David Young

W elcome to the July/August edition of The

Chingford Directory, your local community magazine and business Directory. I was thinking, just the other day. (Luckily, this didn't last too long.) But I

thought that it's a strange thing about my gen-eration - we sit somehow on the cusp of in-vention. It's happening all around us, like snow, and occasionally a flake of the stuff sticks to us.

I sit surrounded by shiny new gadgets, and, as my mental powers grow dimmer, so the gadgets seem to get smarter and smarter each day, as though they drain me of my intellectual powers to feed their shiny chrome, a sort of Dorian Grey in reverse if you will.

My days of imparting nuggets of wisdom

through these letters seem - oh bother - what was I about to say...?

I've clean forgotten what I was on about. But, on the plus side, my new fridge has prom-ised to write the next column. Anyway, it's so much cooler than me.

The Chingford Directory

W hen I was younger, and my younger brother younger still, we made a startling observation. There was a

stream that we crossed on our way to school. And there was a very similar stream near where Dad worked. It didn’t take Sherlock Holmes to figure out that the two must be linked.

So, one summer holiday in 1964, we set out together with nothing to help us on our way but a tube of Opal Fruits.

Sure enough, the streams were one and the same. We traced it from the bridge near school to the factory where Dad worked.

That evening, we told him of our discovery and wondered whether he might see fit to tell the whole world.

“You have done well, my sons,” he said. “But the truth is that mankind has long known of this stretch of water insofar as there is a road beside it. However,” and he turned to my brother, “I have great hopes that you will someday be a great explorer, possibly in the field of mathematics. And as for you, David… well… if you get lucky, and if they drop their standards a lot, you may get a year or two in a post in a library.”

The long summer passed slowly by in games of cricket and paddling pools. My young brother, who was 6, was just mastering logarithms. I was

more concerned with building a castle of mud in our garden as a possible defence against invading Apaches.

Looking back now, the murky mists of memory may muddle the recollection. In fact, I believe that we took Fruittellas with us that day and not Opal Fruits at all. Nevertheless, I clearly see my brother coming to Dad and saying “Father, I think that the total length of the river divided by its distance as the crow flies is about 3.14.”

“Young younger,” he said, “It is an amazing fact that all rivers obey this rule. And the ratio to which you refer is known by the Greek letter pi. And by the way, David, you seem to have spat-tered mud over your baby sister again.”

I pretended to get on with the castle, but eavesdropped as Dad explained to my brother.

Defined as the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter, pi crops up in the strangest ways in the natural world. Rivers have a property called the ‘meandering ratio’ – that is, the ratio of its actual length to its distance as the crow flies. This amazed Einstein, who explained, by using fluid dynamics, that rivers have a tendency to bend. But then a curve causes the outside of the curve to run faster and cause erosion, thereby forming a sharper bend. This makes the river loop back in the opposite direction. Because the shapes of loops are defined by pi, the meandering ratio of all rivers averages out at pi.

Pi, or π, is an irrational number. That is to say, it is a seemingly random series of numbers going

on forever. It has been calculated to over a trillion decimal places. You can listen to it being read out, but I wouldn’t recommend it.

Humans have always been intrigued by the maths of circles. A tablet from Baby-lon in about 1800B.C. shows an early attempt at the calculation of pi. In 250B.C. the Greek mathe-matician Archimedes used hexagons inside circles in a more scientific approach. In 1424, the Persian astrono-mer Jamshid al-Kashi used a more complex shape and calculated pi to 16 places, a standard that was used for the next 2 centuries. The Greek letter π was first used in 1706. But the advent of the computer has lead to closer and closer calculations of its exact value. Why do we need to do this? Well, between you and me, and please don’t tell my brother this, we kinda don’t. But knowing the rough value of pi is

vital in all sorts of fields, from thermodynamics to aviation. But a trillion digits? Really?

Well, the factory has closed down and the river become quite dry, but pi hasn’t changed. And as to the rest of the story – my brother went on to fulfil his goal as a mathematician, but I never com-pleted that castle of mud.

South Chingford Community Library

THE LIBRARY NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT

I n order to sustain the library and its range of services offered beyond 2014, they need to seek a substantial increase in funding.

They have over 700 members and around 60 active volunteers who give their services for free. The expansion of opening hours, and in-crease in community activities demands new sources for support. They are therefore seeking local sponsors or businesses who can either assist them financially or help with advice on seeking funding. If you can assist, or have suggestions, then please leave your contact details at reception, or email: [email protected] Profile of an SCCL volunteer “a passion for knitting” I want to tell you about the knitting groups I have set up, and the money that we have raised.

When I walked into South Chingford Commu-nity Library that September day in 2012, to ask them if the were interested in hosting a knitting group, little did I know it would be so successful. Publicity and word of mouth brought 15 ladies to the group for our inaugural meeting. The group started in November with the name “Knit And Natter” (and we do!!).

As many as 100 knitters have passed through the group and we currently have a regular atten-dance of about 25. There is a wide age range with quite a few different nationalities and knit-ting abilities. Although it was never intended to be a teaching group, many have learnt to knit and crochet with us. We have sold items at one craft fair (making £95) and each Thursday and Saturday I put a table of hand-made items in the Library window, for sale. Since I started taking note of the money, we have raised over £1,000 towards Library funds (also buying two trolleys for storage), which is quite good since it is free to join and attend the group.

