From Pastor Chuck ...

APRIL FOOLS By Chuck Boatman

This year, Easter is just the day before the proverbial “April Fools Day.” As

I was reflecting on the juxtaposition of the two days on this year’s calendar, I

remembered the old story of the atheist who sued to have Christian holidays

removed from the calendar. His argument was that Christians have holidays

such as Christmas and Easter, and atheists have none. The judge threw out his

suit, saying, “No, sir, you do have a holiday: it’s April Fools Day.”

The judge’s retort might be lacking in sensitivity toward people who ques-

tion God’s existence. For some, doubt reflects a conscientious attempt to wres-

tle with the question of life’s ultimate meaning. However, the judge also poked

a bit of fun at those who don’t take seriously the fact that at least one-third of

the world’s population identifies as “Christian.”

The world has long thought of Christians as gullible fools for believing in

the Bible’s “fairy tales” about miracles such as the Virgin Birth and the Resur-

rection. These two core doctrines stand as “bookends” to Jesus’ earthly life.

They speak directly to his identity as God’s son who came enfleshed

(incarnate) to live among us, teaching us both how to live, and how to love oth-

ers.

Psalm 14.1 says, “The fool says in his heart, ‘There is no God.’” The word

used in the Hebrew text [nabal] implies an impious person whose life shall

come to naught. The idea seems to be that denying the Creator is hardly a wise

attitude when the evidence is all about us in the testimony of his world and his

Word.

On the other hand, the Apostle Paul says, “Our dedication to Christ makes

us look like fools.” (1 Cor 4.10, New Living Translation) The Greek word Paul

uses is moron. Yes, moron-someone of limited intelligence [in the classic usage

of the word]! On the other hand, the demise

of religion (and especially Christianity) has

been predicted for a long, long time.

G.K.Chesterton once said, “Christianity has

died many times and risen again, for it has a

God who knows the way out of the grave.”

So, the lines are drawn, and we get to

choose which side we are on. As Joshua said

so long ago (Joshua 24.15), “. . . as for me

and my household, we will serve the Lord.

KAIROS TESTIMONIES

Reflecting on the recent Kairos Outreach in Chapel C, at Donovan State Prison is one thing, trying to express it in words is impossible. On March 14-17, 2013 we invited 36 inmates to a four day retreat where they joined 43 volunteers from the outside who gave sacrificially of their time. Our main objective was to love these men uncondition-ally and to listen as they shared their pain and fail-ures with us.

Some of the comments that I heard…,“Pastor...I have felt love for the first time in my life.” One brother admitted, “I came just to get out of my cell for four days, but I have been overwhelmed by God’s love.” One...confessed, “I really came for the cookies, but I’m leaving here with Christ in my heart.” A...leader of the Muslim community con-fessed, “You Christians show me more love than the brothers of my own faith. I believe that God is showing me something about where I really need to be.” Others shared how they finally were able to forgive and receive forgiveness. Some came back to a faith in God that they once had as a child. The entire four days were filled with powerful manifes-tations of God’s power, love and grace. Thank you so much for your faithful prayers and financial support. Eternity alone will reveal the full impact of your sacrificial gift.

The first Serving Seniors “e-letter” has been sent to those who have indicated their de-sire to receive it. The letters offer a regular, brief look at some of the fun and frustration that comes with getting older—or should that be phrased “more mature”? Regardless, if you wish to be placed on the mailing list, please email me at: [email protected]. Now that San Diego County’s “terrible winter weather” is behind us, we’re looking forward to some outdoor activities. If you have suggestions for field trips or other events, please let me know. –Chuck Boatman

Only One Plan!

Have you ever wondered why Jesus still has those

marks of His earthly journey with its cruel Cross? I

often wonder why He still has those scars even after He

was glorified.

I believe it is to remind us of His Father’s plan

to save us. I believe that same plan that was over 2,000

years ago hasn’t changed and we are privileged to be

one of His children who knows why Jesus died on that

cruel cross and for whom. Can you imagine how much

God truly loves us? His plan way back then is still the

same today. Jesus instructed his disciples and a few

more of their friends to tell others about Me. Those

who are told will tell others in turn, and My story will

be spread to the farthest reaches of the globe. Ulti-

mately, all of mankind will have heard about My life

and what I have done for them.

Some days I get frustrated with the little things

that deter me from sharing God’s Story with our

children like financial issues, busyness, life’s chal-

lenges. But after a good night of praying, the Holy

Spirit puts me right back on track and reminds me of

Jesus’ simple plan of telling others about His love. You

see Jesus only has one plan and He is counting on us to

follow through. Twenty centuries have passed and it’s

still the same. The gospel of Jesus Christ, which we

also call “Good News” is still dependent upon telling

others. Christ counted on them, and His disciples

delivered. Now, it’s our turn. Can we be counted on?

Pastor Jerome’s messages, Small groups,

Youth’s small group and even the Children’s Ministry

are all using the Gospel Project’s curriculum. This is

our way of doing what Jesus is asking all of us to do.

We are sharing God’s Story.

Children’s Ministries Happenings!

