Endings are a necessary part of our lives. One of those endings came by way of a phone call after several serious conversations. Mason Parker called to share with me his desire to step down from his position as our Director of Youth Ministries. As stated in Mason’s Minutia article in this issue of The Chimes, he is sensing God’s call to ministry, which is something he and I have explored. Having been there, discerning what kind of ministry God’s call is leading to is not an easy thing to sort out. It takes time, holy conferencing (conversation), and a great deal of prayer. Mason has sought and continues to seek God’s guidance in this process. With his permission, I share that in one of our conversations Mason asked, “How do you know you’ve made the right decision?” It’s a question I’d say all of us have asked at some time in our lives. My counsel to him was, after great prayer, soul-searching, and seeking counsel from others, when the decision is made, does it bring to your soul a sense of peace in the place of chaos, anxiety, or confusion? If so, my experience that is a clear sign of having made the right decision. Mason has experienced such peace. Laying down his responsibilities at FUMC as youth director will allow him more time to focus on his education, explore other areas of ministry, and gain some clarity as to the next steps in his life. Mason will continue to “tend to” our youth and will go with them to the Jr./Sr. High Conference Retreat at Lakeshore. He will be in worship on the 10 th which will give us an opportunity to express our appreciation for him as a child of God, and for his ministry. I know you will want to be present to express your gratitude. This is, for Mason, a necessary ending that will provide him the opportunities to begin again. When you think about it, life is full of “endings” as well as “new beginnings”. Both are a necessary part of life. Without endings there would never be the opportunity to begin again. When I was in college, the school I attended (Martin Methodist in Pulaski, Tennessee) was noted for having a diverse international student body. One such student was a dear friend of mine. His name as Ngoi Kipanda. He was from Zaire, Africa. Finally, as graduation drew near, I remember an occasion when several of us were talking about our next steps. Many in the group were expressing with great sadness the “ending” of our time together. Ngoi sat quietly then interjected, “My friends, don’t be sad. Our goodbyes also bring the promise of an opportunity when we once again say, ‘hello’.” Ngoi got it. The words of a Natalie Sleeth hymn express well the truth of endings and beginnings leading to new endings and beginnings: In the bulb there is a flower; in the seed, an apple tree; in cocoons, a hidden promise; butterflies will soon be free! In the cold and now of winter, there’s a spring that waits to be, unrevealed until its season, something God alone can see. There’s a song in every silence, seeking word and melody; there’s a dawn in every darkness, bringing hope to you and me. From the past, will come the future, what it holds, a mystery, unrevealed until its season, something God alone can see. In our end is our beginning, in our time infinity; in our doubt is believing; in our life, eternity. In our death, a resurrection, at the last, a victory, unrevealed until its season, something God alone can see. Some folks live as if every ending and every beginning is final, and can’t lead to new endings and new beginnings. Yet, ours is a God who makes all things new! Without endings and beginnings, that simply wouldn’t be possible, and that’s worth thinkin’ about! Mercy, Doug Welcome To The FUMC Family Of Faith! MASON ’S MOMENTS Mason Parker, Director of Youth Ministry

Thank You for the Blessings I recently read a passage from a book called “The Eternal Current.” It goes like this: “There is a great and mighty River flowing throughout history toward the healing and restoration of all things. Jesus called this the kingdom of God, where what God wants to happen happens. But he didn’t say, “Believe

about this River.” He invited us to join him in it and to learn how to swim with the Current for the sake of the world.” It’s powerful to note that we are all a part of the river. We are all a part of the transformation both within ourselves and through ourselves. We are all a part of its movements, its bends and crashes and waves. We all embrace the twists and turns that the River gives us because we know that through every perilous rock or sudden crook that God is still working on us. Sometimes, we feel like we hit a bit of a waterfall. It’s a tall one, and we can’t totally see what is at the bottom, but we know we must move toward the edge of the waterfall. We need to continue to move in the way we are called to. As you may know, I am choosing to resign from my position as youth director, and the decision has been much like being pulled in the current toward the waterfall. I have struggled with what my call is for some time, and I have finally come to a place where I feel like I might understand it. I might just be going over the edge of the waterfall, and whatever is at the bottom is feeling a little clearer, a little less scary. I am stepping away into a more peaceful time for myself, and I wanted to take this opportunity to thank all of you for pouring into me. There are invaluable lessons that I will never be able to pay back, and I owe each of you debt of gratitude for believing in me during my time here. You have taught me the value of communication, being willing to teach, and most of all, the worth of giving everything that I have to something. Thank you all for sacrificing the time to help me when I had questions, and for caring to make this youth program what it is capable of being. Thank you all for the blessings.

SERVING TOGETHER

Once again we have the privilege of participating in the annual Memphis Conference Lenten Hunger Offering. Hunger Offering Calendars are available inside the sanctuary, at the ramp entrance and in the back of the sanctuary on the Ury Street side. One side of the calendar is intended for adults and older children. On the opposite side, for younger children, is a more child-friendly calendar, and comes with a cardboard bank the children will have already decorated at Wednesday Night Together. You are encouraged to use one or both of the calendars with your children during the Lenten season. Simply follow the directions on the calendar and make your offering count!

Bring your offering on Easter Sunday, April 21, and place it in the offering plate! This offering will serve to support feeding ministries throughout West Tennessee!

“Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.”

Luke 6:36

For 35 years faithful United Methodists across the

Memphis Conference have given sacrificially to the

Lenten Hunger Offering. It is phenomenal what we

can do together for the cause of Christ. This is one of the

hallmarks of our connection that together we are better and can

do more to address the needs of the world through our giving. It is

my prayer that every congregation in the Memphis Conference

make a gift to the Lenten Hunger Offering. Your gifts matter and

will make a difference! - Bishop William T. McAlilly

Cards of Thanks Dear Friends,

It is with grateful hearts full of appreciation for our

friends in this Church Family for you thoughtful

gestures in reaching out to us in the death of my Dad,

Miller Alvin Chapman.

The weight of mourning is lightened when shared.

Thank you for lightening our load with you love and

kindnesses.

Knit Wit Ladies,

Thank you so much for the sweet handmade

blanket! Our baby girl is going to love it!

It was so kind of you all to remember us during this

special time! We truly appreciate all of the prayers that

have been prayed over the blanket!

Jeremy, Susan, and Gracie Beth Burpo

Ladies,

I wanted to say THANK YOU for the banner you

made in memory of Paula Breeden. The banner came

at a time around the holidays when her husband, Bill,

our family, and I were missing Mom’s presence. The

banner lifted our spirits and warmed our hearts

because it let us know that others were thinking of her

and perhaps missing her like we do. We really

appreciated that the banner referenced the United

Methodist Women, the picture of so many of her

friends, her passion for gardening, playing bunko, the

jewelry she loved to wear, her work in banking, and

even her time in high school as a majorette. Bill, our

family, and I truly appreciate the kind and thoughtful

gesture in memory of Mom.

Thank you again for your kindness!

Also, thanks to those who sent cards.