We have a good selection of patterns, needles and yarn, all donated. All members are eager to lend/copy patterns and help each other out with any problems (some not about knitting!).

As members left, due to getting work or look-ing after grandchildren, they said how much they missed the group- so we now have a spin-off group running on a Saturday afternoon called “Sit And Knit”.

REVIEW YOUR FAVOURITE BOOKS FOR SCCL The library will pro-duce a display of books reviewed by members of the li-brary, so that others may borrow them and share the enjoyment.

Here is how to begin Write a review of your book (maximum 2 sides of A4 – MS WORD or txt format) and email it to [email protected] (alternatively, submit your review on paper to reception). They will then gather the reviews together in a folder to accompany the display, and also post them on the website. Then, please donate a copy of the book to add to the display. They will insert an acknowledgment sticker in the front and place the book in a bookcase in a prominent position in the library.

HAVE FUN LEARNING TO PLAY BRIDGE Ray Green invites you to join the East London Bridge Club. I decided to join one of Ray’s bridge courses to try it for myself. I know a few people who play bridge and find it a stimulating and sociable game. I had also interviewed Ray for the articles in The Chingford Directory for 2011, 2012 and 2013. The article also appeared in The West Essex Directory in 2012 and 2013.

There were about 12 new players when I joined and Ray started us off with games of mini bridge progressing to bridge. I found the lessons were well planned and challenging and Ray gave us lots of mate-rial to follow up each lesson. It was fun learning with others and there was always plenty of support and encouragement from Ray and the other players. This is what Ray said,

“Bridge is a trick taking game of skill and chance played by four players who form two partnerships; the partners sit opposite each other at the table.

Bridge can be a lifelong pursuit and a learning process that never ends. It can be exciting, challeng-ing, frustrating but never boring.

It is a social card game that includes strategy, trust and teamwork. You can develop friendships with others who are learning and already playing bridge. It is also a great way to sharpen your memory and exercise the brain.

Once you have learnt the basics of bridge you are able to practice with friends. The only cost is a cou-ple of packs of cards and the tea and biscuits.

From Monday 20th October I shall be giving eve-ning lessons from 7.30 – 9.30 pm. These will be on every Monday except Christmas and bank holidays.

I am offering a 32-lesson course that will cover all aspects of this interesting game and help you to be ready to play in one of the many local bridge clubs.

Each 2-hour lesson including a tea/coffee and bis-cuit break is £10 per person. You only pay for the lessons you attend and will be given the opportunity to cover missed lessons on a later course. On these lessons you will be partnered with another member of the class. You are of course welcome to join with one or more friends and learn in a relaxing, comfort-able home environment.

Later in this course I also offer supervised bridge play. There is a 2 hour supervised play session on Thursday evenings 7.30-9.30pm for £5 per person.

For those who wish to improve their bridge play I organise intermediate evening lessons on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month from 7.30 – 9.30pm.”

If you are thinking of joining Ray’s course and would like to take advantage of the special beginner’s offer send your cheque for £50 with your name, address, home and mobile phone numbers to Ray at the address below. For more details contact Ray on 020 8281 8376 or go to www.eastlondonbridge.co.uk.

Profile: East London Bridge Club

SPECIAL BEGINNER’S OFFER If you wish to pay in advance for the first five lessons of the course, you will be given the course book (retail price £25) free of charge on the first lesson. Payment to arrive before 10th October. If you wish to take advantage of this offer, please send your cheque for £50 to RAY GREEN 22 Horsley Road Chingford London E4 7HX

Old Hall Tavern in Hall Lane, Chingford, had a reputation for anti-social behaviour

A once-failing pub has been praised by award scheme assessors for its high standards and responsible management. Shane Kilcrann

took over the Old Hall Tavern in Hall Lane Ching-ford nearly five years ago and immediately closed it down to carry out a deep clean and refurbishment.

He has invested almost £150,000 into the business to turn it into family friendly pub. Mr Kilcrann said: “When I took over, I immediately closed the pub as I felt it was not fit for public health. The public were at risk. It was filthy dirty and should not have been open. It has taken me five years to get to where I wanted. It was always a big risk taking over a pub with a lot of history attached to it. I was told numer-ous times it wasn’t a particularly nice place.”

The money has been spent on refurbishing the interior and exterior of the building. Serving up to four ales on tap at one time, the pub has been given a number of industry accreditations for its beers. Mr Kilcrann, his 10 staff and regular customers have taken part in dozens of fundraising events, collecting more than £20,000 for local charities including Woodford Green's Haven House Children's Hos-pice.

Assessors from the Home Office’s Best Bar None scheme visited the pub in December last year. Mr Kilcrann described it as a “gruelling” three-hour inspection, but the pub registered the highest score in Waltham Forest. He attended an awards cere-mony at Waltham Forest Town Hall where the Old Hall Tavern was named 'Pub of the Year', the first award of its kind in the borough.

Shocked by the announcement, Mr Kilcrann thanked his staff and customers. He said: "This is not an individual award, it is an award for my staff and loyal customers. I would not have received this if the staff did not put in the hard work and effort to make the pub what it is, and also the continued custom and support from my friends and customers over the past few years."

A total of nine pubs in the borough have gained the UK accreditation. Story courtesy of Chingford Guardian