*VBS is on the church calendar for June 24th thru 28th. The theme is “A Polar Expedition!” It’s all about Jesus. Terri Marroquin, Betty Falls, Susan Holthaus, and even my sister, Susi Heath, have already committed to this fun-filled week. Please notify Beth Ann soon, so you too, can be part of this team. A second planning meeting will be set up soon. We want to get all volunteers in place before everyone’s summer plans are set. *Preschool- Our wonderful church family never ceases to amaze me. Bill and Vicki Porter, the owners of the Garden Center and El Jardin, are helping our preschool with their fund-raiser. Included in this month’s Chimes, is a cou-pon, that when presented at the “Garden Center”, fifteen percent (15%) of your tab will be donated to the preschool—they will also be included in your April bulletins. The Porter’s have graciously offered to participate in the same way for church patrons of their other restaurant “El Jardin”, as well for the month of May. Thank you, Porters and Church Family!

Please support the preschool and our wonderful friends, the Porters by eating out all April and May!

*Your Preschool is registering for the 2013-2014 school year. Tell all your friends about our wonderful school! *Awana is in full swing. The kids surpassed their goal in the second week during their Annual Food Drive for the Fallbrook Food Bank. *Our awesome Los Amigos Tutors work so hard each week with their students that their awesome leader, Charlene Mann, took them on a fun hike at Los Jilgueros in Fallbrook. The scavenger hunt was their favorite part of their day. *Our Sunday school teams are doing a fabulous job. The Gospel Project has been a wonderful tool to teach our kids about our Great Big God. Jesus is always the focus in every story and in every lesson. *If you have a 2nd grader or older and want them to learn about Communion, please see Beth Ann or call the church so we can set a class up with Pastor Jerome. The child must commit to 2 meetings. Loving your children through God’s ways,

Beth Ann

O Son of God, perform a miracle for me: Change my heart. You, whose crimson blood redeems mankind, whiten my heart. It is You Who makes the sun bright and ice sparkle. You Who make the rivers flow and the Salmon leap.

Your skilled hand makes the nut tree blossom and the corn turn golden; Your Spirit composes the songs of the birds and the buzz of the bees.

Your creation is a million wondrous miracles, beautiful to behold. I ask of You just one more miracle: Beautify my soul.

The Mayonnaise Jar

When things in your life seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours in a day is not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar and two cups of...coffee.

A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, wordlessly, he picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and fills it with gold balls. He then asked the students if the was full. They agree d that it was. The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured it into the jar. He shook the jar lightly so that the pebbles rolled in between the golf balls.

He then asked the students again if the jar was full, and they agreed it was. The professor then picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar, and of course, the sand, filled up everything else. He asked once more if the jar was full, to which the stu-dents responded with a unanimous “YES”!

The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar, effectively filling the empty space between the sand., causing the students to laugh.

“Now,” said the professor, “I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important things — God, family, children, health, friends...the things and people that keep your life full. The pebbles are the things like your job, house and car; While the sand is everything else — the small stuff.”

“If you put the sand into the jar first, there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life. If you spend all of your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that really matter...Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness—worship with your family, play with your children, take your partner to dinner, spend time with good friends. There will always be time for chores and other things. Take care of the golf balls first—the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.” One of the students asked what the coffee represented. Smiling, he said, “I’m glad you asked. It just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem, there’s always room for a couple of coffee with a friend.”

Ron & Erin Hesse, former members of our church, serve

with Wycliffe Bible Translators. They are currently back

in Indonesia, and sent us the following letter.

Serving with Wycliffe

in partnership with

YBI: Yayasan Betania Indonesia

Translation Problem When the Gospel was introduced to the Tehit people more than 70 years ago, the evangelist coined a new term for God: Nago, from na (person) ago (up there). The Tehit people as a group chose at that time to believe in Nago. Over the years, this name has been freely used for both ‘God’ and ‘Jesus,’ and everywhere that Scripture talks about ‘the Lord’ also. However, this creates a problem when translating. For example, in Acts chapter 8, Saul is a believer in Nago (God). Yet he is persecuting those who believe in Nago (Jesus). Later he preaches the gospel to Jews, believers in Nago (God), so that they will turn and believe in Nago (Jesus). This could be very confusing of course, so we are hoping that in these passages, by using Nago only for God the Father, and Nago Wfe Wet (The Son of the One Above) or Yesus for Jesus, we can get the concepts across. We’re hoping to check these verses and others when we are in Papua in the Spring. Please pray for this process. We are so thankful that the One Above came down as Jesus, to live a life and die a death for us. What wondrous love!

Sing a New Song For a long time, Erin has been wanting to bring her heritage of Scripture songs to the Tehit context. So in October, we held a small Scripture song workshop, using the book of Mark in Tehit. Nothing ever goes as planned, but the ten adults did enjoy thinking about creating Scripture songs, and came up with songs to five verses of Mark. As a final celebration, we all sang one of these in church: “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” (Mark 11:9-10) Please pray that God would cause his Word to bring himself glory and praise.

Prayer -- As we go to Indonesia March 10 to June 10: for health, wisdom, relationships, and eyes to see what God is doing. -- As Niki, Eileen and Roland come join us in May in Papua for almost a month (and Esther for a week); for health, wisdom, relationships, and eyes to see what God is doing. We hope and trust that this will be a time of refreshing memories and service to the people they grew up with. -- For wisdom in decisions about adding new Tehit people to our team. -- For guidance for the future for Eileen, Niki and Esther. -- For our visas which need renewing in May, for God to direct the process and the timing. -- For the new administrator for YBI teams, for wisdom and peace in various situations. -- For God’s Word in audio, song and writing to reach and touch many lives.

Thanking God for you,

Erin and Ron
