covering, attaching, and tufting machinery to suit your needs.

A complete button mold consists of a SHELL that gives shape to the button (flat slightly domed or half ball) and a BACK that provides the means for attachment. These include wire eyes; clinch prongs, nails, tacks and hooks used with various types of anchors.

SHELLSWe have the most complete range of shells for every application. The various shapes (wall and crown heights) have been developed over many years. These, coupled with our wide selection of backs can be made into top quality covered buttons regardless of material used. In addition, the shell temper (softness or hardness) is extremely important. Our unique annealing process permits us to consistently produce the full range of shell tempers, for every material requirement.

WIRE EYE BACKSUsed with tufting twine, our #D9WEBK conventional back performs superbly for most applications. Where an extra strong bond between Shell and Back is desirable it may be best to consider our #2700 Lip Lok Back. Both Use a #9 wire giving you a large opening for ease in threading. The #D7WEBK has a smaller eye opening (#7 = #44) and is intended for use with more delicate materials. For a wire eye with 1/2” opening used with tapes (straps) please see page 7.

HOOK BACKSThese backs are primarily used with Pre-tied twine Loops to assure a uniform tufting depth and to offer faster application. Both types (metal-wire and molded-nylon) have smooth edges that will not fray twine and both are strong and durable. The Nylon backs have a special locking feature designed into the hook.

PRONG (clinch) BACKSThis Back type can be used in the same die as many of the other Back types. Tufting with prongs is fast and easy requiring no special skills. Tufting with prongs is secured by simply bending them 90° after insertion.

Various washers can be used to secure them more firmly behind coarse burlap or loose filling material. In certain applications the Round Spring Washer can be used to both lock the prongs and then function as a washer. (Shown at the bottom of page 4)

NO-DENT BACK NAILSThe #DNDHBK and #2900HB are welded to heavy gauge slightly corrugated headboard nails for driving directly into wood. The #DNDTBK and #2900TH are welded to heavy gauge deeply threaded nails to be used with spring washers for a faster, easier alternative to prong tufting.

PIVOT BACKS (single)Perfect for attaching covered buttons to upholstered furniture skirts, draperies, bedspreads, slip-covers, etc. No tools are necessary. Just push tacks through the material into the covered Pivot Back and a special spring action locks them together. Tack lengths are determined by thickness of materials plus the button height.

TWIN PIVOT BACKSDesigned to be used on pillows, comforters or similar items where a covered button is required on both sides. Twin Pivot Backs consist of a pre-assembled Tack Back which is pushed through one side of the item and a Pivot Back that is pressed on by hand from the opposite side.

Sizes: 22 24 30 36 40 45 60 80 100Tack lengths: 3/16” to 1” in 1/16 increments.

UNASSEMBLED TACKTo be used with your own tack or nail. These sets consist of a collet (back) with a hole to fit your requirements, a paperboard wad to hold the nail securely in the button and a standard shell for the size ordered. Collet is placed in the bottom die, your nail is dropped into the hole, covered with the wad and the shell is then applied normally.

UPHOLSTERY NAIL BACKSThese Backs are used for attaching a covered button to a solid backing such as the wood frame or the arm of the upholstered piece. They are pre-assembled with a heavy gauge threaded nail inserted through the collet and covered with a paper wad or steel disc that is held secure by clinching the collet flange. A wide range of tacks and nails are available.

BUTTON DRIVING TOOL (Specify correct button size)

The special concave head of this tool conforms to curve of button shell to prevent damage when covered button is driven-in with hammer or similar tool.

WASHERSWashers are used to lock Prong (clinch) backs securely in place. In addition, the poly and paperboard types help to deaden the sound that results from contact between the prongs and spring construction. One of the styles shown here will surely meet your requirements.

SPRING WASHERSSpring washers, when used with threaded Nail Backs, produce a very strong anchor for covered buttons. Both of these washers are manufactured of high quality, tempered spring steel. The larger round one is usually preferred because of its smooth edge. The smaller rectangular washer is perfect in corners or where there are other space limitations.

NYLON pre-tied LOOPS and RAPITIE LOOPS (with anchors)RAPITI LOOPS Rapiti loops with our #7499 steel anchor attached are a complete tufting system. Fast and easy to use, you simply snap the loop onto the button hook, push the anchor through the cushion etc. and release. The spread of the released anchor will hold button firmly in place. BT LOOPSBT Loops are pre-measured and pre-tied with a special knot that will never come undone. They come in two strengths, #6 standard or #9 heavy duty. Both are available in lengths from 1 to 8 inches in increments of 1/4 inch.

TUFTING TWINEMade from first quality white nylon, these twines are exclusively developed for the maximum strength and abrasion resistance needed in the upholstery construction industry.

ATTACHING DIES AND MACHINES
